UK bookmaker suspends betting on Tom Hiddleston to be James Bond

FOX 411
April 15, 2016

LONDON –  A British bookmaker has suspended betting on British actor Tom Hiddleston to be the next James Bond.

Coral says a flurry of bets in recent days made "The Night Manager" star the 2-1 favorite to replace Daniel Craig to be the next 007. But after a particularly large wager, the odds plummeted and betting was suspended.

Coral says Luther star Idris Elba and Homeland actor Damian Lewis had been Bond front-runners in previous months. But Coral spokeswoman Nicola McGeady, says while earlier in the year "there was a gamble" on those two, nothing has "come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston."

Tom Hiddleston: Movie review: 'High-Rise' fascinates with destructive decadence

EXAMINER.COM
April 30, 2016
1:13 PM MST

High-rise

Rating:StarStarStarStarStar

Debuting April 28 on VOD and coming to theaters on May 13, "High-Rise" opens on imagery of a scruffy Tom Hiddleston in disheveled business attire. He is meandering through bloodied, squalid conditions of looted destruction where we find him rotisserie cooking an unusual dinner on a retrofitted spit. His third-person voiceover, backed by a classical record playing in the background, speaks of eerie satisfaction and renewed confidence amid the obviously dire conditions. A jack-hammered transition card hits declaring "three months earlier." That setup begs our minds to question what has transpired to create this reality. Consider that a perfect tease and taste of what is to come in Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's dystopian 1975 novel. In the words of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, "you ain't seen nothing yet."

At this new starting point, set in the late 1970's, the Tom Hiddleston we meet is greatly different. He is Dr. Robert Liang and he has just moved into an angular and tiered cement residence building as part of a newly-constructed complex of high-rises in a nondescript suburb of London. Liang is a chilly forensic doctor and an eager social climber seeking new anonymity, a clean slate, and an investment into something unique for a living space. He resides on the 25th floor, which counts as upper middle class within of the 40-story building.

The high-rise was designed to be self-sustaining and self-sufficient with all of the necessary amenities, from groceries to recreational facilities and security, available on the premises for its discerning homeowners. The orchestrator of this well-to-do lifestyle is Anthony Royal, dubbed "The Architect" by the social circles beneath him. Played by Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, he leads this designed and desired utopia from the top in his terraced top-floor penthouse with his trophy wife (Keeley Hawes).

Lavish parties are the seen-and-be-seen events within this closed circuit of a community. Robert attempts to mingle with the myriad of white privilege residents of the building. He catches the romantic eye of Royal’s personal aide, Charlotte Melville (Sienna Miller), a woman with a curious son (Louis Suc) lives in the next floor above him. Quickly, Robert experiences the trappings of the building's readily apparent, yet unwritten, hierarchy and befriends people of different classes. Second floor tennant Richard Wilder (Luke Evans), a TV documentarian, and his depressed pregnant wife Helen (Elisabeth Moss) reek of discontent and embody the brewing struggle of the poorer residents from the lower floors.

Little inconveniences like power outages turn into arguments and tiffs. Envy overcomes decadence. Hosts become bullies and people reveal their classist flaws. Pettiness boils over to rage. Neighborly relationships devolve into isolation. Uncivilized competition decays community harmony. Schemes turn into wars were resources like food, electricity, perks like swimming pools, and the freedom of elevators become contested to the death. Primal violence takes over on every imaginable level. By the time Portishead’s haunting cover of ABBA’s “S.O.S.” shows up, you realize how much everything has changed.

Tom Hiddleston is an ideal lead for Liang. He has the charismatic range to swing from a man built for the finer things to a sullen survivor of cold calculation and resolve. His wicked smirk and smooth line delivery cloak his character’s emotions and intentions brilliantly. Hiddleston is simply intoxicating, as he so often is in both his smaller films like “Only Loves Left Alive” and Marvel blockbusters. Luke Evans provides the strongest voice and performance outside of Hiddleston as the man targeting Royal and system and asking the loud questions no one wants to answer.

Director Ben Wheatley ("Kill List," "Sightseers") has crafted a sharp film of unraveling thrill and suspense that drips with endless style. The director made a wise choice to keep Ballard’s 1970’s setting and time period, giving “High-Rise” a throwback feel and lively tone on multiple levels. Composer Clint Mansell and cinematographer Laurie Rose tinge this film with an auditory and visual palette with period-appropriate filters of soundtrack and light. If you did not know these modern actors, you could have sworn this film was made 40 years ago. The cool exterior of swinging ambiance acts as sheep’s clothing for a savage wolf underneath. This film’s time capsule surface dissolves to keenly project its stout cautionary tale towards parallels to the modern day.

"High-Rise" is a strongly constructed blend of experimental science fiction with colossal political and social commentary. The layers of symbolism, analogy, and allegory are as tall as the building itself. There is a richly disturbing and dark fascination in observing how all of this frivolity comes crashing down in unpredictable and unlimited disaster. In this writer's opinion, inspired by a more pertinent and interesting source, this is the stylish and topical film the overrated "Snowpiercer" could only hope to become with its similarly isolated microcosm of class warfare.

'High-Rise' Makes Class Warfare Sexy - Tom Hiddleston, Keeley Hawes, Jeremy Irons

VICE
By Brandon Harris
April 13, 2016

If Brazil, Lord of the Flies, and Snowpiercer were stuck in a blender, the result might look something like Ben Wheatley's strange and stylish new film High-Rise, which makes its US premiere April 20 at the Tribeca Film Festival. An adaptation of J.G. Ballard's 1975 dystopian novel famous for its canine-eating upper classes, High-Rise has polarized audiences and critics, hailed by some as "the social-surrealist film of the year," dismissed by others as "a bit of a dog's dinner." The film takes place in an impeccably ruined residential skyscraper, the high-rise of the title, seemingly beset by dysfunction and outright war amongst its residents, who are arranged vertically by a caste system that is very British, yet uniquely tribal.

"We wanted to make something that was not totally recognizable," the 43-year-old director told me last fall at an impossibly chic hotel bar in the Old Town section of Zurich, where the filmed had screened. The picture has a take-no-prisoners verve and sardonic humor to spare, but one leaves it as if having been bludgeoned with a hammer, unsure of up or down, left or right, teetering on collapse. How did we get here? What are the rules of this place? Wheatley and his collaborators, screenwriter Amy Jump and European mega-producer Jeremy Thomas, seem unwilling to offer anything that resembles traditional exposition or human motive throughout High-Rise's near two-hour runtime.

"Periods don't necessarily look like themselves," he remarked, a riddle for sure, but one that makes sense somehow coming from Wheatley, a portly, blued-eyed, shaggy-haired Brit who has become one of the isles' most lauded young directors in less than a decade of feature work. The director's surreal rendering of Ballard's class-oriented societal meltdown is set in an alternate-reality version of the late 1970s. The clothes and records and décor evoke the period without ossifying us there; the world has progressed in ways that it didn't in our times, but perhaps reasonably could have.

Although there are no poor people present, working- and lower-middle-class stiffs reside on the bottom levels while higher-income professional types, such as our hero Dr. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston), live on the middle floors below the haute bourgeoisie at the top. Dr. Laing, who has the style and sophistication of those living on the upper floors, draws the interest of the Architect (Jeremy Irons), a mildly disabled schemer who lives at the top of this Grand Guignol with a diabolical, sexually charged redhead (Keeley Hawes) who tends to horses on their rooftop terrace.

Tom Hiddleston Takes Acting Very Seriously & 9 Other Things His Nuffield Theater Q&A Teaches Us

19 HOURS AGO ENTERTAINMENT

While everyone in America celebrated the Oscars on Sunday, the film industry’s sweetheart Tom Hiddleston was doing a Q&A at the Nuffield Theatre in England. The small event was for members of the theater, (who can congratulate themselves on scoring quite a few fangirls as patrons, now) and was dedicated to hearing Hiddleston’s thoughts on acting, theater, and the arts in general.

I’ve always known Hiddleston loved all aspects of acting, but this Q&A really highlighted that enthusiasm. Although the event was closed to cameras or recording devices, thanks to several Hiddlestoners who attended, fans can read re-caps of the questions asked and what Hiddleston had to say about the arts. (And even without video of the event, all this is right in line with his general attitude towards taking acting seriously.) “Tom is seriously passionate [about] acting,” one attendee told me.

In fact, Hiddleston divulged that he initially joined the industry because it had essentially overtaken his life. “I slowly realized it had begun to take up all of my time,” he told the crowd. Although he focused on acting for the most part, Hiddleston also threw some feminism in there, referencing Emma Watson’s HeForShe campaign and reportedly saying, “Women and men should be allowed to be whoever they are without restriction.”

And as if that wasn’t wonderful enough, according to fans who were there, here is exactly how dedicated to the theater arts Hiddleston is.

He Doesn’t Drink at the Theater

According to Tumblr user l0kilee, who wrote an in-depth recap of the event, Hiddleston doesn’t get why some playhouses serve alcohol. “I never understood wanting to be in a lesser state of awareness in a theatre,” he said.

Truth is the Lifeblood of Acting

L0kilee revealed that Hiddleston found it hard to identify with Hank Williams for I Saw the Light, because Hiddleston couldn’t relate to Williams’ alcoholism. “I love my life too much,” Hiddleston said of why it was difficult to understand putting himself in that situation.

He’s Not a Method Actor

Hiddleston says he doesn’t subscribe to that idea because director feedback is too important for him to stay completely in character. But Tumblr user HiddleMemes says Hiddleston admitted he sometimes stays in his character’s voice between takes.

Happy Birthday, Tom Hiddleston! Here's Where Fans Of the British Heartthrob Can Catch Him This Coming Year

A DAY AGO ENTERTAINMENT

no title

Ah, a beautiful day is upon us: Tom Hiddleston’ birthday is here. It’s hardly like we ever pass up an opportunity to talk about the classically trained actor’s best attributes, but clearly we should spend some time especially dwelling in it on his birthday. It has, after all, been a relatively quiet year on the Hiddleston front — we got Thor: The Dark World in November 2013, and we got Only Lovers Left Alive that year, too; but we only got a Muppets Most Wanted cameo and The Pirate Fairy in 2014. Never fear, though, Hiddlestonians: Hiddleston’s got quite the slate lined up for us in the coming year and beyond.

For real, though: 2015 is going to be a mighty busy year for Hiddleston. From a return visit to the Avengers and a pretty big biopic, to an American television debut and a Guillermo Del Toro movie, the newly minted 34-year-old has a lot on his plate. Luckily for all of us it’s a pretty juicy plate — there’s a lot to bite into.

Here’s what you can look forward to in the realm of the Hiddles in the coming year and beyond:

Avengers: Age Of Ultron

This one was supposed to be kept a secret, considering all that previous talk of Hiddleston very much not being in another Avengers movie. But Idris Elba spilled the beans, much to Joss Whedon’s consternation, and both Elba and Hiddles will be making visits from Asgard in Age Of Ultron, even if only for a brief scene.

High-Rise

Hiddleston will be going from Asgard to a high-rise building that goes completely bonkers. He plays Dr. Robert Laing, and according to Empire and io9 he will be participating as this building turns into a “bacchanalian den of iniquity.” Damn, sign me up.

Tom Hiddleston Shares First Look at 'High-Rise'

MOVIEWEB
Feb 6, 2015 by B. Alan Orange

Worried there just won't be enough Tom Hiddleston to go around on the big screen this year, as he most likely won't have much screen time in Avengers: Age of Ultron? You'll be happy to know he takes the lead in High-Rise, an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's popular novel. To help ease the pain of these Tom Hiddleston-free days, the actor himself has posted a first look image at the thriller on his Personal Twitter, introducing his character Dr Laing.

High-Rise takes place in a new residential tower built on the eve of Margaret Thatcher's rise to power, at the site of what will soon become the world's financial hub. Designed as a luxurious solution to the problems of the city, it is a world apart. Enter Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston), a young doctor seduced by the High-Rise and its creator, the visionary architect Anthony Royal (Jeremy Irons). Laing discovers a world of complex loyalties, and also strikes up a relationship with Royal's devoted aide Charlotte (Sienna Miller).

High-Rise is in development and stars Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy, Reece Shearsmith, Peter Ferdinando. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley.

Tom HIddleston: AMC Secures U.S. Rights to 'The Night Manager' Starring Hugh Laurie & Tom Hiddleston s

ZAP2IT
January 10, 2015
Written By Sara Bibel

PASADENA, CA – January 10, 2015 – BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC today announced a co-production partnership for the television adaptation of John le Carré’s novel “The Night Manager.”  Multiple Emmy® nominee Hugh Laurie (“House”) and Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse, Midnight in Paris) will star in the mini-series, which is set to begin filming in spring 2015.  Susanne Bier, who won an Academy Award® for In a Better World, will direct.

A contemporary interpretation of le Carré’s espionage drama – and the first television adaptation of a le Carré novel in more than 20 years – “The Night Manager” mini-series will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality.  The eagerly anticipated series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) as he navigates the shadowy recesses of Whitehall and Washington where an unholy alliance operates between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade.  To infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie), Pine must himself become a criminal.

“‘The Night Manager’ is truly the whole package. It’s a terrific piece of source material, great producers in The Ink Factory, a phenomenal writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Susanne Bier, and two incredibly talented actors,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of programming, production and digital content. “Beyond that, it represents AMC’s continuing commitment to finding creative ways to work with the international community to bring the best television to our network – an initiative we have ramped up very quickly that has already resulted in multiple high-quality projects for our air. We’re thrilled to be in business with the BBC and the fantastic ‘Night Manager’ team.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: “It’s a fantastic coup to bring le Carré back to our screens after more than 20 years. He is quite simply one of the greatest novelists of our time, and I am sure that with AMC, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie on board, this will be one of the BBC’s most unique, ambitious and unmissable dramas.”

Simon Cornwell of The Ink Factory said: “Working with AMC to deliver ‘The Night Manager’ to U.S. and Canadian audiences is a huge privilege. AMC has established itself as one of the great innovators in television in the 21st century, and alongside the BBC we believe they are the best possible partners to support this incredible project. In Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston we have the core of an extraordinary cast, in Susanne Bier a great director, and in David Farr, an exceptional writer who is bringing a brilliant contemporary take to one of le Carré’s finest novels. We couldn’t be more excited!”

Hugh Laurie said: “I loved ‘The Night Manager’ when it was published, and for more than 20 years have yearned to see it realized on screen; I am now thrilled and honored to have the frontest of front row seats.  All the moving parts are finely machined – we just have to not mess it up.”

Tom Hiddleston said: “I could not be more excited to join BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC for ‘The Night Manager.’ Jonathan Pine is a thrilling prospect. Described by John le Carré as a ‘sometime army wolfchild with a special unit’ in the British forces, ‘caterer, chef, itinerant hotelier, perpetual escapee from emotional entanglements, collector of other people’s languages, self-exiled creature of the night and sailor without a destination,’ Jonathan Pine is the most mysterious and complex kind of British hero. It’s an honor and a privilege to work with such truly impeccable collaborators as Hugh Laurie and Susanne Bier in bringing this to the screen. David Farr’s screenplay, adapted from le Carré’s brilliant novel, is absolutely outstanding. I’m beyond thrilled and I can’t wait.”

DID TOM HIDDLESTON GET MARRIED IN SECRET? HE'S WEARING A RING ON THAT FINGER ... — PHOTO

If you thought Benedict Cumberbatch getting engaged broke the Internet, just imagine if Tom Hiddleston secretly got married. That’s what a lot of fans feared this weekend when they spotted a gold band on a certain finger of his. On Sunday, a fan posted a picture with the actor and people immediately pointed out that it looked like Hiddleston was wearing a ring on his left hand.

But you can all breathe a collective sigh of relief because Hiddleston is most likely not married. He’s not even rumored to be dating anyone. (Although, I can’t imagine why, since he’s the world’s best catch.) The real story here, it seems, is that Hiddleston forgot to take his prop ring off at the end of his filming day. He’s currently playing Hank Williams for the movie I Saw the Light and his character has a wife. (Who is played by the very lucky Elizabeth Olsen.)

IS TOM HIDDLESTON SINGLE & ARE YOU TOO SCARED TO KNOW THE ANSWER?

BUSTLE
GEORGETTE EVA @GEORGETTEABLYSO 4 HOURS AGO ENTERTAINMENT

There’s something that’s been leaving so many of us scratching our heads for the past year or so. Something we’ve all wondered but were too afraid to ask in case our worst fears were confirmed. For one, it deals with the delicate nature of the heart. For another, it deals with the man we’ve all been fantasizing about. That’s right, I’m wondering if Tom Hiddleston’s single, and you should go ahead and admit that you are too. It’s actually a matter of international security, considering he’s from London. And it’s an intergalactic matter, too, seeing as his most famous character, Loki, lived in Asgard. So I’m really doing a service to the entire universe by investigating this.

Let’s start off with what we know. Hiddleston, like many celebrities, has been tight lipped about his dating history, though there were a few recent rumors involving actresses Jessica Chastain and Lara Pulver. Both ladies made light of the reports, and there hasn’t been any reason to believe any secret relationships are brewing.

So what about now? Is Hiddleston single? Here are some reasons why he’s probably not dating anyone.

HE WOULD TELL US

Despite last summer’s relationship with record producer Jane Arthy — everyone nearly fainted when the Elle UK editor-in-chief tweeted that she sat next to Tom Hiddleston and his girlfriend Jane at Wimbledon — by fall Hiddleston was saying he was single. In an interview with British GQ he said,

I understand the curiosity. I hope when there’s really something to write about, then I’ll be able to talk.

See? When it’s serious, Hiddleston won’t be able to contain himself and all his feels and would want the whole world to know.

WE HAVEN’T SEEN HIM HAND-IN-HAND WITH ANYONE

In 2010, Hiddleston was rumored to be dating Thor costar Kat Dennings and her hilarious self. Seriously, this was one couple I rooted for. Of course, there was no official word about their relationship, but they were hand-in-hand at Comic Con and at a few other events, but they broke up in 2011 before the movie was released. Hand-in-hand, you guys. If we were in second grade, that would practically be marriage right there.

Tom Hiddleston to swing on to King Kong 'origins' film Skull Island

THE GUARDIAN
Andrew Pulver
theguardian.com, Tuesday 16 September 2014 13.32 EDT

Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston has signed on to take the lead role in Skull Island, the follow-up to the Peter Jackson-directed King Kong remake that was released in 2005. No details have yet been released on the nature of his role, but Hiddleston, who shot to international fame playing Loki in the two Thor movies so far produced by Marvel as well as the same studio’s two Avengers films, now counts as a major draw for the science-fiction and fantasy fanbase.

Other than the teaser trailer, which features Kong battling with dinosaurs, little has been revealed about the likely content of Skull Island. Reports suggest it will be an “origins” story, focussing “on the giant gorilla’s mysterious and dangerous world”. Producers are aiming for a release date of 4 November 2016.

Tom Hiddleston has been making the rounds to prove he can take on the legendary career of musician Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, and today it was announced he’ll be getting a little help from an Avenger.

Elizabeth Olsen will play Williams’ wife, Audrey Mae, in the film, which is set to release in 2015. Williams’ real wife, Audrey Sheppard, was a manager for the musician before the couple’s divorce. Their split was not the only issue plaguing Williams’ life, as he died at 29 from heart failure after battling alcoholism, prescription drug abuse and back problems.

Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans: Bard the Bowman joins Loki in Ben Wheatley's High Rise - Luke Evans and Tom Hiddleston will be in the same film

HOBBIT FORMING
By Daniel Wood | Yahoo Contributor Network – 4 hours ago

Luke Evans' portrayal of Bard the Bowman in the 'Hobbit' films has been one of the stand-out performances, which shouldn't be surprising at all given that this is an actor quickly on the rise. But now he's about to join forces with an absolute super star.

I'm of course talking about Tom Hiddleston's whose recurring role as Loki in the Marvel super hero films has catapulted him right to the top of the fame ladder and propelled him to be more than just a super star, he's universally loved the world-over because he's the cheeky yet menacing Asgardian trickster.

That's because Evans is set to join Hiddleston in up-and-coming British director Ben Wheatley's next film 'High Rise' which he is to begin working on fresh after completing work on directing the first two episodes of 'Doctor Who'. Honestly there are so many fandoms colliding here that I'm getting a bit dizzy.

Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman

Indiewire reports "The film's set in a dystopian society, in a huge tower block, into which Hiddleston's doctor Robert Laing moves, and which soon finds itself bitterly divided along class lines, as all morality and society collapses into squalor and violence. There's no word as to who Evans will be playing"

Tom Hiddleston for Ben Wheatley's JG Ballard adaptation High Rise

DIGITAL SPY

Ben Wheatley has announced that Tom Hiddleston will star in his next film, an adaptation of JG Ballard's High Rise.

The Sightseers director confirmed the news on Twitter and via his blog, sharing a poster by Jay Shaw.

"Here we go. Cant quite believe this is happening," Wheatley said.

"Tom Hiddleston! Jeremy Thomas! Script by Amy Jump! JG BALLARD! Another ace Jay Shaw poster."

Wheatley added that shooting for the film will start in June.

Ballard's High Rise was first published in 1975. It is set in a closed-environment modern high-rise building that descends into violence.

Wheatley was first attached to the project in August 2013 and said at the time that he was a big fan of Ballard's work.
