Sherlock exhibition: Thousands of fans turn up to get a glimpse of star of hit show Benedict Cumberbatch

MIRROR
22:49, 27 April 2015
By Rod McPhee

The crowd surges, there’s an explosion of camera flashes and teenage girls scream their idol’s name.

Not Harry, or Zayn, or even Justin. The man they’re all here to see is Benedict Cumberbatch , star of BBC1’s cult hit Sherlock .

This is Sherlocked, the world’s first convention for fans of the show – which promises them a chance to meet their idol.

For the uninitiated, this level of hysteria for a 38-year-old actor may seem a mystery worthy of Holmes himself.

For the 6,000 self-styled Cumberbitches and Cumberboys who have turned up here, however, it’s elementary.

Many are dressed as their favourite cast member and are happy to shell out up to £45 for a photo with Sherlock himself.

Some cough up almost £3,000 for a VIP pass and think nothing of paying £30 for a scrap of wallpaper from the show’s set.

Others happily spend £500 for a pair of signed Sherlock and John Watson action figures and see nothing wrong with forking out £15 for a tea towel.

But since many have journeyed from one of the 200 countries where Sherlock is now broadcast, money is no object.

They simply want to submerge themselves in Cumberworld – and, as Benedict takes to the stage to address the convention, he seems genuinely thrilled to be joining them.

“Though I’ve got a microphone and I’m speaking to however many people, THIS is normal,” he beams, almost reassuring the crowd which is 80% female and 100% delirious.

“I’m not self-consciously walking through a shopping centre or an art gallery knowing that people are noticing me. I don’t think I’ll ever adjust to that.

“But being able to feel comfortable enough to speak to you now, to talk directly and honestly, it makes me feel like I’m the same person I was when all this began.”

His easy charisma seduces the audience during a question-and-answer session that is the highlight of the event.

As he delivers a couple of impressions – one of his dragon voice from The Hobbit movie, the other Chewbacca from Star Wars – even a couple of stray F-bombs can’t make Benedict’s devotees love him less.

But he may have upset a few audience members when he noted one special reason why Mr Cumberbatch and Mr Holmes are, in fact, two different people.

He says: “I don’t have the abilities that he does, I don’t have the same black curly hair he does, I don’t play the violin and I have a family on the way.”

Benedict, who wed theatre director Sophie Hunter, 37, in February, even teases his fans with a mention of his baby on the way later this year.

“I’m very excited,” he says, extracting a communal sigh from the audience. “I’m a bit busy at home at the moment, though not as busy as my wife, if you know what I mean.”

After the Q&A, besotted fans spend hours queuing just to get into another queue to get into yet another queue to have their photo taken with him.

Benedict Cumberbatch with his new friend

Sherlock star star Benedict Cumberbatch appears to be off the market - sparking horror amongst his legion of adoring female fans.

The actor has been spotted out in London twice this week with a mystery brunette, enjoying a play at the National Theatre and checking out a screening of Back To The Future at London’s latest fad Secret Cinema.

And the news has prompted uproar amongst his surprisingly obsessed female following - who imaginatively like to label themselves “Cumberbitches” - who quickly began spreading the news between themselves.

I’m told the star was even spotted dancing with his new squeeze as they enjoyed the movie at the Olympic Park in east London, where they were also joined by his Sherlock co-star Louise Brearley - known to fans of the show as Molly Hooper.

Benedict Cumberbatch gushes over his Cumberbitches’ support of the Princes Trust!

UNREALITY TV
August 1st, 2014 by Anna Howell.

Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch, has personally thanked his fans, the self-entitled Cumberbitches, for their efforts in helping support one of his favourite charities.

Cumberbatch, who stars in the title role of the hit BBC detective series which is a modern day twist on the original works of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, is an ambassador of The Prince’s Trust, the association formed by Charles, Prince of Wales back in 1976 to help young people.

Also an avid supporter of the Trust, Cumberbatch has been focussed on using his own profession to help groups involved such as Odd Arts, Anno’s Africa and Dramatic Need to name but a few. Since becoming patron, Cumberbatch has been involved in many of the Trust’s most admirable work, including presenting 85 young individuals with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at St. James Palace in 19 March 2014, as well as helping to run the fundraiser this year in honour of The Prince’s Trust.

Louise Brealey on kissing Cumberbatch

RADIO TIMES
Claire Webb
4:32 PM, 30 June 2014

Do you mind if I ask you about… “The Kiss?” Louise Brealey interrupts, before bursting out laughing. Clearly it’s a question she’s been asked before.

Brealey is best known as Molly Hooper in TV’s Sherlock, the timid pathologist hopelessly besotted with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baker Street detective, as played by Benedict Cumberbatch. The drama is a global phenomenon, its leading man a sex symbol and that kiss – when Molly’s dreams momentarily came true – a YouTube sensation.

In fact, there were four kisses. “I milked it!” she admits. “Afterwards, Ben and I watched it back on the monitor.” She adopts a Hollywood drawl. “‘Yup, that’s pretty hot.’ And of course it went completely crackers when the show came out. I got 7,000 Twitter followers within five minutes of that kiss airing. It had doubled by the time the episode ended.”

While the odd tweet seethed with jealousy, most were a virtual pat on the back. Brealey believes that’s because “Cumberbitches” – as members
of the Cumberbatch appreciation society like to call themselves – can identify with Molly. “She’s unthreatening.

She’s an ordinary woman experiencing the agony of unrequited love, and most of us have been there.”

Sherlockco-creator Steven
Moffat never intended Molly
to be a permanent fixture, but
Brealey’s performance persuaded him otherwise. Molly has also become a central character in fan fiction, with thousands of stories posted online. Brealey has only read one. “I just thought I was reading your average story and it turned into straddling and nipple-piercing!”

Growing up in Northampton, she was an academic child, the only one of her siblings that her parents could afford to send to “posh school”. So, while they left the local comprehensive at 16, she read history at Cambridge – a late applicant, it turns out. “When my dad found out I hadn’t applied, he hit the roof. I tried to explain to him I didn’t want to be an Oxbridge reject, but he said: ‘Tough s**t!’ And quite rightly, as it goes.”

Benedict Cumberbatch was spotted looking all handsome and Etonian on set of his new FBI movie Black Mass. Compare this to Johnny Depp, and see who's the hot one.

Benedict Cumberbatch was spotted on the set of his new movie Black Mass, looking ever so hot in his go-to look, a suit.

The British heartthrob may be off the market, but he's still doing what he does best, acting up a storm.

As usual he's looking all types of Etonian handsome.

Co-staring with Johnny Depp may have been a concern for any Cumberbitches arguing he's always the hottest guy on set.

Benedict Cumberbatch arrives in Boston, fans rejoice

THE BOSTON GLOBE
By Mark Shanahan and Meredith Goldstein  | GLOBE STAFF   JUNE 17, 2014

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is in Boston to take on the role of Billy Bulger in the adaptation of Dick Lehr and Gerry O’Neill’s book “Black Mass.” Cumberbatch, best known for his work in “Sherlock” (and for his wildly dedicated fan base) was spotted at Sonsie on Newbury Street on Monday night. He was also seen Monday morning by a super-fan who then went on Reddit and told her sighting story to more than 10,000 Cumberbatch lovers who have a group on the site called “Cumberbitches.” The fan, whose user name is VitalCapacity, says she was walking on G Street in South Boston when she saw Cumberbatch visit the set. She said, in her detailed report, “BLUE FRENCH OPEN HAT. THAT HAT. IN THE MINIVAN. BESIDE ME. And he gets out, and I just. lost. my. breath. . . . He is taller than I’d thought . . . and ripped. Like, really much more muscly than I was expecting — those arms! . . . And the arm veins were in Full Effect. Popping. There is not an ounce of fat on that man, it’s all muscle, sinew and wholesome goodness. (And the hat looks better in real life, too.)”

The girl who kissed Benedict Cumberbatch

INDEPENDENT
JULIA MOLONY – PUBLISHED 16 MARCH 2014 02:30 AM

YASMINE Akram's life has changed considerably since she snogged Benedict Cumberbatch on prime time telly. For one thing, she attracted the ire of the "Cumberbitches", the Sherlock actor's fanatical female admirers.

"I've had so many people threatening my life for kissing Benedict," Yasmine says, clearly disappointed that the attentions after her most high profile job to date haven't been more amorous. "That's all my love life has been – people having a go at me for kissing someone who was paid to kiss me."

It's funny what a guest slot on Sherlock can do. It's given Yasmine, previously best known for a small-ish one-woman play she wrote and starred in here in Ireland, a brush with international celebrity. But what it didn't deliver, unfortunately, was a boyfriend. "I remember saying to the girls when I was doing hair and make-up – this series is going to get me a boyfriend," she says.

But no. "I have never been so single," she faux-wails. It seems a ludicrous complaint, from one so gorgeous, but she is adamant. "I didn't even get a Valentine's card."

It’s Benedict Thumberbatch! ‘Cumberbitches’ have a field day with Cumberbatch swimming photo

METRO
Thursday 27 Feb 2014 4:30 pm

Benedict Cumberbatch has some of the most creative, and hilarious fans on the planet.

After a photo of the Sherlock star swimming appeared online, Benedict’s famous ‘Cumberbitches’ swiftly went to town.

The original photo can be found here.

1. Cumbertoise!

Cumberbatch like you've never seen him before...

2. Thumberbatch!

According to the Urban Dictionary, a Cumberbitch is ‘any woman who has a deep fasination with the wonderful, beautiful, talented English stage and on-screen actor Benedict Cumberbatch.’ The actor has previously spoken about the term, saying he wonders aloud if one can be a self-proclaimed ‘Cumberbitch’ and a ‘feminist’.

Why Benedict Is Wrong to Censor His Cumberbitches

HUFFPOST UK
Victoria Sadler
12/2/14

His fans just can't get enough of him. Only this week, after generating near hysteria with his appearance at the Elementary Con in Birmingham, over 22,000 devoted fans clamoured for only 200 available tickets to see Benedict Cumberbatch record the last episode of the popular BBC Radio 4 comedy Cabin Pressure.

And if that attention wasn't enough, a couple of days ago the actor was also reportedly chased down the streets of London by adoring (and a little misguided, it has to be said) fans after seeing a performance of the terrific Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse.

Still, the internet's favourite actor has been terribly gracious towards his fans, despite the fact that some of their behaviour must be unsettling at best and deeply worrying at worst (god help the poor woman who becomes his girlfriend). But one area that he has picked his devotees up on is their chosen name.

The Cumberbitches. That's what the most devoted fans called themselves. I actually liked it. I thought it was great word play, sharp, instantly recognisable and just a little bit in your face. And as soon as the term was coined, it went viral as quickly as 'credit crunch.'

It's a term that dwarfs all the other attempts (usually led by the stars themselves) to give fanbases catchy names, like Kylie's Lovers and Rihanna's Navy. Cumberbitches is right up there with Gaga's Monsters. The term is so good that the person behind it really should think about going into PR.

Only the actor himself was reluctant to be too supportive of the name. "It's not even politeness," he told Caitlin Moran in an interview for the Times. "I won't allow you to be my bitches. I think it sets feminism back so many notches. You are... Cumberpeople."

http://emmagrant01.tumblr.com/post/20211252317/cumberbitches-assemble

But Cumberpeople, and other alternatives generated by fans in the face of this censure such as Cumberfans, Cumberbabes, Cumbercollective... No, they're just not anywhere near as brilliant as Cumberbitches.

But more than this, why should the Cumberbitches redefine themselves because the object of their affection says so? And more importantly, why is it anti-feminist to call yourself a bitch?

Of course I'm in the realms of a circular argument here as if Mr Cumberbatch's remarkably fanatical following want to be his bitch then no doubt their willingness to do anything he says would extend to renaming themselves at his pleasure. But let's put that small technicality aside for one moment!

Whether you call them Cumberbitches, Cumberbabes or the Cumber Collective, the female fans of 'Sherlock' star Benedict Cumberbatch are legion

THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
By Molly Friedman

Maybe it’s his height — 6 feet. Or his gently tousled brown curls. An accent always helps — his is British.

“Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch has a wildly passionate underground fan network — known in various circles of the Internet as Cumberbitches, Cumberbabes or, more recently, the Cumber Collective — that has grown from its faint beginnings in the U.K. to include rabid fans all across the globe.

The Collective is buzzing as “Sherlock” begins its new season on Sunday on PBS.

“His cheekbones are striking,” says Park Slope entertainment writer Meghan O’Keefe, 28, who finds Cumberbatch’s unique looks to be part of his draw. “It’s like someone tried to draw a handsome face, but the eyes are a little too small, the cheekbones are too big, the mouth is too big.”

O’Keefe first fell for the 37-year-old Englishman after catching a second season episode of “Sherlock” — then discovering to her delight that Cumberbatch had done other things.

“I went through a two-week span of watching everything he had done,” says O’Keefe. “I became obsessed. I’m like, ‘This is ridiculous. Why am I not leaving the house?’ ”

Cumberbatch doesn't have typical movie star looks, but takes roles that make the geek girls melt: a villainous space general in “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the evil dragon in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and the idiot savant extraordinaire in “Sherlock.”

“I love the elegance of his hands, his rich baritone voice, his humility, his politeness,” says fan Lea Marie, 38. “This man would cause me to go from cruising down the road at about 55 to slamming on the brakes, taking a right-hand turn and flying at 100 miles an hour directly into the fandom known as the Cumber Collective.”

Hiddlestoners, Potterheads and the Cumbercollective: Film's most dedicated fandoms

Does Tom Hiddleston have the best fans?

Yahoo Movies
By Cat Collins | Yahoo UK Movies Features – 6 hours ago

While we admire their dedication, sometimes hardcore fans can be a little overwhelming.

For example, over 93,000 Batman fans who feel Ben Affleck is the wrong man to play Bruce Wayne have signed a Change.org petition to remove him from the role.

And Tom Hiddleston has said he's "flattered and amazed" by a group of Hiddlestoners who have decided he deserves his own solo superhero movie.

Saddened that Hiddleston won't appear in Joss Whedon's Avengers follow-up, and clearly concerned that we might never see Loki again, the fans have collected over 22,000 signatures petitioning Marvel for the God of Mischief to star in his own story on the big screen, steadily working toward their goal of 30,000.

But are Hiddlestoners the most dedicated fan base of them all? Let's see...

Hiddlestoners

Object of affection:
Tom Hiddleston

What's it all about?
Dedicated and determined, Tom Hiddleston obsessives are pretty hardcore in their love for the actor. After piquing their interest in Marvel's 2011 superhero epic, Thor, Hiddleston further seduced his legion of fans when he reprised the role of Loki in Joss Whedon's wildly successful team-up, Avengers Assemble.

But more than the standard group of swooning teenagers, Loki's Army have used their force for more than simply penning fanfic and stalking Hiddles on Twitter. One gang, Hiddlestoners Have Hearts, have even raised thousands of pounds for UNICEF in his name.

Don't say:
"Phwoar! That Thor's a bit of alright, isn't he?"

Do say:
"Oh my God, he's so adorable!"

Cumberbatch disapproves of Cumberbitches...

it's a revolution, I suppose·

The Cumbercollective

Object of affection:
Benedict Cumberbatch

What's it all about?
Formerly known as Cumberbitches or Cumberbabes, before Benedict himself poured disapproving scorn on the offensive noun, the lusty Cumbercollective have but one simple goal in mind: To meet Benedict Cumberbatch and make him fall in love with them.

It's a dream many can understand, albeit one the man himself seems to be a bit embarrassed by, but for most of them a dream it will remain. Luckily for them, he ain't going nowhere.

Don't say:
"You know what? I think Ricardo Montalban was a better Khan."

Do say:
"The Purple Shirt of Sex. That is all."

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'The Cumberbitches have got my back' if Julian Assange attacks Wikileaks film

The-Fifth-Estate.jpg

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
by Adam Markovitz on Aug 6, 2013 at 2:42PM   @amrkvtz

An ordinary person might understandably get jitters about playing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in a movie. After all, he’s a guy who has tussled with banks, political groups, and even governments and lived to tell the tale. But as any self-respecting Benedict Cumberbatch fan — or “Cumberbitch,” as some call themselves — knows, the Brit actor is anything but ordinary.

The Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star donned a series of white wigs and fake teeth to play Assange in The Fifth Estate (out Oct. 18), a drama that tracks Wikileaks’ rise to power. And he jokes that, thanks to his fans, he’s fully prepared for Assange to open fire. ”I’m sure he’ll go after me. … I’m not a bank with offshore accounts in the Canaries, I don’t fiddle my taxes, I’m not wanted for war crimes. If he goes after me, it’s going to be a waste of his extraordinary talent. But if he does, I kind of respect that because he needs to be able to answer back,” says Cumberbatch. “Anyway, the Cumberbitches have got my back, so I’ll be fine.”

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is a man in a world of boys (NOW MAGAZINE) LIZ HAMPTON

Benedict Cumberbatch was a slow burner for me.

Without the obvious chocolate-box looks of a Bradley Cooper, or the action man credentials of a Jason Statham, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.

But I have to say I am now tentatively applying for membership of the Cumberbitches.

Around about the mid-nineties, Hollywood hunks went from being real men with an underlying sense of menace and shedloads of life experience, to pampered, preened teens with no idea how to change a wheel or start a fire.

In other words, the men turned into boys.

I think it can be dated to around the time Robert De Niro started getting embarrassing dad roles, and Leonardo DiCaprio, with his little cutesy baby face, starred in Titanic and melted the hearts of a million teenage girls.

It is fair to say that Benedict is a return to the good old days of Hollywood.

The Sherlock star has had his fair share of adventures and has talked about hallucinating after getting lost for several days whilst trekking across Nepal.

He also had a brush with death after being carjacked in South Africa.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Top Fan Frown on 'Cumberb----es' By Meriah Doty (YAHOO)

Benedict Cumberbatch poses with fans at the UK Premiere of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (Photo: Getty)

You may be aware that "Star Trek Into Darkness" antihero Benedict Cumberbatch has a growing legion of fans. What you may not know is his devotees are distinctly fragmented between self-respecting Cumberfans and a group that has labeled themselves "Cumberb----es."

The latter group has a relatively popular Twitter account on which they have been defending their name following recent controversy.

Cumberbatch himself has recently piped up about the Cumber-"B"-word faction after having made light of their existence to other press outlets (including our own). He refuses to call them by their name and instead refers to them as the "Cumberwomen" or "Cumbergirls." "It's not even politeness," the 36-year-old actor told The Times of London. "I won't allow you to be my b----es. I think it sets feminism back so many notches. You are… Cumberpeople," he said.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s mum wants him to get married and he says he has new found respect for Star Trek! May 13th, 2013 by Anna Howell. (UNREALITY TV)

star-trek-poster

In a recent interview for the Times newspaper, Caitlin Moran was invited to have Sunday lunch with the BBC detective star and his parents, actors Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton.

During the chat Cumberbatch’s mum let a few of her sons secrets slip, including that she is desperate for him to get married so she can become a grandmother. She asked the reporter:
“Can you just find him a bird? There must be someone in London who’s suitable. I want grandchildren. Please – find my son a bird,”

Her son interjected that he was a late developer: “Very late, 15, 16 – maybe even 17.”

However, he insists that, despite his quirkiness, he was never subjected to bullies during his very public school upbringing, explaining:

“Because my parents loved the f***ing life out of me. So I felt confident about the world. Not entitled.. Just like… I could step into the world. Investigate it.”

Meanwhile Cumberbatch went on to use the opportunity to publicly slam the nickname given to his fans, saying that the term Cumberbitches “sets feminism back so many notches.”

He went on to explain:

“It’s not even politeness. “I won’t allow you to be my bitches. I think it sets feminism back so many notches. You are… Cumberpeople.”
