Let Tom Hiddleston Seduce You: ‘The Night Manager’ Is the Best Bond Audition Yet

THE DAILY BEAST
Kevin Fallon
April 19, 2016

There’s a scene late in AMC’s sexy spy thriller The Night Manager in which star Tom Hiddleston,
tailored to a swoon in a bespoke suit, suavely gestures to the barkeep and orders a drink: “Excuse me, sir, could I have a vodka martini, please?”

After the miniseries run of The Night Manager, a slick and highly entertaining cat-and-mouse romp (but mostly a six-episode Tom Hiddleston audition to be the next James Bond), it’s a wonder that our dashing hero doesn’t freeze in the frame right there, as whimsical animations take over the screen to the tune of a Shirley Bassey torch song.

Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager

That’s not a spoiler. It might be an endorsement.

We meet Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a former soldier and the best damned night manager at a Cairo hotel you’ve ever met.

He encounters the mistress of a corrupt member of Egypt’s most powerful family. He senses she’s in danger. They fall, with the swiftness of 007 in pheromone-sniffing distance of a leggy blonde, in love—and in bed. And you know the rule about the first Bond Girl: tragedy ensues.

Quickly, he finds himself entrenched in an undercover mission to bring down the man responsible, an English billionaire named Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), a corrupt arms dealer in the costume of a wealthy philanthropist.

Hugh Laurie in talks to play villain in ‘RoboCop’ remake In reboot of 1987 hit, the 'House' actor would co-star with Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson BY ETHAN SACKS / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

For those who thought Hugh Laurie was mean as the title doctor on "House, M.D.," wait until the "RoboCop" reboot hits theaters next year.

The 53-year-old British actor — best known on this side of the pond for playing Dr. Gregory House for eight seasons — is in negotiations to join a cast that already includes "The Killing's" Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Laurie would play the movie's villain, the wealthy CEO of Omnicorp, the company behind the construction of RoboCop — and the robot that would replace him.

House' series finale: A look back at the best episodes By Andrea Reiher May 20, 2012 4:12 PM ET (ZAP 2 IT)

"House," the medical drama that has also been a character study of a misanthropic genius doctor played wonderfully by Hugh Laurie, is coming to a close Monday, May 21 after eight seasons. Zap2it would like to take a look back at the strongest episodes of the series.

It was hard to narrow down, indeed. The show has always been fairly strong, with individual episodes that we'd put right up there with the best of any show. But here are the ones that made the cut.

"Three Stories," S1, E21

The first season of "House" was fine - but the show really took off with "Three Stories." House gives a lecture to a class of medical students, recounting three different leg injuries. Carmen Electra gives a rather delightful guest-starring turn and the viewers finally find out why Dr. House has his limp.

"No Reason" - S2, E24

In the first of many solid season finales, House is shot in his office, which cause House to have to not only trust his team to solve the Case of the Week, but try to figure out what is reality and what is fiction. It doesn't sound nearly as good here as it was on TV, but trust us - it's a good one.

"Son of Coma Guy" - S3, E7

House brings coma guy (an awesome guest casting of John Larroquette) out of his vegetative state in order to find out about the family history so he can treat coma guy's son. Not one of "House's" milestone episodes, but a quietly good offering and a fun buddy adventure for Laurie and Laroquette.

The beginning of Season 4

It's hard to pick just one episode, but after House fires his team at the end of Season 3, Season 4 begins with a multi-episode arc that sees House picking a new team via a "Survivor"-like competition. There are very few shows that could essentially get rid of three of the main characters (even if for just some time) and be completely reinvigorated.

"Frozen" - S4, E11

For the juicy post-Super Bowl slot, "House" brought in Mira Sorvino as a psychiatrist trapped at the South Pole who becomes ill. House must walk her through treating herself via webcam, as she and Dr. House have a bit of a long-distance spark.

Hugh Laurie: 'Lot of sobbing' as 'House' wraps By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY Updated 11h 59m ago (LIFELINELIVE)

Hugh Laurie hangs up his House cane for good with Monday's final episode (Fox, 9 p.m.), ending an eight-year run.

"There was a lot of sobbing," he told Jay Leno last night. "The last couple of weeks have been very trying," he admitted. "It felt like we were having little mini-memorial services each day" as cast members filmed their final scenes.

'House' Finale: Hugh Laurie Says Goodbye To Fox Drama By FRAZIER MOORE 05/17/12 08:57 AM ET (HUFFPOST)

NEW YORK — It will be painful saying goodbye to "House."

The Fox medical drama concludes its eight-season run Monday with a series finale at 9 p.m. EDT, preceded by a one-hour retrospective. And with that, Hugh Laurie will be done as the show's abrasive champion, Dr. Gregory House – unless, Laurie adds with a laugh, "someone comes up with an idea for a stage musical."

"I feel a huge satisfaction that we got to the end with our dignity intact," he declares. "I never felt that we did anything that wasn't true to the character or the show – like, `House gets a puppy.' I think that's quite an achievement."

No doubt. Sure, the medical mysteries that formed the core of most episodes inevitably grew a bit formulaic as the seasons piled up. (Didn't each week's patient always seem to start bleeding from a different orifice, bafflingly and life-threateningly, right on cue before each commercial break?)

But if the rhythm of the investigation began to feel over-familiar, House never did. On the contrary: He is only more complex, obstreperous and fascinating.

Not that he didn't start with a bang right from the series' inception in November 2004: Here was a brilliant diagnostician with a snide manner, a limp and a cane, a stash of painkillers and a perpetual stubble. He flouted regulations, ducked cases that bored him and kept things stirred up as a not-so-merry prankster.

He was conceived as a contemporary Sherlock Holmes. Like that fictional 19th-century sleuth, House is indifferent to those he is helping, focused instead – with cool deduction and uncanny intuition – on the challenging nature of the mysteries that plague them.

Both men play musical instruments, take drugs (House is hooked on Vicodin, while Holmes has a thing for cocaine), and both have trusty sidekicks: Holmes' Dr. John Watson and House's Dr. James Wilson, his best and probably only friend, played with quirky forbearance by Robert Sean Leonard.

But the Holmes connection has never been the most interesting thing about "House."

The sesquipedalian presenter's time has been taken up with hosting QI, authoring books and appearing in films over the past decade, while Laurie played the acclaimed lead role in US medical drama House and indulged his love of blues music, releasing an album of covers.

Hugh Laurie: The doctor is out: After eight seasons, Hugh Laurie and cast say farewell to 'House' at series finale wrap party By CASSIE CARPENTER (MAIL ON LINE)

It has been one of the biggest U.S. television hits of the past few years and made a Stateside star out of British actor Hugh Laurie. But was time for the cast of House to bid farewell to the hit medical whodunnit show last night as they stepped out onto the red carpet for the series wrap party. There were no tears for star Hugh, but he admitted it had been emotional saying goodbye to the series after nearly eight years.

'Generally speaking, I'm pretty hopeless at goodbyes,' Laurie told Zap2it, 'and I'm mostly not very good at hellos, either. 'I think I'm all right with the in-between stuff, but this is a very long, protracted goodbye to a character and to about 300 people I've worked with for eight years. This has been very emotional, and it continues to be.'

As the nasty, cane-wielding Dr. Gregory House on the TV drama, Hugh found American fame, was nominated for an Emmy award six times, twice won a Golden Globe, and became the highest paid actor on television. The 2012 Guinness Book of World Records lists his salary at a whopping $700,000 an episode.

Hugh Laurie: Spoiler - Clue to how ‘House’ ends, and it’s not pretty POST STAFF WRITER Last Updated: 2:00 PM, April 20, 2012 Posted: 10:04 PM, April 19, 2012 (NEW YORK POST)

Is “House” giving away its big finale moment next month in the title of the episode. The finale — set for May 21 — is called “ Everyone Dies.” That’s a less-than-subtle clue for how the star, Hugh Laurie, plans to end his 8-year run as the brilliant but irascible diagnostician, Dr. Gregory House.

It appears to be a reference as well to the very first episode of the show in 2004, which was called “Everyone Lies.” The release of the finale title set off a wave of speculation among fans that the doctor may meet his end along with the series.

Hugh Laurie: 'I'm pretty hopeless at goodbyes' By Jay Bobbin April 19, 2012 (ZAP 2 IT):52 PM ET

Hugh Laurie confesses that filming the series finale of "House" has been "a troubling period" for him. The antithesis of the caustic doctor viewers have loved to hate for eight seasons, the pleasant, warmly humorous British talent is trying to deal with wrapping up production this week on the Monday-night FOX drama.

The network is being guarded with details of the May 21 farewell, though reports suggest returns by past co-stars including Olivia Wilde and Kal Penn. In any case, Laurie is feeling the impact of the end. "Generally speaking, I'm pretty hopeless at goodbyes," he tells Zap2it, "and I'm mostly not very good at hellos, either.

I think I'm all right with the in-between stuff, but this is a very long, protracted goodbye to a character and to about 300 people I've worked with for eight years. This has been very emotional, and it continues to be."

I COULD QUIT UK SAYS STAR HUGH LAURIE Hugh Laurie admits for the first time he might not move back to Britain after House ends Friday April 13,2012 By Lizzie Catt with Lisa Higgins and Jack Teague (EXPRESS UK)

HAVING previously felt as if he were on safari” living in Los Angeles, Hugh Laurie admits for the first time he might not move back to Britain after his TV show House ends.

The former Blackadder star has become the highest-paid actor on US television, receiving a reported £440,000 per episode for his role as a grouchy genius doctor in the top-rated drama.

But while Laurie, 52, lives in a Hollywood mansion during filming his wife Jo and their children Charlie, 22, Bill, 20, and Rebecca, 17, are said to be based primarily in West London.

It was widely assumed that Laurie would move straight back to the UK when the current, final series of House came to an end. But now he has suggested that the pull of the California sun might be too strong.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugh Laurie: House’s legacy and the Sherlock archetype Gem Wheeler As we prepare to wave a final goodbye to House, Gem asks whether the series blazed a trail for the BBC's Sherlock...(DEN OF GEEK)

House is a particular kind of antihero: attractive – in a vaguely sociopathic sort of way – driven, obsessive, and awfully good at getting results. Sound familiar?

Those of you who’ve been lapping up the adventures of a certain consulting detective should be nodding in recognition at this point. And there’s a very specific reason for that.

The Sherlock Holmes reworked by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss is, unsurprisingly enough, an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary creation. He’s been tinkered with, of course. The Victorian sleuth’s non-existent sex life has been, ahem, probed, while his drug addiction, interestingly, has been pushed into the background, reflecting the changing concerns of a different age.

Rather than merely clothing the nineteenth-century icon in a swish coat and adding some complementary brooding, the character has been reworked to give a modern slant on the traits we’ve come to love. But the modern Sherlock, as written by pop-culture mavens such as Moffat and Gatiss, was never going to exist in a vacuum.

Sometimes, the series has acknowledged this. Watson’s even called him Spock after one too many bouts of cold logic, in a sly nod to the influence of Sherlock’s analytical nature on Star Trek’s ultra-cool Vulcan pin-up (sorry, Kirk fans, I’m with Dax on this one.)

Hugh Laurie: 'Film-friendly' Oamaru enjoys movie benefits ROSA STUDHOLME ( THE TIMARU HAROLD)

The benefits of having Mr Pip filmed in the Oamaru historic precinct are "immense".

The film adaptation of Lloyd Jones' novel is being translated to the big screen by Oscar-nominated Kiwi director Andrew Adamson, starring House and Blackadder actor Hugh Laurie. Filming for part of the movie took place in Oamaru in August. The Whitestone Civic Trust, which owns the collection of heritage buildings that make up the historic quarter, was told at its annual meeting last week it was hard to quantify what the total benefits to Oamaru would be by the time the film was released to a global audience.

"The film crew and actors were in Oamaru for longer than expected, mainly because of the inclement weather at the time," trust chairman Phil Hope said. "The trust was very proactive in assisting the Mr Pip production crew and, hopefully, this will serve us well in having Oamaru recognised as a film- friendly town." Many local people were involved in the filming and related activities, he said.

"The Northern Hotel had all of the ground-floor and several first-floor windows replaced. Stone work on the front of the building around the front door was repaired and the door rebuilt and ground-floor windows painted. "The Northern Hotel building looked magnificent during the filming process and it will be interesting to see how it turns out when the film is released."

HOUSE FINALE TEASE WITH HUGH LAURIE April 4, 2012 · by Brody Gibson · in Television (BOOMTRON)

You know something special is about to go down when Hugh Laurie appears on camera to talk directly to his fans about the final episode of House and the near imminent end to the show’s eight-season run. Just to be clear, the video below features Laurie as himself, not the grumpy, medical genius he’s famous for portraying. You can immediately tell he’s not acting because you can hear his delightful English accent. I could listen to that voice all day. Unfortunately, the video is short and mostly to the point: reminding us that House is ending and sooner or later we are going to have to say goodbye, but not before creating some memories of all the good times we’ve had with the show.

The album, which consists of classic blues songs, was recorded in Los Angeles and New Orleans.  "Acting is largely about putting on masks, and music is about removing them," the actor was quoted as saying. Hugh Laurie was first became well known as one half of the Fry and Laurie double act, along with his friend and comedy partner Stephen Fry.
