‘Diana’ Trailer: Naomi Watts is the People’s Princess by Kofi Outlaw (SCREEN RANT)

Watts already has been nominated for two Oscars, but is definitely angling for a third with her new film Diana, a biopic memoir about the last two years of Princess Diana’s life, following her divorce from Prince Charles.  Watch the teaser trailer for the film above; the movie comes by way of German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (The Experiment) and acclaimed UK playwright-turned-screenwriter, Stephen Jeffreys.

Much like The Iron Lady Teaser Trailer, this teaser for Diana is meant to succinctly introduce Watts in the role of an icon – and it’s a strong match, if this footage is anything to judge by. Of course, unlike that initial Iron Lady trailer, this teaser does not go so far as to show any scenes of Watts actually speaking, which is sure to be a rather large hinging point for the millions of Diana fans out there, who will be scrutinizing every frame of this film.

Dench and Streep in battle for gong (INDEPENDENT IE)

Dame Judi Dench and Meryl Streep are to do battle to be named best actress at the Moet British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs).

James Bond star Judi is nominated for her role in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, while Meryl is up for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Ensemble comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, about a group of British pensioners moving to a retirement hotel in India, is nominated for five awards, including best film, John Madden for best director, Tom Wilkinson for best supporting actor, and Dame Maggie Smith for best supporting actress.

Rapper Plan B's acclaimed directorial debut Ill Manors has three nominations, including the Douglas Hickox award for best debut director.

Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave are both nominated for their performance in moving drama Song For Marion, about a man who finds comfort in his local choir after losing his wife to cancer.

Hollywood Costume will gather together more than 100 of the most iconic costumes designed for unforgettable cinema characters over a century of film-making.

Among the costumes on show will be Dorothy’s blue and white gingham pinafore dress designed by Adrian from The Wizard of Oz from 1939, Scarlett O’Hara’s green ‘curtain’ dress designed by Walter Plunkett for Gone with the Wind from 1939, and the ‘little black dress’ designed by Hubert De Givenchy for Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s from 1961.

Costumes from more recent Hollywood releases, including Consolata Boyle’s clothing for Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and Keira Knightley’s costumes from Anna Karenina, will also be on display.

How to hold fans until “Downton Abbey” returns in January?

“Masterpiece” is working furiously on that challenge. The PBS series has a strong candidate in ”Birdsong,” a lavish, two-part romance that airs at 9 p.m. this Sunday and April 29. Like the second season of “Downton,” “Birdsong” unfolds during World War I. Based on Sebastian Faulks’ novel, “Birdsong” follows British Lt. Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne).

As he struggles to survive harrowing battles in 1916, he thinks back to his love for a married woman, Isabelle Azaire (Clemence Poesy) in 1910. “Masterpiece” has long been a showcase for actors such as Helen Mirren in ”Prime Suspect,” Derek Jacobi in “I, Claudius” and Maggie Smith in “Downton.”

”Masterpiece” also has bolstered young performers, notably Keira Knightley, who played Lara in a 2002 version of “Doctor Zhivago.” “Birdsong” should win new fans for Redmayne, who played the young admirer in “My Week With Marilyn,” works as a Burberry model and won a Tony for the play “Red.”

“Birdsong” reveals Redmayne’s range: He conveys an appealing boyishness in the 1910 sections, and in the 1916 portions, he looks aged and battered by war and memories.

Because Tolkien himself has never been portrayed on the big screen. Colin Firth, Paul McCartney: Stars join campaign to save film studio (LONDON EVENING STANDARD)

Steven Spielberg, Sir Paul McCartney and Colin Firth are among the celebrities supporting a campaign to stop Twickenham Film Studios closing.

The studios were used in blockbusters War Horse and The Iron Lady and were also used for the Beatles’ films Help! and A Hard Day’s Night. But the studios, which occupy a two-and-a-half acre site, have failed to make money for the past three years. So far resident Maria Walker has collected 3,769 signatures for her Save Twickenham Studios petition.

 Sir Paul, pictured, said: “I have many fond memories of working at Twickenham Studios. It’s a fine example of a British film studio and it would be a great loss if it were to have nothing more to do with the British film industry.”

 Educating Rita actress Julie Walters has written to Business Secretary Vince Cable, who is the MP for Twickenham, appealing for him to step in.

The US star, 62, quipped that she was waiting for the chance to get Firth alone at the film bash after he gallantly picked up her Jimmy Choo stiletto after it fell off when she climbed the stairs to collect her award for Best Actress.

She joked later backstage: 'Livia Firth better not stand at the top of the stairs when I'm there.' Streep saw off competition from from Berenice Bejo, Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton and Viola Davis to be named Best Actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Firth chivalrously got down on one knee to place Streep's shoe on the floor so she could put it back on just before delivering her acceptance speech. Streep gave him a kiss on the lips as thanks. 

Afterwards, an teary-eyed Streep revealed she had forgotten to thank J Roy Helland, her make-up and hair assistant, in her acceptance speech. She said: 'I forgot to say his name, and all because of my f***ing shoe.'

They're all over the screen with their floppy fringes and cut-glass accents. Are posh actors edging out working-class talent?

He appears in Downton Abbey, one of a wave of TV dramas centred on class, and in the Radio Times this week the actor Rob James-Collier was asked whether working-class talent was being squeezed out of the profession.

James-Collier was born in Stockport, and defines himself as working class, and his answer was direct. As with so many other jobs at the moment, he said, you have to work for no money when starting out, and "how on earth are you going to finance that" if you don't come from a wealthy background?

His comments tapped into a question that has arisen repeatedly this year. Can anyone but the exceptionally well-heeled, wealthy, connected upper classes now make it in the arts?

In acting, in particular, the question was thrown into sharp relief in January, when the shortlist for the Bafta rising star award was announced. The list was remarkable for two reasons. All five nominees were men, and two were contemporaries at one school.

Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne are both old Etonians, and their nomination led to articles highlighting just how their schoolmates are dominating our stages and screens. There's Harry Lloyd, who starred in Great Expectations and The Iron Lady; Harry Hadden-Paton, currently in She Stoops to Conquer at the National Theatre; Damian Lewis, appearing in the hit TV drama Homeland; and Dominic West, star of The Wire and The Hour.

That's not to mention Benedict Cumberbatch, who went to Harrow, and Henry Cavill, star of the latest Superman film, who went to Stowe. Their success raises these issues. Do you need family wealth in order to become an actor? And is there currently a bias towards a certain class in casting? (Are we, to put it simply, buried deep in an era of floppy-fringed costume drama?)

Q. In researching your role, did you have a chance to meet Margaret Thatcher?

A. No, I haven't. Really, she has retired from public life almost entirely now in the last two years. So, no, I didn't. But I studied her, and I studied, you know, there's so much archival footage. And then the challenge was to imagine her present life, and that was completely an active imagination on Abi Morgan, the writer's part, and my part, but there was a lot of freedom in that, but also responsibility to a real person and to history. So, it was — it was really very, very satisfying as an actor, as an artist, to make a film that starts out about Margaret Thatcher and ends up being really about all of us. So, that's all I'll say about that.

Meryl Streep’s girls pick a winner for their Oscar winning mother (MAIL ON LINE)

When Mamie and Grace Gummer saw what their mother Meryl originally planned to wear to Sunday’s Oscars, they told her to get it off - and replace it with a gown that made her look like a winner. That’s where the gold lamé Lanvin gown came in.

It was made from old plastic bottles - that’s what Colin Firth’s wife Livia told me.She organised eco-friendly dresses and suits (Kenneth Branagh wore one) for the Oscar red carpet, including the dress chosen by Streep’s daughters for the ceremony. And she duly picked up the award for her brilliant portrait of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Streep and her representatives refused to divulge the provenance of the dress dumped by the Gummer girls (they use the name of their dad Don Gummer, who’s been wed to Meryl since 1978).

Firth, 51, was on hand backstage to congratulate the 62-year-old actor after her win and still giddy with excitement after making her acceptance speech, she planted a luvvie-style kiss on the British star's mouth.

This was Streep's third Oscar for lead actress, but her first since "Sophie's Choice" in 1982. Additionally, it was her 17th overall nomination.

Colin Firth, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Melissa Leo have all been signed up to present an Academy Award at the Oscars, following their wins at the ceremony last year. British actor Firth scooped the award for best actor last year for his performance as King George VI in The King's Speech.

Welsh-born Christian Bale walked away with best supporting actor for his role in The Fighter, Natalie Portman was crowned best actress for her role in Black Swan, and Melissa Leo won best supporting actress for her part in The Fighter.

Colin Firth: Tinker Tailor and The Artist dominated the BAFTA awards (SF Gate)

Espionage thriller “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” scooped was a double winner at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards on Sunday, taking home two top honors.

 The movie, starring Gary Oldman and John Hurt, was named the night’s Outstanding British Film and its co-writers Peter Straughan and his late wife, Bridget O’Connor, won the Best Adapted Screenplay prize.

Meanwhile, Hurt received the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award at the ceremony in London. Meryl Streep was named Best Actress for her role as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady,” and Jean Dujardin won Best Actor for the black and white silent movie “The Artist,” which also landed Michel Hazanavicius Best Director and Original Screenplay trophies and awards for cinematography, score and costume design.

The champagne is on ice and the red carpet has been rolled out in preparation for some of the biggest names from the silver screen who will be gathering for the Bafta film awards.

The event is the biggest movie event of the year in the UK and is seen as an accurate pointer for Oscar success.

Hosted by Stephen Fry, the awards take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden tomorrow and are being shown on BBC ONE.

On Friday night many of the starts turned out for a pre-Baftas party at the Savoy Hotel in London.

Actress Emma Watson, who has starred in the Harry Potter movies, arrived dressed entirely in red after launching a new Valentine's range for make-up brand Lancome.

Oldman is shortlisted for his role as George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and his name was greeted with cheers when it was announced at a dawn ceremony in Los Angeles.

The adaptation of John Le Carré’s labyrinthine spy novel was ignored at the Golden Globes and its makers expected the same treatment by the Academy.

Oldman, 52, a staple of British and Hollywood films since the 1980s, described his nomination as an “amazing” honour.

“You may have heard this before, but it has never been truer than it is for me today: it is extremely humbling, gratifying and delightful to have your work recognised by the Academy, and to join the celebrated ranks of previous nominees and colleagues,” he said.

A complicated change in the voting process led to nine contenders for best picture this year. They include Hugo, Martin Scorsese’s ode to cinema, which leads the field with 11 nominations. The Artist, frontrunner for the award, has 10 nominations in total.

The other best picture nominees are The Descendants, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse.

Kenneth Branagh is a best supporting actor nominee for My Week With Marilyn, in which he plays Sir Laurence Olivier.

The category also features two 82-year-olds - Christopher Plummer for Beginners and Max Von Sydow for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The latter is remarkable as Von Sydow’s role is entirely silent.

Meryl Streep landed her 17th Oscar nomination for The Iron Lady and looks all but certain to win in a category that shut out Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin), instead featuring Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis for The Help, Rooney Mara for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn.


Steven Spielberg, director of War Horse, has no place in the list of nominees. The chosen directors are Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist, Alexander Payne for The Descendants, Martin Scorsese for Hugo, Woody Allen for Midnight In Paris and Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life.

British nominees were few and far between - Janet McTeer is a best supporting actress nominee for Albert Nobbs but Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan were overlooked for their roles in Shame.

The Oscars take place on February 26.
