Many "Sherlock" fans are waiting for the hit TV series' return. "Sherlock" Season 4 is already in the works, but fans should still wait for months because "Sherlock" Season 4 will not be available until January 2017.

Deadline reported that three episodes are "Sherlock" Season 4 are in the works and these will surely entertain fans to bits because per the report, it promises "laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases." Are you excited?

Benedict Cumberbatch, "Sherlock" Season 4 lead star is happy that they are finally working on the new season. He said that he is"genuinely thrilled to be back filming Sherlock with all the cast and crew. I can't wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait... though not for long. ... And it will be worth it."

Aside from this, "Sherlock" Season 4 will remain dark because per Zap2it, "terror and tragedy are looming" for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Will someone bid goodbye to the show? Mirror reported that "Sherlock" Season 4 will be hit by tragedies and that Mary may die. However, this is not confirmed yet as we can't tell how closely the show will follow Conan Doyle's book.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns to reprise the titular role of an active sociopath alongside Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson and Amanda Abbing as Mary. In "Sherlock" Season 4, the couple will be awaiting the arrival of their first baby.

"Sherlock" Season 4 co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis teased that their filming could be their final and it will be big time, saying, "This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax."

Sherlock co-creator confirms special is set in Victorian London

For the eagerly anticipated Sherlock special episode, Holmes and Watson are essentially going back in time.

Co-creator Steven Moffat has now confirmed the special will take place in Victorian London, validating fan assumptions about the episode. Last month the show’s stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming Sherlock in 19th century clothes, causing fans to wonder if perhaps the crime-fighting duo attended a costume ball, or ir perhaps it was just some kind of dream sequence within the special. But no: The 90-minute episode literally takes place more than 100 years ago.

Sherlock writer Steven Moffat and actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have won Emmys for the final episode of the latest series.

Moffat won for best writing in a miniseries, movie or dramatic special, for the BBC's "Sherlock: His Last Vow", which aired on public broadcaster PBS in the US.

Cumberbatch and Freeman won best supporting actor in a miniseries or movie for the same episode.

Neither were present to accept the award but Moffat came on stage to thank his wife and producer Sue Vertue and Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss.

Louise Brealey on kissing Cumberbatch

Do you mind if I ask you about… “The Kiss?” Louise Brealey interrupts, before bursting out laughing. Clearly it’s a question she’s been asked before.

Brealey is best known as Molly Hooper in TV’s Sherlock, the timid pathologist hopelessly besotted with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baker Street detective, as played by Benedict Cumberbatch. The drama is a global phenomenon, its leading man a sex symbol and that kiss – when Molly’s dreams momentarily came true – a YouTube sensation.

In fact, there were four kisses. “I milked it!” she admits. “Afterwards, Ben and I watched it back on the monitor.” She adopts a Hollywood drawl. “‘Yup, that’s pretty hot.’ And of course it went completely crackers when the show came out. I got 7,000 Twitter followers within five minutes of that kiss airing. It had doubled by the time the episode ended.”

While the odd tweet seethed with jealousy, most were a virtual pat on the back. Brealey believes that’s because “Cumberbitches” – as members 
of the Cumberbatch appreciation society like to call themselves – can identify with Molly. “She’s unthreatening.

She’s an ordinary woman experiencing the agony of unrequited love, and most of us have been there.”

Brealey’s performance persuaded him otherwise. Molly has also become a central character in fan fiction, with thousands of stories posted online. Brealey has only read one. “I just thought I was reading your average story and it turned into straddling and nipple-piercing!”

Growing up in Northampton, she was an academic child, the only one of her siblings that her parents could afford to send to “posh school”. So, while they left the local comprehensive at 16, she read history at Cambridge – a late applicant, it turns out. “When my dad found out I hadn’t applied, he hit the roof. I tried to explain to him I didn’t want to be an Oxbridge reject, but he said: ‘Tough s**t!’ And quite rightly, as it goes.”

‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Air Date: Plus 10 Things To Know About Fourth Season

The air date -- both U.S. and UK -- of "Sherlock" season 4 has not been revealed, but the current estimation is that te new season will air in 2016. Why? Each season thus far has been released with a two-year gap -- season one aired in 2010, Season 2 premiered in 2012, and the third season in 2014 -- and with season 3 having aired at the start of this year, it would make sense that the fourth season arrive in 2016.

It should be noted; however, that the show isn't intentionally seeking a pattern and that BBC has reportedly denied the rumors that Season 4 will return in 2016. In fact, RadioTimes reports, citing anonymous sources, that the new season of "Sherlock" could be airing as early as next year! “It will not be this year – but 2015 is very much the hope and expectation,” said the source, adding that production will take place at the start of 2015.

Until then, here are ten things you should know about season 4 of "Sherlock":

1. Moriarty could be alive. The last scene of "Sherlock" season 3 opened the door for Moriarty (the main villain from season 2) to be alive. The villain made his return across the digital screens of the world, which leaves his fate just as murky as the new season's premiere date. The character popped up in Season 3 -- he was scene in Sherlock's imagination -- but could Moriarty have faked his own death?

“I can’t really say what we’re doing with that, but there is no last-minute whim in this," said Steven Moffat to Vulture when asked about the new twist. "We’ve had what we’re going to do with Moriarty in place from before the second season. Exactly what we’re going to do. I remember talking it through with Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty. Wait and see what’s going to happen.”

2. Watson will be a father. Mary Morstan wed Watson in season 3, and by the last episode, it was revealed that Morstan and Watson were expecting a baby. When the show returns to the screen, Mary would either have already given birth or she would be on the verge of it. Regardless of the minor details of when she pops out Baby Watson, one thing can be certain: Fans will see Watson, Morstan, and Holmes adjusting to a new member in their lives.

3. John and Mary will be interesting parents. In an interview with Vulture, actress Amanda Abbington revealed what kind of parents John and Mary would be.

"On the one hand, they’d probably be reckless because they’re both quite psychopathic," said Abbington. "But I think an assassin and an army doctor who loves trouble, I mean, that kid has got nothing to worry about. Screwed up mentally, of course, but if there’s any bullying on the playground, we’re covered."

4. Janine will be back. Think you saw the end of Mary's friend and Sherlock's temporary love interest, Janine? Nope! She'll be back and they'll be friends, according to Moffat.

"He likes her, though," the writer told IGN. "He'll see her again. They'll be pals. I loved Yasmine's performance as Janine -- she still likes him in the end. At some point, you know, if Sherlock Holmes has to go to a function and he needs a date, he'll phone her up. Now, he'll not expect her to say no. She'll be very cross with him, but she'll show up, and they'll have a good time. They will, because he likes her."

5. The third Holmes brother may appear. Sherlock Holmes has another brother, Sherrinford Holmes, according to some variations of short stories. Hardcore fans have long been speculating that the creative team of the show will introduce the third brother to add a new dimension to the hit series, and Moffat was cryptic about whether or not this brother will make an appearance in the next season.

6. A-list actor may be playing the third brother. There has been a great deal of online discussion about "Thor" and "Avengers" star Tom Hiddleston joining the cast of "Sherlock" as Benedict Cumberbatch's character's third brother. In a Q&A in Brazil, "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also happens to play Mycroft Holmes in the series, joked about the idea when assked if Hiddleston would be considered for the role.

"Tom would be wonderful in 'Sherlock,'" Gatiss says. "But he only does movies now. What can I say? I'll ask him if you like."

Benedict Cumberbatch: BBC Sherlock Season 4 & 5 Update-Moffat And Gatiss Say Quality Won't Be Sacrificed; No Movie In The Works?

Since the start of Sherlock Season 3, rumors have been circulating about the plot of the show's fourth season. Steven Moffat, the show's executive producer, told The Guardian that the idea for the next season just popped into his head while they were sitting on top of the show's production bus. He unfortunately added that there are no plans of making a Sherlock movie.

Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have expressed their interest in continuing to do the series as well. The plot for Seasons 4 and 5 has already been laid out according to Moffat and they have no intention of casting famous personalities but rather to put in more thrilling scenes and angles.

Moffat declared that he does not know when Season 4 will be released. He said that Sue is working on the schedules while Capaldi has just started "Doctor Who." Sherlock fans may have to wait two years for Season 4 but Moffat assured them that quality will not be sacrificed.

If we will look at the current schedule of Freeman and Cumberbatch, it indeed looks like we will have to wait for 2016 for Sherlock Season 4. The last episode indicating that Moriarty was still alive made fans to want more of Sherlock. Moriarty was seen on the screen asking "Did you miss me?" in the last minutes of the final episode.

Benedict Cumberbatch Fans Not Disappointed During Meet the Filmmakers

Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch turned out to see him live in the flesh during a recent Meet the Filmmakers event in the Apple store on London’s Regent street. Creator of the hit BBC show Sherlock Steven Moffat revealed facts about the show, including the bombshell that fans may have to wait years to discover what is going on with Moriarty. Moffat and stars of the show, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington also appeared.

Fans were  treated to news of a deleted scene from the third series of Sherlock that would have upped the bromance tension between lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson). During the hilarious stag night sequence, there was originally a scene of the pair at a gay club. Cumberbatch stated that his character has no idea where they were until a group of half-naked men wander past. Moffat defended the cut saying that the original stag scene was too long.

Freeman also informed fans that Benedict Cumberbatch had a lot of trouble getting the epic Best Man speech right. He stated that he and other crew members played charades and other games while Cumberbatch fretted on set. He quipped that the actor was having a nervous breakdown during the scene while everyone else relaxed. The Meet the Filmmakers Apple event was packed with fans, with many more disappointed that they could not get in. Those that were inside endured teasing by Moffat that they may have to wait “years” before the show revealed what is happening in the Moriarty saga. The final episode of the third season ends with a static image of Moriarty broadcast throughout London and the words “miss me?” Moffat quipped that Moriarty had shot himself through the head and was not coming back, but the series seems to suggest otherwise.  He has revealed in an interview with Collider.com that his plans for Moriarty are “the longest plan” that they have had.

SHERLOCK Creator Steven Moffat and Producer Sue Vertue Talk Plans for Seasons 4 and 5, Juggling Schedules with DOCTOR WHO, and More

Even though Sherlock hasn’t quite finished its Season 3 run on Masterpiece on PBS, fans of the popular series are already anxious to know when it will return with new episodes.  Thanks to the increasing work schedules for show stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who have very busy acting careers, and Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who write the episodes, the gap between seasons doesn’t seem as though it will shorten, anytime soon.

But the good news is that there are plans for a Season 4 and 5, which show creator Steven Moffat and producer Sue Vertue spoke to Collider about.  During this exclusive interview, they discussed how the waiting period isn’t ideal but hasn’t hurt their viewership, that the scheduling needs to be juggled with Moffat’s other series, Doctor Who, how fans will get more episodes, in the long run, because they make shorter seasons and work around the actors’ availability, that it’s not likely they’ll have another season ready by Christmas (which had been previously rumored), and that they have ideas for Season 4 that will lead to a terrifying Season 5.

Were you worried about making fans wait for two years, between Season 2 and Season 3, and did you breathe a sigh of relief to learn that the audience was still there?

SUE VERTUE:  Funny enough, two years seems to go very quickly when you’re making it.  I wasn’t that worried about it.  You do think, “Are they still going to be there?”  But the figures were up half a million in the UK, from the year before, so they haven’t gone anywhere, by the looks of it.  It’s not ideal, but it’s the best we could have done.  But, the will is there.  They want to do more.  It’s just trying to get everyone free, at the same time.  That’s just what I’m doing now.  Benedict said, “I’m free in February,” and I said, “But, we haven’t got a script!”  I’m working on it.

STEVEN MOFFAT:  There was still so much interest in Sherlock that we didn’t have any doubt.  We didn’t expect the audience to be larger.  It’s gotten larger each year.  Contrary to what people think, that doesn’t happen.  With very, very rare exceptions, audiences, even with huge hits, go gently down.  Even for massively successful shows, they decline gently over time.  That’s normal and fair enough.  Sherlock has grown each year, which is spectacular.  So, we didn’t doubt that the audience was still there.

The excuses the press would make, to try to print the words Sherlock or Benedict Cumberbatch or Martin Freeman were very lame excuses.  Some of the articles about Sherlock are so insane.  I remember a particularly hilarious one, just after we’d figured out the final audience for the first episode was 16 million, there was an article in the paper saying, “Is Sherlock scaring away the casual viewer?,” and we were thinking, “Well, no.  Unless these are 16 million hardcore fans, I don’t think so.”  But, they will just find any reason to mention it.

So, we knew, in that gap, that we hadn’t gone off the radar.  And Martin and Benedict have been filling their time, to say the least.  They don’t worry when they make James Bond films that you wait two or three years, do they?  They know you’ll be there.  It’s an interesting model for television, and maybe one that comes up again.  I think it might.



Are you working extra hard to shorten the gap between seasons, or do you just have to deal with scheduling?

MOFFAT:  We deal with scheduling.  I’ve also got to do Doctor Who.  I’ve got no choice about that.  That’s the day job.  Everyone is a little bit busy.  But also, it’s worked to make them wait.  If we made Sherlock the ordinary way, and did a run of 6 or 12, it would have been over by now.  It would have been done because Martin and Benedict would never have been able to find the time, after the first [season].  It would be done.  This model of the TV series will happen again.  Because we all love it so much, this could go on for a very, very long time.  You’ll get to see an awful lot more of it.

Who says that the only way to make television is to make loads and loads of episodes for five years, until everybody is absolutely sick of it, particularly the people who are making it?  Who says that’s the only way you can do it?  There are other ways to make television.  I’ve heard so many American showrunners talk about the shorter run – which for them is 12 or 13, but that’s quite a long run for us – and that all you’re losing are the filler episodes, and I think that’s true.  I do think that sharpening the appetite and having shorter runs of more shows is a better way.  If you make a star of somebody, you have a chance of keeping them, if you’re not insisting that they work nine months of the year on your production.  It’s going to change.

There was some talk that another season could be on TV by Christmas.  Is that even possible?

Benedict Cumberbatch 'Almost Turned Down Sherlock'

Benedict Cumberbatch has almost turned down the lead role in BBC hit TV series Sherlock.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the show's third series on PBS in the United States, he admitted that he had "pause for thought" when first offered the part.

"My reservation was, 'Well, this is a very iconic character, there will be a lot of attention on it' - this was before I had had any significant success," he explained.

"I knew there would still be a lot of focus on it. And while I had done work, it wasn't stepping into the populist limelight like playing a character like Holmes."

He was eventually swayed by the passion of show-creators Steve Moffat and Mark Gattis – who also plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft in the show.

"I thought, 'If I'm going to do this - if I'm going to step into the limelight with a large leading role of iconic status - then I might as well do it with these people'," he said.

Sherlock resorts to extreme measures to defeat blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen in the series finale, His Last Vow.

[Warning - major spoilers] Steven Moffat provides a fitting ending to series three, as a twisting, intrigue-filled plot sees the defeat of one nemesis followed by the return of another.

‘I’m not a hero, I’m a high-functioning sociopath’

The first two episodes of this third series have proven divisive among the show’s fans, as more humour and the introduction of Mary marked a shift from plot-driven stories to more relationship-based ones.

Now we know why Moffat and Mark Gatiss pursued this route. The lightness of the opening episodes was needed to offset the darkness of the finale. Yes, there are humorous moments, but none of the whimsy particularly evident in The Sign of Three.

Ultimately Sherlock’s final, shocking act is a product of his vow at the Watsons’ wedding to always be there for them. It’s an indication of the extent of his friendship that he does not hesitate to sacrifice himself for them – an emotional reaction which neither Mycroft nor the pre-fall Sherlock could have countenanced.

The power of information

In many ways, the creepy and charmless Magnussen is an even more chilling nemesis than Moriarty, both being mirror images of what Sherlock might have become.

From his position as a media mogul, he acquires compromising evidence on people, which gives him the power and wealth to gain even more information and therefore influence. That’s a notion which strikes a chord with modern-day concerns about surveillance and personal data.

By contrast, John finds his power by burning the USB drive containing details of Mary’s past. In doing so, he unburdens them both.

For Magnussen, knowledge is power. For John, the absence of knowledge is freedom.

Sherlock creator Steven Moffat has been talking plot holes, the "lighter" series, and the dark turn it's going to take next week.

Some fans of the BBC drama have been disappointed with the more comedic approach from this third season.

If you're in this more serious camp, you'll be pleased to hear that the finale episode will see the arrival of Benedict Cumberbatch's worst villain yet.

Moffat spoke to Chris Evans on Radio 2 and warned, "We've been lighter this year, we're building to something darker and we're bringing on a cracking villain, Charles Augustus Magnussen."

Coming between Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch was "scary" : Sherlock's Amanda Abbington

When Sherlock returns to our screens in the coming months, its newest cast member may look familiar...

Amanda Abbington - the real-life partner of Martin Freeman - has confirmed she will play Mary Morstan, Dr Watson's fictional other half, when she appears in the third series of the BBC's detective drama. But when her casting was announced earlier this year, Abbington was subject to backlash from the show's ardent fanbase who have become rather attached to Freeman and co-star Benedict Cumberbatch's double act.

As series three inches closer, the Mr Selfridge actress has been talking about her experiences on set with Freeman and Cumberbatch, and the "scary" realisation that she would be coming between detective duo Sherlock and Watson...

"I remember doing a scene very early on with Martin and Ben, and I was standing in between them and I thought, 'I really have to up my game, this is proper'. They really bounce off each other," she told The Scotsman.

“When I was at the read-through, I remember watching them, and the chemistry between them is just amazing. They do have this beautiful relationship, so getting in between that – which is what Mary does, she becomes this kind of third wheel – was scary. Also, the fans love these two together, so I’m sure Mary won’t be particularly liked by them, but I hope that on the whole people really like her, because she’s a great character and she has some fantastic secrets.”

Abbington, who was recently on screens in BBC cop drama, Case Histories, also revealed that co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat wrote the part of Mary Morstan specifically for her:

“We were at Mark Gatiss’s house when The Hounds Of Baskerville first came on the telly," she recalled. "Afterwards they went into the kitchen and were sitting talking about the next series. I went in and sat with them. It had been mooted that I would be in it, might have a little part in it. They were talking about who might play Mary and I was like, ‘So, who are you thinking of?’ and they said ‘You’.”

Benedict Cumberbatch To Carry On Playing Sherlock 'Forever'?

Revealing that the actor and Martin Freeman, who plays his trusted sidekick Watson have already signed up for a fourth series, The Radio Times reported co-creator Steven Moffat saying:

"We had to inform the BBC that Martin and Benedict had commissioned a new series. They signed themselves up. They both announced that they were carrying on – so that’s good."

Claiming to know that Benedict who can currently be seen in the film, The Fifth Estate, is keen to carry on the role of the iconic Baker Street detective for as long as he possibly can, Moffat continued:

"Benedict, at some red carpet event somewhere, said he was carrying on forever. Martin, at another one, said, ‘Yep, series four is happening’."

Believing that the BBC won't turn down Benedict and Martin and their wishes to carry on filming the show, Moffat who also plays an important figure when it comes to the workings of Doctor Who, said:

"The BBC can do what they like. They're massively powerful, don't provoke them! But I assume that unless we've really screwed up Sherlock [series three] – which we haven't – it's a big success and it will carry on, so long as Benedict and Martin want to do it."

Meanwhile, Benedict has teased more details about how his character Sherlock faked his own death at the end of the last series of the hit BBC drama.

"Sherlock" season 3 may be near completion as far as filming, but director Jeremy Lovering reveals that, in typical Steven Moffat fashion, not all is what it seems.

"I think you've got a responsibility to the fan base," says Lovering during an interview with Flicks and the City. "[With 'Sherlock'], the fan base comes with it, and you kind of go, 'Shit, I've got to get this right.'"

"I love them, I absolutely love them," says Lovering regarding working with "Sherlock" co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

"Martin's comic timing a beyond second-to-none. Benedict is funny and brilliant, and there was moments where I felt genuinely, massively inspired."

Currently, "Sherlock" season 3 has Jeremy Lovering credited for filming the season premiere, "The Empty Hearse." "The Sigh of Three" is directed by Colm McCarthy, while "His Last Vow" is currently filming with Nick Hurran as director.

Steven Moffat says show could not continue without Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman!

Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have found global recognition, admiration and fame following the success of the hit BBC detective series, Sherlock.

Both have had their pick of prime time TV slots and Hollywood films since their casting, sparking fears that when the delayed third series was finally ready to start filming, both wouldn’t have the time or inclination to re-join the cast, dazzled too much by all the shiny new doors of opportunity currently piling up in front of them.

 Of course we had nothing to worry about as both actors are as much English gentlemen as their characters, which is one of the reasons they are both so well loved, and have since both come out to declare that they will stay loyal to the show and play the characters for as long as the show wants them too.

So, with that in the bag and the next two series already signed for, show runner Steven Moffat has now opened up admitting that the show actually couldn’t continue without either actor.

“Sherlock” Season 3 finally has an air date – or does it?

Kpopstarz reports that the air date for Season 3, Episode 1: “The Empty Hearse” is October 31, as shown on IMDB.

However, producer Sue Vertue said on Twitter that fans the date wasn’t completely set in stone yet.

A fan tweeted, “@suevertue @IMDb is listing #Sherlock Series 3 as airing 31 Oct. Truly or are they placeholding? #tenterhooks”

“@Glorious_Dawn @IMDb . Place holding!” Vertue responded.

Series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have spoken out about the much-anticipated episode, which they’ve promised will reveal how Sherlock survived his fall and apparent funeral in the Season 2 finale, as well as show Sherlock’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John’s (Martin Freeman) emotional reunion.

"It's a rational explanation," Moffat said, according to TV Guide. "When you see the answer, you'll see that yes, we did know in advance. We had to plot it out."

However, he added that the explanation is secondary to the emotional reunion between Sherlock and John, who believes that Sherlock is dead.

"That moment is quite electrifying," Gatiss said.

“It goes on and on. ... It's a long, complicated emotional journey and extremely funny,” Moffat added.

New 'Doctor Who': It's Peter Capaldi

The Scottish-born actor becomes the 12th actor to play the British sci-fi icon.

And the sonic screwdriver goes to Peter Capaldi.

The Scottish actor was named the new star of the British sci-fi franchise Doctor Who on Sunday during a live broadcast on BBC America. He will replace the departing Matt Smith, whose time in the time-traveling police box the TARDIS ends later this year.

"It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer," said Capaldi, a lifelong fan of the show. "I haven't played Doctor Who since I was 9 on the playground."

Capaldi, 55, becomes the 12th man to play the Doctor since the cult show debuted in 1963 with star William Hartnell and the fourth Time Lord since executive producer Russell T Davies rebooted Doctor Who in 2005, following Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Smith.

Executive producer Steven Moffat had considered Capaldi when they were casting the 11th Doctor. "There comes a right time for the right person to play it," he said.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Will Feature Matt Smith And David Tennant, Not All 11 Doctors: Will Moffat Use Old Footage? (KPOP STARZ)

Although "Doctor Who" creator Steven Moffat has already confirmed not all 11 Doctors will grace the 50th Anniversary Special, it still seems possible that a reunion of some sort will be illustrated this November.

"Although David Tennant has returned to his role of the Tenth Doctor, the other old Doctors will not be taking part," confirmed the Doctor Who Magazine.

And Steven Moffat gave a clear explanation of why that may be.

"We can't do 11 Doctors! Three of them are dead!" said Moffat to EW.

"What we're not doing is the traditional massive reunion. It's a different kind of anniversary, and the spine of that are David and Matt."

But, does this mean we won't see the faces of the 11 Doctors?
