Robert Redford and Brendan Gleeson team up in tense new thriller (INDEPENDENT)

HOLLYWOOD-legend Robert Redford and Brendan Gleeson have teamed up in a new thriller, which is soon to open in the US.

In All the President's Men, Robert Redford famously played a reporter hunting clues that led to President Richard Nixon's downfall. In The Company You Keep, the Oscar winner is the one who is hunted by a journalist, this time played by Shia LaBeouf.

Unlike the 1976 account of the Watergate scandal, The Company You Keep is a fictional thriller based on a 2003 novel by Neil Gordon, and follows a former leftwing American militant whose past comes back to haunt him.

Redford plays Jim Grant, a respectable lawyer and widower with a young daughter whose life is thrown into turmoil when his secret identity, as a member of The Weather Underground decades earlier, is revealed by a tenacious reporter.

Hugh Grant's fans would typically expect to see him sipping a cappuccino in a middle-class bistro as part of a gentle romantic comedy.

But the owner of England's most famous foppish fringe is sure to raise a few eyebrows with his performance in the adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas.

In the film, which takes in a number of interconnected stories from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future, Grant play several cameo roles, including that of a cannibal.

Grant had grown frustrated with his typecasting as the go-to British romantic comedy star following great success in Richard Curtis' Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Notting HIll.

He told Empire: "I do a lot of killing and raping. I wear an awful lot of prostheic makeup. You probably wouldn't know I was in the film. But it was a laugh. I slightly called my own bluff."

Based on the novel by David Mitchell, the film explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. The cast includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Ben Whishaw, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, James D'Arcy, Halle Berry and Keith David and the pic is set to hit theaters on October 26 following its Toronto premiere.

Today Warner Bros. has released 22 individual images from the film, giving you your first official look at the world we will be playing in and the number of eclectic and diverse images make me that much more excited to see it.

The pics feature a variety of cast members, some are obvious, some not so much. Many of the actors were asked to play multiple roles in the film such as Hugh Grant who says he has "six cameo parts in this strange, ambitious film" including a "cannibal, about 2000 years in the future". David Whishaw will play three different roles, saying he will play "Frobisher in the thirties; a female American in the seventies, in the Luisa Rey section; and a smallish role, where I'm basically an extra, in a modern-day nursing home, in the Timothy Cavendish section." Jim Sturgess will have six roles in the film, including that of Adam Ewing, a character whose part in the story bookends the novel from which it's based.

David Mitchell's famously sprawling, genre-bending novel has been adapted by the trio of the Wachowski siblings Lana and Andy and Tom Tykwer, along with an all-star cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess and Hugh Grant. Each of the actors will play at least six different parts in the inter-weaving narratives, which range from the adventures of an American intellectual traveling in the South Pacific in the 19th century to a futuristic society in Hawaii, where the last remaining humans live like early natives after the rest of humanity self-destructs.

Hugh Grant says he wasn't sure if he could pull off portraying six different villains in his upcoming film, "Cloud Atlas." "I have six cameo parts in this strange, ambitious film," Grant told Empire magazine. "I do a lot of killing and raping. I wear an awful lot of prosthetic make up, too. You probably won't know that I am in the film! But it was a laugh. I thought before I read it that I'd turn it down, which I normally do, but I was interested in meeting the Wachowskis because I have always admired them enormously. And they are so charming and fascinating."

 The 51-year-old actor has more often appeared in Romantic Comedies than Science Fiction films, but says he realized the film was going to be more of a challenge than what he was used to. "In one of the parts I am a cannibal, about 2000 years in the future, and I thought, 'I can do that. It's easy,'" Grant said. "And then I am suddenly standing in a cannibal skirt on a mountaintop in Germany and they are saying, 'You know, hungry! We must have that flesh-eating, like a leopard who is so hungry...' and I am thinking, 'I can't do that! Just give me a witty line!'"

 The film, which is based on a novel by David Mitchell, follows six different interconnected stories set in different times and place, including that of a journalist who investigates alleged corruption at a nuclear power plant in 1975 and a tribesman living a primitive life in a post-apocalyptic future. The movie, which is slated for release on October 19, 2012, also stars Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Halle Berry and Susan Sarandon.

Dame Helen Mirren tops over 50s style icon poll

Dame Helen Mireen has been hailed as the ultimate style icon for women over 50.

The Oscar-winning actress' classic, elegant and understated look saw off competition from internationally recognised 60s model Twiggy, to claim the title.

Making up the top five were actress turned activist Joanna Lumley in third, followed by Lulu in fourth and Dame Judi Dench.

A spokeswoman for Viyella, the clothing brand who commissioned the poll, said: ''Dame Helen Mirren has as much style, grace and elegance off screen as she does on it and is a fitting icon for the women of her generation.

''All too often we are bombarded with images of youth and temporary trends, so it's great to see such a varied list filled with women of real class.''

Former Spice Girl turned successful fashion designer Victoria Beckham was the youngest woman to appear on the list. The mum-of-four took a surprise spot just outside the top five, showing she has pulling power with those who appreciate refined fashion irrespective of age.

Out of 1,000 women polled, nine out of 10 admitted that they have started to enjoy shopping as they have got older. The same percentage said they took pride in their appearance and more than half said they never worry about dressing inappropriately for their age.

Pint-size pop princess Kylie Minogue took an impressive 12th place, while glowing talent show judge Amanda Holden clearly has the talent to take 14th.

A surprise name on the list is fashion conscious Samantha Cameron, the Prime Minister's wife, who followed bump-at-the-front Amanda Holden in 15th.

A Viyella spokeswoman added: ''Victoria Beckham has proven once again that she carries universal appeal.

''As the youngest woman in the results, she shows that women in their fifties aren't afraid to embrace younger styles when they're done the right way.''

''These results show that age really isn't a barrier to style or confidence. In fact, it can be quite the opposite.

''It's inspiring to see that many women over fifty are more comfortable in their self, confident in their style and brave enough to explore new clothing options.''

With a cast that already includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Keith David, David Gyas and Susan Sarandon, you'd think that the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer would be done rounding up talent for their adaptation of Cloud Atlas. However, Screen Daily has word that Hugh Grant is now signing on to join the big screen version of David Mitchell's complex novel of the same name. The project is certainly much more promising than his last big screen endeavor, the painfully generic romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans?
Likely Grant will be taking on multiple roles like the rest of the cast as the story follows six plot threads across time—a 19th century notary on a Pacific expedition, a bisexual musician in the 1930s, a female journalist in a thriller in 1970s California, an aging publisher in London in the present, a clone in a futuristic dystopia, and a Pacific survivor in a post-apocalyptic world. What makes this even crazier is all these worlds fold in on themselves. Grant is certainly a welcome addition to this already impressive cast, and I just can't wait to see what the Wachowskis and Tykwer doing with such complex source material.
