Tom Hiddleston: ‘The Night Manager’ Ratings Score Best Ever Debut Live + 3 Rises For AMC

DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD
by Dominic Patten

AMC definitely chose a gilded sword to pierce into Tuesday nights and The Night Manager looks to have done been up to the job. In Live + 3 results, the April 19 debut of the Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston starring co-production with the BBC delivered the cabler a total viewership of 1.6 million with 455,000 among adults 18-49 and 554,000 among the 25-54 demo.

In what is the biggest jump an AMC show debut has ever had, that’s a surge of 70% in total viewership over the Live + Same Day audience that the first episode of the Susanne Bier directed 6-part TNM snagged. Looking at the two demos, which also are record breaking jumps percentage-wise, TNM was up 72% over L+SD in the 18-49s and 73% in the 25-54s.

Let Tom Hiddleston Seduce You: ‘The Night Manager’ Is the Best Bond Audition Yet

THE DAILY BEAST
Kevin Fallon
April 19, 2016

There’s a scene late in AMC’s sexy spy thriller The Night Manager in which star Tom Hiddleston,
tailored to a swoon in a bespoke suit, suavely gestures to the barkeep and orders a drink: “Excuse me, sir, could I have a vodka martini, please?”

After the miniseries run of The Night Manager, a slick and highly entertaining cat-and-mouse romp (but mostly a six-episode Tom Hiddleston audition to be the next James Bond), it’s a wonder that our dashing hero doesn’t freeze in the frame right there, as whimsical animations take over the screen to the tune of a Shirley Bassey torch song.

Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager

That’s not a spoiler. It might be an endorsement.

We meet Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a former soldier and the best damned night manager at a Cairo hotel you’ve ever met.

He encounters the mistress of a corrupt member of Egypt’s most powerful family. He senses she’s in danger. They fall, with the swiftness of 007 in pheromone-sniffing distance of a leggy blonde, in love—and in bed. And you know the rule about the first Bond Girl: tragedy ensues.

Quickly, he finds himself entrenched in an undercover mission to bring down the man responsible, an English billionaire named Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), a corrupt arms dealer in the costume of a wealthy philanthropist.

Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie Talk Their Deadly But Charming Face-Off

Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie in ‘The Night Manager’

“I don’t know that I’d make a very good spy,” says Tom Hiddleston. This, from a man widely spoken of as the next James Bond. We’re discussing his latest role in the AMC miniseries The Night Manager, based on John le Carré’s 1993 novel, premiering April 19. Hiddleston plays Jonathan Pine, an unassuming hotel supervisor who turns out to be a very, very good spy. So much so that he’s recruited by British Intelligence to bring down international arms dealer and billionaire Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).

Hiddleston gives the spy question a little more thought — he gives everything a lot of thought — and then he laughs. “Let’s be honest, I’d make a hopeless spy because people know who I am. It would be very obvious.”

That much is indisputable: these days Tom Hiddleston couldn’t exactly sidle in to a room and order a smoothie. Thanks to roles as Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, the lead in the excellent High-Rise, and most of all as Loki in the ongoing, seemingly neverending Avengers franchise, Hiddleston is already that guy on the poster. But it’s Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager — well-turned-out, well-spoken, intelligent but reserved — whom he feels is closest to himself. Even if he could never be a spy.

“Pine felt strangely new for me as an actor because it felt quite close to home — I haven’t played close to home. I’ve played at the extremes of my range — Loki and Hank Williams are quite far away from me,” he says. “With Pine, there was a lot in him that I could relate to. It was something about his moral conviction. His private soul. He’s very hard — he keeps his cards close to his chest, and I think that’s very true of me.”

Ying to Pine’s yang is Richard Roper, and in an inspired piece of casting, The Night Manager pairs off Hiddleston with fellow debonair Brit Hugh Laurie. If Dr. Gregory House behaved badly but was essentially good, “Dickie Roper” is the other way ‘round. He starts out a wellspring of urbane charm, but a few episodes in, as we start to see what those weapons he’s selling to the highest bidder can do, we understand why le Carré in the original novel labeled Roper “The Worst Man in the World.”

Tom HIddleston: AMC Secures U.S. Rights to 'The Night Manager' Starring Hugh Laurie & Tom Hiddleston s

Written By Sara Bibel

PASADENA, CA – January 10, 2015 – BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC today announced a co-production partnership for the television adaptation of John le Carré’s novel “The Night Manager.”  Multiple Emmy® nominee Hugh Laurie (“House”) and Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse, Midnight in Paris) will star in the mini-series, which is set to begin filming in spring 2015.  Susanne Bier, who won an Academy Award® for In a Better World, will direct.

A contemporary interpretation of le Carré’s espionage drama – and the first television adaptation of a le Carré novel in more than 20 years – “The Night Manager” mini-series will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality.  The eagerly anticipated series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) as he navigates the shadowy recesses of Whitehall and Washington where an unholy alliance operates between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade.  To infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie), Pine must himself become a criminal.

“‘The Night Manager’ is truly the whole package. It’s a terrific piece of source material, great producers in The Ink Factory, a phenomenal writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Susanne Bier, and two incredibly talented actors,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of programming, production and digital content. “Beyond that, it represents AMC’s continuing commitment to finding creative ways to work with the international community to bring the best television to our network – an initiative we have ramped up very quickly that has already resulted in multiple high-quality projects for our air. We’re thrilled to be in business with the BBC and the fantastic ‘Night Manager’ team.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: “It’s a fantastic coup to bring le Carré back to our screens after more than 20 years. He is quite simply one of the greatest novelists of our time, and I am sure that with AMC, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie on board, this will be one of the BBC’s most unique, ambitious and unmissable dramas.”

Simon Cornwell of The Ink Factory said: “Working with AMC to deliver ‘The Night Manager’ to U.S. and Canadian audiences is a huge privilege. AMC has established itself as one of the great innovators in television in the 21st century, and alongside the BBC we believe they are the best possible partners to support this incredible project. In Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston we have the core of an extraordinary cast, in Susanne Bier a great director, and in David Farr, an exceptional writer who is bringing a brilliant contemporary take to one of le Carré’s finest novels. We couldn’t be more excited!”

Hugh Laurie said: “I loved ‘The Night Manager’ when it was published, and for more than 20 years have yearned to see it realized on screen; I am now thrilled and honored to have the frontest of front row seats.  All the moving parts are finely machined – we just have to not mess it up.”

Tom Hiddleston said: “I could not be more excited to join BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC for ‘The Night Manager.’ Jonathan Pine is a thrilling prospect. Described by John le Carré as a ‘sometime army wolfchild with a special unit’ in the British forces, ‘caterer, chef, itinerant hotelier, perpetual escapee from emotional entanglements, collector of other people’s languages, self-exiled creature of the night and sailor without a destination,’ Jonathan Pine is the most mysterious and complex kind of British hero. It’s an honor and a privilege to work with such truly impeccable collaborators as Hugh Laurie and Susanne Bier in bringing this to the screen. David Farr’s screenplay, adapted from le Carré’s brilliant novel, is absolutely outstanding. I’m beyond thrilled and I can’t wait.”

by Daniel Falconer | 30 October 2013

Hugh Laurie is now a regular Twitter user after saying he wasn't a fan and did not "understand" the social networking site.

The former 'House' star appeared on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' alongside Celine Dion on Tuesday (29.10.13) and the chat show host found out he had joined the micro-blogging site.

Afterwards, Jimmy tweeted: "Hugh Laurie is officially on twitter. But you'd never guess his name - it's @Jlumbrozo. Seriously. It is. Welcome Hugh. (sic)"

The actor and musician, who has released his critically-acclaimed debut, Let Them Talk, posted: "Having damned this technology as the seed of Satan, I finally succumb. Let tyrants tremble. And so forth."

The 54-year-old actor previously said he "does not understand" the social networking phenomenon, despite pal Stephen Fry being an avid user.

But although he didn't participate much until now, he said his friend's comments were "the absolute best - the cream of the crop".

Take that Mark Harmon. You never get to talk about fingers in butts. Borderline NSFW audio depending on how your work feels about two sophisticated gentlemen reciting multiple variations of jobs and sacks for the world’s enjoyment.

Hugh Laurie wants to reunite with Stephen Fry Source: Bang Showbiz (LIST)

Hugh Laurie

Hugh Laurie says he and Stephen Fry "often" talk about reuniting and while they are unlikely to do another sketch show, he wants them to team up for a revue show.

Hugh Laurie is keen to reunite with Stephen Fry for a stage show.

The 'House' actor - who worked with his comedy partner on four seasons of 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie' - has revealed the pair "often" talk about teaming up again, but insists they will not be making another sketch show.

He said: "I think probably sketching is a young man's game because, by and large, it's about mocking people much older than you. We are not only the age of cabinet ministers, we are probably older than half the cabinet."

The 54-year-old star said he struck up a pretty "instantaneous" friendship with Stephen when the pair met at Cambridge University, and they are keen to work with each other on a stage revue show similar to those of popular 1950s and 1960s comedy duo Michael Flanders and Donald Swann.

Hugh Bonneville & Hugh Laurie Being Eyed For The ‘Paddington Bear’ Movie? (FLICKS AND BITS)

hugh bonneville Hugh Bonneville & Hugh Laurie Being Eyed For The Paddington Bear Movie?

According to The Wrap, ‘Downton Abbey’ star Hugh Bonneville is in negotiations to play the live-action lead in the upcoming movie adaptation of ‘Paddington Bear.’ With production scheduled to start this fall, Paul King (The Mighty Boosh) is directing from a script by Hamish McColl (Mr. Bean’s Holiday). Michael Bond’s beloved “Paddington” books have sold more than 35 million copies in 40 languages. The first book in the bestselling children’s series was published in 1958, though the “Paddington” movie will be a modern adaptation that combines live-action with CGI. David Heyman, who shepherded the blockbuster ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, is producing through his Heyday Films banner along with Jeffrey Clifford.

‘Paddington Bear’ finds the titular talking bear traveling from darkest Peru to London’s Paddington Station where he’s taken in by an English family that must protect him from the villainous director of the Museum of Natural History, who happens to be a cold-hearted taxidermist. Hugh Bonneville is making a deal to play Henry Brown, the well-intentioned if somewhat uptight patriarch of Paddington’s new family. The Wrap add the filmmakers would like ‘House’ star Hugh Laurie to voice the role of Paddington but he is not in negotiations at this time, according to individuals familiar with the project. The official synopsis for the upcoming film is as follows.

Five reasons why Hugh Laurie would be the perfect Doctor Who By Damian Thompson (TELEGRAPH)

Now that Matt Smith has announced his retirement as Doctor Who, it's high time that Hugh Laurie assumed the role he was born to play. Here's why:

1. He's already played the most alarmingly eccentric doctor in TV history.

2. He's the right age. The Doctors have been getting younger faster than policemen; I want one who's older than me, dammit.

3. He could borrow some of House's more interesting attributes – eg, the addiction to Vicodin, which would make for more amusing storylines than Tom Baker's jelly babies.

Hugh Laurie:Playing House was a nightmare says Hugh Laurie (who made £250,000 an episode) (DAILY MAIL)

He had one of the best jobs in Hollywood, picking up an estimated £250,000 an episode and a clutch of coveted TV awards along the way.

But it seems that Hugh Laurie was every bit as hard to please as his fictional alter-ego, the grumpy Dr Gregory House.

The British actor today sets out the full depth of the despair he felt while filming his hit TV series House.

Laurie, 53, says he found his filming commitments so bleak that he hoped to have an accident on the way to the studio just to earn a few days rest.

His starring role as Dr House made him one of the highest-paid TV actors of all time.

The U.S. drama, which finally ended last year after eight series, also won him two Golden Globe awards and six Emmy nominations.

But in an interview he says: ‘[It was] a gilded cage. At this distance it all sounds absurd.

Ridiculous. After all, what was I doing other than playing about, telling stories with a very nice bunchof people? What could be constricting about that?

Hugh Laurie and crew are no mere 'House’ band Article by: NEAL JUSTIN , Star Tribune Updated: August 19, 2012 - 4:51 PM

Hugh Laurie opened his set at the Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis Saturday night with a warning.

"Until recently, I was an actor," said Laurie, best known for playing the title role of "House" for eight seasons. "I suppose if a pilot got on the intercom and said that, until two weeks ago, he had been a dental hygienist, how many of us would stay on the plane?"

The audience soon discovered there was no reason to panic. In fact, Laurie and his backup group, the Copper Bottom Band, soared for two hours, taking listeners on a tour of New Orleans music graced with humor, enthusiasm and genuine chops.

The stage, populated with battered lamps, a coat rack and a stuffed bird, was as cozy and intimate as the tunes.

Laurie, dressed in a long black coat and frilly shirt, could have placated fans with a few contemporary numbers and references to his Fox drama. Instead, he led a pure love affair to early 20th-century jazz through classic numbers like "St. James Infirmary Blues," "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Swanee River."

Laurie's vocals changed to reflect each piece, channeling Ray Charles one moment and Jimmie Rodgers the next. He may not be a great singer, but he's a masterful impressionist.

Every persona was supported by a crackerjack team of musicians, most notably the very versatile guitarist Kevin Breit and horn player Vincent Henry, who each handled three or four instruments throughout the evening. Vocalist Jean McClain was underutilized, but she made the most of her spotlight moment, plowing through a soul-stirring version of "John Henry."

As you can see from the trailer (below), Hugh and Leighton play lovers… but there's one small catch. She's only 24 and he's obviously an older friend of the family.
