Michael Fassbender joined the stars at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his latest, Macbeth, which he admits he didn’t even see prior to Saturday.

“I’m going to be seeing it with everyone else at the premiere … I can tell you that Marion [Cotillard] as Lady Macbeth is incredible. I know that from being across from her during the scenes. She’s mesmerizing,” Fass told Entertainment Weekly.

The critics absolutely agreed. The film got some stellar reviews, including this rave from the U.K.’s Telegraph: “After seeing Fassbender and Cotillard in these roles, the thought of ever seeing anyone else play them fades into irrelevance.”

CANNES, France (AP) — Michael Fassbender doesn't know if the "Macbeth" curse carries over to movie adaptations, but he'd rather not test it.

"The Scottish film" is what Michael Fassbender calls his "Macbeth" adaption, which is set to premiere Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival. He's maintaining the theatrical superstition of not speaking the name of Shakespeare's play — at least he wasn't in an interview ahead of the festival.

"Sometimes I say it, sometimes I don't," Fassbender said. "It depends on the day."

"Macbeth," usually referred to by the euphemism "the Scottish play" by actors wary of its legendary spell, will be the final film to screen in competition at Cannes. Directed by Australian director Justin Kurzel and co-starring Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth, it has been eagerly awaited as the blood-soaked finale of the French Riviera festival, which concludes Sunday with the presentation of the Palme d'Or top prize.

Although interpreting Shakespeare is a traditional rite of passage for any British Isles actor of ambition, it wasn't a priority for Fassbender, the Oscar-nominated actor of "12 Years a Slave," ''Shame" and the "X-Men" films. The film marks the first entry into Shakespeare, on stage or screen, by the German-born, Ireland-raised Fassbender.

OK, who cares if Michael Fassbender looks nothing like Steve Jobs? Hotness feelers are out and tingling in anticipation of stumbling into the star in black turtleneck guise as shooting of “Steve Jobs,” the Aaron Sorkin-penned, Danny Boyle-directed biopic based on the 2011 Walter Isaacson biography, continues around the Bay Area. Yes, this is cinematic reboot at the center of the hacked Sony email upchuck/uproar that embarrassingly saw Sorkin allegedly griping to Sony/Columbia Pictures chairman Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin, “I don’t know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn’t going to care.”

 Sorkin later came around, writing that Fassbender is “a great actor whose time has come.” Understandable since the actor has proven himself fully capable of heating up the shadows and turning on the nuance when it comes the most troubled or villainous characters, from “Shame”‘s sex addict to the “X-Men” franchise’s Magneto to “12 Years a Slave”‘s rapey plantation owner.



So Fassbender fans have been getting dreamy about running into the hunk as he hunkers down to chomp broccoli amid the crunchy, high-’70s hippie coziness of La Med in Berkeley, holes up in the garage of Jobs’ childhood home in Los Altos, strolls the bland office parks of Silicon Valley, or maybe even introduces a benighted NeXT product or two at Davies Symphony Hall. This week yielded a blurry yeti-like sighting at a SF cafe — though that grainy backside could belong to any ole “toothy-smiled Irish/German sex god” (as the F— Yeah, Michael Fassbender! Tumblr puts it).

Emails about Michael Fassbender leaked in Sony hack just a day after another described Angelina Jolie as a 'brat'

Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin claimed that he had no idea who Michael Fassbender was according to the latest tranche of embarrassing emails leaked as part of the Sony cyber-hacking scandal.

The emails reveal, however, that others at Sony were aware of the actor - or at least the size of his manhood - with producer Michael De Luca allegedly claiming in one email that the star, 'makes you feel bad to have normal sized male genitalia.'

The actor gained notoriety after playing Brandon Sullivan in 2011’s sexual exploration movie Shame and appearing in a full-frontal nude scene that revealed an impressive appendage.

The latest leaks concern Sony’s failed attempts to make a movie about the life of Apple co-funder Steve Jobs, which Sorkin was adapting from Walter Isaacson’s biography.

The emails reveal Sorkin’s attempt to lobby for Tom Cruise to take the lead role and reveal his initial disdain when informed that Fassbender, Oscar-nominated for 12 Years A Slave, was favored for the role.

‘I don't know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn't going to care,’ was his sniffy reply to Columbia Pictures Chairman Amy Pascal and movie producer Scott Rudin.

It was Rudin who called Angelina Jolie a 'minimally talented spoiled brat' in another email, while the latest leak of documents by the group calling themselves ‘the Guardians of Peace,’ are from Pascal’s email box.

Her exchanges with Rudin and Sorkin reveal that an extensive list of Hollywood big hitters had been considered for the Jobs role.




However Sorkin eventually came round to the idea of Fassbender and wrote, 'F*** it. He's a great actor whose time has come.'

'That’s where I ended up,' Pascal replied.

'Yeah, if the movie’s good, he’ll be on the cover of everything and get nominated for everything,' Sorkin conceded.

Sony producer Michael De Luca chimed in with one email adding that the star, 'makes you feel bad to have normal sized male genitalia'.

There are a lot of hugely talented German-Irish man stars in the acting industry these days, with many of them considered some of the most sought after stars in Hollywood, taking on some of the biggest roles around. One of the biggest German stars in Hollywood right now, is the handsome actor Michael Fassbender, who has enjoyed a huge rise to Hollywood superstardom over the years.



Over the years, we have seen Michael Fassbender taking on some very impressive roles, in some very exciting movies, giving us some fantastic performances along the way. During the course of his career, we have seen Michael appearing in movies such as 300, Inglorious Basterds, X-Men: First Class, Prometheus, 12 Years a Slave, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Frank, to name just a few.

Michael Fassbender is far from finished yet though, as his Hollywood career is showing no signs of slowing down, with plenty of impressive movie roles coming in the next few years. Michael will appear in the movies Trespass Against Us, The Light Between Oceans, Slow West, Macbeth, and an untitled Terrence Malick project, which are all in production. Meanwhile, Fassbender will also appear in Irish Myths, Assassin's Creed, Prometheus 2, and X-Men: Apocalypse, which are all in development.

Michael Fassbender: Frank Exposes the Gulf Between the Brilliant and the Rest of Us (movie review)

Frank never takes off the head. But how does he eat, brush his teeth, or shave, Jon asks? Replies Soronprfbs' manager (Scoot McNairy): "You're just going to have to go with this." So we do. Director Lenny Abrahamson frames the film as a millennial myth, sealing the band away in a remote cabin in Ireland to record its first album, which sounds like whale noises, acid freak-outs, and the B-52s. (Composer Stephen Rennicks may be a genius himself.) Isolated among the trees, Frank walks tall — all Fassbender has to act with is his spine — and unnerves Jon with his ability to compose a song as easily as breathing. An off-the-cuff ode to a strand of fabric becomes a ditty worthy of prime Paul McCartney. He's no gimmick — he just looks like one — and like Jon, we're torn between wanting to share his gifts with the world and the looming fear that the world has become so cynical that it will write him off as a joke.

Wrested from the forest and steered at Jon's request to the streets of Austin's South by Southwest festival, Frank looks smaller and stupider — no better than the twee ­ukulele starlets and a whole lot less accessible. The real-world detour is grating, as are Jon's frequent tweets about the band, but that they cheapen the alienness of the film's first half is kind of the point. As much as we might wish they weren't, our brains are aligned with the small-minded and corruptible Jon: Our culture has so merged music and commerce that we can't be in the thrall of splendor without wondering how to market it. Even Frank himself falls sway to fame, muttering about YouTube, which he calls "secret camera," as if it's a mystifying cargo cult. Only Gyllenhaal's angry art-rock girl is aware of the fragility of his mental health: Frank doesn't wear the head because he can; he wears the head because he must.

Look closely at Frank's mask and you'll spot two plaster bandages by his nose, a hint of a life that's taken some lumps. Study Fassbender's limbs and see one of the best physical performances of the decade. His face never changes, but he has visible soul. In small movements — the twitch of a hand, a wobble under a door frame, a beer, and straw held uselessly by his painted mouth — Fassbender gives us glimpses of what Frank's isolating genius has cost him. Would we, too, sacrifice normal pleasures for a chance at eternal greatness? Or would we rather suffer alongside Jon, cursed with the heart-melting torture of knowing that the gods of music will never love us in return?

Modern movie stardom is dependent on many things, but perhaps none more so than well-known, good-looking faces appearing in new films.

So what would make a high-profile actor decide to spend most of a movie wearing a cartoon face that renders him unrecognizable? And apart from a sense of masochistic mischief, what would prompt someone to make a movie with just that
conceit?

(nope, this isn't from the movie either)

It's a question that will be running through your head with Magnolia Films' release Friday of a new indie dramedy "Frank," directed by the Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson and starring Michael Fassbender.

"Head" is a key word, since Fassbender — of course famous as Magneto in the "X-Men" series and in rigorous dramas such as "12 Years a Slave" — spends most of the film in a giant one, a fully concealing apparatus that looks like a cross between a Lego mini figure and one of those inflatable replicas of Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

(ok, now I'm just being silly)

If you see the movie, you may find yourself furtively checking your phone halfway through wondering if you misread Fassbender's billing — or, perhaps, calming a zealous spouse who wants to rush back to the ticket window asking for a refund. But it's indeed Fassbender under there, speaking in an American accent, as a character inspired by Frank Sidebottom, a real-life musician who, in the tradition of the Residents and Daft Punk, was almost never seen performing without the disguise.

"Frank" actually takes this character one step further, since the Daft Punk duo presumably takes its masks off in private. Fassbender's Frank keeps it on all the time--even, as another of his bandmates matter of factly notes, when showering and brushing his teeth.



Oh, and technically he's not Frank Sidebottom but a character named Frank who's inspired by him. In fact, Frank Sidebottom wasn't even Frank Sidebottom — he was a character played on-stage by the musician Chris Sievey in late-1980s England.(Sievey died in 2010.) The journalist Jon Ronson, at the time an aspiring rock keyboardist, was recruited rather spontaneously into Sievey's band, and he co-wrote this script in part based on that experience.

There are, then, layers of irony. Figuratively. But also literally.

Michael Fassbender’s movie magic is award-worthy

Michael Fassbender’s Larne uncle says it is only a matter of time before his famous nephew wins a major award.

Speaking exclusively to The Times the day after he saw his nephew star as Magneto in the new Xmen movie Days of Future Past, local man Mike Collins stated: “I took my son to see Xmen last night.

“To be honest, I’m not a big Xmen fan, but the movie I saw last night was brilliant.”

The most recent installation in the Xmen blockbuster franchise sees Xmen characters from the past and present unite to fight for the survival of their species.

Michael Fassbender has a special link to Larne, as his mother Adele is from the area and he regularly visited his grandparents at the town’s Wellington Parade during his childhood.

Michael was born in Germany, his father’s native land, before his family moved to Kilarney.

His uncle Mike recalled: “Michael would have been here on numerous occasions – Christmas, family get togethers.

“The last time he was in Larne would have been four years ago for my wedding reception at Ballygally castle.

“He always wanted to be an actor, since he was very young – since primary and secondary school he was always involved in some form of acting and drama.

“He was also a bit of a musician and played everything, including the guitar, which he still plays.”

Mike says that the family is very proud of their famous son, who worked ‘very, very hard‘ to make it in Hollywood.

He continued: “I thought he was brilliant in 12 Years A Slave and in Hunger.

“He has had some brilliant roles, but 12 Years A Slave is probably my favourite.

Watch James McAvoy And Michael Fassbender's 'X-Men' Impressions (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen)

In order to play Professor X and Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender had to study old footage of Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, who play the older versions of the two characters.

As the below video demonstrates, they perhaps studied the footage a little too closely. Asked by Stewart and McKellen to share their impressions, Fassbender says "Three days as the crow flies" in a pitch perfect Gandalf voice, then launches into a word for word recreation of a speech that McKellen delivered in front of the Royal Shakespeare Company about Macbeth in 1979. McAvoy, meanwhile, says "Logan, haven't you got a lesson to teach?" in a way that makes Stewart slap his knee in disbelief.

It's easy to see why McAvoy and Fassbender decided to only loosely channel Stewart and McKellen in the film rather than do the exact imitation you see in the video. Had they taken the latter approach, Days of Future Past would have been an early contender for funniest movie of the year.

Michael Fassbender Will Trespass Against Us With Brendan Gleeson And Sean Harris

As one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood right now, Michael Fassbender definitely has his pick of projects. From big blockbusters and franchises to more character-driven work, he continues to surprise us with where he shows up. With films like Prometheus 2, Assassin’s Creed and Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans all on his slate, the actor is hoping to continue to keep busy and for his next outing, will shoot a heist thriller titled Trespass Against Us.

Set to begin production this summer, the Adam Smith-directed film co-stars Brendan Gleeson, Rory Kinnear, Sean Harris, Killian Scott and Lyndsey Marshal. It will tell the story of the Cutler family, “who live as outlaws, hunting hares, ram-raiding stately homes and taunting the police. As the letter of the law finally catches up with Chad (Fassbender), he is torn between the archaic principles of his father (Gleeson) and what he believes is best for his children.”

If you recall, Fassbender was actually in talks for the role back in the Fall, but now it appears that he’s officially on board and that it will be his next film. No word on a release date yet, but with production getting underway this summer, it shouldn’t be too long before we see it hit theatres.

And a first look at the posters for the 2015 movie version of the cursed Scottish play - directed by Justin Kurzel - does nothing to quell the appetite

'It’s the first time I’ve played a character with no light, total darkness,' Marion Cotillard told Variety recently of playing Lady Macbeth.

'And when she loses control … I’m affected by the character I live with when I’m shooting, so I lost control of everything, like her, and it was really hard to handle.'

She also told The Independent: 'The depth of humanity in her – but it’s all driven away by fear and despair. How you do things to have a better life – but when they are against humanity, you will fail.'

And she has faith in her co-star: 'I saw a lot of movies [Fassbender] was in, and I have the feeling he’s reached another level here.

'When you start a scene and you don’t really know where you’re going to go, that’s a roller-coaster. Many times I was surprised by what he does in this movie, and this is priceless.'

The screenplay is by the famous writer Cormac McCarthy. What did you think while reading it?
I liked the description of the protagonists, motivated by greed, while around them people live in hardship. That is, the lives of poor people are on sale, according to the desire for some intent on accumulating wealth: the villa with pool, the Bentley, a diamond for his girlfriend. Everything to gain acceptance, respect, love.

You are insensitive to yourself?
I'm off to certain environments. My home is in London, not in Hollywood. And, when I work, I concentrate on what happens on the set. I lead a normal life. I am fortunate to be able to go where I want.

But then come back always to interpret amoral characters.
I don't like the positive, reassuring figures. Prefer to explore human frailties through provocative, roles that push the viewer to wonder about himself. For me this is the task of art and cinema.

Is there anything in particular that you can not stand?
The ease with which everyone is ready to make judgments. It seems to be back at the prejudices of the 50s. Perhaps the fault is also of the Internet and social media, which remove any filter to the way we communicate.

In various scenes of the movie you cry.
In the script was not expected, the tears came so unexpectedly, after that I relaxed. Yes, I am one who gets excited easily. I am moved by the grand gestures of affection or cruelty. And I cry when I am disappointed by my behavior.

What do you crave when you were a child?

Michael Fassbender At War On 'Macbeth' Set In Rainy Surrey (PHOTOS)

Michael Fassbender can be seen rehearsing an epic battle scene in new snaps from the set of a new Macbeth adaptation.

The British actor, currently lapping up plaudits for his supporting role in 12 Years A Slave, will play the titular role in the latest big-screen attempt at William Shakespeare's play, and soggy Farnham, Surrey, was the destination of choice today for the filming of one combat sequence.

We're guessing the cameras weren't rolling at this particular moment - given that Michael was wrapped up warmly in waterproof gear and a baby blue bobble hat. Probably not the costume of choice for Macbeth; a fictional King of England.
