As 'Downton Abbey' heads into season five, it maintains its magic touch

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
BY DAVID HINCKLEY

Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith Crawley on “Downton Abbey”; the plotline for Season 5 will spend a fair amount of time with Lady Edith.
NICK BRIGGS
Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith Crawley on “Downton Abbey”; the plotline for Season 5 will spend a fair amount of time with Lady Edith.

The magic touch that “Downton Abbey” has wielded from its opening scene is the kind of gift that, like a lavish British country estate, you have to be born with.

From the moment the Titanic went down right up to the show’s fifth season, which launches on PBS at 9 p.m. Sunday, that touch has not diminished.

Take it from Rob James-Collier, who plays Thomas Barrow, better known to fans of “Downton Abbey” as Evil Thomas, the downstairs servant whose own nefarious touch routinely turns gold into sawdust.

James-Collier earned two university degrees and spent several years in marketing before deciding at age 28 to become an actor.

“I discovered I hated marketing,” he says. So he took some acting classes and the kind of small roles aspiring actors always take before landing Barrow.

“Now I love what I do,” he says. But sure, he allows, all that marketing experience can at times still hover about.

Like it did this summer, when “Downton Abbey” was rocked by plastic water bottle scandal.

Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) posed for a Season 5 publicity picture in front of a stately mantelpiece on which was nestled a plastic water bottle.

Plastic water bottles had so not been invented in 1925.

The scandal abated when the cast quickly shot a followup picture acknowledging and joking about their grievous error.

But scandal it was, and James-Collier says it was nothing short of brilliant.

“I have no idea if it was accidental or deliberate,” he says. “But my immediate reaction, from my marketing training, is that this did everything a good marketing campaign is supposed to do.

“It got that picture onto front pages all over the world. It got people talking about the show when it wasn’t even on the air.

“If I were running the campaign, it’s exactly what I would have done.”

Wherever The Case of the Mysterious Water Bottle originated, it’s hardly the only time “Downton” has emerged shining, or scored in a way that PBS shows just don’t score.

Over the last week and a half, more than a millions viewers have watched a nine-minute video in which George Clooney joins the “Downton” cast to promote Britain’s Text Santa charity.

Best of all, for PBS, “Downton” has become the most popular drama in PBS history. The fourth season U.S. premiere drew 10.2 million viewers, more than most commercial broadcast network shows, and while the fifth season audience dropped a bit when it ran this past fall in the U.K., it was still at the top of the pack.

It was primarily “Downton,” PBS officials will happily admit, that lifted PBS from being the 13th most-watched TV network a couple of years ago to the fifth most-watched last year.

So PBS itself, like the show’s fans, wish it could run forever.

That doesn’t happen, though, and executive producer Gareth Naeme remains coy about just how long it will actually run.

“It will end somewhere between Season 5 and Season 10,” he said in early December.

5 things we learned from 'Downton Abbey' cast's royal visit

TODAY
RANDI DAWN
December 8, 2014

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Here are five key things we learned:

George Clooney is not appearing in the Christmas special/season finale
OK, we kind of suspected, but it was confirmed by Bonneville that Clooney merely made a tiny promotional appearance in support of a charity. "He's in a sketch for a fundraiser," said the actor. Joked Nicol, "We didn't all get to meet him, and we're not bitter."

The truth behind that anachronistic water bottle
Remember that "Downton Abbey" publicity photo that included an unexpected cameo by a water bottle? Not intentional, but it worked out nicely: "That photo was cropped originally, and then suddenly it was uncropped," said Bonneville. "[It made us able] to get behind the charity Water Aid in the UK."

Isis the dog's fate is not tied to any current headlines
Rumor had it that Grantham's dog Isis (the one Thomas once locked in a shed overnight!) was going to be killed off because the terror group ISIS had started using the name of the legendary Egyptian goddess. "Any story line involving the dog has nothing to do with horrible international events," said Bonneville.

George Clooney to star in Downton Abbey

THE AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S WEEKLY
AEST 10:29, TUE DEC 2 2014

George Clooney is trying to enter British aristocracy after marrying his well-to-do wife Amal Alamuddin – well in the fictional sense at least.

George is due to make a cameo on British television series Downton Abbey alongside his Monuments Men co-star, Hugh Bonneville.

Recent pictures have emerged of 53-year-old Clooney with Bonneville's Robert Crawley on the set of the period drama looking every bit the 1930’s English gent with smoothed-back hair, a grey wide-lapelled suit and dapper tie.

The Gravity actor is rumoured to be appearing in a one-off sketch appearance for a Downton Abbey special in support of British charity Text Santa – a fundraiser for UK charities during the festive season.

The Clooney cameo is scheduled to air on December 19 and will reportedly see the Hollywood-heartthrob play a wedding guest appearing in scenes with Hugh as well as Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary Crawley, Elizabeth McGovern's Countess of Grantham and Laura Carmichael's Lady Edith.

Bonneville told Radio Times earlier this year that it was good to have his pal on set.

"He was incredibly generous with his time and his talent," Bonneville said.

Adding: "He was great – he was a good laugh and sprinkled some sort of magic dust over our experience."

George Clooney Tries to Kiss Maggie Smith in 'Downton Abbey' Charity Special

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
6:57 AM PST 09/22/2014 by Alex Ritman

Just over a week after it was revealed that George Clooney would be appearing in a Downton Abbey short film for charity, the show's Laura Carmichael has spilled the beans on the star's appearance and a particularly amusing scene involving Maggie Smith.

Speaking on U.K. breakfast television, the actress revealed that Clooney attempts to land a smacker on Smith. "There's a very brilliant moment with Maggie and George — I don't know if I want to give away any more than that really — but George wants a kiss, and Maggie ends up on the floor. It's wonderful," she told ITV's This Morning.

George Clooney 'to make appearance in Downton Abbey'

THE GUARDIAN
Martin Williams
theguardian.com, Wednesday 10 September 2014 19.59 EDT

George Clooney is to star in the UK television series Downton Abbey, it has been reported. The actor will play an American character who is a guest at a wedding in the country estate.

The show, which will be broadcast at Christmas, was written to raise money for a charity fundraiser, called Text Santa for ITV. An ITV spokesperson said Clooney would appear in a sketch, but would not act in a full Christmas episode.

The Hollywood star has already filmed the scenes but a spokesperson for the period drama refused to give away any further details. However, it was reported that Clooney was set to appear alongside Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery.

Clooney is reportedly a huge fan of Downton Abbey and is good friends with Bonneville, who plays Lord Robert Crawley. The pair became close after working on the war film, Monuments Men, together.

Earlier this year, it was also claimed that Clooney and his fiancée, Amal Alamuddin, considered choosing Highclere Castle, the Hampshire estate where Downton Abbey is filmed, as the venue for their upcoming wedding.

However, it has been suggested that this was an elaborate cover story – invented after he was spotted at the castle – in order to keep his Downton appearance a secret.

Sources told the Sun: "All the plans have been shrouded in secrecy because George was determined for his role not to leak out.

Suave: Colin Firth cut a figure much younger than his 53 years when he stepped out in New York City on Wednesday

He's often been talked about as the English version of George Clooney.

But Colin Firth deserves praise in his own right for his look after he cut a figure much younger than his 53 years when he stepped out in the US actor's home nation on Wednesday.

The Railway Man actor looked extremely dapper in a black suit as he arrived at the Trump hotel in New York City with his assistant in tow.

Colin added a crisp white shirt and a dark blue tie to his dignified look, which was completed by a pair of shiny black shoes.

The star wore his trademark thick-rimmed spectacles as he strolled along the street looking very relaxed with his hands in his pockets.

Colin appeared to be in great spirits as he giggled away while being pictured which showed off his pearly white teeth.

Michael Fassbender: I'm no pin-up

CONTACT MUSIC
by Bang Showbiz | 03 January 2014

Michael Fassbender doesn't see himself as a sex symbol.

The '12 Years A Slave' star - who claimed he was flattered to be named the eighth sexiest male movie star worldwide in a poll last year - doesn't believe he's attractive but tries not to think about how much female attention he gets because it would turn him vain.

He said: ''I don't see myself as a pin-up. I don't dwell on it. That sort of information isn't good for my own head.''

The 36-year-old actor hit the headlines in 2011 for his revealing role in 'Shame', which saw him strip off and show his manhood, and even George Clooney thanked him on stage at the Golden Globe Awards in 2012 for taking over the ''frontal-nudity responsibility''.

However, Fassbender sometimes wishes the jokes and sexual remarks about the size of his genitals would stop, but he is adamant he would take on a nudity role again if he was asked.

Finally, George Clooney and Benedict Cumberbatch Are in the Same Room - Jaguar Britannia Awards (set to air Sunday on BBC America)

November 10, 2013

Saturday night's BAFTA LA Jaguar Britannia Awards were a veritable who's who of Hollywood's A-list. Stars like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Salma Hayek, Sean Penn, and Benedict Cumberbatch all descended on the Beverly Hills Hotel for the event, which celebrates individuals and companies that are dedicated to advancing the entertainment arts.

George, who was also on hand for the screening of his latest project August: Osage County earlier in the day, mingled inside with Julia, Salma, and Sean before accepting his Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film, while Benedict took the stage as the recipient of the British artist of the year honor. Other award winners included director Kathryn Bigelow, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Mandela star Idris Elba, who received the Britannia humanitarian award for his work with The Prince's Trust — the charity was founded by Prince Charles and helps disadvantaged youth in the UK.

Benedict Cumberbatch to be named British Artist of the Year at Britannia Awards

2013 has undoubtedly been Benedict Cumberbatch's breakout year. Bolstered by his acclaimed performance in BBC's Sherlock, the last twelve months have seen him catapulted from respected television actor to bonafide movie star, culminating in a role in The Hobbit trilogy and his appearance as Khan in JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness.

In the coming months he will crop up in three films – The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County – all of which are already generating early Oscars chatter.

But while his name is being mentioned in anticipation of 2014's wave of awards, Cumberbatch can already add a gong to his collection after being named British Artist of the Year ahead of November's Britannia Awards.

Cumberbatch will receive his honour at the Beverly Hilton ceremony, joining fellow recipients George Clooney, who will be awarded the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, Kathryn Bigelow, receiving the John Schlesinger prize for Excellence in Directing, and Ben Kingsley who has been chosen for the Albert R Broccoli award.

Hugh Bonneville: Matt Damon is Front and Center in First 'Monuments Men' Poster

The Monuments Men poster

ROPE OF SILICON
BY: BRAD BREVET PUBLISHED: SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH 2013 AT 10:30 AM

The film is based on the true story of an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements.

Hugh Bonneville takes wife Lulu Evans on set as he films The Monuments Men... and introduces her to silver fox George Clooney By EMILY SHERIDAN and LOUISE SAUNDERS (MAIL ON LINE)

Leading lady: Hugh Bonneville was joined on the set of The Monuments Men by wife Lulu Evans on Monday afternoon

She was playing the dutiful wife by going to visit her husband, Hugh Bonneville, on the set of his latest movie The Monuments Men.

And Lulu Evans was no doubt thrilled to find herself in the company of none other than Hollywood A-lister George Clooney as the group got to work on location at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

Hugh, 49, was kitted out in full army regalia as his leading lady arrived on set on Monday afternoon.

The pair seemed to be enjoying themselves as they enjoyed an arm-in-arm stroll around the picturesque countryside location while soaking up the warm afternoon sun.

But it wasn't long before something caught Lulu's eye, and the couple immediately made their way over to join silver fox Clooney in the director's chair.

The Hollywood hunk appeared to be getting on like a house on fire with Bonneville's wife, with the group chatting away together amiably as they relaxed in the sunshine.

‘Downton Abbey’ season 4: Hugh Bonneville back after filming with George Clooney (CARTER)

While the entire cast of “Downton Abbey” is understandably bound to secrecy until season 4 premieres on ITV this fall, we are at least hearing some interesting news now that has to do with the world of scheduling. When you have a show with so big a cast, this can be a nightmare, especially when there are people looking to take on as many different projects as possible.

However, what we are hearing now is that the show is certainly as accommodating as possible, and even arranged the schedule of star Hugh Bonneville so he could spend a week filming in a different part of Europe. The actor has a part in the film “The Monuments Men” written and directed by George Clooney, which has been filming in Germany ever since the end of the Academy Awards. In a new post on Twitter, Bonneville’s on-screen wife Elizabeth McGovern confirmed that the actor had just returned to start up “Downton Abbey” work following his time away:

Cary Grant, the one and only By Laurie Bennett March 21, 2013 at 6:05am (MUCKETY)

The New York Times has proclaimed Justin Timberlake the new Cary Grant, which must make George Clooney the old Cary Grant.

The premise for the Times verdict is Timberlake’s suave new look, a tailored contrast to his earlier boy-band bagginess.

Grant, Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite actor, set a standard, sartorial and otherwise, for later generations of actors.

The comparison is made with so many handsome, witty leading men that it has become a cliche.

Hugh Grant (no relation) runs a close second to Clooney as the chosen successor. The Daily Mail pointed out: “Both were born in England, have similar Byronic sex appeal, look good in suits, and excel at playing well-heeled characters.”

Others who have been promoted as the next Archibald Alexander Leach include Bruce Willis (when he had hair), Pierce Brosnan (before he serenaded Meryl), Mark Wahlberg, Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashton Kutcher and Ewan McGregor. (The McGregor analogy makes no sense whatsoever. He obviously is the next Christopher Plummer.)

Vanity Fair noted this trend almost a decade ago, identifying Frankie Muniz, TV’s Malcolm in the middle, as the most inexplicable nominee. When told that a critic had described him as “the Cary Grant of kid stars,” Muniz replied, “That’s cool… but I don’t know who Cary Grant is.”

Gary Oldman, Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren, MOVIE, THE MOVIE (CINEMA BLEND)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=w3NwB9PLxss#!

  Author: Katey Rich

There are a whole lot of silly Oscar night traditions to choose from, from the opening song-and-dance to the Best Song performances to the "shocked" speeches from people everyone knew would be winning. But I'd like to add a pretty recent tradition to the list: Jimmy Kimmel's "Movie the Movie." The ABC late night host will have the prime post-Oscar slot again this year, and will be back with the parody that set the Internet on fire after last year's Oscars. Except, in the grand tradition of movies, it's not just a new parody: it's a sequel. Welcome to Movie The Movie: 2V.

Downton Tragedy: Will Dan Stevens Be George Clooney or David Caruso? (SHOWBIZ 411)

02/18/13 2:32amRoger Friedman

WITH SPOILERS: By now, most fans of “Downton Abbey” in the US know what the Brits learned on Christmas Day: Matthew Crawley is most sincerely dead. After seeing his newborn son, Matthew died in automobile accident, on camera, blood pouring out of his head. Series creator Julian Fellowes and the producers took out their most decided unhappiness about actor Dan Stevens leaving them after three seasons. Stevens as much as told us this at the Broadway premiere of “The Heiress” when his rude publicist almost tackled me to get him away.

Stevens had been giving interviews saying he’d brought his family to America and was looking forward to sticking around. He’s walked away from the best show on television on two continents and massive popularity. So what now? Will he follow in the footsteps of George Clooney and make a successful transition to movies? Or will Stevens become the British equivalent of David Caruso, who spurned “NYPD Blue” years ago for a movie career that fizzled immediately? It’s hard to say. Remember Clooney stuck with “ER” for several years before making that full time jump. It was Caruso who left “NYPD Blue” right away.

Stevens might very well have stuck it out for two more seasons of “Downton.” After all, the show only produces a handful of episodes per season–it’s not like he was required to make 22 episodes. And he squandered the good will of fans he was courting for future work.

Mary (Michelle Dockery) won’t be alone for along. Fellowes is already casting for a new love interest, not a husband, but an intermediary fellow. And it wouldn’ surprise anyone if the fifth season endgame brings Mary together with her brother-in-law, Tom Branson, the former chauffeur.
