The Hobbit: Police called to 'The Hobbit' casting call (NME)

January 30, 2012 12:22
Overwhelming numbers lead to event being shut down
Police called to 'The Hobbit' casting call
A casting call looking for extras for The Hobbit has been shut down over safety concerns.

Police were called to the open auditions in New Zealand after an overwhelming number of hopefuls turned up, causing doors to be closed early.

Senior Sergeant Steve Braybrook told NZ Newswire: "There was enough concern that the police attend," before confirming that the organiser of the event at Belmony Hall in Lower Huttt decided to "call it quits"

It was reportedly the location of the hall near a main highway that led to concern for the safety of the gathering crowds.

Senior Sergeant Braybrook said that the manner in which people were queuing, together with some parking the other side of the highway and then crossing it to get to the venue, contributed to the early closure.

Open castings were held in Cowley on Saturday to find extras for the new Anna Karenina blockbuster that will be released next year.

The film is being made by Joe Wright, the director of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, and will star Keira Knightley and Jude Law. Part of the filming will take place at a heritage railway centre near Didcot Parkway station which will serve as a mock Russian location.

For this section of the production the filmmakers wanted several extras ideally of Russian or Eastern European descent. The casting session was entirely open to the public but the producers did also specifically contact the Oxford University Russian Society to encourage students to attend.
Second year English student, Esme Hicks, told Cherwell that she went along to the auditions because of the prospect of “good pay and something to put on my CV and the opportunity to see a proper big-dog film director at work.”

Karis Alpcan, a Univ History and German student, explained the audition process, “When we got there, we queued for about an hour, then we had to fill in a form with our basic information, had our measurements taken and then had our photos done by a photographer there. The process took about 10 minutes.”

Those that are selected to take part in the filming will be paid £100 for each of the four days of filming which will begin on the 11th November

Henry Cavill looking scruffy and adorable

ReelzChannel.com

10.07.11 by Ryan

The Vancouver set of the upcoming Superman franchise reboot, Man of Steel, is proving to be a fertile opportunity for "spy" photos. Earlier this week, Russell Crowe stepped outside the studio to smoke a cigarette and was caught in full costume as Jor-El, Superman's biological father.
The latest set photos depict a bearded and shoeless Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) looking much like a homeless man on the Canadian set, which is doubling for Alaska in the movie. Reportedly, Man of Steel finds Superman wandering the globe and trying to find himself and understand his powers, though an official synopsis has yet to be released by Warner Bros. Should the storyline be true, it would explain Cavill's hobo-like appearance. Of course Cavill will also suit up as Superman, as revealed in the movie's first official photo.
Set photos of Amy Adams dressed as Lois Lane on the Vancouver set have also surfaced via The Daily Mail, though the sole revelation of the photos is that Adams will be keeping her red hair, unlike previous actresses who have played the part.
Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Sucker Punch) is directing Man of Steel, which was conceived by screenwriter David Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. The cast includes Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Superman's adoptive parents Jonathan and Martha Kent, respectively; Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief Perry White; Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Superman's biological mother; Michael Shannon as Zod; and Antje Traue as Faora.
