Benedict Cumberbatch: A cracking crew, brilliant baddie, storming script and virtuoso visuals prove that Star Trek knows how... to boldly grow (MAIL ON LINE)

Star Trek Into Darkness finally gives the talented Benedict Cumberbatch the chance to show Hollywood what he can do on the big screen, and, boy, does he seize it with both hands

Star Trek Into Darkness
Cert: 12A,    Time: 2hrs 15min    5/5

It was way back in 1966, some two-thirds of a perfectly decent lifetime ago, that the first series of Star Trek aired, with Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise setting off on what was only ever supposed to be a five-year mission.

So for the franchise still to be capable of producing films as good as Star Trek Into Darkness is hugely impressive.

For this turns out to be the picture when the latest Enterprise line-up – Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr McCoy and Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Uhura – come properly of age.

But the real winner here is Benedict Cumberbatch. Having been garlanded with praise for his performance as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes on British television, it must have been galling to see Robert Downey Jr making the 19th Century version his own in the billion-dollar world of films.

Star Trek Into Darkness finally gives the talented Cumberbatch the chance to show Hollywood what he can do on the big screen, and, boy, does he seize it with both hands.

He’s instantly one of the great British baddies: not just reliant on steely-eyed menace – something that Cumberbatch can probably do in his sleep – but a genuinely intimidating physical presence too.
Now that’s seriously clever acting, in what turns out to be an outstandingly good Star Trek film.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: 'Star Trek Into Darkness': Five Secrets Revealed J.J. Abrams and the cast MTV News' live stream. By Kevin P. Sullivan (@KPSull) (MTV)

MTV First: "Star Trek Into Darkness"

In our exclusive 30-minute interview with the cast of "Star Trek Into Darkness" and director J.J. Abrams, the conversation touched on just about everything under the stars. From Spock's eyebrows to laughing on set, the topics were as vast as the travels of the USS Enterprise.

While it's hard to cover all of the topics touched on during "MTV First: Star Trek Into Darkness" without giving a blow-by-blow, these five takeaways should give you a feel for what went on when MTV News' Josh Horowitz sat down with Abrams and the cast.

A laughing J.J. is a good thing. Even on big adventure movies like "Star Trek Into Darkness," things can get a little silly from time to time on the set, and usually that's okay. Abrams said that he's usually chief among the slap-happy when things break down during filming, but one take on the 2009 "Star Trek" was too much for him. "It was the one time that we had literally been working forever, and it was the last night on the bridge," Abrams said. "Everyone started cracking up, and it was unacceptable."

Benedict Cumberbatch had the best food on set. It's hard joining any group of people who have previously established relationships with each other, and the same went for Benedict Cumberbatch when he was added to the cast. But as the film's villain, Cumberbatch needed to keep some distance. "With me, I guess it played into my hands, being an outsider to the actual team who made the first film," he said. Of course, he was still the new guy, but Cumberbatch quickly learned a way into the hearts of the original cast. "He bought us though," Zoe Saldana said. "He used to share his food with us."

Benedict Cumberbatch: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Review (5/5)

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (USA/12A/132mins)
Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood, Nolan North.

THE PLOT: We open on a volcanic planet, sometime back in the future, and with the good ship Enterprise hovering nearby, the impulsive, impertinent Captain James Kirk (Pine) and Lieutenant Commander Bones McCoy (Urban) flee the angry natives through a Dr. Seuss landscape as the highly logical Commander Spock (Quinto) tries to cap a volcano that is all set to wipe out this indigenous race. A last-minute rescue - wherein these simple natives witness the Enterprise in full flight - means a swift demotion for Kirk, and a reassignment for Spock. Luckily, there's a mad doctor on the loose, and he seems set on wiping out the entire Starfleet. With the blessing of Admiral Marcus (Weller), the boys are reunited with their crew, as they go after rogue super-agent John Harrison (Cumberbatch), hiding out deep in Kling-On country...

THE VERDICT: Say what you like about the big, fat corporate branding being force-fed to us by the major studios, when it comes to big, fat entertaining franchise movies, dang, it seems to be working. Last week's Iron Man 3 was a giddy blast, and now, along comes the second of the rebooted Star Trek outings - and it might just be one of the year's finest films. J.J. Abrams once again sets his phaser to stun. And he does. Magnificently.

There's hardly time to breathe with In Darkness before you're hit with another thrill-ride, well-crafted quip or that all-important emotional punch - think Skyfall with holograms on. The alien-goes-to-Eton look of Benedict Cumberbatch makes for one delicious villain, whilst Pine, Quinto and the gang settle ever deeper into the roles they seem destined to play. Even the stock-character comedy accents of Yelchin (as Russian Tactical Officer Chekhov) and Pegg (as Scottish engineer Scotty) can't quite derail the sci-fi fantasy fun here. MajQa'.

RATING: 5/5

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' London Premiere (VIDEO AND PHOTOS) Moviefone | By Dana Taddeo Posted: 05/02/2013 5:02 pm EDT

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, and Zoe Saldana were all on hand for the UK premiere of their new movie.

Leading ladies Eve and Saldana were every male Trekkie's dream, looking gorgeous on the red carpet -- we expected nothing less. Star Trek's leading men didn't disappoint, either. Pine and Quinto both rocked three-piece suits and, we're sure, had the female fans swooning left and right.

CLIVE OWEN: FIRST LOOK AT GUILLAUME CANET’S BLOOD TIES BY JOSHUA BRUNSTING ON APRIL 15, 2013 AT 8:00 AM (CRITERION)

With the announcement of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival lineup now within days of being announced, some of the year’s bigger arthouse projects are getting prepared to be thrust into the spotlight, the white hot spotlight, that is, that is brought by the iconic festival.

And one of those films comes to us from director Guillaume Canet.

Entitled Blood Ties, the film features a cast that would surely heat up the Croisette this year, featuring Clive Owen, Mila Kunis, Matthaias Schoenaerts and Zoe Saldana, and is itself a remake of a French film known as Les Liens Du Sang. Canet himself starred in the original film, and this remake tells the tale of two brothers, who head back into a world of gangsters the elder knows far too well (he being a convict himself, played by Owen) with the hopes of helping their family

The Sherlock star is pictured as villain John Harrison amid a devastated London in the latest promo for the sci-fi movie sequel

Benedict Cumberbatch, playing villanious force of terror John Harrison, takes centre stage in the new poster for Star Trek Into Darkness.

With the London skyline behind him and his dark trench coat blowing in the breeze, you'd be forgiven for being reminded of a similar publicity shot for Sherlock... But, this time, London is all but destroyed (even the iconic Gherkin is on fire) and Cumberbatch is not on the side of the angels...

Benedict Cumberbatch - Benedict Cumberbatch Fell For Simon Pegg's Star Trek Prank 18 February 2013 (CONTACT MUSIC)

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch spent a morning on the Star Trek set with cream smeared on his face after falling for a prank by his co-star Simon Pegg.

The two Brits are among the star-studded cast of Star Trek Into Darkness, and Pegg reveals he became the resident joker during filming.

And one prank fooled not only Cumberbatch, but Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana as well.

Pegg is quoted by Britain's Daily Mirror as saying, "I'm the biggest prankster. I convinced Benedict Cumberbatch that he had to wear special cream when we worked in this facility on the movie otherwise he'd get radiation poisoning. He, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana put it on.

Star Trek Sequel Trailer: Why Zoe Saldana Made Costar Benedict Cumberbatch Blush Over It (E!)

by Marc Malkin

Star Trek fans aren't the only ones who are foaming at the mouth to see Star Trek Into Darkness, director J.J. Adams' second installment of the sci-fi franchise.

Especially after yesterday's release of the film's new 60-second trailer.

"My [talent] agency was just wetting themselves," Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays a villain in the sequel, told me last night at the Children's Defense Fund's Beat the Odds gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel. "They were ringing me up and sending me emails. It's really exciting. I, like everyone else, feel teased. I can't wait to see the whole film now."

Costar Zoe Saldana watched the trailer on her iPad after running morning errands. "I emailed the whole gang," she said. "I was like, ‘Benedict, your voice sounds better than [late R&B singer] Barry White's. I'm sure I made him blush."

Clive Owen: RACHEL ZOE BRINGS SKYLER ALONG FOR A POLO DAY WITH CLIVE OWEN (Attention LUCY PARKER) Posted on June 2, 2012 4:59PM by Allie Merriam (POP SUGAR)

Clive Owen hosted the fifth annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic this afternoon with polo player Nacho Figueras and Nacho's wife, Delfina Blaquier. The trio were among the first to arrive at the Jersey City, NJ, location for the match. It was the first time the space was used, since in years past, the polo match was held on New York's Governors Island. A long list of celeb guests were ferried over to Jersey, including Clive's Blood Ties costar Zoe Saldana, Minka Kelly, Padma Lakshmi, Once Upon a Time's Jennifer Morrison, and models like Jessica Stam, Alek Wek, and Hilary Rhoda. Rachel Zoe was among the last to arrive, bringing husband Rodger Berman and their son, Skyler, who was dressed for the occasion in a mini-striped suit. Rachel's friend and makeup artist Joey Maalouf went as well, and he kept a close eye on Skyler.

Clive admitted that this was actually his first polo match, and he was happy to come because he'll be in the Big Apple for the next month working on Blood Ties with director Guillaume Canet. In the VIP enclosure, he caught up with his fellow Brit Matthew Rhys. Matthew made the rounds with UK socialite Poppy Delevingne. It was a veritable UK fest — appropriate, considering that the Diamond Jubilee kicked off in London today.

Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch was low-key as he said hello to friends, but there was a long line of ladies wanting to say hello to the actor, who's fresh off a stint on the set of the forthcoming Star Trek sequel.

The Black Swan star was the epitome of a glowing newlywed in her cream cheesecloth and lace gown paired with calico espadrilles.

Her look was completed by a daisy bouquet and the same flowers pinned in her brunette hair.

Meanwhile, the groom was positively retro in a three-piece salmon suit paired with a bright blue tie.
Emerging from the church, the on-screen couple looked overjoyed after exchanging vows in their faux wedding.

A giggle Kunis was seen being gallantly escorted to a waiting car by dashing Owen.
The pair play employees working in an auto repair shop in the new movie.

Last week their characters were spotted sharing a steamy kiss for an engagement scene, in which Owen was seen slipping a ring on Mila's finger.

Guillaume Canet's upcoming crime thriller tells the story of two brothers, played by Clive and Billy Crudup, who become involved with an organised crime gang in Brooklyn in the 1970s.

The movie, which comes out next year, also stars Zoe Saldana, James Caan, Lili Taylor, and Canet's real-life wife, Marion Cotllard.
