The legions of Tom Hiddleston fans campaigning for the actor to be the next James Bond were (almost) rewarded in early 2016, when The Night Manager began broadcasting on BBC One.

Essentially a long-form Bond flick spread across six episodes of television (based on a John le Carré book, as opposed to an Ian Fleming one), it followed Hiddleston's luxury-hotel night manager (and former British soldier) Jonathan Pine, as he's recruited as a spy and tasked with taking down a secret arms trade operating between Whitehall and Washington, DC.

Pine may have completed his mission, but if there's one thing James Bond taught us, a spy's work is never done.

It garnered huge critical, audience and award-ceremony success, being nominated for 36 awards and winning 11, including Golden Globes and Emmys. Which probably helped its chances of returning for a second series.

There's one significant element holding it back, but we'll get to that in a moment.

We've got some bad news for those desperate Googlers – there's literally no chance of a new series this year.

Still, 2017 has brought some good news to fans. In March of this year, director Susanne Bier confirmed that scripts for a second season were "slowly being developed".

This was the first official confirmation that series 2 was even being considered, and it was reason enough for The Night Manager maniacs to order a slap-up celebration meal via room service.

Bier told Broadcast: "We all very much want to do a season two, but the thing we absolutely do not want is to do something that does not live up to the level of season one. That would be a really bad idea."

Despite series one's massive ratings success / huge awards haul, the show has yet to be renewed for a second series.

The BBC and AMC, along with producers The Ink Factory, released a statement explaining the situation, saying they are in the "early stages" of development.

"[We] are in the early stages of developing a potential second series of The Night Manager, but nothing is definite yet and we have nothing to announce," they said.

Producer Simon Cornwell (who is also author John le Carré's son) has said that the show's creators "would love to do another series".

One possible – and fairly major – hold-up is the fact the source book was a one off, with no follow-ups.

Fans of Tom Hiddleston’s extended James Bond audition - AKA The Night Manager - have been pining for a sequel ever since the BBC show finished airing last year.

Earlier this month, director Susanne Bier confirmed a second series is "slowly being developed,” saying:  "We all very much want to do a season two, but the thing we absolutely do not want is to do something that does not live up to the level of season one. That would be a really bad idea.”

New reports claim Hiddleston - along with co-stars Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman - have signed up for another series, an insider telling The Daily Express they producers are “just working on the story, and then it’s down to availability.”

They are two of the most well-renowned actors on the planet at the moment - and are starring together in new blockbuster action movie Kong: Skull Island.

And British hunk Tom Hiddleston revealed he got to film some pretty romantic scenes - including one in an open-doored helicopter at sunset over the Pacific ocean - with his stunning co-star Brie Larson.

So BBC Radio 2 show host Chris Evans couldn't resist trying to find out if there was a budding love affair between the stars when Tom stopped by the radio studios on Friday morning.

Though Tom did admit a Huey helicopter ride with Brie over a sunlit ocean was 'one of the great gigs'.

The Eton-educated actor, who has been tipped as a possible replacement for Daniel Craig as James Bond, told The Chris Evans Breakfast Show: 'Brie Larson and I got to go in the island of Oahu in Hawaii, at four o'clock in the afternoon, with no doors on the helicopter, the blades running..'

Chris interjected and jokingly said: 'Brie Larson sitting next to you, that must have been terrible.'

Actors Olivia Colman and David Tennant are in Bristol today, Friday, filming scenes for the upcoming series of ITV crime drama Broadchurch.

The stars of the slow-burning murder mystery were pictured between takes at the entrance to Mail Handling International in Feeder Road, in the industrial eastern side of the city centre.

It is the third series of Broadchurch, which is actually set on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset with the coastal resort of Bridport effectively playing the title town.

So when Night Manager star Tom Hiddleston was seen exiting a London restaurant at the same time as one, the Sun was quick to label her his “mystery blonde...”

This “mystery” woman is in fact historian Dr Suzannah Lipscomb.

Lipscomb has written a number of books on Tudor England, as well as presenting history programmes on the BBC and Channel 5.

And no she is not “Hiddleston’s” either.

She explained on Twitter before the story was even published that she was simply leaving the Ivy Club in central London at the same time.

Thomas Kell writer thrilled at deal with Colin Firth for Night Manager-style TV series

A London spy writer whose new thriller describes the race to stop an Islamist attack has revealed his excitement at plans to turn his books into a TV series similar to The Night Manager with Colin Firth as the star.



“It’s fantastic” said Charles Cumming, the author of the award-winning Thomas Kell espionage novels who has been hailed as a new John Le Carré. “The idea is to do the Kell books — A Foreign Country, Colder War, A Divided Spy — as television,” he said. “So six hours of A Foreign Country along the lines of The Night Manager, a similar type of series, with Colin Firth playing Kell. I’m just about to start the script.”

Cumming, a father of two from Brook Green in west London, began his spy-writing career after being turned down for a job with MI6. As well as the TV plans — formed with Firth after the actor’s film company bought the screen rights to the Kell novels — Cumming’s latest thriller, A Divided Spy, is about to be published. Set largely in London, it tells of Kell’s mission to recruit a Russian spy and thwart a terror attack by a British extremist.

Cumming, 45, said the book was “a London novel” which will provide readers with suspense and insights into terrorism, at the same time as portraying the vitality of the capital.

“A Divided Spy is the most London-centric of the Kell books,” he added. “There’s a lot of business in Somerset House, there’s Westfield and White City, an incident in Brook Green, it dances around a lot. It starts in a casino in Knightsbridge. That’s a whole other world. There’s also an extended anti-surveillance section so it’s moving around on the Tube, buses and taxis.

UK bookmaker suspends betting on Tom Hiddleston to be James Bond

LONDON –  A British bookmaker has suspended betting on British actor Tom Hiddleston to be the next James Bond.

Coral says a flurry of bets in recent days made "The Night Manager" star the 2-1 favorite to replace Daniel Craig to be the next 007. But after a particularly large wager, the odds plummeted and betting was suspended.

Coral says Luther star Idris Elba and Homeland actor Damian Lewis had been Bond front-runners in previous months. But Coral spokeswoman Nicola McGeady, says while earlier in the year "there was a gamble" on those two, nothing has "come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston."

He won over even more fans with his performance as suave Jonathan Pine in TV hit The Night Manager.

And now it looks like Tom Hiddleston could be even closer to replacing Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond after he was spotted at the same venue as the franchise's film-maker.

A source told MailOnline how the actor was spotted at London's Soho House: Dean Street on Wednesday, with 007 director Sam Mendes.

Sam has helmed two Bond films in recent years, but also has non-007 interests, having recently announced he will direct and produce The Voyeur's Motel, adapted from Gay Talese's novel.

Tom, 35, has been one of the names in the frame to replace Daniel, who has played the suave MI6 agent since Casino Royale 10 years ago.

Although Daniel, 48, or producers haven't confirmed the actor has retired the role, there has been a flurry of speculation in recent months.

Last week, Tom played down the rumours, telling chat show host Graham Norton: 'The thing is the position isn't vacant as far as I am aware. No one has talked to me about it.

'I think the rumours have all come about because in the Night Manager I play a spy and people have made the link.'

 AMC definitely chose a gilded sword to pierce into Tuesday nights and The Night Manager looks to have done been up to the job. In Live + 3 results, the April 19 debut of the Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston starring co-production with the BBC delivered the cabler a total viewership of 1.6 million with 455,000 among adults 18-49 and 554,000 among the 25-54 demo.

In what is the biggest jump an AMC show debut has ever had, that’s a surge of 70% in total viewership over the Live + Same Day audience that the first episode of the Susanne Bier directed 6-part TNM snagged. Looking at the two demos, which also are record breaking jumps percentage-wise, TNM was up 72% over L+SD in the 18-49s and 73% in the 25-54s.

That’s not a spoiler. It might be an endorsement.

We meet Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a former soldier and the best damned night manager at a Cairo hotel you’ve ever met.

He encounters the mistress of a corrupt member of Egypt’s most powerful family. He senses she’s in danger. They fall, with the swiftness of 007 in pheromone-sniffing distance of a leggy blonde, in love—and in bed. And you know the rule about the first Bond Girl: tragedy ensues.

Quickly, he finds himself entrenched in an undercover mission to bring down the man responsible, an English billionaire named Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), a corrupt arms dealer in the costume of a wealthy philanthropist.

“I don’t know that I’d make a very good spy,” says Tom Hiddleston. This, from a man widely spoken of as the next James Bond. We’re discussing his latest role in the AMC miniseries The Night Manager, based on John le Carré’s 1993 novel, premiering April 19. Hiddleston plays Jonathan Pine, an unassuming hotel supervisor who turns out to be a very, very good spy. So much so that he’s recruited by British Intelligence to bring down international arms dealer and billionaire Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).

Hiddleston gives the spy question a little more thought — he gives everything a lot of thought — and then he laughs. “Let’s be honest, I’d make a hopeless spy because people know who I am. It would be very obvious.”

That much is indisputable: these days Tom Hiddleston couldn’t exactly sidle in to a room and order a smoothie. Thanks to roles as Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, the lead in the excellent High-Rise, and most of all as Loki in the ongoing, seemingly neverending Avengers franchise, Hiddleston is already that guy on the poster. But it’s Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager — well-turned-out, well-spoken, intelligent but reserved — whom he feels is closest to himself. Even if he could never be a spy.

“Pine felt strangely new for me as an actor because it felt quite close to home — I haven’t played close to home. I’ve played at the extremes of my range — Loki and Hank Williams are quite far away from me,” he says. “With Pine, there was a lot in him that I could relate to. It was something about his moral conviction. His private soul. He’s very hard — he keeps his cards close to his chest, and I think that’s very true of me.”

Ying to Pine’s yang is Richard Roper, and in an inspired piece of casting, The Night Manager pairs off Hiddleston with fellow debonair Brit Hugh Laurie. If Dr. Gregory House behaved badly but was essentially good, “Dickie Roper” is the other way ‘round. He starts out a wellspring of urbane charm, but a few episodes in, as we start to see what those weapons he’s selling to the highest bidder can do, we understand why le Carré in the original novel labeled Roper “The Worst Man in the World.”

They were opposing forces in the critically-acclaimed six-part spy thriller The Night Manager.

But Tom Hiddleston, 35, and Hugh Laurie, 56, put on a united front when they attended The New York Times Times Talks event in the Big Apple on Monday.

The two British actors were all smiles as they stood shoulder to shoulder on the red carpet at the Directors Guild of America Theater.

Audiences swooned over Hiddleston in the John Le Carré adaptation, and the star looked suitably debonair for the special interview in a plaid navy suit with a buttoned down striped shirt.



The House star wore a grey suit jacket with a navy shirt and dark trousers. He opted for a pair of dark brown suede shoes to finish off his ensemble.

Both were on fine form as they answered questions posed by Cruz in front of a live audience.
The charismatic duo were full of praise for Le Carré's work, with Laurie saying: 'As a teenager I worshipped those (novels)... it sort of defined my teenage reading really.

'I was utterly entranced by this novel (The Night Manager). I thought it was the most beautifully romantic story.'

He joked that when he first read the novel he imagined himself playing Hiddleston's protagonist Jonathan Pine, rather than the arms dealer antagonist Richard Roper.

Tom Hiddleston, Aidan Turner, Tom Hardy: Is Bond a Three Horse Race?

Last year, a whole host of names such as Idris Elba and Damian Lewis - both fine actors - were banded around as a possibility for the next 007. However, it is looking increasingly like a three horse race for one of cinema's biggest and most iconic roles.

Should Craig call time on his tenure as Bond, will it be Tom Hardy who takes over? As Tom Hiddleston got what it takes to move the franchise on? Or will Aidan Turner land this coveted role?

Tom Hardy is an actor who has been linked to this role for quite some time and remains the bookies favourites to take over from Daniel Craig when he finally leaves this role behind.

For me, Hardy has always been the obvious choice to take on the role of 007. There is no denying that the handsome actor looks the part, but there is an air of menace about him that I think would fit this role beautifully.

I have just always thought that Hardy and Bond would be the perfect fit and that he is an obvious choice.

Hardy already has a huge fan base and would no doubt bring new viewers to the Bond franchise. The actor is also no stranger to tackling big movies so the Bond franchise would be very safe in his hands.

Up until fairly recently Tom Hiddleston was perhaps not everyone's first choice to take on the role of 007. One episode into his TV stint on The Night Manager and fans were calling for his name to be thrown into the hat.

There is no denying that Hiddleston is a beautiful thing and would more than look the part in a tux. But The Night Manager showed that the British star also had the action chops that are required to take on this role.

While I still think this role should go to Hardy, I would not be disappointed if it was revealed that Hiddleston was to take over from Craig. Hiddleston is a wonderful actor and I think that he would bring a sensitivity and an intelligence to this character that would be very exciting to explore.

The last few weeks has seen support for Hiddleston as Bond grow and grow and he is now the second favourite - behind Hardy - to land the role. He really has come from nowhere to be a major player in this race to become 007.

Of all the names that are potentially in the frame to take over the role of James Bond, Aidan Turner is perhaps the least favourite of the lot - the role of Bond would certainly send his star rocketing; just like it did for Craig.

He is no stranger to success with The Hobbit film franchise and TV series Poldark under his belt. Bond would be the perfect platform for him and Bond producers have had a knack of casting those who are not hugely famous in the role.

Interestingly, Turner is the only one who has been linked to a meeting with producers to discuss the role. A source told The Sun last month that the actor had held preliminary talks with Bond producers.

British actors David Harewood (“Homeland”), Neil Morrissey (“Line of Duty”), Katherine Kelly (“Mr Selfridge”) and Tobias Menzies (“The Honorable Woman”) have been announced to join the star-studded cast of the television adaptation of John le Carré’s novel “The Night Manager,” which started filming last month.

Co-produced by AMC with BBC One and The Ink Factory, the latest names to feature in the international production join previously-announced stars Hugh Laurie (“House”), Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), Olivia Colman (“Broadchurch”), Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) and Academy Award-winning director Susanne Bier (In a Better World).

Harewood is most well-known for his role in Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning drama “Homeland,” whilst Morrissey was recently featured in BAFTA-nominated drama “Line of Duty.” Kelly starred in two series of Emmy-nominated British drama “Mr Selfridge,” and Menzies has made a name for himself in Golden Globe-winning drama “The Honorable Woman” and Emmy Award-winning series “Game of Thrones.”

Other names announced to appear in the espionage drama include BAFTA nominees Adeel Akhtar (“Utopia”) and Natasha Little (“Wolf Hall”), as well as Jonathan Aris (“Sherlock”) and Hannah Steele (“Wolf Hall”).

A contemporary interpretation of le Carré’s 1993 novel – and the first television adaptation of a le Carré novel in more than 20 years – “The Night Manager” mini-series will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality. The series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) who is recruited by an intelligence operative named Burr (Colman) to navigate the shadowy recesses of Whitehall and Washington where an unholy alliance operates between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade. To infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie), which includes girlfriend Jed (Debicki) and an associate named Corcoran (Hollander), Pine must himself become a criminal.

Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie have begun their ascent of John le Carré's The Night Manager in the Swiss Alps – with the dramatic peak of the Matterhorn as picturesque backdrop.

The BBC drama of the same name is a six-part adaptation of the espionage novel. Along with Hiddleston and Laurie, Rev stars Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander will reunite for the BBC/AMC co-production.

The Night Manager tells the story of British soldier Jonathan Price (Hiddleston) who is on a mission to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie). The series was announced last October, with stars Hiddleston and Laurie confirmed in January 2015.

AMC, BBC One and The Ink Factory announced Thursday that she, Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander are joining the cast of the espionage drama starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie.



This is the first adaption of the novel by John le Carré in more than 20 years. The story follows a former soldier and night manager of a European hotel (Hiddleston) called upon by an intelligence operative (Colman) to infiltrate the network of an international arms dealer (Laurie).
