It was the story of a working-class underdog in 1980s Bristol, but the star-studded cast of 2006 film Starter for 10 have become huge global stars in their own right.

The film followed student Brian Jackson (James McAvoy) as he embarked on his first year at Bristol University, battling cliched opposition from peers as he attempted to get on the popular TV show, University Challenge.

So, let's see which familiar faces got their Starter for 10 correct with the film:

James McAvoy

Now known for his role as a young Professor Charles Xavier in the X Men series, Scottish actor McAvoy was already familiar to fans of Paul Abbott's television show, Shameless, in which he co-starred with his now-wife, Anne-Marie Duff.

He's also impressed in movies such as The Last King of Scotland, Atonement and the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Filth.

Benedict Cumberbatch

He's our Sherlock Holmes here in Wales thanks to Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' re-imagining of Arthur Conan Doyle's character for the BBC hit, but back in 2006 (or 1985) Cumbers was the snotty nosed team-mate of McAvoy's Brian.

Since 2010 he's been filming Sherlock in and around Wales, but he's also gained notoriety from Hollywood thanks to roles in The Imitation Game, Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy, 12 Years a Slave and as the voice of dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Any fan of comedy would recognise Gatiss as one of the League of Gentlemen, but it wasn't until Sherlock he became a household name.

In the 1980s movie he portrayed University Challenge host Bamber Gascoigne who puts the main characters to the test on national TV.

In Sherlock (which he co-created) Gatiss also plays the titular character's brother, Mycroft.

Gatiss also has a small recurring role in Game of Thrones.

Does Benedict Cumberbatch have a new girlfriend? The rumors continue!

Last week, Showbiz Spy reported that the “Sherlock” star was “smitten” with a new woman.

“Benedict has a girlfriend,” a source said. “He’s keeping it very hush-hush. But it’s safe to say he’s smitten!”

“He’s been seeing the lady in question for the past few months. She isn’t in the public eye, and has quite a serious career, so is keen to remain anonymous for as long as possible,” the source said.

Now, Showbiz Spy reports that Benedict, 37, is “furious” about the rumors and thinks that someone in his inner circle leaked the news.

“Ben knows people are interested in his personal life,” a source said. “And he’s happy to discuss certain aspects of it with the media.

“But he was furious when he found out that someone from his inner circle had been gossiping to the press. He thinks he knows who it was, and is trying to plug the leaks!”

Behind the shoot: Tertius Bune on Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve

It's photographer Tertius Bune's longstanding friendship with British Actor, Benedict Cumberbatch that was the catalyst behind their seminal photoshoot for the latest issue of GQ Style. Shot on Los Angeles' iconic Mulholland Drive we see Cumberbatch and his Star Trek Into Darkness  co-star Alice Eve transformed into a modern day Bonnie and Clyde.

His relationship with Cumberbatch is demonstrated through a truly unique and unfiltered way of representing his friend. "I do believe I can cast him in a light that shows him as he ultimately is," Bune says of the actor. "I'm talking about his versatility as a human being." In fact the shoot is testament to the spontaneity that comes from real friendship - an invitation to stay for a few days in LA provided all the inspiration Bune needed. "It was such an amazing time…but most importantly to witness this truly awesome moment in Benedict's career. Such a gift to be able to share that with him".

Here Bune talks to GQ Style about what it is like to photograph your best friend and the inspiration behind his take on the American Road Trip…

GQ Style: Tell us about your shoot with Benedict Cumberbatch. Where were you?

Tertius Bune: I had come to L.A. for a couple of shoots whilst Benedict was promoting a movie. Benedict invited me to stay with him at his house in Venice Beach. I met Alice the first night I arrived while at an Oscars party. The three of us just clicked. As we all hung out in the following weeks, I thought to myself; here they are after over ten years from first meeting and working together, both of their careers had really picked up steam in the prior few years. This is where the inspiration for the story came. Benedict and Alice both seemed to be grabbing or if you will, "stealing" all these roles in Hollywood. The story was shot on Mulholland Drive, a road in L.A. that has a certain outlaw quality and history to it.

We understand that you and Benedict are old friends - is there a particular trick to shooting someone you know so well?

Yes, Benedict and I have known each other since I was six and he eight years old. There is no particular trick to photographing someone you've known your whole life but I do believe I can cast him in a different light due to the fact that I know him as well as I do.  This shoot in particular I wanted to show his edgier side. Which is not something I contrived, he has it. I see the media painting Benedict as the proper British boy (yes this is part of him), but he has a vast range. And I'm not just talking about acting or character range.

Saturday night's BAFTA LA Jaguar Britannia Awards were a veritable who's who of Hollywood's A-list. Stars like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Salma Hayek, Sean Penn, and Benedict Cumberbatch all descended on the Beverly Hills Hotel for the event, which celebrates individuals and companies that are dedicated to advancing the entertainment arts.

George, who was also on hand for the screening of his latest project August: Osage County earlier in the day, mingled inside with Julia, Salma, and Sean before accepting his Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film, while Benedict took the stage as the recipient of the British artist of the year honor. Other award winners included director Kathryn Bigelow, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Mandela star Idris Elba, who received the Britannia humanitarian award for his work with The Prince's Trust — the charity was founded by Prince Charles and helps disadvantaged youth in the UK.

They both play slightly uptight characters on their respective shows – Sherlock and Downton Abbey.
But it seems in real-life Benedict Cumberbatch and Laura Carmichael are far from boring as they proved when they attended Lady Gaga’s much talked about Roundhouse show in London on Sunday evening.

The actors, who are both the toast of British talent, appeared to really let their hair down as they chatted away at the bar before the Mother Monster took to the stage.

Slipping on a baker boy style cap the famous red-head dressed down in a pair brown trousers with a black zip up cardigan and casual trainers – looking a far cry from the dapper appearances he puts on at events.
Laura meanwhile also looked vastly different to her on stage character Lady Edith – showing off a more relaxed style.

The pretty actress wore a pair of dark blue jeans with a white T-shirt and leather jacket, while her hair was worn loose.

Laura and Benedict clearly get along like a house on fire and they were seen laughing away together as they hung around the bar enjoying a few drinks.

Benedict seemed in a particularly good mood and messed around talking selfies of himself and a friend as Laura stood about laughing.

The Star Trek actor is currently believed to be single. For 12 years, he was in an on-off relationship with actress Olivia Poulet, best known for her role as Tory spin doctor Emma Messinger in BBC sitcom The Thick Of It.



Since the break-up, he has been linked with several high-profile women, including Star Trek co-star Alice Eve and Lord Of The Rings actress Liv Tyler.

Benedict Cumberbatch keeps his personal life quiet, but photos have recently appeared online suggesting that he may be dating either Russian model Katia Elizarova or his “Star Trek” costar Alice Eve.

Cumberbatch, 37, recently officiated a wedding for two gay friends in Ibiza and was spotted with Elizarova, 26.

Now magazine reported that Elizarova is “believed to be his girlfriend” and that the two were seen “smooch[ing]” and “cozying up.”

Fans have also wondered if Cumberbatch is getting close with his “Star Trek” costar Alice Eve, 31. Both stars are purportedly single, and Eve has posted several photos of herself with Cumberbatch on her Instagram page

Fans have speculated about the possibility of a romance in photo comments, but Eve has not addressed them.

“Yes have babies you two! They would be beautiful!” one fan wrote.

Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood, Nolan North.

THE PLOT: We open on a volcanic planet, sometime back in the future, and with the good ship Enterprise hovering nearby, the impulsive, impertinent Captain James Kirk (Pine) and Lieutenant Commander Bones McCoy (Urban) flee the angry natives through a Dr. Seuss landscape as the highly logical Commander Spock (Quinto) tries to cap a volcano that is all set to wipe out this indigenous race. A last-minute rescue - wherein these simple natives witness the Enterprise in full flight - means a swift demotion for Kirk, and a reassignment for Spock. Luckily, there's a mad doctor on the loose, and he seems set on wiping out the entire Starfleet. With the blessing of Admiral Marcus (Weller), the boys are reunited with their crew, as they go after rogue super-agent John Harrison (Cumberbatch), hiding out deep in Kling-On country...

THE VERDICT: Say what you like about the big, fat corporate branding being force-fed to us by the major studios, when it comes to big, fat entertaining franchise movies, dang, it seems to be working. Last week's Iron Man 3 was a giddy blast, and now, along comes the second of the rebooted Star Trek outings - and it might just be one of the year's finest films. J.J. Abrams once again sets his phaser to stun. And he does. Magnificently.

There's hardly time to breathe with In Darkness before you're hit with another thrill-ride, well-crafted quip or that all-important emotional punch - think Skyfall with holograms on. The alien-goes-to-Eton look of Benedict Cumberbatch makes for one delicious villain, whilst Pine, Quinto and the gang settle ever deeper into the roles they seem destined to play. Even the stock-character comedy accents of Yelchin (as Russian Tactical Officer Chekhov) and Pegg (as Scottish engineer Scotty) can't quite derail the sci-fi fantasy fun here. MajQa'.

LONDON, UK -- Benedict Cumberbatch admitted he was brought to tears on the red carpet at the London premiere of “Star Trek Into Darkness,” last week.

The British actor, who joined the “Star Trek” world for its newest installment (playing mysterious bad guy John), revealed that overhearing his co-stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto sing his praises on the press line moved him deeply.

“When I heard them saying nice things on the red carpet… that was the thing that really struck [me] to my core, and it got to a point — it was like a tipping point, I’d say, where I was signing something [and] I heard Zachary saying something very complimentary about me and I started to cry,” Benedict revealed to Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz at the film’s junket over the weekend in London. “I was looking down and signing and this fan said, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s really windy out here, my eyes are stinging

Benedict, the star of PBS Masterpiece series “Sherlock,” said joining the “Star Trek” world (he called it the “Trekkieverse”) has been more rewarding than he could have imagined.

“The thing that really moved me, actually, was the new family that I have in this franchise, who I’m surrounded with. You really are only as good as the people you work with and I couldn’t have wished for a more welcoming and talented bunch of people,” Benedict said. “I was awestruck when I first met them. … [Chris and Zachary] filled those incredibly huge, iconic shoes, so superlatively in [the first film]. I really am in awe — and they’re contemporaries.”

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH:I Accidentally Got A Crush On Benedict Cumberbatch Without Even Seeing Star Trek by Alexis Rhiannon (CRUSHABLE)

Guys, I have a confession to make: I’m not one of those girls who’s followed Benedict Cumberbatch‘s career the way I should have. Approximately twenty million people in my life have recommended that I watch the BBC’s Sherlock, but there are so many other things ahead of it in my Netflix queue that I just get overwhelmed. I get that a ton of people are obsessed with him, and that I probably would be too if I’d ever seen him in anything, but I haven’t and I’m not, so it was looking like I’d have to wait to see him as the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness to really be on board with the Cumberbitches train. OR NOT.

Sometimes, all it takes to fall into a desperate, one-sided crush with someone is watching a few of their interviews, and that’s what happened to me today. First I watched his co-stars Simon Pegg and Alice Eve gush over how amazing he was to work with and how ready he is to settle down. Alice is particularly effusive, saying that she thinks women love him so much because he gives off the vibe of ‘really wanting a family’, to which Simon added, ‘whereas Chris [Pine] wants lots of families.’ Ha, genius. Despite rumors to the contrary, Benedict Cumberbatch's new "Star Trek" villain will not be Khan. That was made quite clear by "Star Trek Into Darkness" actress Alice Eve, as she walked the red carpet for the BAFTAs on Sunday (video embedded).

Succinctly, she said "He's not playing Khan."

Rumors have flown about the identity of Cumberbatch's new villain. There has been little clarity to this point. At the time of this writing, IMDB still lists his character as "Khan (rumored)."

Although it's been revealed that Cumberbatch would be playing John Harrison, it has thought that the name might be a cover. Still, earlier, Simon Pegg (Scotty) said the villain would not be Khan.

James McTeigue, who had been responsible for the direction of V for Vendetta, returns with another picture that is very intriguing for genre fans. This film mixes historical truth with fiction and fantasy.

This kind of treatment of historical figures seems to be evolving into quite a trend, with an upcoming film depicting Abraham Lincoln as a vampire hunter.

The Raven centres around Edgar Allan Poe, the writer whose influence is felt on the horror genre to this very day while countless films have been produced from his books.

At its core The Raven is a classical whodunit in the traditional sense.
