BOSTON MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

Hugh Laurie will return to North America this fall for a tour in support of his sophomore release Didn’t It Rain. The English actor best remembered as the star of FOX’s “House” turned blues musician will stop in Boston for a performance at the Wilbur Theatre on Tuesday, October 29. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $45 to $79, are now on sale through Ticketmaster.

Didn’t It Rain, Laurie’s second studio album and follow-up to 2011′s Let Them Talk, was released in the United States earlier this month after a May release for Europe. Like its predecessor, the album contains several blues songs but unlike the previous album, branches into the genres of Jazz and R&B, among others. Laurie once again plays piano and guitar and provides vocals, with the Copper Bottom Band playing additional instruments. Didn’t It Rain was recorded in Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles with Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi). It also features several special guests including Tah Mahal, Gaby Moreno and Jean McClain

What is the next step for Dr House? Exlusive interview with Hugh Laurie Tags: Commentary, Hugh Laurie, World, Russia, Society, Interview, European Football Championship 2012 Yulia Monakhova Jun 20, 2012 22:59 Moscow Time (VOICE OF RUSSIA)

For the first time in his life Hugh Laurie came to Ukraine. The visit of the world famous British actor, also known as Dr. House, visited this country in the middle of Euro-2012. The Voice of Russia discussed with Laurie his life after the TV-show, his music and football, of course.
In the light of Euro 2012 would you call yourself an active football supporter?

I love football very much. I cannot play 90 minutes; I cannot even do 9 minutes. But I love it very much and I watched the game last night. I must say that England was a little bit lucky, but Ukraine played terrifically well. It was very exciting stuff. There is almost nothing better than a big sporting championship like this. It makes me happy like nothing else except may be music. But it is close between football and music.

What would happen if Dr House had a football ball instead of a small ball?

It could do, although not for Americans, as they don’t understand this game at all. It is getting a little bit more popular in US, but very slowly. They are more about basketball and American football. But one day they will understand.

We know Hugh Laurie as an artist, who is he as a musician?

I feel in my heart that I have been a musician longer than anything else. When I was young boy music had been my passion. It was always what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be. I never gave it enough time; I should have been doing more scales. Music is closer to the “real” me than any acting I have done. It is much closer to my heart.

You received musical education when you were six years old, is that correct?

Yes, but for a very short time. One month, that was all. And I hated it.

What made you start again?

I started listening to records. I think the first blues record I heard was a Willy Dixson song, that I heard on the radio. It was like an electric shock and I was glued to the radio. I started buying records and like every young boy I wanted to be a guitarist. But slowly I started listening more to the piano players. I used to listen to Muddy Waters whom I love. I love his guitar playing and his singing, but I found myself listing to his piano player Otis Spann on his records. Back then it was very difficult, but I tried to do the same on the piano. Nowadays with Itunes and Youtube it is much easier to work out what is going on. Listening to records brought me back to music.

Why did it take you so long to start your professional career in music?

Cowardness. I suppose I was thinking: “I am not ready. I need to practice more, I need to work more and commit more”. And I kept putting it off for later. But then I turned 50, now I am 53, and you reach a point in your life when you think: “I cannot wait, I have to do this now”. I don’t want to be an old man saying that I could have done that. This is something I have to do now, but I probably should have done it before. I am just a coward for not doing it before.

What blues means to you?

I have loved this music since I was very young. Since then I was the only one who listen to this music, everyone else was buying pop music. I never bought it. And I could never understand why other people could not hear what was so beautiful in music. I always tried to get people to listen to Muddy Waters, and Willy Dixon, and Howlin Wolf. And I still have that passion for getting people to hear this music and hear how beautiful it is. I love the idea that some people will hear this and say: “Wow, I never heard any Lead Belly songs, or J.B. Lenoir, or The Mississippi Sheiks, so I am going to go and buy those records now.” I feel like it is a great honor if I manage to do that even for just one person.

House star Hugh Laurie and wife enjoy romantic holiday after eight years living apart By COLETTE FAHY PUBLISHED: 16:55 EST, 8 June 2012 MAIL ON LINE

They spent years apart while he filmed his long running TV series House in the US so it’s no surprise British actor Hugh Laurie and wife Jo Green are making up for lost time now it has finished.

The unlikely heartthrob, who won a legion of fans with his portrayal of bad-tempered medic Gregory House on the TV show which ended in May, is in Buenos Aires as part of his world tour with band Copperbottom.

However, Jo was happy to come visit him at work and the couple took some time out to enjoy a romantic lunch in the city.

Hugh Laurie Gives Benaroya the New Orleans Blues by Michael van Baker on June 7, 2012 (THE SUN BREAK)

From the moment he strolled out onstage–no cane, unlike his House, M.D., character–Hugh Laurie had the Benaroya Hall audience firmly on his side, so it wasn’t really necessary, in a burst of Englishness, for him to soft-shoe over having the temerity to come before us to play music out of New Orleans’s history. (In another burst of Englishness, Laurie made this the first New Orleans blues concert I’d attended with a toast to the Queen in advance of her Diamond Jubilee.)

Laurie plays piano and guitar, but, he instructed the audience, the real musical thrills were going to come from the other musicians onstage: the Copper Bottom Band. They were the gleaming Rolls Royce and its throaty purr, he said, he was merely the hood ornament–throwing his arms back in the classic Spirit of Ecstasy pose.

If you missed the evening, Laurie’s New Orleans songbook can be found on CD; Let Them Talk contains many of the songs performed. I have to confess to rating his piano playing higher than his guitar, and both higher than his singing. It’s not that he has a terrible voice, but it isn’t suited to every one of these songs he clearly loves, and which often have been sung by the best.

Hugh Laurie in the House! Female fans go wild as the actor kicks off tour with band after wrapping hit show By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Hundreds of middle-aged women raced to a sleepy beach town in California last week to see House star Hugh Laurie open the tour of his blues band.

The crowd of Laurie fanatics queued for up to four hours to be the first into a small venue in Solana Beach, just outside of San Diego.

Screaming and cheering throughout his 90 minutes performance, they couldn't get enough of the 52-year-old.

Laurie and his band Copperbottom kicked off the U.S leg of their world tour on Tuesday - and tickets had been completely sold out for the opening night since November.

The crowd – mostly women over 40 – went wild when Laurie took to the stage just after 8pm, and cheered and laughed uproariously whenever he cracked a joke in his 'sexy' dry English accent.

Laurie performed his album Let Them Talk – a collection of blues covers – and looked dapper, and a bit shy, in a shabby grey suit and mustard coloured shirt.

Alan Rickman to Play CBGB Founder in Biopic by Borys Kit, THR | May 14, 2012 4:45 EDT (BILLBOARD)

Alan Rickman has signed on to play the legendary owner and founder of CBGB in Randall Miller and Jody Savin's project revolving the seminal New York rock club.

Miller will direct the picture from a script he and Savin wrote together. They hope to begin shooting in June.

Rickman will play Hilly Kristal, who in the late 1970s sought to create a venue for country, bluegrass and blues music (the "CBGB" of the name) in New York City. But after acts playing that music were tough to find, Kristal allowed local performers to play. That decision was precipitous, as the club soon became ground zero for rock 'n' roll as well as punk, launching the careers of performers such as The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.

Hugh Laurie: Dr. House to play blues in Kyiv in June (Ukraine's Main News)

British actor and musician and star of the popular TV series House, Hugh Laurie, will play a gig in Kyiv to promote his debut blues album.

As a part of this year's tour, Laurie will perform in Kyiv (on June 20), Minsk (June 22), St. Petersburg (June 24) and Moscow (June 25), according to the Web site of the Euro Entertainment company. His debut album "Let Them Talk" was released in 2011.

The album, which consists of classic blues songs, was recorded in Los Angeles and New Orleans. "In my imagination, New Orleans just straight hummed with music, romance, joy, despair; its rhythms got into my gawky English frame and, at times, made me so happy and sad, I just didn't know what to do with myself," the concert organizers quoted Laurie as saying.

"Acting is largely about putting on masks, and music is about removing them," the actor was quoted as saying. Hugh Laurie was first became well known as one half of the Fry and Laurie double act, along with his friend and comedy partner Stephen Fry. The duo than starred in the Jeeves and Wooster TV series adapted from P.G. Wodehouse's stories.
