‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ is directed by J.J. Abrams with a script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof. Abrams is producing with Bryan Burk through Bad Robot Productions, along with Lindelof, Kurtzman and Orci. Chris Pine (James T. Kirk), John Cho (Sulu), Bruce Greenwood (Christopher Pike), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones) and Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov) reprise their roles from the 2009 ‘Star Trek’ original, with new parts for Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Noel Clarke and Peter Weller.

It was recently announced that ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ will now open in the UK on May 9th, while the May 17th date in the US appears to be locked in. 'Sherlock' season 3 might not air until 2014 -- EXCLUSIVE by James Hibberd (EW)

Expecting the return of Sherlock next summer?

Try late 2013. Perhaps even 2014, depending where you live.

Start of production on the third cycle of the fan-adored detective drama has been moved from January to March. Sources say the shift was necessary to accommodate the busy schedules of the show’s breakout stars, Benedict Cumberbatch (who’s in Star Trek 2) and Martin Freeman (starring in The Hobbit).

The BBC has not announced a premiere date for season three, but given that January was previously announced as the start of production, fans hoped to see Holmes and Watson return in the summer. Sources say the BBC will air Sherlock series three in late 2013. PBS has to wait until after the BBC’s window. A PBS spokesperson says Sherlock will air either late 2013 — or early 2014.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust has so far raised an astonishing £23,778 from fans around the world and friends for The Prince’s Trust for this year’s event.

While speculation has run rampant about who exactly Benedict Cumberbatch is playing as the villain in "Star Trek 2" -- with some folks utterly convinced he's Khan (or some kind of relation) -- it looks like J.J. Abrams is throwing it back even further, should this report turn out to be on the level.

Doing the rounds for "Dredd," which premieres at Comic-Con this week, Karl Urban spoke to SFX and when asked about working with Cumberbatch on the sci-fi sequel, he let a bit of intel slip out saying: “He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

As SFX notes, Gary Mitchell appeared in the original "Star Trek" TV series "Where No Man Has Gone Before." It was actually shot as a second pilot for the show, but wound up running as the third episode of the first season. Anyway, originally played by Gary Lockwood, Gary is a former Academy pal of Captain Kirk's, who gains telepathic and telekinetic, godlike powers. Spock advises Kirk to kill Mitchell, but he initially resists and tries to maroon him on a remote, industrial planet instead. But that effort fails and he's forced to take more drastic action.

Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Star Trek 2' villain revealed? Published Monday, Jul 9 2012, 7:51am EDT | By Emma Dibdin (DIGITAL SPY)

According to SFX, the Sherlock star will play Gary Mitchell, an original series character who attended Starfleet Academy with James Kirk (Chris Pine).

Mitchell and Kirk were friends until an encounter with a galactic barrier transformed him into a cruel, ruthless and supremely powerful villain.

The actor was cast in JJ Abrams's sequel earlier this year, but there has so far been no confirmation of what part he is playing beyond the fact that his character is a villain.

Karl Urban, who plays Bones in Abrams's rebooted franchise, appeared to unintentionally confirm the role, saying of Cumberbatch: "He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."

Benedict Cumberbatch Is "Very Flattered and Slightly Bemused" About His Heartthrob Status - POP SUGAR (OH NO THEY DIDN'T)

Benedict Cumberbatch was one of the celeb guests at Saturday's Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at New Jersey's Liberty State Park. PopSugar: We're here celebrating a very English sport, polo, while back in London, the Diamond Jubilee is going on! Are you excited for the queen's 60th anniversary?

Benedict Cumberbatch: I am exited for the Jubilee. I feel a bit of a treason-worthy abscondee. I planned to have a holiday here a long while after I finished shooting a film I've just done. I guess that's why I am here rather than over there. It's very exciting. We've got three huge events, really, in this next couple of months, this being a kickoff for it. I think, like lots of places in Europe, we need all the home-spun joy and festivities and celebrations we can get at the moment.

PopSugar: Does that mean you're attending the Olympics?


Benedict: I am as much as anyone who doesn't have a ticket can go to the Olympics. I'm going to avoid all the traffic and maybe see the best events at home, I think. But we'll see, hopefully. I haven't really made any plans, to be honest, to go, but I'm really, really excited about hosting it.

PopSugar: You're obviously talking about Star Trek 2. How was it joining that cast to make the movie?

Benedict: Fantastic. Zoe's just my amazing, good friend. The whole thing was just an absolute blast. I mean really, really good fun. I had a terrific time doing it.

Although he was very good at not disclosing any spoilers, Lindelof did give some pretty flattering praises of Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as the movie’s baddie:

“Benedict Cumberbatch, I can already say with a certain degree of confidence, that he is gonna give an iconic film performance and one of the best sci-fi performances that I’ve ever seen.  And not even having seen the movie yet, just sitting there in video village with the headphones on.  So I’m really psyched.”

Rumors have been flying about Cumberbatch playing the role of Khan. But Simon Pegg, who plays Scottie on the film, immediately put that rumor to rest. “(Cumberbatch is) not just another disgruntled alien. It’s a really interesting… sort of… thing…Obviously I can’t talk about it.” He continued to say, “It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.”

With filming already having been completed last week, ‘Star Trek 2’ is now in the hands of the post-production team who will have almost a year to do their magic as the movie is slated to be released on May 17, 2013.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait for too long before the first trailer is released!

There had been reports the genetically engineered character - originally played by Ricardo Montalban - had been due to make a comeback in the new film, due for release next year.

However Pegg - who will once again play Scotty in the new Trek movie - has now dismissed this as 'a myth'.

'Everyone's saying it is but it's not,' he said. 'I think people just want to have a scoop.

'It annoys me - it's beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.

'It masquerades as interest in the film but really it's just nosiness and impatience.

Sherlock actor and writer Mark Gatiss has said that he wants elements of the turbulent relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his brother Mycroft to remain a mystery.

Gatiss - who plays Mycroft in the BBC's adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories - explained that cuts were made to 'A Study in Pink', as it was felt that the original version gave away too much about the brothers' dynamic.

Speaking during a web chat organized by Sherlock's American broadcaster PBS, Gatiss said: "[It's] far better to leave things in everyone's imaginations. It's nice to give little hints here and there but never a full answer. Why are the Holmes brothers the way they are? What are their parents like? Maybe we'll see one day. 

"We actually cut a bit from 'Pink' which gave a bit too much away about the obvious frisson of animosity that exists between them. It's not there in the original stories. British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is so hot right now.

He is almost literally in everything, including last year’s awards-season favorites “War Horse” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” the hit BBC/PBS revival of “Sherlock” and two highly anticipated future blockbusters “Star Trek 2” and “The Hobbit.”

Cumberbatch fans should be excited to see him reprise his role as the quirky and slightly sociopathic Sherlock Holmes when the second season premieres this Sunday (May 6) on PBS’s Masterpiece. MTV News recently caught up with the very busy and talented actor, who attributes the show’s success to its “extraordinary” and “very intelligent, very loyal” fans and promised that they won’t be disappointed with the action that unfolds in the second season.

Speaking of those intelligent fans, we asked Cumberbatch if he was aware of the extensive collection of creative and explicit fan fiction that has surfaced online since the premiere of the show’s first season. “I am startlingly aware of it,”

Cumberbatch said with a smile. “I don’t go seeking it, but Martin Freeman, who was an absolute luddite on the first series, suddenly came back from New Zealand having done a little radio short drama called “The Hobbit,” he came back and he had this beautiful Mac [computer] with him and said ‘Hey, look at this Tumblr.’

And I said, ‘What? Tumblr? What?’ He knows more about it than I do and he was showing me some of them. Some of it is really racy, un-viewable even on MTV. It’s cool.”

 Set to play a “mysterious villain,” Cumberbatch is receiving high marks for his work thus far in Star Trek 2.

“He’s incredible,” said Kurtzman. “What he does with language is incredible. His training is amazing and he’s so magnetic. He holds the screen in any size frame. He really is a joy to watch.”

Benedict Cumberbatch In 'Star Trek 2': Villain Role For 'Sherlock' Star (Huff Post)

Benedict Cumberbatch is going from solving crimes in London to perpetrating them in space.

The "Sherlock" star has joined JJ Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek" sequel in a villain role, Variety reports. While it was reported late in 2011 that the second film would see classic baddie Khan do battle against the crew of the USS Enterprise, there is no indication which character Cumberbatch will play.

A supporting star in this winter's "War Horse" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," Cumberbatch's filmography has been growing in leaps and bounds. In a recent interview with the Radio Times, he worried that his privileged childhood -- he is the son of two British actors -- was keeping him typecast in pompous, unlikable roles; he's voicing the evil Smaug in Peter Jackson's upcoming "Hobbit" movies, and playing another villain will probably do little to disprove his notion. Still, working in massive franchises with Jackson and Abrams is probably worth the tradeoff.

Cumberbatch joins a cast that returns Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Simon Pegg as Scotty. Edgar Ramirez is reported to have auditioned for the villain role, while Benicio Del Toro was rumored to be playing Khan late last year before that was shot down.
