Christian Bale emerges 'Out of the Furnace' (USA TODAY) Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY

Christian Bale plays a steelworker forced to go up against criminals to find his brother in this sneak peek at "Out of the Furnace."

In Out of the Furnace, Christian Bale has none of Batman's superhero qualities lingering from the Dark Knight trilogy.

That's just how director Scott Cooper wanted it for his film about a steelworker standing up against tough criminals, Cooper's first foray since writing and directing 2009's Crazy Heart. Out of the Furnace is set to open Nov. 27.

"You often find superheroic people wearing capes and costumes in film today," says Cooper. "But working-class Americans are the real heroes. This is the story of this man who works in a blast furnace, but with themes of justice, retribution and courage."

"Russell is not of that personality, nor does he wish to be," says Bale. "But he finds himself having to confront these people in order to do the right thing. He's only got his own fortitude and will power, nothing else."

To capture the blue-collar spirit, Cooper insisted on filming in Braddock, Pa., where he set the story. The director was impressed with the way Bale immersed himself, taking none of his own clothing on the shoot — wearing only what Russell would wear. Bale also experienced work on the steel furnace.

"It's long hours, unhealthy conditions and intense heat.," says Bale. "It's dangerous work. The guys had recently lost a friend who had died on the job. But there's a great bond. And they have a love for it, despite the hardships."

Robert Pattinson Teaming Up With Carey Mulligan For James Marsh's Hold On To Me 0 Comments published: 2012-10-16 15:47:45 Author: Eric Eisenberg (CINEMA BLEND)

If Carey Mulligan isn't careful she is going to earn the jealousy of women worldwide. Just last year she got to star alongside both Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender in Drive and Shame, respectively, and now she's going to get the chance to work alongside yet another one of Hollywood's biggest heartthrobs. Robert Pattinson, who has the final film in the Twilight franchise due out next month, has been cast alongside Mulligan in the drama Hold on To Me.

Deadline has learned that the project is being sold at the American Film Market, and the project has Academy Award winning filmmaker James Marsh attached to helm. Based on a true story, the movie will have Mulligan playing a "femme fatale who with her boyfriend kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man." The plan, however, goes horribly wrong and they have to bury the body. Pattinson will be playing Jimmy, the "woman’s life love." Brad Ingelsby, who wrote the upcoming Scott Cooper thriller Out of the Furnace, is writing the screenplay.

Christian Bale will be in Out of the Furnace next (BRITSCENE)

British actor Christian Bale, next to be seen playing The Dark Knight in the final film of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy this summer, has rejoined Scott Cooper‘s revenge drama Out of the Furnace after dropping out last year.

Out of the Furnace follows a man released from prison after serving four years. While he initially hopes to stick to the straight and narrow, his plans for a quiet life are ruined when he decides to find out who murdered his younger brother and avenge the man’s killing.

Formerly known as The Low Dweller when Brad Ingelsby handed in his script back in 2008, the film originally attracted directors such as Ridley Scott and Rupert Sanders as well as attracting interest from Mark Wahlberg to feature.

With Scott now producing through his banner Scott Free alongside Leonardo DiCaprio‘s company Appian Way, Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) has been confirmed as the film’s director after picking up the project last April, which he has been re-writing to suit his needs, with Bale set to star.
