Charming Brits oust Hollywood Hunks topping 2014 sexiest actors poll (Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom HIddleston, Michael Fassbender)

DAILY ECHO
11:42am Friday 14th February 2014

With the BAFTAs taking place in London's Royal Opera House this weekend, the british film industry is set to take over from the palm trees of Hollywood this award season, but it's not just the incredible films the UK has turned out in 2013 that has got the world's attention - it's the British male actors that have ladies everywhere in a spin according to the UK's leading dating website for extramarital affairs, IllicitEncounters.com.

A poll asking female members who makes their heart's beat faster on screen, and the top objects of desire were: Benedict Cumberbatch 38% in first place, followed by Tom Hiddleston 27%, and Michael Fassbender 19% third. This is a total turnaround from the 2013 poll which put Wolverine star Hugh Jackman 48% first, the ultra smooth Bradley Cooper 29% second, and the handsome Denzel Washington third with 16%.

British talent really did takeover in 2013, dominating our screens at home and cinema. Benedict Cumberbatch has won the heart of the nation with his fantastic take on Sherlock, giving new life to one of the Uk's best loved detectives, he also earned a National Television Award for 'Best Detective' early this year, and played a plantation owner in Steve McQueen's brilliant Academy Award and BAFTA nominated '12 Years a slave'.

Liam Neeson one of Tinseltown's biggest earners (THE SUN) BY PAUL BRADY Published: 5 hrs ago

LIAM Neeson was one of Tinseltown’s top 10 earners last year as his paydays from Taken 2 and The Grey saw him rake in €24m.

The Irishman came in 10th on a list of Hollywood heavyweights compiled by Forbes magazine headed up by reformed bad boy Robert Downey Jr.

It was finally a good year for Ballymena boy Neeson, 61, who threw himself into his work following the tragic death of wife Natasha Richardson.

Downey Jr, 48, rocketed from nowhere to lead the posse thanks to the massive box office superhero hits The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Daniel Day-Lewis likely to win Best Actor Oscar Reuters | 18 hours ago

LOS ANGELES: Daniel Day-Lewis is expected to make Hollywood history by winning his third Best Actor Oscar on Feb. 24 but the public is split over who deserves the Best Supporting Actor prize, a Reuters poll showed.

Day-Lewis, 55, has already picked up almost every major award this season for playing US President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Civil War-era drama “Lincoln” and he is front-runner for the top British BAFTA award on Feb. 10.

A Reuters Ipsos poll of 909 Americans found 21 per cent thought British-born Day-Lewis, 55, should win and 26 per cent said he was most likely to win Best Actor at the Oscars for Lincoln, a role he assumed both off and on set during filming.

He is up against Hugh Jackman, who came second in the Reuters poll for musical “Les Miserables,” Bradley Cooper in the quirky romance “Silver Linings Playbook,” Joaquin Phoenix in cult drama “The Master” and Denzel Washington as an alcoholic pilot in “Flight.”

If Day-Lewis does win, he will be the first man to take home the Best Actor statue three times, having won the award in 1990 for playing severely disabled Irish artist Christy Brown in “My Left Foot” and in 2008 for his role as oil prospector Daniel Plainview in “There Will be Blood.”

But Day-Lewis, who chooses his roles carefully and has only appeared in 10 films in the past 20 years, was not taking a win for granted. It took Spielberg three attempts to persuade him to sign up for the lead role in “Lincoln.”

“Members of the Academy love surprises, so about the worst thing that can happen to you is if you’ve built up an expectation,” the actor told reporters after winning the Screen Actors Guild trophy in Los Angeles last week.

Brendan Gleeson: Vera Farmiga loved improvising with Brendan Gleeson in 'Safe House'. (CONTACT MUSIC)

Vera Farmiga loved working on her improvisation skills with 'Safe House' co-star Brendan Gleeson.

The American actress stars as CIA operative Catherine Linklater in the movie alongside Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington but admitted it was Irish actor Brendan, who plays colleague David Barlow, who she enjoyed working with the most.

She told Stylist magazine: ''I spend most of my screen time with Brendan Gleeson and Sam Shepherd. I had a wicked time fighting off Brendan's improvisation advances. He's the equivalent of a Dobermann when it comes to freeballing. It's always going up against an Irishman's antics!''

Tom Hardy, Keira Knightly and Denzel Washington on Jonathan Ross Show (Metro)

The Jonathan Ross Show turned to big screen talent to up its game TV review:

This weekend's Jonathan Ross Show had already received its fair share of publicity thanks to Tom Hardy's embarrassment - but ultimately it was Keira Knightley's vodka-drinking antics that stole his thunder. Related

Tom Hardy, Keira Knightley and Denzel Washington brave the Jonathan Ross Show sofa (Picture: Rex Features) Given the pre-show publicity over whether or not Tom Hardy was 'acting', this edition of the Jonathan Ross Show had the potential to become a real talking point - since it featured the interview in which the Batman star 'pretended' to get all huffy over some 14-year-old Big Breakfast footage.

Ultimately, however - and, we, have to say, not entirely unpredictably - the whole thing proved a bit of an anti-climax - not least because firstly we all knew it was going to happen, thus removing the element of surprise - and secondly because the genial star was upstaged by Keira Knightley and her vodka-swilling antics.

Even she was taken aback by Wossy's offer of a drink - but regardless whether it loosened her tongue, she was certainly among the more entertaining guests of the night.

Brendan Gleeson: Acting is a great excuse to put on a few pounds (Metro)

Your character in The Guard is an unusual cop, cynical but honourable – what did you make of him?
I think he’s very profound, wounded but unbowed – in terms of his integrity. He obviously has a tenderness that has been bruised so much it’s unrecognisable. The compromises, pettiness, incompetence, corruption, they wear him down to such an extent that he becomes stuck and increasingly lonely. He had only one soulmate, really, which was his mother.

The writer/director, John Michael McDonagh, is brother of Martin McDonagh, who wrote In Bruges. They have a similar melancholic Irish sense of humour...
Well, they have, but they’re very different voices. There are touchstones that are central to both of them, and there is a gallows humour that is shared, but the sensibility is different.

You tend to mix smaller films with Hollywood thrillers like your next one, Safe House with Denzel Washington. Is that deliberate?
I have to keep practising the muscles. Denzel Washington is always interesting and my character was interesting. Also, I’ve played an American a couple of times but people do constantly need reassurance that I can do it. It’s important, at some point, to stop being ‘the Irish guy’, because it limits what you’ll be offered.

You shared scenes with your son Domhnall in Harry Potter. What was that like?
That was an absolute joy. The last couple of years have been great for him. He spent a time not working, which is tough, but now he’s battle-seasoned. He’s found out the mechanics of what it takes; how to deal with being on a set for a long time without anything to do, how to be in a scene but not driving it. His work is becoming fascinating to me. He’s pretty cool in True Grit.
The Guard is out now.

SAFE HOUSE Movie Trailer, Photos and Poster with Denzel Washington, Brendan Gleeson, and Ryan Reynolds

Daemon's Movies

SAFE HOUSE stars Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Vera Farmiga, Fares Fares, Robert Patrick, Nora Arnezeder, Liam Cunningham, Joel Kinnaman, Ruben Blades and is directed by Daniel Espinosa.

Synopsis: Oscar winner Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in the action-thriller Safe House. Washington plays the most dangerous renegade from the CIA, who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. When the South African safe house he’s remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds) escapes with him. Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead. For the past year, Matt Weston has been frustrated by his inactive, backwater post in Cape Town. A “housekeeper” who aspires to be a full-fledged agent, the loyal company man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself. When the first and only occupant he’s had proves to be the most dangerous man he’s ever met, Weston readies for duty. Tobin Frost has eluded capture for almost a decade. One of the best ops men that the CIA’s known, the ex-intelligence officer has given up assets and sold military intel to anyone with cash since he turned. From trading secrets to North Korea to aiding splinter cells, the damage he’s done to the U.S. is immeasurable. And he’s now back on the reservation with a secret. As soon as Frost is brought in for debriefing, mercenaries come and tear apart Weston’s safe house. Barely escaping, the unlikely partners must discover if their attackers have been sent by terrorists or someone on the inside who will kill anyone standing in the way. Now it’s up to Weston to figure out who he can trust before they’re both eliminated from the game.

The movie will be released to theaters on February 10, 2012. You can find all our coverage of Safe House here.
