WATCH: Olivia Colman Unofficially Votes for David Tennant as the Next Prince Philip in ‘The Crown’

Anglophenia

BY BRIGID BROWN | 4 DAYS AGO

Olivia Colman is set to step in as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of The Crown, taking over for Claire Foy who is “reigning” over the series at the moment. This was all planned from the start, for a second actress to take on the later years of the Queen… a regeneration of sorts.

Speaking of which, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith currently portrays the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip. While it hasn’t been announced, his role will be swapped out, too. There’s a poll going on in the U.K., hosted by RadioTimes, and David Tennant is in the lead.

ou know, Tennant is also DW alum and he starred opposite Colman in BBC America’s Broadchurch.

She was chatting with the RadioTimes about starring in the forthcoming film Murder on the Orient Express (November 10) and the poll came up, with Colman responding in glee, “Oh can you imagine, how much fun!”

The Broadchurch star also threw in, “We’d never get anything done, we’d just chat all day. That would be heaven!”

Chester actor Tom Hughes has been spotted outside Beverley Minster in Yorkshire filming the next series of ITV hit show Victoria.

The former Upton-by-Chester High School student was seen giggling with fellow actor Jenna Coleman, who plays the eponymous role, as crowds gathered to glimpse the stars during filming.

The couple, who are in an off-screen as well as on-screen relationship, star as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the drama which reeled in 7.7 million viewers last year.

Tom, the patron of city youth theatre Jigsaw, brought Jenna to Chester over the Christmas period, and they were spotted walking in the centre of town on Boxing Day.

One onlooker said: “Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes were arm in arm as Victoria and Prince Albert, there was quite a bit of chemistry between them, they were looking at each other and laughing and giggling.

“They were rehearsing for the scene and kept coming out of the Minster to get into a carriage outside.

Sherlock writer says Benedict Cumberbatch 'doesn't need' the show now

BBC

Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch

The co-creator and writer of BBC One's Sherlock has told Newsbeat that it's getting harder to persuade Benedict Cumberbatch to do the show.

Steven Moffat says it's because Benedict and Martin Freeman - who plays Watson - don't need it.
They both have successful movie careers which means their schedules are packed.

"They don't need Sherlock anymore. So we have to persuade them to do it - which is fair enough," he says.

Speaking at the BAFTA Television Awards nominees party in London last night Steven Moffat says he was surprised they signed up to a fourth series.

"They are very serious about it, they do love it very much," he says.

"I didn't think we actually thought we'd get a fourth series out of them."

But he revealed this year's Christmas special has already been recorded and series four is expected at some point in the future - when it's been filmed.

Steven Moffat also writes and produces Doctor Who and says it's usual to have to persuade actors to do shows.

David Tennant, Catherine Tate ‘looking for projects together’

HYPABLE
Selina Wilken 7:08 am, November 28, 2014

Doctor Who actors David Tennant and Catherine Tate are looking for new projects to star in together – and we’ve got some suggestions!

Doctor-Donna fans, rejoice: former Time Lord David Tennant and his companion Catherine Tate want to find ways to keep working together.

“Working with David is the best,” Tate says in a webchat on The Guardian. “We get on so well and it’s just always so much fun.”

And Doctor Who isn’t their only joint venture so far: Tennant made several appearances on Tate’s The Catherine Tate Show, and the pair starred as the romantic leads in a 2011 stage production of Much Ado About Nothing.

Apparently, the pair like working together so much, Tate says they’re now “looking for future projects together.”

Tennant currently stars in Gracepoint, the Fox miniseries which may or may not be getting a second season.

In the webchat, Tate also puts another nail in the Donna Noble coffin, stating that it’s unlikely the character would be able to return following her tragic fate.

“Unfortunately I think Donna’s storyline would prevent her from coming back, because any memory of the Doctor, of her time travelling with him, and the adventures she embarked on, would kill her,” Tate writes. “So I can’t see a storyline being able to bring her back.”

But let’s talk about happier things: like what kind of joint ventures Tate and Tennant could embark on next!

Other than a joint comedy sketch series (or just a weekly fireside chat where they talk about life), here are some great buddy comedies just crying for a remake, and a few more timely suggestions:

1. ‘Bonnie and Clyde’
Tate and Tennant have played romantic leads before, so why not put a comedy spin on the classic tale of love and law-breaking? Sure, there was a miniseries in 2013, but that’s never stopped Hollywood before.

2. ‘Some Like It Hot’
If anyone could pull off a remake of this classic, it’s Tate as Marilyn Monroe, and Tennant dressed as a woman. Now we’d just need to find a third Doctor Who star to make up the trio… hmmm.

3. ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’
Make one of them a woman, and there you go. Cowboy era train robbery fun, but British. What could go wrong? (…Actually, probably everything. This is a terrible idea.)

Mark Gatiss: Great Documentary About Ghost Story Writer M.R. James From “Sherlock” Star/Creator

PATHEOS.COM
October 25, 2014 by Thomas L. McDonald

Writer/actor Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who, Sherlock, League of Gentlemen) writes and hosts this fine documentary on the greatest ghost story writer of them all: medievalist and Biblical scholar Montague Rhodes James. Special treats include locations from James stories (such as St Bertrand de Comminges, stuffed crocodile and all), a passing shot of a tombstone for “Mrs Mothersole” from his childhood home, some fantastic medieval illumination, and more. I have to give credit to Gatiss (who is himself gay) for exploring James’ sexuality while declining to impose modern ideas of homosexuality. (James is best described as wholly asexual.)

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on Peter Capaldi and Martin Freeman at the 2015 NTAs

RADIO TIMES
By Ben Dowell
Tuesday 14 October 2014 at 01:49PM

As voting opens on the National Television Awards 2015 longlist, there are more than enough mouth-watering tussles in prospect before the shortlist is announced in January.

First up is the battle of the Sherlock actors with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman joining a crowded field of fifty-plus hopefuls in the best drama performance category.

Other names in the frame include Peter Capaldi who is competing against Jenna Coleman – AKA the Doctor’s companion Clara Oswald – to make the shortlist for the same award. Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire, Cilla star Sheridan Smith and Last Tango in Halifax pair Sir Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid are also among the string of names in a particularly competitive longlist.

Another set of TV colleagues will be battling it out for the entertainment presenter prize with new Strictly Come Dancing pairing Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly among 24 nominees on the longlist. Also included is Daly’s husband Vernon Kay and Ant & Dec who have walked away with the award for the last 13 years.

Over in the drama category, Doctor Who and Sherlock are bidding for a nomination, up against Line of Duty, New Tricks, Downton Abbey and Happy Valley.

Keeley Hawes: TV's toughest detective

LONDON EVENING STANDARD
STEPHEN ARMSTRONG
Published: 18 September 2014

One of the downsides to being Keeley Hawes is getting pulled over by the police. At the end of last year, for instance, she was buying a burrito in Covent Garden when a burly squad in full blue serge piled out of a riot-proofed patrol van to confront her.

‘It looked like I was a major terrorist,’ she laughs. ‘But then they said, “Can we get a picture?” They all got out their handcuffs and posed. Eventually one said, “Come on, we’re going to lose our jobs.” ’ She laughs again. ‘Having said that, this was after Ashes to Ashes and before Line of Duty. I wonder what would happen now…’

It’s easy to see why the boys in blue love Keeley — she’s been adding glamour to the force as Zoe Reynolds in Spooks, Alex ‘Bollyknickers’ Drake in Ashes to Ashes and DSI Martha Lawson in ITV’s Identity. However, as the twisted, lonely DI Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty… well, not so much.

Line of Duty is all about dodgy cops — Jed Mercurio’s internal investigations thriller follows a fictional anti-corruption unit. Denton was its target in this year’s second season, suspected of having set up her colleagues in a fatal ambush. As suspicions mounted, Denton was bogwashed and beaten up by fellow officers, thrown in jail where wardens and inmates did the same, all along protesting her innocence and uncovering even bigger scandals. In terms of water-cooler moments, Line of Duty ranks alongside The Honourable Woman and The Fall as part of the new wave of Brit TV that’s finally making US producers jealous again.

And Hawes — like Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gillian Anderson in Woman and The Fall — was a revelation. She evoked such energy and raw emotion that even the disparaging TV critic AA Gill has put her among our best actresses, alongside Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.

Today, however, she’s just a 38-year-old Londoner. We meet at an outdoor restaurant near Richmond Park on one of the last sunny days of summer. She rummages through the menu, wondering about the healthy options. ‘I’ve got a shoot in a minute,’ she explains, before quickly adding, ‘I don’t feel the pressure any more, though. I honestly don’t give a shit. Two days of dieting isn’t going to happen. I have a ten-year-old daughter and I’ve got far too much responsibility to be seen to be picking around with bits of food.’

Who knew Keeley Hawes was a laugh? Any fears of an ice queen quickly melt away as she riffs on her Marylebone upbringing — riding around her council estate on the back of her brother’s Chopper, playing run-outs, and her mum shouting, ‘Dinner!’ across the blocks. Her dad and her two older brothers are cab drivers and she grew up near the Lisson Grove Estate, in a block that’s since become luxury flats.

If her accent seems a little crisp for a cabbie’s daughter, she points out, ‘I came from Central London, I wasn’t Cockney — my mother made sure we put the Ts on the end of words, and then I went to drama school.’ She pauses. ‘I do sound slightly posher, but listen, I’ve just been working with Tom Hiddleston and I feel very, very London talking to him.’

Next up there’s The Hollow Crown, the second part of the BBC’s ambitious attempt to screen all of Shakespeare’s history plays. She’s playing Queen Elizabeth in Henry VI part 2 and Richard III, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and, terrifyingly, Judi Dench. ‘I haven’t done Shakespeare and I’ve told them I can’t do Shakespeare and they still employed me.’ She seems amazed. ‘We’re rehearsing and I feel like I’m in safe hands, but still… I mean, I’ll be doing it with Judi Dench…’

She trails off, looking genuinely worried, so I leaf through my notes, pull out the AA Gill quote comparing her to Dench and read it to her: ‘Hawes is one of a number of very good female actors we have, from Judi Dench and Maggie Smith down,’ I read. She is momentarily stunned, then her face flushes a deep, deep crimson and she stares at her hands.

‘Well, that’s ridiculous,’ she mumbles. ‘I mean, I don’t even know what to say about that…’ and then she thinks it through. ‘Although he doesn’t say exactly how far down, does he?’ and she looks up, her impish grin returning. ‘I’d say it was fairly far down — but I’d still put that in a frame…’ When it’s time for her to leave, I make a joke about her receiving an honour to match Maggie and Judi and she turns back briefly — ‘Dame Keeley…? I can’t quite hear a copper calling me that.’

Doctor Who is on BBC One Saturday night at 7.30pm

David Tennant, Anna Gunn interview on making 'Gracepoint'

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
By James Hibberd on Sep 15, 2014 at 3:46PM   @james_hibberd

GRACEPOINT

Imagine if a Time Lord and Skyler White teamed to solve a young boy’s murder in a small Northern California town? That’s what it’s like for fans of Doctor Who and Breaking Bad approaching Fox’s Gracepoint, which takes David Tennant and Anna Gunn, beloved for playing for iconic cable TV roles, and puts them into a big broadcast prime-time crime series. For Tennant, the role means embracing the unusual, perhaps unprecedented, step of reprising the same character he played in Broadchuch, the U.K. version of the show (though Fox has added a different ending for Gracepoint). For Gunn, it means leaving behind an Emmy-winning performance of a tightly-wound character that was both career-making and fan-divisive. Below the actors take our questions about Gracepoint, which debuts on Fox on Oct. 2.

EW: Let’s start before Broadchurch. What was each of your all-time favorite mystery show?

ANNA GUNN: We always said Cagney & Lacey was our inspiration. That was something that made us laugh nonstop, not because this is like Cagney & Lacey, though we could be a team like that—

DAVID TENNANT: And I’m playing Tyne Daly.

GUNN: Yeah, I’m the blonde and you’re the brunette. So that’s my ridiculous answer.

TENNANT: I’d go with Murder One. That was such a novelty because it was one story told over a number of episodes, like Gracepoint.

GUNN: That was great.

Is there anything you see actors doing in detective shows that you tried to avoid?
GUNN: I interviewed a couple different people and went on a ride-along. They pointed out clichéd things on TV shows, and I think the major thing for me was that so much of being a good detective is watching and listening very carefully and less about putting overt pressure on a suspect. It’s not really the way that’s done in the real world. So much of it was really about watching and listening and being an observer rather than cliché about the hard-boiled detective strong-arming anybody.

TENNANT: Because the story is as much an emotional story as it is a procedural story, and as much about people as murder, hopefully you avoid cliché by being true to that emotional life.

Anna, had you seen the original before you started on Gracepoint?

GUNN: I saw the original and was just head over heels for it. It was brilliant. I know that some of the actors did not watch it because they didn’t necessarily want to be influenced, and was a little worried about having somebody else’s brilliant performance hanging in your head. But in this case [Broadchurch co-star] Olivia Colman and I are so different from each other and I thought it would serve me to watch it. Plus I was just intrigued and I’m really glad I did watch it because its a good show and just watching the choices she made was very helpful for me. It informed a lot of the things I ended up doing.

The American reimagining of ITV's Broadchurch will feature Tennant as Detective Emmet Carver, an out-of-towner whose new job takes him to a small California coastal town and pairs him up with Detective Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn). Together, the two must solve the mystery of a young boy's death while the entire town falls suspect.

"Gracepoint is, more than anything else, a whodunit," explained executive producer Dan Futterman in a new featurette. "You learn who everybody is in the town and how they're related to each other. Can you spot the Broadchurch series two clue hidden in the new novel?

The secrets of Broadchurch series two are being kept firmly under lock and key on the Dorset set of the ITV drama.

With only a handful of people party to what the return of David Tennant and Olivia Colman will entail, Broadchurch's loyal audience have flocked to forums, fan sites and social media to speculate upon just what writer Chris Chibnall has been
cooking up.

The bad news is he's refusing to dish the dirt until series two comes to our tellys - likely to be some time in early 2015 - but he has hidden a tantalising clue in a new novel he's commissioned, written by Erin Kelly and based on his Bafta-winning series.

"About three days before we went to press, Chris put in one tiny little clue about something that happens in series two," she reveals. "He asked me to add it in, literally just as we had the proof all laid out ready to go to press.
