James McAvoy misses out on well deserved BAFTA nomination

JAMES McAVOY missed out on a BAFTA nomination for Filth yesterday – sparking a furious reaction from co-star Martin Compston.

There was no best actor nod for the 34-year-old Scot – who plays a drug-addled policeman – with Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Bruce Dern and Chiwetel Ejiofor on the shortlist.

Angry Compston, 29, tweeted: “Not only was James McAvoy in Filth best performance of last year, it was one of best I’ve seen in my life.”

Irvine Welsh, who wrote the book the film was based on, said: “Don’t see what else James McAvoy could do on-screen. “Inspired to get back to work. Disappointments are the greatest motivators.”

Oscar 2014 Best Supporting Actor Nominations Predictions: Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto, Tom Hanks, Bradley Cooper Lead Crowded Field

The Best Supporting Actor category continues to be an enigma as the category amasses more potential nominees.

Michael Fassbender is still seemingly leading the Best Supporting Actor race for his work on "12 Years A Slave." The actor is one of the most respected performers working in Hollywood and after the Academy ignored his acclaimed performance in "Shame" it is almost impossible to believe that Fassbender will not be nominated. Additionally, he has the advantage considering the film is the front-runner to win Best Picture.

Jared Leto continues to get buzz for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club." Leto is unrecognizable in his performance and the fact that he lost weight for the role could be helpful in claiming an Academy Award. While he may not win, Leto is a lock for a nomination.

The rest of the candidates are still only possibilities and long-shots. Among them are Barkhad Abdi ("Captain Phillips"), Chris Cooper ("August: Osage County") and Tom Hanks ("Saving Mr. Banks"). Abdi is a newcomer and that alone can hurt his chances, while Cooper's role is not receiving much buzz from pundits. Meanwhile, Hanks is in "Captain Phillips" as well, and the Academy may want to nominate another actor instead of giving Hanks two nominations.

Emma Thompson has taken on some difficult roles during her career, winning Oscars and numerous other awards for her performances in works based on classic literature and  historical events. But, says the actress, one role stands apart from the rest.

“She’s the most difficult person I’ve ever played,” Thompson says of her role as P.L. Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books, in the forthcoming film Saving Mr. Banks.

The movie, coming out this holiday season, is Disney’s take on Travers’ life and, eventually, the stormy relationship she had with the studio’s own mastermind, Walt Disney. Here, TIME presents an exclusive first official look at Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. In the scene shown above, Travers has come to Disneyland, in 1961, to meet with the man himself.

Of course, today’s audiences have long enjoyed their resulting cinematic collaboration: Disney’s 1964 Mary Poppins movie. But the film was a struggle to make: even though Disney had a personal interest in Travers’ tale of a magical nanny, it being one of his daughters’ favorites, the author was not interested in her work being changed by a movie studio.

“She was a woman of quite eye-watering complexity and contradiction,” says Thompson, whose first-ever movie-going experience was seeing a Disney movie, Fantasia, as a child. “Often I play people who are controlled by some very clear guiding moral principles. Like Margaret Schlegel [in Howards End], guided by the early principles of feminism and equal rights, and Elinor Dashwood [in Sense and Sensibility], guided by the principles of decency and honor. There are very clear moral prisms these women pour life through, and I understand that very well. And [Travers] was not like that at all. She was far more chaotic and confused and morally various.”

Henry Cavill: Box Office: MAN OF STEEL (ALT guide)

Man of Steel will quite likely — sort of — break the June record at the North American box office this weekend, according to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com. Things started out quite well for the $225 million-budgeted 2013 Superman reboot directed by Zack Snyder (300, Sucker Punch), and starring Henry Cavill (The Tudors) as Clark Kent aka Superman: on Thursday evening at the US/Canada box office, Man of Steel grossed an estimated $12 million, plus $9 million at Thursday midnight shows. That’s quite a bit better than Shane Black / Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3, which opened with $15.6 million from Thursday evening / midnight shows in early May. 

The current opening-weekend-in-June record officially belongs to Lee Unkrich’s Disney / Pixar-distributed, Tom Hanks-voiced Toy Story 3, which scored $110.3 million in early June 2010, or approximately $111 million adjusted for inflation. However, once inflation is taken into account (as it always should) Toy Story 3 is actually behind Alfonso Cuarón / Daniel Radcliffe’s fantasy Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which collected $93.68 million in 2004, or about $120 million today.

Liam Neeson to present an Oscar on Sunday (JOE)

Ballymena local Liam Neeson will present an Oscar this Sunday at the Academy Awards

Taken star Liam Neeson, 60, will present an award at the prestigious Oscar ceremony on Sunday February 24. Neeson was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for Schindler'st List in 1994, but lost out to Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump.

Neeson has seen his star rise in recent years with lead roles in Unknown, Taken 2 and The Grey amongst supportive roles in Batman Begins, Love Actually, Gangs of New York and Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Daniel Day-Lewis on verge of Oscar history as he wins Critics Choice (HERALD)

Daniel Day-Lewis has taken his first step towards triple-Oscar glory by winning the coveted Best Actor gong at the Critics Choice Awards.

The Critics Choice Awards, held in California, are regarded as the most reliable guide to who will bag an Academy Award at next month's glitzy show.

And Day-Lewis (55) has taken one step closer to that golden statuette which, if he wins, will make him the only male actor in history to win a hat-trick of Best Actor Oscars. Katharine Hepburn, a 1930s super star wholater enjoyed a career revival, won four academy awards for best actress.

The 18th annual Critics Choice ceremony was attended by some of Hollywood's biggest names last night.

Anne Hathaway (30) showed off her pixie do in a shimmering Oscar de la Renta gown. Emily Blunt (29) showed off her petite physique in a fitted white dress with an embellished pearl neckline.

Her film Looper picked up the award for Best Sci-Fi.

But all eyes were on Day-Lewis, who lives in Co Wicklow, and is on the verge of making Oscar history.

Only nine men including Marlon Brando, Spencer Tracy, Tom Hanks and Dustin Hoffman have taken home the Oscar for Best Actor twice. But Day-Lewis, who holds both an Irish and British passport, will over take them all over if he wins his third award.

It is the actor's fifth nomination in the category. In 1989 he won the gong for his portrayal of Christy Brown in the movie My Left Foot.

And in 2007 Day-Lewis struck Oscar gold again for his role as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood.

Tom Ford reveals his film A Single Man was based on his own family By Liz Hoggard (YAHOO)

American fashion designer-turned-film director Tom Ford has revealed that his 2009 Oscar nominated movie, 'A Single Man', which starred Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, was partly autobiographical.

In an interview with the 'Times' newspaper, he  explained that the script of the film, inspired by a Christopher Isherwood short story about a fastidious, suicidal academic, was deeply resonant to his own life.

"There were scenes right out of our lives: my sister, my mother, the emotions," he said. "The way I was feeling at the time. I didn't know if I cared if I lived or died. Where is the beauty of the world? Discovering the beauty of the world, having an epiphany. I've had those moments where time stands still and I think: 'It's OK'."

Daniel Day-Lewis Looks Poised to Make Oscar History By Adam Wenger on October 19, 2012 (zimbio)

Don't look now, but if Daniel Day-Lewis manages to score a Best Actor Oscar for his role in Lincoln, he will become the first man in the history of the Academy Awards to win three golden trophies. 

The 55-year-old first won Best Actor in 1989 for his work in My Left Foot, and then again in 2008 for his portrayal of the ruthless oil baron Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. Having appeared in just 20 films over the course of his career, he's good for a 10 percent winning percentage. If he were an NFL team, that number wouldn't be too impressive. But as an actor, it puts him in a field of his own. Tom Hanks, who has also been named Best Actor twice, has 50 films to his credit, which gives him a 4 percent winning percentage.

Can Daniel Day-Lewis Break The Spielberg Acting Awards Oscar Losing Streak For 'Lincoln?' AWARDS BY OLIVER LYTTELTON AUGUST 24, 2012 12:22 PM (PLAYLIST)

With festival season getting underway in only a few short days, we're about to see which actors will gain traction for the awards season ahead of us. But there's at least one major performance that we won't know about for a few months yet (or until we see a trailer), and it's one that's probably been the presumptive front-runner ever since the film was announced: Daniel Day-Lewis in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," the director's biopic of Civil War-winning President Abraham Lincoln, focusing on the last few months of his life before his assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth.

After all, it's one of the most lauded actors of modern times, who last won in 2007 for "There Will Be Blood," in the kind of transformative historical figure role that always pays dividends with Academy voters, and working for the first time with America's most beloved filmmaker, a two-time Best Director winner. Once Day-Lewis came on board, many assumed that they might as well start carving his name on the statue. But will that really be the case? Looking at history a little more closely, it becomes clear not only that Spielberg's not necessarily the Oscar favorite that he's made out to be, but also that a win for Day-Lewis would be unprecedented on a number of levels. So before people decide that it's already sewn up based on a poster that debuted this week, let's look at the stats. It's certainly true that Spielberg's films have been frequent visitors to the Academy. Twelve of his movies have been nominated for four or more awards, and three got more than ten.

But when he picked up Best Director for the second time, for "Saving Private Ryan," the film lost Best Picture to "Shakespeare In Love." And perhaps even more importantly, no Spielberg film has won an Oscar since. "Munich" got five nominations, including Best Picture, Director and Screenplay, and "War Horse" got six, including Picture (but not director). But it's fifteen years since a film by the director actually picked up an Oscar. And perhaps more importantly, no actor or actress has ever won an Oscar for a performance in a Spielberg film.

There have been plenty of nominations: Melinda Dillon for "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind"; Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery and Oprah Winfrey for "The Color Purple"; Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes for "Schindler's List"; Anthony Hopkins for "Amistad"; Tom Hanks for "Saving Private Ryan" and Christopher Walken for "Catch Me If You Can." But none actually converted it for a win, and maybe it's because there were more deserving winners, or maybe it's because Academy voters have never quite shaken the view that Spielberg is a master technician first and foremost. But it's a fairly bleak precedent for Day-Lewis, as well as Sally Field, David Strathairn and Tommy Lee Jones, who are said to be the supporting players to keep an eye on, as Mary Todd Lincoln, William Seward and Thaddeus Grant respectively.

WATCH: Gerard Butler Coaches Kids, Woos Soccer Moms in Playing For Keeps WATCH THIS || BY: JEN YAMATO || AUGUST 8, 2012 01:35 PM EDT (MOVIE LINE)

I'll go see this Playing for Keeps because it vaguely reminds me of those '90s rom-coms that used to star Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks and John Cusack, the kind of movies about grown-ups of a certain age dealing with parenting and careers and their own crippling failings while still falling in love. (Like I said: A vague reminder. Let's just all blow off work and go Netflix One Fine Day, shall we?) Also, those brief soccer-tot scenes remind me of Ladybugs. And The Big Green. And I kinda want to see Gerard Butler juggle a few balls and shoot a Gatorade bottle off a goalpost with a soccer ball. For that matter, forget Butler: I'd like to see Biel, reportedly a soccer ace in real life, dribble circles around Butler on the pitch. Give me that movie, Hollywood.

Hugh Grant's fans would typically expect to see him sipping a cappuccino in a middle-class bistro as part of a gentle romantic comedy.

But the owner of England's most famous foppish fringe is sure to raise a few eyebrows with his performance in the adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas.

In the film, which takes in a number of interconnected stories from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future, Grant play several cameo roles, including that of a cannibal.

Grant had grown frustrated with his typecasting as the go-to British romantic comedy star following great success in Richard Curtis' Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Notting HIll.

He told Empire: "I do a lot of killing and raping. I wear an awful lot of prostheic makeup. You probably wouldn't know I was in the film. But it was a laugh. I slightly called my own bluff."

Today Warner Bros. has released 22 individual images from the film, giving you your first official look at the world we will be playing in and the number of eclectic and diverse images make me that much more excited to see it.

The pics feature a variety of cast members, some are obvious, some not so much. Many of the actors were asked to play multiple roles in the film such as Hugh Grant who says he has "six cameo parts in this strange, ambitious film" including a "cannibal, about 2000 years in the future". David Whishaw will play three different roles, saying he will play "Frobisher in the thirties; a female American in the seventies, in the Luisa Rey section; and a smallish role, where I'm basically an extra, in a modern-day nursing home, in the Timothy Cavendish section." Jim Sturgess will have six roles in the film, including that of Adam Ewing, a character whose part in the story bookends the novel from which it's based.

Colin Farrell Gets Disneyfied With 'Saving Mr. Banks' June 16th, 2012 4:01pm EDT | (STAR PULSE)

Colin Farrell is about to get a little more family-friendly. The "Fright Night" star will be embracing his paternal instincts as he signs on for a rare "dad" role in "Saving Mr. Banks," according to Deadline.

Farrell joins Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in the true behind-the-scenes story of the long, hard road to making "Mary Poppins," in which Walt Disney (Hanks) waged a 14-year courtship to persuade Australian author P.L. Travers (Thompson) to sell him the rights to her story of the beloved nanny. Travers (obviously) eventually gave in but remained prickly about it all the way to the end and apparently despised the film's animated sequences.

"Mary Poppins" was a very personal story for Travers, as it reflected the hardships in her real life and her relationship with her father (to be played by Farrell), who died when she was seven years old. Travers' father inspired the character of Mr. Banks, played by David Tomlinson in "Mary Poppins."
