Daniel Day-Lewis Shows Off Shirtless, Chiseled Bod on Steven Spielberg's Yacht: Picture

US WEEKLY
August 13, 2013 AT 4:45PM By Nicole Eggenberger

Oscar-winning bod! Daniel Day-Lewis showed off his impressive, toned beach bod aboard director Steven Spielberg's yacht in Sicily on Friday, Aug. 9. The Academy Award-winning Lincoln actor went shirtless in short colorful trunks while going for a swim with his family off the coast of Lipari.

Day-Lewis, 56, was photographed going for a dip off the boat with wife Rebecca Miller and sons Ronan, 15, and Cashel, 11. (The actor is also father to son Gabriel-Kane, 18, from a previous relationship with French actress Isabelle Adjani.) While enjoying a swim, Day-Lewis gave a glimpse of his multiple tattoos on his arms and chest.

Daniel Day Lewis immerses himself in the role of dad as he enjoys some father and son bonding By EMMA GRITT (MAIL ON LINE)

Father and son: Daniel Day-Lewis and his son Gabriel enjoyed a day together in Manhattan

Past life: Daniel and Isabelle Adjani, Gabriel's mother

Daniel Day Lewis is as reclusive as he is talented, so it was a surprise to see him enjoying a public day out with his son.

The British born actor was seen walking through Manhattan with 17-year old Gabriel.

Earlier this year, Daniel scooped his third Best Actor Oscar, but it's clear the role he relishes most is that of being a parent.

The silver-haired star was dressed casually in a blue jacket and jeans as he wandered around Soho.

Gabriel definitely bears a resemblance to his famous father, and looks like he could end up being as tall as the 6'1 Lincoln star.

In a rare interview, he told The Sun that becoming a parent was really special to him.

He said: 'It utterly changed my life. I don’t think there’s a parent on this earth who would give you a different answer.

He added: 'I don’t know if I can describe my feelings about being a father in real life.

'In real life, I have sons. Sons are different. Sons are a pushover. Daughters can be quite difficult. At least, that’s what I hear.'

Daniel and Gabriel's mum, French actress Isabelle Adjani, were together for six years before they went their separate ways, months before their son's birth.

Tom Hiddleston wants to work with Daniel Day-Lewis

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2013, where he picked up the Times Breakthrough Award, Tom said: ''I'd love to have a chance, even a chance, of trying to work with Daniel Day-Lewis because I admire him so much. I am so intrigued. He's always inspired me.

''Just the commitment he takes on every time he chooses to work and kind of what he chooses. You can always see this. He gives 110%.''

The 31-year-old actor - whose CV includes 'War Horse' and 'The Hollow Crown' - once had the chance to meet his idol and ruined the moment by ''gushing'' about how much he loved his work.

He reminisced: ''I met him once, a couple of years ago. It was long before I'd made a film and I was working in theatre and I happened to be somebody's plus one [to an event]. I stopped him on the stairs as I had to tell him he's one of the greatest things; being an actor.

''He said, in his beautiful English/Irish [accent], 'Thank you so much, it means a lot, thank you so much'. It was basically me gushing about how much I loved 'In the Name of the Father' and 'The Last of the Mohicans'.''

Tom Hiddleston looks up to Daniel Day-Lewis (FAN SHARE)

BY: ELIZABETH DARRELL

Tom Hiddleston is slowly starting to build an impressive resume for himself in Hollywood, but he admits that there's no one he looks up to more than Daniel Day-Lewis. The Thor 2 star recently won the Best Breakthrough at the South Bank Sky Art Awards, but he has maintained that he has a long way to go before he's in the league of actors like Day-Lewis.

While discussing his recently wrapped films, including Thor 2 and Only Lovers Left Alive, Hiddleston admitted that he's trying to find theater work next. He explains that he's sifting through scripts, saying, "I always try to stay true to a code about choosing work. I never want to just do a job for a job's sake, I want to do it because it is something I believe in."

The 2013 Awards Shortlist: Vote Now The final vote for your actors and films of the year! (EMPIRE)

Imagine your ideal awards ceremony. It wouldn't be four hours long. There would be no awkward/sexist/lame musical numbers. Winners would be allowed to take as long as they want, and thank whomever they want in their speeches, and would be positively encouraged to tell us shaggy dog stories about their experiences on set. And the whole thing would be irreverent, laidback, relaxed and very funny. In other words, The Jameson Empire Awards.

Yes, the show we're calling the antidote to Oscar fever is back — on Sunday March 24, to be precise. As ever, the majority of the categories will be decided by our readers, so we need YOUR votes for the best films and performances in the period running from January 27, 2012, to January 25, 2013.

It's a very open race, with box office behemoths Avengers Assemble, Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey all in contention. Then there are the smaller yet no less deserving entries like The Raid, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Sightseers, Argo, Looper and Django Unchained – as well as many, many more.

The individual categories will be hard-fought too. For example, fancy choosing between Looper, Prometheus, Avengers, The Hobbit and Dredd in Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy? Nope, us neither.

Best Male and Female Newcomers always throw up some interesting faces, including everyone from Beasts Of The Southern Wild’s Quevenzhane Wallis to Steve Oram for Sightseers, while Best Director will see a battle of the heavyweights with Christopher Nolan, Joss Whedon, Sam Mendes, Peter Jackson and Quentin Tarantino battling it out.

To vote, simply select your favourites in each category below — and don't forget, you'll be entered into a ballot to win a pair of tickets to the Jameson Empire Awards, where you could find yourself rubbing shoulders with this year’s nominees and special guests.

Old photos of a teenage Daniel Day-Lewis show hints of Lincoln By Soraya Roberts | The Juice – 23 hours ago

Want to see Daniel Day-Lewis as a 16-year-old? No, it's not his latest acting role -- this is the three-time Oscar winner as an actual teenager.

Photos have emerged of the 55-year-old "Lincoln" star in some of his first roles: as a Lincoln-esque Russian soldier Alexander Vershinin in Chekhov's "Three Sisters," and as a long-haired Feste in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night."

Day-Lewis transferred to Bedales, a creative independent school in Hampshire, England, in his early teens, and the move reportedly led to his film debut as a 14-year-old vandal in "Sunday Bloody Sunday." After graduating in 1975, he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Oscars 2013: Daniel Day-Lewis collects record third Oscar with a smile Lincoln star says he needs to 'lie down for a couple of years' as he dismisses attempts to label him greatest ever actor as 'daft' Maev Kennedy and Catherine Shoard The Guardian, Monday 25 February 2013 17.43 EST

Long after the Californian sun rose, the Oscar winners and losers were waking up after a night of loud applause and louder frocks, hilarious acceptance speeches and dire jokes.

As universally predicted, Daniel Day-Lewis took the Oscar for best actor for his towering performance in Lincoln, and also enters the record books as the first male actor to be a third-time victor, after winning for My Left Foot in 1990 and There Will Be Blood in 2008.

Day-Lewis is sometimes seen as a remote and slightly chilly figure, renowned for his obsessive preparation and for remaining in character throughout the filming – hard on his wife, the actor and director Rebecca Miller, given that the 16th president of the United States had a notoriously difficult relationship with his wife, who spent time in a mental hospital after his death.

"Since we got married 16 years ago, my wife Rebecca has lived with some very strange men," he told the audience. "Luckily she's the versatile one of the family and she's been the perfect companion to all of them."

Day-Lewis also won the audience accolade for the best joke when he insisted that Meryl Streep, presenter of his Oscar, had been Steven Spielberg's first choice to play Abraham Lincoln, and in return he himself had been destined to play Margaret Thatcher.

Backstage after his win, he said he could not think of anyone else he urgently wants to play. "I need to lie down for a couple of years. It's really hard to imagine doing anything after this." He dismissed any attempt to label him the greatest actor of all time as "daft".

Daniel Day-Lewis on verge of historic Oscar treble thanks to method acting (DAILY RECORD)

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS has gone from big screen oddball to become the golden boy of the Oscars.

Tonight, if – as the bookies expect and most critics predict – he collects the Academy Award for his perfect portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, he will have created history.

It will mean that the London-born star – who previously won for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood – is the first to complete a hat-trick of best actor Oscars.

With tonight’s triumph seeming a virtual certainty, it has caused at least one critic to ask whether Daniel Day-Lewis might just be the greatest screen actor of all time.

I would certainly place him up there with screen greats such as Spencer Tracy, Marlon Brando, James Stewart and James Cagney.

Like those iconic figures, Day-Lewis, 55, has the ability to so absorb himself in a performance that you forget that he is acting.

David Oyelowo, who has recently appeared in Lincoln, has complained that the class system in Britain compromises opportunities for actors.

By Alice Vincent, Entertainment Writer, online7:00AM GMT 12 Feb 2013

Actor David Oyelowo has complained about the limitations of British acting after finding great opportunities in America. Oyelowo, who was born in Oxford to Nigerian parents and now lives in Los Angeles, said that British actors suffered from a class-based "glass-ceiling", which doesn't exist in Hollywood.

In an interview with the Radio Times, Oyelowo discussed the difference between the countries: "America has its own class system, but it's about money. The more money you have, the higher up the ladder you are. Here, you can have talent and money and still be deemed working class. That means there are certain glass ceilings."

Oyelowo played Danny Hunter in BBC MI5 drama Spooks between 2002 and 2004, but has since taken on film roles in The Last King of Scotland, The Help, a film about the civil rights movement in 1960s America, and the Oscar-nominated Lincoln. Oyelowo grew up on a North London council estate, and became an actor after winning a scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His first major role was as Henry VI for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001.

Daniel Day-Lewis likely to win Best Actor Oscar Reuters | 18 hours ago

LOS ANGELES: Daniel Day-Lewis is expected to make Hollywood history by winning his third Best Actor Oscar on Feb. 24 but the public is split over who deserves the Best Supporting Actor prize, a Reuters poll showed.

Day-Lewis, 55, has already picked up almost every major award this season for playing US President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Civil War-era drama “Lincoln” and he is front-runner for the top British BAFTA award on Feb. 10.

A Reuters Ipsos poll of 909 Americans found 21 per cent thought British-born Day-Lewis, 55, should win and 26 per cent said he was most likely to win Best Actor at the Oscars for Lincoln, a role he assumed both off and on set during filming.

He is up against Hugh Jackman, who came second in the Reuters poll for musical “Les Miserables,” Bradley Cooper in the quirky romance “Silver Linings Playbook,” Joaquin Phoenix in cult drama “The Master” and Denzel Washington as an alcoholic pilot in “Flight.”

If Day-Lewis does win, he will be the first man to take home the Best Actor statue three times, having won the award in 1990 for playing severely disabled Irish artist Christy Brown in “My Left Foot” and in 2008 for his role as oil prospector Daniel Plainview in “There Will be Blood.”

But Day-Lewis, who chooses his roles carefully and has only appeared in 10 films in the past 20 years, was not taking a win for granted. It took Spielberg three attempts to persuade him to sign up for the lead role in “Lincoln.”

“Members of the Academy love surprises, so about the worst thing that can happen to you is if you’ve built up an expectation,” the actor told reporters after winning the Screen Actors Guild trophy in Los Angeles last week.

Kathleen Kennedy talks Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln By Ben Arnold | Movie Editor's Blog – 6 hours ago (Yahoo)

New Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has lifted the lid on Daniel Day-Lewis's work on the set of 'Lincoln', which she produced with Steven Spielberg.

Day-Lewis, known for his full immersion into character while on set, had an intimidating command of the material, despite the size of his role in the film, in which he plays the revered US president.

Day-Lewis... as 'the president' Abraham Lincoln (Copyright: Rex)

“Certainly the minute you heard on the radio, ‘The president is coming to the set,’ which is what we would hear, and Daniel would walk onto the set, you could hear a pin drop,” she told the New York Times.

“And that was really the way every single day went.”

She then went on to talk about the effect his work had on the other members of the cast.

“He had 45 pages of dialogue in the first two weeks of shooting, and he never missed a word,” she continued.

“I mean, it was the other actors that were interesting to watch because once he came in and did a four-minute dialogue scene and didn’t miss, everybody looked like deer in the headlights.

James Dempsey : Why we should give Daniel Day Lewis some peace (INDEPENDENT)

By James Dempsey
Saturday January 26 2013

This weekend marks the Irish release of Lincoln, director Steven Spielberg's biopic of the American president's efforts to outlaw slavery and end the civil war in the final few months of his life.

A project eight years in the making, recounting the shady dealings often required to turn ideological moralities into political realities, Lincoln is a chamber piece of subtle speeches and exquisite performances. And in the same week as Barack Obama's second inauguration, Lincoln's political toing and froing feels distinctly fresh and timely.

To the forefront of the film, of course, is Daniel Day Lewis' work as Honest Abe, in what is perhaps the quietest and most restrained performance of the esoteric actor's career. It should come as no surprise that the most-celebrated actor of his generation playing the most-celebrated American president of all time has already resulted in mass award celebrations.

Day Lewis, famous for living for months on end in character, originally turned down the role, concerned that he couldn't do justice to this idol of American politics. But after tireless campaigning by the director, Day Lewis signed on. Perhaps it was written in the stars – who better to play the man whose face graces the penny and five dollar-bill than the man whose face has appeared on an An Post stamp?

Of course, awards' season presents its own nationalistic difficulties with regard to Day Lewis. The son of an Irish-born Poet Laureate to Queen Elizabeth II, raised and educated in England's green and pleasant land, Day Lewis made his way across the Irish Sea in 1989, taking up dual citizenship in 1993.

As such, we Irish have taken him to our hearts, and at times have become rather militant about it. When The Daily Mail listed the actor among the "Britons" to have found triumph at the Golden Globes earlier this month, the furore was felt across social media.

Will Daniel Day-Lewis be first actor to win 3 Academy Awards for Best Actor? (SCREEN INVASION)

By John H. Foote

Who else might have been deserving?

In the history of the Academy Awards, since 1927, no single actor has managed to win three Academy Awards for Best Actor. Nine have won twice, while Jack Nicholson has won twice for Best Actor and once for Best Supporting Actor. Character actor Walter Brennan won three times as Best Supporting Actor before 1950 and at least one actor should have won three Best Actor awards in a span of six years in the sixties, but did not. Incredibly Katherine Hepburn won four times as Best Actress, the first in the thirties, back to back awards in the sixties and the final one in 1981 putting her far ahead of both the men and women.

Thirteen women have won twice for Best Actress, with Ingrid Bergman and Meryl Streep each winning another for Best Supporting Actress, and many of the ladies, could have won more than they did. Is it not bizarre that Streep just became a two time Best Actress winner only a year ago??

Daniel Day-Lewis will likely become the first actor to be a triple Best Actor winner for his magnificent performance in Lincoln (2012), the years best film. Day-Lewis first won for his stunning work in My Left Foot (1989) and just five years ago for There Will Be Blood (2007) arguably the greatest male performance ever put on film. His win for Lincoln (2012) will place him where no other actor has ever been, but in hindsight, several could have been perhaps should have been three time winners (or more) before now.

Fredric March, Spencer Tracey, and Gary Cooper were all deserving two time Oscar winners, with not one of them having a chance at a third. However, the other six all should be three time winners.

Golden Globes 2013: Hugh Jackman, Daniel Day-Lewis win actor honors (LA TIMES)

By John Horn
January 13, 2013, 8:05 p.m.

In an evening with some mild surprises, two favorites won the top actor honors at the Golden Globes: Daniel Day-Lewis for "Lincoln" and Hugh Jackman for "Les Miserables."

For playing the 16th president of the United States, Day-Lewis won for best actor in a drama. Clips from the movie were introduced earlier by former President Bill Clinton. "Are you sure there's room for another ex-president on this stage?" the actor said in accepting the prize from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.

Jackman won for best actor in a musical or comedy for starring as the prisoner turned humanitarian Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables." He thanked director Tom Hooper, adding that he nearly pulled out of the project.

"I never told you this," Jackman told Hooper from the stage, "but three weeks in, we had a terrible rehearsal, and I was going to call you and tell you someone else had to play this role. My wife talked me out of it."

Daniel Day-Lewis on verge of Oscar history as he wins Critics Choice (HERALD)

By Kirsty Blake Knox
Friday January 11 2013

Daniel Day-Lewis has taken his first step towards triple-Oscar glory by winning the coveted Best Actor gong at the Critics Choice Awards.

The Critics Choice Awards, held in California, are regarded as the most reliable guide to who will bag an Academy Award at next month's glitzy show.

And Day-Lewis (55) has taken one step closer to that golden statuette which, if he wins, will make him the only male actor in history to win a hat-trick of Best Actor Oscars. Katharine Hepburn, a 1930s super star wholater enjoyed a career revival, won four academy awards for best actress.

The 18th annual Critics Choice ceremony was attended by some of Hollywood's biggest names last night.

Anne Hathaway (30) showed off her pixie do in a shimmering Oscar de la Renta gown. Emily Blunt (29) showed off her petite physique in a fitted white dress with an embellished pearl neckline.

Her film Looper picked up the award for Best Sci-Fi.

But all eyes were on Day-Lewis, who lives in Co Wicklow, and is on the verge of making Oscar history.

Only nine men including Marlon Brando, Spencer Tracy, Tom Hanks and Dustin Hoffman have taken home the Oscar for Best Actor twice. But Day-Lewis, who holds both an Irish and British passport, will over take them all over if he wins his third award.

It is the actor's fifth nomination in the category. In 1989 he won the gong for his portrayal of Christy Brown in the movie My Left Foot.

And in 2007 Day-Lewis struck Oscar gold again for his role as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood.
