Olivia Colman is set to step in as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of The Crown, taking over for Claire Foy who is “reigning” over the series at the moment. This was all planned from the start, for a second actress to take on the later years of the Queen… a regeneration of sorts.

Speaking of which, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith currently portrays the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip. While it hasn’t been announced, his role will be swapped out, too. There’s a poll going on in the U.K., hosted by RadioTimes, and David Tennant is in the lead.

ou know, Tennant is also DW alum and he starred opposite Colman in BBC America’s Broadchurch.

She was chatting with the RadioTimes about starring in the forthcoming film Murder on the Orient Express (November 10) and the poll came up, with Colman responding in glee, “Oh can you imagine, how much fun!”

The Broadchurch star also threw in, “We’d never get anything done, we’d just chat all day. That would be heaven!”

Depp, Dench and Kenneth Branagh: Behind the scenes of the star-studded Murder on the Orient Express

Agatha Christie ‘had always been allergic’ to cinema adaptations of her books, her husband Max Mallowan was quoted as saying. ‘She didn’t like her characters to be portrayed on book covers either,’ says James Prichard, her great-grandson.

Christie, who wrote 66 detective novels between 1920 and 1976, translated into around 45 languages, is the most widely read novelist in history, with sales of more than two billion copies worldwide.

There have been 23 film adaptations of her books in the UK alone, not to mention the multiple TV series. And now we have Murder on the Orient Express. Directed by Kenneth Branagh (who also plays Belgian detective Hercule Poirot), it features a parade of towering greats from stage and screen including Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench and Derek Jacobi.

The 2017 version, co-produced by Ridley Scott, with a screenplay by Michael Green (the writer of Blade Runner 2049 and Alien: Covenant)  sets up the classic whodunnit with 14 strangers boarding the long-distance  passenger train that connects Istanbul with Paris.

These include Caroline Hubbard, an American widow (Michelle Pfeiffer), the Russian Princess Dragomiroff (Judi Dench) and her maid, Hildegarde Schmidt (Olivia Colman).

A businessman named Ratchett (Johnny Depp) is murdered at night in the compartment next to Poirot. The train gets marooned in an avalanche (a snowdrift in the book) and the plot follows Poirot’s interrogation of each of the passengers in the hunt for the killer.

The appeal of the film is clear: stars are not being asked to play anything run-of-the-mill. They are showcased in sumptuous 1930s glamour, dressing for dinner (even on a train), and the cooks produce delicious  fancies such as walnut soufflés.

‘I liked the sense that I could let the audience escape into that world,’ says Branagh, ‘where the details of what the characters are touching, seeing, eating, drinking, wearing are a significant part of the pleasure.

‘We live in a world where everything is so transient and quick, it  seemed to me a period in which, from a piece of linen to a glass of water to an arrangement of flowers, there could be a way of evoking a parenthesis of calm in an incredibly rushed life.’

An ‘avid reader of crime fiction’, he last read the book years ago, but admits to being surprised when he reread it. ‘I’d forgotten how it worked out! ‘I liked the ensemble [nature] of it,’ he continues, ‘I like it being enclosed in snow, the claustrophobia. And it’s a tale that sums up the golden age of travel: a world in which you feel the miles under your feet.

ALL ABOARD! AND WE MEAN ALL ABOARD! A GOODLY portion of planet Earth's most famous residents have gathered today at Longcross Studios outside London to shoot a scene set at Stamboul (now Istanbul) train station for director Sir Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express (out Nov. 10).

Branagh, who also plays Christie's famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, is present and properly dressed in 1930s-era attire. So too are Star Wars heroine Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Willem Dafoe, Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr., and British acting royalty Dame Judi Dench and Sir Derek Jacobi.

 There's more. In one corner of the soundstage, Josh Gad and Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) are discussing the Police Academy franchise; Penélope Cruz is gliding past the re-creation of a vintage train talking on her phone in Spanish; and Johnny Depp is ruminating to a reporter about the likelihood of his character's long brown coat being made out of leather. "I'm feeling like it's fake," he says—incorrectly, as the film's Oscar-winning costume designer, Alexandra Byrne (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), will later attest. But the most eye-catching sight is not a person but a thing: the fake mustache sported by Branagh.

The item is so extravagantly outsize it almost seems more alien face-hugger than facial fuzz. "When I saw it I was like, Holy moly!" says Ridley. "But this is a larger-than-life story, so why not make the mustache larger, too?"

The Night Manager seasons 2: Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman reportedly 'bac

Fans of Tom Hiddleston’s extended James Bond audition - AKA The Night Manager - have been pining for a sequel ever since the BBC show finished airing last year.

Earlier this month, director Susanne Bier confirmed a second series is "slowly being developed,” saying:  "We all very much want to do a season two, but the thing we absolutely do not want is to do something that does not live up to the level of season one. That would be a really bad idea.”

New reports claim Hiddleston - along with co-stars Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman - have signed up for another series, an insider telling The Daily Express they producers are “just working on the story, and then it’s down to availability.”

Actors Olivia Colman and David Tennant are in Bristol today, Friday, filming scenes for the upcoming series of ITV crime drama Broadchurch.

The stars of the slow-burning murder mystery were pictured between takes at the entrance to Mail Handling International in Feeder Road, in the industrial eastern side of the city centre.

It is the third series of Broadchurch, which is actually set on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset with the coastal resort of Bridport effectively playing the title town.

Four More Join Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie in The Night Manager

British actors David Harewood (“Homeland”), Neil Morrissey (“Line of Duty”), Katherine Kelly (“Mr Selfridge”) and Tobias Menzies (“The Honorable Woman”) have been announced to join the star-studded cast of the television adaptation of John le Carré’s novel “The Night Manager,” which started filming last month.

Co-produced by AMC with BBC One and The Ink Factory, the latest names to feature in the international production join previously-announced stars Hugh Laurie (“House”), Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), Olivia Colman (“Broadchurch”), Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) and Academy Award-winning director Susanne Bier (In a Better World).

Harewood is most well-known for his role in Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning drama “Homeland,” whilst Morrissey was recently featured in BAFTA-nominated drama “Line of Duty.” Kelly starred in two series of Emmy-nominated British drama “Mr Selfridge,” and Menzies has made a name for himself in Golden Globe-winning drama “The Honorable Woman” and Emmy Award-winning series “Game of Thrones.”

Other names announced to appear in the espionage drama include BAFTA nominees Adeel Akhtar (“Utopia”) and Natasha Little (“Wolf Hall”), as well as Jonathan Aris (“Sherlock”) and Hannah Steele (“Wolf Hall”).

A contemporary interpretation of le Carré’s 1993 novel – and the first television adaptation of a le Carré novel in more than 20 years – “The Night Manager” mini-series will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality. The series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) who is recruited by an intelligence operative named Burr (Colman) to navigate the shadowy recesses of Whitehall and Washington where an unholy alliance operates between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade. To infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie), which includes girlfriend Jed (Debicki) and an associate named Corcoran (Hollander), Pine must himself become a criminal.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman lead acting nominations at BAFTA TV Awards... as X Factor is snubbed in the Entertainment category

He missed out on the Academy Award for Best Actor during this year's awards season.
But Benedict Cumberbatch is now in the running to pick up a TV BAFTA for his performance as the master detective Sherlock Holmes, arguably his most famous role of all.

The star, who lost out on a Best Actor Oscar earlier this year for his portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, is nominated for the Leading Actor prize at the House Of Fraser BAFTA Television Awards, which will take place on May 10.

However, he faces stiff competition from the esteemed likes of Toby Jones for Marvellous, James Nesbitt for The Missing and Jason Watkins for The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jefferies.
It is the third nomination for Benedict's performance in the hit show, a modern day re-imagining of the beloved detective who lives on Baker Street, but he has yet to take home the title.

Seasoned BAFTA TV winner Olivia Colman - who has three BAFTA wins under her esteemed belt - has received yet another nomination, this time in the Female Performance In A Comedy Programme category for Rev.

Nominated for the fourth consecutive year, she'll be up against the incredible talents of Tamsin Greig in Episodes, Jessica Hynes in W1A and Catherine Tate for Catherine Tate's Nan.

The actresses nominated in the Leading Actress category are Line Of Duty star Keely Hawes, Sheridan Smith for Cilla, Sarah Lancashire for Happy Valley and Georgina Campbell who starred in Murdered By My Boyfriend.

The nominations were announced at BAFTA’s central London headquarters by actors Freddie Fox and Sherlock star Amanda Abbington.

Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie scale the Matterhorn for The Night Manager

Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie have begun their ascent of John le Carré's The Night Manager in the Swiss Alps – with the dramatic peak of the Matterhorn as picturesque backdrop.

The BBC drama of the same name is a six-part adaptation of the espionage novel. Along with Hiddleston and Laurie, Rev stars Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander will reunite for the BBC/AMC co-production.

The Night Manager tells the story of British soldier Jonathan Price (Hiddleston) who is on a mission to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie). The series was announced last October, with stars Hiddleston and Laurie confirmed in January 2015.

AMC, BBC One and The Ink Factory announced Thursday that she, Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander are joining the cast of the espionage drama starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie.



This is the first adaption of the novel by John le Carré in more than 20 years. The story follows a former soldier and night manager of a European hotel (Hiddleston) called upon by an intelligence operative (Colman) to infiltrate the network of an international arms dealer (Laurie).

Our Night Out With Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill Emilia Fox And Natalie Dormer At The BAFTA Gala Dinner

We hung out with some very dishy Brits in black tie last night - including Tom Hiddleston, Kit Harrington, Freddie Fox and Henry Cavill - at the very first BAFTA Gala Dinner, in aid of BAFTA's Give Something Back campaign. Freddie Fox arrived arm-in-arm with big sister Emilia, who was wearing a floor-length scarlet Temperley London dress, while a very dapper-looking Tom Hiddleston swept in and caught up with friend Edith Bowman. We also spotted Game Of Thrones stars Kit Harrington and Natalie Dormer, who was looking gorgeous in a black ballgown.

The night began with a champagne and canapé reception in the bar upstairs, before guests headed down for a three-course dinner of (delicious) smoked salmon tartare, cumin and coriander rump of lamb and chocolate tart. After dinner the live charity auction began where some of the more deep-pocketed guests bid on a range of treats.

The list of prizes included a photo shoot with top photographer Greg Williams (who had come to the event with his new girlfriend, designer Alice Temperley), a private preview screening for 60 people of the new Bond film Spectre and dinner with Colin Firth and Damien Lewis (this one went for £12 000 - sadly a little out of our budget). Also up for grabs was a private tour of Downton Abbey and a week-long retreat at a villa in Palm Springs. Tom Hiddleston gamely kicked off the action by bidding £2000 for a portrait from Greg Williams, but lost out in the end to a higher offer. By the end of the night £250 000 had been raised. That's a lot of very generous bidding.

Keeley Hawes: There is life in TV for mature women

Keeley Hawes is a woman whose time has come. Or to put it less dramatically, the actress who starred in Ashes to Ashes, Line of Duty and Upstairs Downstairs has come of age.

This might seem a strange thing to say, given that she has been on our screens since her mid-teens, when she appeared in the likes of Dennis Potter’s Karaoke. But as Hawes herself points out, there has never been a better time to be an actress of certain years.

Hawes, who turns 39 next month, said: “I think that you only have to look at our TV screens at the moment to see maybe there is a change happening, with Olivia Colman in Broadchurch, Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Honourable Woman and Gillian Anderson in The Fall. These aren’t 20-year-olds. These are women with a bit of life experience.”

Her success in roles more suited to mature women than flighty teenagers or sultry twentysomethings – such as the hard-bitten and explosively violent policewoman Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton in BBC2’s Line of Duty – means she is less minded to complain about the parts offered to older actresses.

In an interview in next week’s Stella magazine, she says: “It would be an odd thing for me to bitch about, to be honest. And if that makes me not very feminist…”

But, she adds quickly: “I am a feminist, but I can’t bitch about something that I haven’t directly experienced. Of course, there are a lot of window-dressing roles and you make the best of what you can out of that. You are not going to turn work down when you have a family, when you have bills to pay, and you have to work. It would be all well and good to say, 'I’m not going to work unless it’s some big meaty part,’ but you would sit there for ever. You would be down the dole office.”

Her ability to accept “window-dressing roles” with grace, while excelling in more demanding parts, has made her one of the industry’s most appreciated figures, with fellow actors, directors and producers describing her as friendly, professional and modest.

It also means Hawes has been happy to play parts that do not call for a waif-like physique yet require some dressing down on the part of a naturally striking woman, such as the frumpy DI Denton.

“I’m not a size eight. I never have been,” she says. “In my youth I was somebody who didn’t leave home without a bit of mascara. That’s all out the window now; I am not that person. I’ve got three children and I really don’t care.”

Her ability to immerse herself in the decidedly unglamorous aspect of her roles can take those behind the camera by surprise.

She said: “I was asked to do a role once where I would have had to have worn really bad false teeth. The director literally couldn’t believe that I wouldn’t get there on the day and say, 'No, actually, forget it.’ But I couldn’t wait to not have any make-up. My vanity left me a long time ago.”

Two teaser clips for Broadchurch series two have aired on ITV ahead of the hit crime drama's hotly-anticipated return.

Shown during The X Factor results show on Sunday night, the 20-second trailers give little away bar a glimpse of stormy seas, an unspecified coastline and mysterious phrase "The end is where it begins".

David Tennant and Olivia Colman are confirmed to reprise their lead roles as detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, alongside fellow returning actors Andrew Buchan, Jodie Whittaker and Arthur Darvill.

New cast members for the second run will include Charlotte Rampling, Meera Syal, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James D'Arcy and Eve Myles.

Imagine if a Time Lord and Skyler White teamed to solve a young boy’s murder in a small Northern California town? That’s what it’s like for fans of Doctor Who and Breaking Bad approaching Fox’s Gracepoint, which takes David Tennant and Anna Gunn, beloved for playing for iconic cable TV roles, and puts them into a big broadcast prime-time crime series. For Tennant, the role means embracing the unusual, perhaps unprecedented, step of reprising the same character he played in Broadchuch, the U.K. version of the show (though Fox has added a different ending for Gracepoint). For Gunn, it means leaving behind an Emmy-winning performance of a tightly-wound character that was both career-making and fan-divisive. Below the actors take our questions about Gracepoint, which debuts on Fox on Oct. 2.

EW: Let’s start before Broadchurch. What was each of your all-time favorite mystery show?

ANNA GUNN: We always said Cagney & Lacey was our inspiration. That was something that made us laugh nonstop, not because this is like Cagney & Lacey, though we could be a team like that—

DAVID TENNANT: And I’m playing Tyne Daly.

GUNN: Yeah, I’m the blonde and you’re the brunette. So that’s my ridiculous answer.

TENNANT: I’d go with Murder One. That was such a novelty because it was one story told over a number of episodes, like Gracepoint.

GUNN: That was great.

Is there anything you see actors doing in detective shows that you tried to avoid?
GUNN: I interviewed a couple different people and went on a ride-along. They pointed out clichéd things on TV shows, and I think the major thing for me was that so much of being a good detective is watching and listening very carefully and less about putting overt pressure on a suspect. It’s not really the way that’s done in the real world. So much of it was really about watching and listening and being an observer rather than cliché about the hard-boiled detective strong-arming anybody.

TENNANT: Because the story is as much an emotional story as it is a procedural story, and as much about people as murder, hopefully you avoid cliché by being true to that emotional life.

Anna, had you seen the original before you started on Gracepoint?

GUNN: I saw the original and was just head over heels for it. It was brilliant. I know that some of the actors did not watch it because they didn’t necessarily want to be influenced, and was a little worried about having somebody else’s brilliant performance hanging in your head. But in this case [Broadchurch co-star] Olivia Colman and I are so different from each other and I thought it would serve me to watch it. Plus I was just intrigued and I’m really glad I did watch it because its a good show and just watching the choices she made was very helpful for me. It informed a lot of the things I ended up doing.

Hugh Bonneville: BBC2 mockumentary W1A to return in 2015

BBC mockumentary W1A is to return for a second series next year with Hugh Bonneville’s head of values, Ian Fletcher, facing the thorny issue of the corporation’s charter renewal.

Downton Abbey star Bonneville has signed up for another outing of the follow-up to writer John Morton’s acclaimed Olympics comedy Twenty Twelve.

The new four-part series of W1A will begin with a 60-minute episode, followed by three 30-minute ones. It is being produced by BBC in-house comedy.

After the success of the first series of W1A – which featured BBC presenter Clare Balding and creative director Alan Yentob and drew 1.6 million viewers for its opening episode on BBC2 – the corporation was keen to let the cameras into New Broadcasting House for a second time.

Further casting details, storylines and cameos are still being discussed.

Jessica Hynes and Olivia Coleman, fleetingly, reprised their Twenty Twelve roles in W1A. There was speculation that BBC director general Tony Hall – referred to as “Tonyship, Lord director general” in the show – might appear in future episodes.

The BBC said in a statement on Monday: “Until the cameras roll it won’t be known exactly what crisis will be averted or indeed where Ian’s desk will be.”

However, in the second series there is an indication that charter renewal will be covered as the BBC added that “with charter renewal in 2016 getting ever closer, Ian’s job as Chair of the Way Ahead Task Force will be even more important than ever”.

The secrets of Broadchurch series two are being kept firmly under lock and key on the Dorset set of the ITV drama.

With only a handful of people party to what the return of David Tennant and Olivia Colman will entail, Broadchurch's loyal audience have flocked to forums, fan sites and social media to speculate upon just what writer Chris Chibnall has been
cooking up.

The bad news is he's refusing to dish the dirt until series two comes to our tellys - likely to be some time in early 2015 - but he has hidden a tantalising clue in a new novel he's commissioned, written by Erin Kelly and based on his Bafta-winning series.

"About three days before we went to press, Chris put in one tiny little clue about something that happens in series two," she reveals. "He asked me to add it in, literally just as we had the proof all laid out ready to go to press.

The pair - who played DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller - will be be back for a new instalment of the ITV murder mystery, following the success of last year's series, which garnered more than nine million viewers.

The crime-solving duo will be joined by Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan, who starred as the parents of murdered schoolboy Danny Latimer, and Arthur Darvill who will reprise his role at Reverend Paul Coates.

The second series, which is set to begin filming in Dorset, has been penned by Chris Chibnall, who both created and wrote the first series.

David Tennant and Olivia Colman will return for the second series of 'Broadchurch', according to actress Jodie Whittaker, but the rest of the cast are being kept in the dark about their future.

Jodie Whittaker, who played grieving mother Beth Latimer in the first series of the murder mystery drama, says the two lead stars will both be back for the ITV show's second series - but the rest of the cast have been left in the dark about their future.

She exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "David and Olivia will obviously be in season two. It doesn't shoot for a few months, I think - middle of the summer sometime.

"None of us know if we're in it, or if we're not in it. It was exciting and wonderful to be a part of, I really enjoyed it, so there's no part of me that wouldn't do it if I was asked."

The 32-year-old actress has also defended the upcoming US remake of the drama - titled 'Gracepoint' - which will see David reprise his role as TV detective Alec Hardy.

David Tennant: Broadchurch picks up top drama title at South Bank Awards

Crime drama Broadchurch has picked up the top drama award at last night's South Bank Sky Arts Awards.

The whodunnit – which starred David Tennant and Olivia Colman and screened on STV last March – collected the title of Best TV Drama at the ceremony, held at The Dorchester Hotel in London's Park Lane.

Also nominated in the same category were Top of the Lake and The Fall, but it was the cast and crew of Broadchurch who were smiling the widest at the end of the night.

Sky News quoted Colman as saying: "I'm excited. Ready to get on the booze!”

She went on to add: “Being in a room with these people who I consider so magical compared to us – no offence to actors, but, Darcey Bussell was here and there was clip of what she can do with her legs – it's humbling.

“Musicians and artists, it's exciting that we're all there and that we've had an impact on people's lives and they enjoyed what we did."

Tom Hardy Drives a Car For 85 Minutes, And It's Mesmerizing

There are worse places to spend 85 minutes than inside a car with Tom Hardy, even he ignores you the entire time to make calls on speakerphone. This lesson comes courtesy of Steven Knight’s experimental Sundance entry Locke, during which Hardy does just that in real time without ever exiting his vehicle or speaking to another person face-to-face.

And despite those somewhat extreme constraints, the drama is compelling, genuinely moving, and suspenseful. It's a singular achievement for Knight, who also wrote the drama’s measured script, and Hardy, who manages to propel the story forward even though his butt is planted in the same position for an hour and a half.

The film opens on Hardy, a construction manager named Ivan Locke, as he steps into his BMW S.U.V. and leaves a work site. During each phone call Locke makes, the audience slowly discovers more about Hardy and his late-night excursion via trickles of exposition. Knight carefully unfurls more stakes about why Hardy’s car ride is so urgent, why his family is so disappointed in him, and why the timing of his trip is so damning for his construction company.

As the pressure on Hardy’s character mounts, the actor never resorts to showing his stress by going Nic Cage on us—raising his voice, banging on a steering wheel, or flipping off speeding passersby. Instead, he speaks in a Welsh accent so lilting and soothing that we would personally request it for our iOS if we lived in a future Her-type universe that allowed us to make these kinds of decisions. Even though he maintains composure (for the most part), and his position at the wheel for the entirety of the movie, Hardy, with Knight's direction, is able to summon legitimate suspense thanks to the script’s snaking personal revelations, which are masterfully laid out.
