'Sherlock' Co-Creator Tells Fans to Expect "Tragedy" in Season 4

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
10:24 PM PST 11/20/2014 by Abid Rahman

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has some bad news for fans of the hit BBC drama, telling them to "expect tragedy" during the forthcoming fourth season.

Speaking to the Radio Times on Thursday, Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the show, said, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes." He refused to reveal whether that meant the death of John Watson's wife, Mary, as happens in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

The show, which stars man-of-the-moment Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and The Hobbit's Martin Freeman as Watson, has Freeman's real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, co-starring as Mary Watson. Freeman himself has speculated before that Mary would likely meet her end, telling the Daily Telegraph, “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. … So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies — so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

Mark Gatiss: “Tom Hiddleston would be wonderful in Sherlock”

Ever since Mycroft Holmes made reference to “the other one” in the Sherlock series three finale, Tom Hiddleston has been top of many fans's lists to play the previously unknown third Holmes brother should he ever appear in the series.

The Thor star has just the right blend of eccentric Britishness, quirky good looks and on-screen intensity to convince as Benedict Cumberbatch's second sibling.

And it seems Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss – who also happens to play Mycroft in the BBC detective drama – agrees, admitting “Tom would be wonderful in Sherlock”, but adding "I’m sure but he only does movies now. What can I say?”

“I’ll ask him if you like,” Gatiss told an audience at a recent Q&A in Brazil, continuing (with tongue firmly in cheek), “Well it’s an internet rumour so it must be true. We might as well just wait and see what happens.”

CBS’ hit Sherlock Holmes drama “Elementary” returns for its second season in just a few days with a special London-based premiere. Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) and Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) will kick off the new season by leaving New York City behind and heading back to Sherlock’s childhood home.

According to CBS, “Holmes and Watson travel to London to help track down an old mentor and investigate an unsolved mystery.” The two detectives won’t just be solving crimes, they’ll also be delving deeper into Sherlock’s past. CBS teases, “Meanwhile, Mycroft Holmes (Rhys Ifans), Sherlock’s estranged brother, reunites with Sherlock and reveals some secrets of his own.”

The reunion of the two brothers, who don’t appear to get along very well, will allow Joan to find out more about Sherlock’s life before he moved to New York City. But that’s not all. According to TVGuide, Sherlock and Joan make a bet about Mycroft: whether he wants to sleep with her or not.

Game of Thrones loves its British actors, and it’s reaching over into Steven Moffat’s territory once again to grab Mark Gatiss, who many of you may know as Mycroft, the brother of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Homes in Sherlock. (Oona Chaplin (Talisa Maegyr) was also a veteran of Sherlock, having had a role in “The Scandal of Belgravia” before jumping over to the BBC’s The Hours). Gatis, actually, is also the co-creator of Sherlock, along with Steven Moffat. Besides Mycroft Holmes, Mark Gatis is also from the Doctor Who world, where he’s written six episodes, but is probably most famous for playing Lazaurs in 2007′s “The Lazarus Experiment”:

Jonny Lee Miller: 'Elementary' season 2 casting news: Rhys Ifans to recur as Mycroft Holmes TVJUNE 26, 2013BY: MEREDITH JACOBS (EXAMINER)

Actor Rhys Ifans arrives at the premiere of Columbia Pictures' 'The Amazing Spider-Man' at the Regency Village Theatre on June 28, 2012 in Westwood, California.

It's already been announced that "Elementary" is heading to London for its second season premiere, and on Wednesday, June 26, CBS announced some very exciting casting news, especially for those hoping to see some familiar characters on the show.

According to CBS, Rhys Ifans ("The Amazing Spider-Man," "Notting Hill") will be recurring as Sherlock Holmes' older brother, Mycroft Holmes, beginning with the "Elementary" season 2 premiere, which will be shot on location in London. Mark Gatiss: 'Mycroft is even cleverer than Sherlock' The actor reveals more about the brothers' relationship in hit series (NME)

Mark Gatiss has revealed more about his portrayal of Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock.

The actor, also a co-creator on the show, plays the detective’s older brother and shadowy government official in the BBC update. And in a new webchat with the show's US broadcaster PBS, Gatiss said that he would like to explore the relationship further in future series. But he also said that scene was cut out from the episode 'A Study In Pink' because it revealed too much.

Gatiss said: "It's far better to leave things in everyone’s imaginations. It's nice to give little hints here and there but never a full answer. Why are the Holmes brothers the way they are? What are their parents like? Maybe we'll see one day.

Sherlock, Mycroft relationship will remain a mystery, says Mark Gatiss Published Tuesday, May 15 2012, 1:38am EDT | By Kate Goodacre (DIGITAL SPY)

Sherlock actor and writer Mark Gatiss has said that he wants elements of the turbulent relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his brother Mycroft to remain a mystery.

Gatiss - who plays Mycroft in the BBC's adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories - explained that cuts were made to 'A Study in Pink', as it was felt that the original version gave away too much about the brothers' dynamic.

Speaking during a web chat organized by Sherlock's American broadcaster PBS, Gatiss said: "[It's] far better to leave things in everyone's imaginations. It's nice to give little hints here and there but never a full answer. Why are the Holmes brothers the way they are? What are their parents like? Maybe we'll see one day.

"We actually cut a bit from 'Pink' which gave a bit too much away about the obvious frisson of animosity that exists between them. It's not there in the original stories. It comes entirely from Billy Wilder and Izzy Diamond's brilliant 'Private Life of Sherlock Holmes' and Christopher Lee's cold, disdainful Mycroft. if you haven't seen it - do!"
