Hugh Grant: Love child revelations reveal a man who needs to grow up

THE VANCOUVER SUN
BY WILLIAM LANGLEY, LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH

hugh grant

Ten long years have passed since Hugh Grant announced his retirement from the movie business.

“This is the last film I will ever do,” he promised the fans at the London premiere of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. “I’ve completely lost interest. I was never a very committed actor. Now I can just stop.”

Like a lot of what 53-year-old Grant says, this turned out to be something less than the gospel truth, and his latest effort, The Reluctant Professor, yet another romantic comedy, is due to reach our screens shortly.

Admittedly, things have changed in the old boy’s life, and with three “love children” to support, he perhaps needs to keep the bumbling, cod-roue screen shtick going for a little longer.Grant’s off-set romances are clearly something else. Two years ago, it emerged that he had sired a daughter, Tabitha, whom he chivalrously characterized as the product of a “fleeting affair” with little-known Chinese actress Tinglan Hong. Soon the pair were fleeting again, and in February last year, Grant announced that they had produced a son, Felix Chang.

But before the second baby came along, the actor had switched his attentions to thirtysomething Swedish TV producer, Anna Eberstein, who, it was revealed last week, bore him a son in September 2012.

Both women and their children now live in expensive West London properties, although Grant, who apparently picks up the bills, doesn’t live with either of them. It is possible that he doesn’t want to show favouritism, but equally likely, given his lengthy record of embroilment-avoidance, that he prefers doing his daddying from a distance.

This seems puzzling. Born into a close, secure family, Grant has frequently spoken of his longing to have children.

“Much as I adore myself”, he once told Vogue magazine, “I’m quite keen to have someone else to care about”.

Ruminative by nature, much of his ruminating has been about his inability to find love or permanence, with the result that his life — now in deep middle age — is “boring to the point of embarrassment”.

Or the point of self-parody. Yet, however gladly he sends himself up, it is hard to escape the suspicion that Britain’s most bankable actor is an authentically troubled soul.

“He is like a complete cynic, self-tortured and dark,” says Drew Barrymore, who starred with him in Music and Lyrics, yet another romcom. “You’d go into his trailer and he’d be sitting there on the couch, chopping salad alone, an angry Englishman.”

In December 2012, Grant was castigated by the US talk show host Jon Stewart, who described him as “a big pain in the ass” and his “least favourite guest of all time”.

He doesn’t take issue with these judgments, yet there’s no doubt of his high intelligence or his ability to charm and entertain in the broader sense. As frontman for Hacked Off, the group lobbying for stricter press controls, he has shown a politician’s flair and an undeniable measure of personal courage.

What should be an irresistible package unravels with the rackety nature of his personal life and the clod-footedness with which he conducts himself. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to this Oxford-educated dreamboat that it might one day be painful for his daughter to know that he saw her as the by-product of a fling, or for Felix to learn that, by the time he was born, his father had impregnated someone else.

It isn’t that Grant is uncaring — he has made generous provision for these children and their mothers — but that his behaviour suggests an inbuilt deficiency of something he has long aspired to: class.

As a young man, Hugh John Mungo Grant was keenly aware that there was a richer, more refined world waiting to be discovered. A New College contemporary recalls him dressing in a tweed jacket to hold traditional tea parties where egg-and-cress and cucumber sandwiches and Earl Grey tea were served on college crockery. “Here were all the OEs [Old Etonians] pretending that they hadn’t been to Eton, because, of course, it wasn’t quite the slightest bit cool. And here was Hugh, acting as though he had been there. It was all pretty confusing.”

Toby Stephens - Toby Stephens Wins Rave Reviews For Tackling His Father's West End Role 04 July 2013 (CONTACT MUSIC)

British actor Toby Stephens has won praise from theatre critics for his role in a West End revival of a play which once starred his famous parents Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens.

Stephens' mother and father won rave reviews for their portrayal of sparring ex-lovers in a 1972 London production of Noel Coward's Private Lives, and now their son has followed in their footsteps by scoring his own glowing write-ups.

The Die Another Day star plays the role his father tackled more than 40 years ago in the new production with Anna Chancellor, which opened at London's Gielgud Theatre on Wednesday night (03Jul13), and Henry Hitchings of the London Evening Standard branded the show a "deliciously fresh revival".

Hitchings calls Stephens a "superb comic actor" and compares him to Chancellor's Four Weddings and a Funeral co-star Hugh Grant, adding, "I can't recall having seen him give a better performance than he does here."

Charles Spencer of Britain's Daily Telegraph gave the play five stars out of five, writing, "This is a gloriously entertaining evening, opulently designed... and offering two hours of comic bliss", while The Independent's Paul Taylor concludes by calling the new production of Private Lives "the best in a decade".

Kristin Scott Thomas gets nasty at Cannes (USA TODAY)

CANNES, France — Kristin Scott Thomas is known for her cool, aristocratic demeanor in classic films such as 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral and 1996's The English Patient.

But now it's time for her to get nasty. Real nasty.

The English-French actress, who turns 53 on Friday, takes on a very different role as the bloodthirsty head of a drug-running family hell-bent on revenge in Only God Forgives (out July 19). The film from writer-director Nicolas Winding Refn saw its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

Thomas will shock — and delight — her fans as she chews her way through anyone in her path onscreen while inhaling long, thin cigarettes. The role has thrust her into the spotlight, a place usually reserved for her marquee co-star Ryan Gosling, who was pulled out of the festival because of last-minute film commitments.

"She had no problem turning on the bitch switch," said Refn as the film was introduced to the international press.

Hugh Grant filming in Binghamton (PRESS CONNECTS)

Binghamton resident Brian Nayor ran into British actor Hugh Grant downtown and had this photo taken. / Photo provided

Staff report

BINGHAMTON — Brian Nayor was about to leave the Gas Lamp Gym Sunday when Hugh Grant walked by.

So the Binghamton resident, who co-owns and operates the Court Street gym, did what any curious person would do: he slung his bag over his shoulder and walked briskly down the street, catching up with the British actor near the intersection of Court and State streets.

“I looked at him and said, ‘Hi,’ and he said, ‘Hi,’” Nayor recounted Monday. “Then I said, ‘Pardon me for asking, but are you Hugh Grant?’ Then he said, in a very unmistakeable British accent, ‘Yes, yes I am.’”

Grant himself wasn’t the only indication that Binghamton made it into the big-time, cinematically speaking. The film crew was a big tip-off too, said Nayor, an actor with Binghamton’s KNOW Theatre who got Grant to pose with him for a picture.

“He was warm and cordial,” Nayor said of Grant. “He seemed like a mellowed-out guy.”

The star was spotted in other parts of the city, too: specifically the Number 5 restaurant for Sunday dinner, said owner Jim McCoy.

“It’s the only place I would go,” McCoy quipped.

Grant is filming a comedy, currently untitled, under the direction of Binghamton University graduate Marc Lawrence, according to the movie database site IMDb. Marisa Tomei, whose credits include “My Cousin Vinny” and “The Wrestler,” is the co-star of the unnamed project.

ANNA CHANCELLOR: "HUGH GRANT? SO WITTY, SO NAUGHTY" (THE BIG ISSUE)

JASPER HAMILL FEB 13, 2013

"Duckface" from Four Weddings and a Funeral

Four Weddings And A Funeral star Anna Chancellor on how she was wildly misinformed about the seminal British film

It’s one of the many uber-twee British films that present a glossily idealised view of upper-class English life.

But Four Weddings And A Funeral star Anna Chancellor has revealed that she was promised a much more filthy role in the seminal comedy. She also hinted at the “naughty” side of her co-star Hugh Grant.

She told the Big Issue: “My first real acting job was probably Four Weddings And A Funeral. Someone told me they were making a film about lots of fucking in the back of horseboxes and I’d be perfect for it.

LONDON (Reuters) - British actor Hugh Grant has accepted a "substantial sum" after settling his phone-hacking damages action against the publishers of the now defunct News of the World, his lawyer said on Friday.

The actor, a strident critic of Britain's tabloid newspaper culture, will donate the money to 'Hacked Off', a pressure group that helped bring about a public inquiry into press practices.

"Hugh Grant has today settled his claims for damages and other legal remedies arising out of the unlawful activities of News of the World journalists and others over a number of years," the actor's lawyer said in a statement.

Hugh Grant apologizes for Daily Show behavior: 'Jon Stewart correct to give me kicking'

By Adam Edelman / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Jon Stewart is no fan of Hugh Grant, who was reportedly upset that a film clip provided for his "Daily Show" appearance was below par. Stewart's retort: "Well, then make a better f------ movie." Oops.

One week after funnyman Jon Stewart slammed Hugh Grant as a "big pain in the a--," the snarky British actor took full responsibility for his 2009 Daily Show transgressions, admitting he deserved the public spanking from Stewart.

"Turns out my inner crab got the better of me with TV producer in 09," Grant, who appeared in this year's fantasy blockbuster Cloud Atlas, tweeted Friday. "Unforgivable. J Stewart correct to give me kicking," he wrote.

During an on-stage discussion last week with fellow comedian Stephen Colbert, Stewart said Grant displayed diva-like qualities backstage when the romantic-comedy actor appeared on The Daily Show in 2009.

Hugh Grant Poses For Insanely Awkward Photo With Breastfeeding Mom (HOLLYWIRE)

While Hugh visited a bar in Dover, England, the bar owner's wife Natalie reached out for a photo-op with him and didn't seem to care that she was breastfeeding at the time! Despite that minor detail, Hugh was a good sport and uncomfortably posed for what has to be the world's most awkward fan photo.

about 24 hours ago by McCarton

Natalie said that Hugh approached initially because while she was breast feeding, she accidentally flashed him! "Hugh came straight over to me on the sofa and said, 'Hello, how are you?' she said. "I was blushing furiously and when he held out his hand, he suddenly realized I was breast feeding. But because it was Hugh, I felt I had to take it, but as I moved my arm the baby slipped down. He said, "Oh, I'm so sorry" and moved back and I only stroked his hand."

Awk. Ward. Seriously, put the baby down for, like, 30 seconds if you want to take a photo with someone.

Hugh Grant Scores Apology From Rupert Murdoch Over Tweet Claiming He Abandoned "Love Child" by Gina Serpe (E!)

Has the World stopped spinning? Oh wait, yes it has.

Well, that would go some way towards explaining why Rupert Murdoch, of all people, deigned to (brace yourselves) make a public apology to the tabloid-scorned Hugh Grant.

But not, as it happens, for the gross invasion of privacy that was the tabloid phone-hacking scandal.

Nope. Instead, the conservative News Corp. media mogul took to Twitter this week and offered up an apology on a far more personal matter: namely, Hugh's parenting skills.

"Hugh Grant states that he is deeply involved in his daughter's life—I accept that, regret tweet on the matter. Apologies to both parents," the 81-year-old wrote yesterday.

The uncharacteristic about-face came just a day after he first called out the British rom-com vet in an offense-causing tweet that came courtesy of an exchange with another Twitter user earlier this week.

Speaking on a video supporting gay marriage, the 52-year-old actor said: 'I’m not a massive believer in marriage, I think my own biography is testament to that. But I think love is the same for everyone.'

The father of one, whose exes include actress Elizabeth Hurley and socialite Jemima Khan, backed the Out4Marriage campaign adding: 'I do think that everyone should have the same rights. If you want to get married, whether you're gay, straight, transgender (or) whatever, you should definitely be allowed to do that.'

Also backing the cause is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who once said they would refrain from tying the knot until gay marriage was legal across the US.

The disastrous duet of Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley (EVENING STANDARD)

Things have not always run smoothly in the glittering career of Hugh Grant. He tells an Oxford literary magazine about five embarrassing failures in his life.

When he was 12 he tried to throw a cricket ball back to the bowler at Lord’s but it flew backwards into the crowd. Later he wore his mother’s red anorak when he was a teenage motorbike messenger and no one would talk to him. He once failed in a TV adaptation of a Barbara Cartland novel because he had a squeaky voice, and in a Spanish- made film about Lord Byron his hair perm was too curly.

But the worst disaster occurred when Liz Hurley made him sing a duet with her, as Frank and Nancy Sinatra, while they were on holiday in the South of France.

“A band was playing to a large crowd,” he tells the autumn edition of Arete, a learned quarterly for Oxford graduates such as himself. “It’s hard now to imagine how I allowed myself to be persuaded by my then girlfriend to go up with her and sing Something Stupid. In harmony. I might have been fractionally drunk but I remember a moment of sudden and terrifying sobriety, followed by blind panic, and then us starting so far off key that the band had to stop and start again.

“This happened three times. In the end we were told to leave the stage. When we got back to our friends we found they’d fled.”

Arete’s editor Craig Raine writes  encouragingly: “Hugh recently starred in the Leveson Inquiry into phone hacking with great success.”
