Steven Soderbergh and Clive Owen Team Up for Cinemax's The Knick

Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Side Effects, HBO's "Behind the Candelabra") will direct Clive Owen (Children of Men, HBO's "Hemingway & Gellhorn") in the entire ten-episode season of the Cinemax original series "The Knick," which begins production in New York in September.

Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, says, "We are thrilled that Steven and Clive have chosen to bring this unique and exciting series to Cinemax."

Set in downtown New York in 1900, "The Knick" centers on Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.

Gerard Butler: Having a ball (SCOTSMAN.COM)

GERARD Butler has had a busy month. Dubai, Toronto, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Oslo. And Scotland.

He celebrated his 43rd birthday last month and knew he had to do it in the motherland, so he made a stopover on his way back to the US, where he lives between New York and LA.

Born and raised in Paisley, for Butler, Scotland is “a break” from a life lived 24/7, a place where he can “get out and breathe and be a part of the mountains, glens and lochs”. As such, he visits as often as he can, and 
today – a grey December morning in a bare hotel room in London – he can’t stop raving about a “magical” Highland trip he took in the summer.

“I just made it up as I went along,” he says excitedly. The adventure took him from a “haunted room” in Loch 
Lomond to Inverlochy Castle via various pitstops: “I was begging for a B&B at 1am in Plockton because everywhere was full and the barmaid ended up saying, ‘well, I have a B&B in another town if you want to come and stay there?’ It was nuts. A lot of my best trips have been those ones in Scotland where you never quite know they’re going to happen.”


He recalls another: “I was on my way to the airport and it just felt too soon. It was really breaking my heart. You know that feeling that only thinking about your country can ever give you, those butterflies?” He puts his hand on his heart.

“I was on the phone with my agent saying, ‘why am I leaving?’ And they said, ‘well don’t leave. Stay’. So I got to Edinburgh Airport and I carried on driving. I drove right through to Perth, went into an outdoors store and bought a tent and walking boots and spent the next few days camping and walking.”

Start him on the green green grass of home and he’s got plenty to say.

‘Downton Abbey’ season 3: New videos featuring Joanne Froggatt, Hugh Bonneville (CARTER)

Before taking back to Britain to promote (and hopefully watch) their Christmas special, the cast of “Downton Abbey” season 3 all had an opportunity this past week to help promote the upcoming third season on PBS (premiering on January 6) on Anderson Cooper’s “Anderson Live!” talk show. What unfolded as a result was a rather lovely combination of humor, heart, and information about the show that so many of us love.

A die-hard Downton Abbey fan paid $20,000 to go on a date with the show's star Brendan Coyle.

A night with the actor, who plays butler John Bates, was up for auction with bids starting at $5,000.

But lovestruck Sandra Doshner, a 52-year-old retired medical technologist from Long Island, is so crazy about the show that she bid four times the asking price.


in classic rom-com style, their New York date included a ride through Central Park in a horse-drawn carriage earlier this week, where the smitten Ms Doshner reportedly read poetry to the star.

Alan Rickman to Play CBGB Founder in Biopic by Borys Kit, THR | May 14, 2012 4:45 EDT (BILLBOARD)

 Alan Rickman has signed on to play the legendary owner and founder of CBGB in Randall Miller and Jody Savin's project revolving the seminal New York rock club.

Miller will direct the picture from a script he and Savin wrote together. They hope to begin shooting in June.

Rickman will play Hilly Kristal, who in the late 1970s sought to create a venue for country, bluegrass and blues music (the "CBGB" of the name) in New York City. But after acts playing that music were tough to find, Kristal allowed local performers to play. That decision was precipitous, as the club soon became ground zero for rock 'n' roll as well as punk, launching the careers of performers such as The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.
