Um…if Meryl Streep tells you to do something, you DO IT! That’s why we’re shocked to hear that when the 18-time Oscar nominee suggested that she and the entire cast of August: Osage County live together in an Oklahoma condo complex during filming, there was one famous hold-out!

Benedict Cumberbatch!

According to the awards season queen, the Sherlock actor decided he’d rather stay in a hotel than slum it with her, Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, and Ewan McGregor!

Cumberbatch iPhone selfie landed him Streep movie

Benedict Cumberbatch bagged a part in his latest movie August: Osage County after wooing the film’s director with a self-shot video.

John Wells – best known for his work on US TV series ER and The West Wing – had not heard of the Sherlock star until he received the amateur footage.

He said: ‘I have to confess I didn’t know Benedict’s work at all. He sent in a video – recorded on an iPhone – and he must have filmed it himself because you could see that it was being held at arm’s length, like a selfie.

‘We were sent the clip by his agent and I was really taken with his talent. It was a beautiful audition.

‘We auditioned several people after that but none of them had the warmth and humanity of Benedict in the part,’ he added to The Sun.

Benedict stars alongside the likes of Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper and Sam Shepard in the dark Oklahoma-set drama.

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'August: Osage County' Ensemble to Be Honored at Hollywood Film Awards (Exclusive)

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
8:00 AM PDT 10/7/2013 by Scott Feinberg

The cast of August: Osage County will receive the Hollywood Ensemble Acting Award at the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards, the first awards show of the 2013 season, on Oct. 21 at the Beverly Hilton, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

John Wells' big-screen adaptation of Tracy Letts' Tony- and Puliter Prize-winning play features a star-studded cast, including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Julianne Nicholson, Juliette Lewis, Dermot Mulroney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Margo Martindale, Abigail Breslin, Sam Shepard and Misty Upham.

The film, which premiered at September's Toronto International Film Festival and will be released nationwide by The Weinstein Co. on Christmas Day, is a dramedy about intra-family chaos. It revolves around three sisters (Roberts, Lewis and Nicholson) and their significant others (McGregor, Mulroney and Cumberbatch), plus other relatives (Martindale, Cooper and Breslin), who reunite at the Oklahoma home of their mother (Streep) following the death of their father (Shepard), whereupon they air their grievances about how others present at the gathering have caused their lives to become terribly screwed up in one way or another. August's producers include George Clooney and Grant Heslov, who also produced last year's best picture Oscar winner, Argo.

With slightly more than one month left to go, we're getting a good idea of the big names slated to hit this year's Toronto film festival.

It's always a very fun and very star-studded week. The actor with what appear to be the most films this year is Benedict Cumberbatch.

The fun runs Sept. 5-15, and here's a few of the most high-profile films set to screen there:

The Fifth Estate, about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (starring Cumberbatch).

August: Osage County, about the most twisted family you've seen in years (starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin, Sam Shepard and Chris Cooper).

Benedict Cumberbatch: Filming of "August: Osage County" has Oklahomans on lookout for movie stars TULSA WORLD

By MICHAEL SMITH World Scene Writer Published: 9/29/2012  2:27 AM Last Modified: 9/29/2012  5:31 AM

PAWHUSKA - The bus pulls up to a curb in downtown Pawhuska. A slumped-shouldered man emerges, pulling on his suit jacket and approaching his father. The man is upset and apologetic ("I set the alarm," he tells his father). Their conversation concludes when the man breaks into tears and hugs his consoling father.

They repeat these actions for an hour, and after lunch, these men begin talking, crying and embracing many more times.

The man is Benedict Cumberbatch, an English actor best known for portraying a modern-day "Sherlock" on PBS. The father is Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper, one of Hollywood's best-known character actors in movies including "American Beauty" and "The Muppets."

The production is "August: Osage County," and on Friday the movie - based on Tulsa native Tracy Letts' award-winning play - filmed in Pawhuska, the county seat of Osage County. The past week has featured outdoor photography of multiple scenes, offering residents of Osage and Washington counties an occasional peek at the making of this major motion picture.

Soon the filming will move exclusively to a large home in Osage County near the Kansas state line for filming through November. The movie about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family also stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis and Ewan McGregor, among others, but they were not involved in Friday's film shoot.

The "Sherlock" star will join Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in TWC's adaptation of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the Emmy-nominated actor who stars on the BBC America’s Sherlock, is in negotiations to join the cast of August: Osage County, the Weinstein Co.’s adaptation of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play.
