Tom Hardy dons Bane-esque mask as he fights for his life alongside bald Charlize Theron in new trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road

The newest trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road sees Tom Hardy don some familiar accessories as he's trapped in a bane-esque mask

He's most well known as Bane in Batman: Dark Knight Rises, and it seems the key to Tom Hardy's success is a good mask.

The 37-year-old English actor is seen in a new trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road and it appears as though he'll spend much of the blockbuster film trapped in a heavy Bane-like mask.

Playing the titular character, Tom is seen literally fighting his way through a world of danger as he's joined on screen by the likes of Natalie Portman and Nicholas Hoult.

'My world is fire and blood,' he says at the beginning of the trailer as he overlooks a desert wasteland.

It's unfortunately not long before Max finds himself captured, bound to a stake tied to a villainous crew's vehicle.

One explosion later the soft spoken hero uses the stake to pole vault his way from his captors, as a gang of girls led by Charlize Theron's character Imperator Furiosa head towards the chaos.

'Out here everything hurts. Take what you can and run' she says to her group.

From there all hell breaks loose, with flashes of intense vehicular combat and a healthy dose of Tom Hardy action.

It all crescendos to a scene of fiery tornadoes, with Mad Max clinging to life at the centre.

Fleeing with style: One explosion later the soft spoken hero uses the stake to pole vault his way from his captors

TOM HARDY STARRING IN NEW FX SERIES, TABOO

IGN
Matt Fowler

FX has ordered Taboo, a drama series from award-winning producer Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator), Academy Award-nominated writer Steven Knight (Locke) and award-winning actor/producer Tom Hardy - who will also star.

Scott Free Films and Hardy Son & Baker will commence production on the eight-episode first season mid-to-late 2015 in the U.K., with the series tentatively slated to debut in mid-2016. The series is being produced for BBC One in the U.K., with Sonar Entertainment distributing internationally.

Set in 1813, Taboo is based on an original story by Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. In Taboo, Hardy plays the lead role of “James Keziah Delaney,” a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a very dangerous game.

Taboo was created by Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, Peaky Blinders), who most recently wrote and directed the feature film Locke starring Hardy. Scott and Hardy will both serve as executive producers on Taboo.

“We are privileged to have landed Taboo and to work with this exceptional team led by Ridley, Tom and Steven,” said Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions. “Tom’s passion for this project, from conceiving the original idea with his father to portraying James Delaney, promises to infuse this epic story with great personal passion and credibility.

Tom Hardy & Charlotte Riley Secretly Married for Two Months? (Report)

Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley have secretly married.

Peaky Blinders star Tom Hardy has reportedly tied the knot with his actress fiancée. Hearts. Break. Everywhere.

The 37-year-old hunk, who has been dating Charlotte Riley since 2009, married in the South of France and managed to keep it a secret for more than two months. How they managed to keep that quiet, we're not too sure.

Tom and Charlotte, 32, decided it would be an intimate affair and were joined by a small group of friends and family at the 18th-century castle Chateau de Roussan in Provence on July 4.

The actor has a six-year-old son, Louis, by ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed, who was also at the wedding.

A family source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "It was a beautiful, low-key day made even more special because they just had their closest friends and family around them.

Tom Hardy: Movie Preview - Dogs have their day in Lehane’s ‘The Drop’

LIFESTYLE
BY STEVEN ZEITCHIK
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS

There were dogs on set and dogs in the script, but Tom Hardy felt like the production of “The Drop” could use one more mutt.

The British actor – known for Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” and now, he hopes, Bob, the not-so-simple simpleton in the new crime drama penned by “Mystic River” novelist Dennis Lehane – has a hard time saying no to a pooch, or at least something he likes that might make everyone else a little crazy. So when costar Noomi Rapace brought Hardy to an animal shelter near their Brooklyn set to research their roles, the outcome wasn’t in doubt.

“I knew the minute we walked in there, he’d be walking out with a dog,” Rapace said in her trailer on the New York set shortly after the unexpected canine trip.

Hardy did adopt a dog, a pit-bull puppy, and took her to the set. Never mind that the actor was in the U.S. only for a few more weeks. Never mind that he was spending 10 hours each day shooting a movie, then titled “Animal Rescue” before it was changed.

On a chilly April day during the 2013 shoot, Hardy’s new pet was outside the working-class bar where the film is set, jumping, barking and looking a little overwhelmed, or maybe just confused why someone had yet to walk him over to craft services.

“She’s still around, yep. She’s still around,” said Hardy in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival when asked about the dog. “She has a great home.”

That kind of unexpected behavior characterized Hardy as he made the film, directed by “Bullhead” auteur Michael Roskam and opening Friday after its Toronto premiere last weekend.

Hardy embraced a single-mindedness to play opposite the famously self-critical James Gandolfini (the last movie the late actor shot). Hardy wasn’t bashful in offering suggestions as he watched playback of scenes at the monitors and lobbying Lehane and producers for a more ambiguous ending, which the screenwriter then partly rewrote on set.

He also often indulged in a kind of wild playfulness when Roskam yelled cut, engaging costar Matthias Schoenaerts in what appeared to be a game of unrequited tag and generally getting in touch with his inner child.

“I joke around because if I don’t let it go, it has the counterintuitive effect on the work,” he said in Toronto, puffing on an electronic cigarette.

“Some actors, they can stand still behind a string,” Roskam said. “And with some actors, it’s like they don’t want to over-concentrate and be good when you’re not shooting, and then you say action and they lose it. Tom is one of those actors.”

“The Drop” is a mood piece of double-crosses and beaten-down humans, of dog rescues that are metaphors for lost innocence. Lehane makes his feature-screenwriting debut with the film, adapting the script from his short story. Shot by Nicolas Karakatsanis in the brackish palettes and confined spaces of working-class Brooklyn, “The Drop” has the kind of muted tone and slow-burn pacing one doesn’t see much of in American thrillers these days.

“What I was trying to do was go back into a very authentic era of film noir,” Roskam said. “The average person thinks of noir, and they think of shadows on the ceiling and a femme fatale and a guy with a smoke. For me, it’s a social comment, a voice for the voiceless. I wanted to direct this film as if Frank Capra would have done ‘Taxi Driver.’”

That’s in part why the film was shot entirely on location in and around the neighborhood of Marine Park, a working-class enclave that’s just a few miles from hipster Brooklyn but a time zone away in sensibility. There is a blue-collar bar, named for Bob’s cousin Marv (Gandolfini), who is sort of like Tony Soprano but without the success. Once its owner, Marv has lost the bar to a group of Chechen mobsters who use it as a “drop” point for money laundering.

At the start of the film, a robbery has the mobsters putting the screws to Marv and bartender Bob. Meanwhile, Hardy’s character, a low-key and possibly slow-witted man, has rescued a pit bull pup.

Movie Review: Tom Hardy on road to stardom in ‘Locke

MAINE SUNDAY TELEGRAM

NEW YORK — “It will be over quickly,” Steven Knight told Tom Hardy. The writer-director remembers saying that to his prospective star as a way of convincing him to take part in his experimental project, “Locke,” a film that takes place in real time as the title character makes a fateful 85-minute drive. “You’ll only feel a tiny prick,” Hardy chimes in playfully.

Knight and Hardy met for the first time in November 2012 to discuss another film, but by February of the following year, they were filming “Locke.” “Tom loves theater and challenges and mad ideas, so I went and wrote it with Tom in mind,” Knight says.

The “mad idea” was making a film consisting solely of a man fielding phone calls while driving. Save for some exterior shots, the camera would remain focused on Hardy’s face. “There’s something about phone calls where people are saying one thing but their faces are saying something else, which is such a gift,” Knight enthuses. “It makes you look clever. Just trying to imitate the surreal way that people talk and the way that they jumble everything up and then just one line of poetry and then jumble everything up again and say the opposite of what they mean.”

Hardy first caught Knight’s (and most of the country’s) attention as Eames, the quick-witted forger with a biting sense of humor in the 2010 sci-fi thriller “Inception,” which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. “I was terrified because it was Leo. You can’t battle against somebody like that for screen time,” Hardy recalls. “I thought, I’m just going to give him whatever he needs, and it took a lot of a load off.” He learned that the more an actor gives of himself to other actors and the audience, the better he looks. He extrapolates that thought to life itself. “The more generous a person is in any environment, the more there is to be received.”

Hardy puffs an e-cigarette as he speaks, while sporting a T-shirt that exposes his several tattoos. He also regularly flashes a boyish grin, and he draws on this duality of hard and soft to craft characters that are difficult to ignore. “There’s no particular formula or process for me. I do like to mix some ‘Taxi Driver’ with Disney World,” the 36-year-old English actor says of his process. He has particular disdain for the word “thespian,” and the idea of method acting bores him, though he is known to deeply inhabit some of his roles.

In "Locke," Tom Hardy Only Needs a Car and a Camera to Prove He's the Best Actor Alive

COMPLEX POP CULTURE
BY MATT BARONE | APR 25, 2014 | 9:42 AM

Directed by British screenwriter turned shotcaller Steven Knight, Locke is the epitome of cinematic minimalism. Hardy plays Ivan Locke, a construction manager who gets into the driver's seat of his BMW the night before he's supposed to oversee the biggest concrete pour in Europe's history. But that's the last thing on Locke's mind. As his wife and teenage son call him on the BMW's dashboard phone system, Locke heads down the M5 motorway en route to London, where an older woman he had a one-night stand with is about to give birth to their out-of-wedlock baby. And for nearly 85 minutes straight, Knight's cameras remain inside the car and focus on Locke as he battles through a whirlwind of emotions and comes to terms with the awful way he's about to rip his family apart, not to mention put his successful career in jeopardy.

Indeed, Locke is simply Tom Hardy in a car for a little less than 90 minutes, and it's amazingly captivating and intense. Behind the camera, Knight does a fine job adding unforeseen dimensions and raw energy to his single, claustrophobic location. But let's not get it twisted—Tom Hardy is the film's undeniable MVP.

Nearly matching the beguiling brilliance of his strange Bane voice, Hardy gives Ivan Locke a somewhat exaggerated but consistently pitch-perfect Welsh accent. Why? Hell if I know, but it's an inspired choice, one that exemplifies Hardy's singular risk-taking decisions as an actor. He sports a scruffy beard that undercuts his natural-born handsomeness, lending the character a jovial-neighbor-next-door appeal that's absent in every role he's played before Ivan Locke. He owns all of Knight the screenwriter's dialogue, transmitting an array of feeling, from overwhelming sadness to on-edge anger and manufactured calmness, through little more than facial expressions.

There's a point in Locke where the film nearly jumps the shark, or, for a more appropriate metaphor, crashes the figurative car. Knight mixes pieces of Locke's back-story into his phone conversations, hinting at a painful relationship with his now-deceased father. In the beginning of his trip, Locke swigs medicine to fight a head cold, and after one swallow too many, he begins to imagine that his dad is riding in the BMW's backseat. Fortunately, there isn't an actor playing Locke's own Dexter-like "dark passenger"—Hardy just talks to himself in the rear-view mirror.

It's a potentially silly move on Knight's part, and had he cast a lesser actor to pull off such inherently goofy scenes, Knight could have derailed the entire production. Hardy, however, taps back into the skill he employed to turn Charles Bronson's straight-to-the-camera monologues into towering moments of sheer force, though that specific talent is downplayed in Locke. In Knight's vehicle, he makes his character's fiery but overcooked talk of joining his pops in heaven sound beautifully wrenching.

Tom Hardy To Star In BBC Miniseries Taboo From Steven Knight And Ridley Scott

BLEEDING COOL
Posted on April 3, 2014 by Linda Ge

Tom Hardy and Steven Knight must have really, really loved working together on Locke, because not only is Hardy going to play a role in season 2 of Knight’s Peaky Blinders series, now they’re doing another TV project together.

Taboo is the name, and it’s a historical thriller, which also has Ridley Scott on board as an executive producer. Filming on the 8-episode series will begin in early 2015. Hardy’s a busy man, after all.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in 1813, TABOO follows James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a dangerous game with two warring nations, Britain and America.

Tom Hardy: Exclusive, James Gandolfini's final screen bow in 'The Drop'

It was shortly after their first meeting on the Brooklyn set of The Drop that Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini had to shoot a pivotal, intense scene together.

But director Michaël Roskam had plenty of confidence in the duo for the drama about the underground crime world (due out Sept. 19).

"In that meeting, I could see there was a bit of a smile between them. It was like, 'We're going to nail this, right?' " says Roskam. "And they did this intense scene and were just spot on. There was a beautiful connection between those two guys."

Gandolfini's performance was his last for the big screen, as the actor died of a heart attack at age 51 during an Italian vacation last June, just months after filming The Drop.

Roskam, who was nominated for a best-foreign-language Oscar for his 2011 Belgian drama Bullhead, believes the iconic star of The Sopranos was continuing to break into new territory in the suspenseful drama, showing a different kind of vulnerability.

Lehane lobbied hard to make sure Gandolfini signed onto the project.

"There are certain guys out there that are exceptionally rare who can completely feel this type of guy in their bones," says Lehane. Gandolfini could "speak with a sort of music of the urban experience and do it effortlessly."

Roskam says Hardy and Gandolfini were clearly so proud of their work that they would hang out together on set as if savoring the moment.

Tom Hardy Drives a Car For 85 Minutes, And It's Mesmerizing

VANITY FAIR
BY JULIE MILLER
JANUARY 17, 2014 2:49 PM

\

There are worse places to spend 85 minutes than inside a car with Tom Hardy, even he ignores you the entire time to make calls on speakerphone. This lesson comes courtesy of Steven Knight’s experimental Sundance entry Locke, during which Hardy does just that in real time without ever exiting his vehicle or speaking to another person face-to-face.

And despite those somewhat extreme constraints, the drama is compelling, genuinely moving, and suspenseful. It's a singular achievement for Knight, who also wrote the drama’s measured script, and Hardy, who manages to propel the story forward even though his butt is planted in the same position for an hour and a half.

The film opens on Hardy, a construction manager named Ivan Locke, as he steps into his BMW S.U.V. and leaves a work site. During each phone call Locke makes, the audience slowly discovers more about Hardy and his late-night excursion via trickles of exposition. Knight carefully unfurls more stakes about why Hardy’s car ride is so urgent, why his family is so disappointed in him, and why the timing of his trip is so damning for his construction company.

As the pressure on Hardy’s character mounts, the actor never resorts to showing his stress by going Nic Cage on us—raising his voice, banging on a steering wheel, or flipping off speeding passersby. Instead, he speaks in a Welsh accent so lilting and soothing that we would personally request it for our iOS if we lived in a future Her-type universe that allowed us to make these kinds of decisions. Even though he maintains composure (for the most part), and his position at the wheel for the entirety of the movie, Hardy, with Knight's direction, is able to summon legitimate suspense thanks to the script’s snaking personal revelations, which are masterfully laid out.

Tom Hardy: I was lucky I didn't get AIDS from drug use

Thu, Jan 2, 2014 13:00 GMT

Tom Hardy has said that he was 'out of control' on drink and drugs before he turned his life around, and was lucky that he did not contract AIDS while he was at his lowest.

The actor was addicted to alcohol and crack cocaine until his mid-20s, after which he checked himself into rehab.

Speaking in a charity interview with the Prince's Trust and the Daily Mirror, Hardy said: “I didn’t want anyone to know I was out of control, but I couldn’t hide it.

“Eventually, the body gives up. I was completely kaput. I was lucky I didn’t get hepatitis or AIDS.”

Hardy, who's now one of the UK's leading actors, was at one time facing a lengthy prison sentence after being caught aged 15 in a stolen Mercedes and in possession of a gun.
