Tom Hardy: Movie Preview - Dogs have their day in Lehane’s ‘The Drop’

LIFESTYLE
BY STEVEN ZEITCHIK
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS

There were dogs on set and dogs in the script, but Tom Hardy felt like the production of “The Drop” could use one more mutt.

The British actor – known for Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” and now, he hopes, Bob, the not-so-simple simpleton in the new crime drama penned by “Mystic River” novelist Dennis Lehane – has a hard time saying no to a pooch, or at least something he likes that might make everyone else a little crazy. So when costar Noomi Rapace brought Hardy to an animal shelter near their Brooklyn set to research their roles, the outcome wasn’t in doubt.

“I knew the minute we walked in there, he’d be walking out with a dog,” Rapace said in her trailer on the New York set shortly after the unexpected canine trip.

Hardy did adopt a dog, a pit-bull puppy, and took her to the set. Never mind that the actor was in the U.S. only for a few more weeks. Never mind that he was spending 10 hours each day shooting a movie, then titled “Animal Rescue” before it was changed.

On a chilly April day during the 2013 shoot, Hardy’s new pet was outside the working-class bar where the film is set, jumping, barking and looking a little overwhelmed, or maybe just confused why someone had yet to walk him over to craft services.

“She’s still around, yep. She’s still around,” said Hardy in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival when asked about the dog. “She has a great home.”

That kind of unexpected behavior characterized Hardy as he made the film, directed by “Bullhead” auteur Michael Roskam and opening Friday after its Toronto premiere last weekend.

Hardy embraced a single-mindedness to play opposite the famously self-critical James Gandolfini (the last movie the late actor shot). Hardy wasn’t bashful in offering suggestions as he watched playback of scenes at the monitors and lobbying Lehane and producers for a more ambiguous ending, which the screenwriter then partly rewrote on set.

He also often indulged in a kind of wild playfulness when Roskam yelled cut, engaging costar Matthias Schoenaerts in what appeared to be a game of unrequited tag and generally getting in touch with his inner child.

“I joke around because if I don’t let it go, it has the counterintuitive effect on the work,” he said in Toronto, puffing on an electronic cigarette.

“Some actors, they can stand still behind a string,” Roskam said. “And with some actors, it’s like they don’t want to over-concentrate and be good when you’re not shooting, and then you say action and they lose it. Tom is one of those actors.”

“The Drop” is a mood piece of double-crosses and beaten-down humans, of dog rescues that are metaphors for lost innocence. Lehane makes his feature-screenwriting debut with the film, adapting the script from his short story. Shot by Nicolas Karakatsanis in the brackish palettes and confined spaces of working-class Brooklyn, “The Drop” has the kind of muted tone and slow-burn pacing one doesn’t see much of in American thrillers these days.

“What I was trying to do was go back into a very authentic era of film noir,” Roskam said. “The average person thinks of noir, and they think of shadows on the ceiling and a femme fatale and a guy with a smoke. For me, it’s a social comment, a voice for the voiceless. I wanted to direct this film as if Frank Capra would have done ‘Taxi Driver.’”

That’s in part why the film was shot entirely on location in and around the neighborhood of Marine Park, a working-class enclave that’s just a few miles from hipster Brooklyn but a time zone away in sensibility. There is a blue-collar bar, named for Bob’s cousin Marv (Gandolfini), who is sort of like Tony Soprano but without the success. Once its owner, Marv has lost the bar to a group of Chechen mobsters who use it as a “drop” point for money laundering.

At the start of the film, a robbery has the mobsters putting the screws to Marv and bartender Bob. Meanwhile, Hardy’s character, a low-key and possibly slow-witted man, has rescued a pit bull pup.

Can you believe that we haven’t seen Tom Hardy since the beginning of September? Guys, it has been far, far too long.

We’ve got the British Film Institute to thank for the Tom sighting as he hit the red carpet at the BFI Film festival for the premiere of his movie, Locke. The movie has already gotten amazing reviews. Obviously it’ because Tom Hardy is in it.

Also, is his girlfriend Charlotte Riley pregnant? They haven’t said anything about it, but he kept touching her stomach on the red carpet.

His made his first forays into acting playing soldiers in Band Of Brothers and Black Hawk Down.

And as Tom Hardy stepped back into uniform on Sunday it seemed he was happy to get back to his roots.
The 35-year-old actor stomped around the Prague, Czech Republic set of his new movie Child 44 in knee-high black boots and an old Soviet Union military uniform.

The Dark Knight Rises star had his blue trousers tucked into the boots and wore a dark green jacket with a lone medal on his chest and a blue hat with a red brim and short black visor.

He was convicted of and executed for 52 murders in the Soviet Union that took place between 1978 and 1990.

The book explored the education system, orphanages and homosexuality in the USSR, among other themes.

Tom Hardy is on a mission to save elephants and rhinos from poaching. They have never been in such danger

Tom Hardy makes a good living out of playing villains and hardmen in Hollywood movies. But, he says, “the thought of being eaten by a lion for dinner in the middle of the night while taking a piss has a certain anxiety”.

Hardy recently toured four southern African countries and filmed a two-part documentary, to be shown this week, about the poaching crisis stalking the continent. The trip had its dangers.

“The week before I went out,” he says, “what was left of one lad [after a lion attack] was put in a cooler box and sent home to his mum.” In South African townships, if you are accompanied by a camera crew with expensive equipment, “the atmosphere changes when the sun goes down. The odd machete-wielding glue-sniffer tends to raise the blood level.”

The Dark Knight Rises' Tom Hardy has joined the U.S.S.R.-set spy drama Child 44, based on the first book in author Tom Rob Smith's trilogy.

Easy Money director Daniel Espinosa leads this tale about a security officer trying to investigate a series of child murders in a society that denies such crimes exist in their country. Joining Hardy are The Killing's Joel Kinnaman, Prometheus' Noomi Rapace, Harry Potter's Gary Oldman and The Master's Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Hardy has completed filming a couple different projects that are in post-production. Among them are James Gandolfini's final film, the crime drama Animal Rescue, which brings together a few story elements including a murder, lost pit bull and a scam artist.

Based on a short story by Shutter Island author Dennis Lehanne, the film costars Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows' Noomi Rapace, Orange is the New Black cast member Elizabeth Rodriguez and Animal Kingdom's James Frecheville.

TOM HARDY: James Gandolfini made final film and good friends in Brooklyn (NY DAILY NEWS)

Gandolfini (right) with Tom Hardy on the set of his final film, “Animal Rescue,” shot on location in Sheepshead Bay and Marine Park, Brooklyn.

He shot his final movie in Brooklyn.

James Gandolfini, the son of a bricklayer, spent eight of his final weeks of life on the streets of Flatlands, Sheepshead Bay and Marine Park amongst the “regular” working-class people with whom he felt most comfortable. He played a bartender/bookmaker in “Animal Rescue,” a Fox Searchlight production co-starring Tom Hardy, written by Dennis Lehane and directed by Michael Roskam.

“Jimmy wrapped about three or four weeks ago,” says Mike Sullivan, a friend of the star who spent a lot of time on the set with him. “His trailer was parked right here most of the shoot.”

Sullivan pulls to the curb in front of the parking lot of St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Hendrickson St. “Jimmy got a kick out of it when I told him I got married in this church. He’s been to my house in Breezy Point. He knows my wife, Donna. And now he was in his trailer across from the church where we got married. Who knew he’d be gone so soon?”

Tom Hardy cast as Green Lantern for Justice League movie (fan share)

There was a bit of a debate going on recently, about whether or not Ryan Reynolds should return as the Green Lantern for the Justice League movie, following the flop that was the Green Lantern standalone movie. Some claimed that Ryan should get another shot at it, while others believed that a new star should be cast.

It has been revealed that Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy has been cast in the role of Green Lantern for the Justice League movie. It is believed that the character's alter ego will once again be Hal Jordan but Tom Hardy is expected to bring a much different spin on the character.

That means that we will once again see Henry Cavill as Superman, while Eddie Redmayne will play Batman, Meghan Markle will play Wonder Woman and Ryan Gosling will play The Flash. The only character left to cast for the Justice League movie is Aquaman and we will bring you that as we get it.

Tom Hardy Cuddling a Puppy! (TOO FAB)

Not to steal from Jon Stewart, but now, your moment of zen...

Yes, it's English movie hunk Tom Hardy, cuddling a gray pit bull puppy. Who needs more than that?

The 35-year-old was spotted on the set of his new flick "Animal Rescue" in New York on Monday, getting super close to his adorable, tiny costar (and the pup's stuffed animal stunt double).

In the crime-drama, Hardy stars as a man with criminal past who gets caught up in a heist and killing resulting from the lost pooch. But honestly, look at that face! We'd jump through hoops for the little guy too (we meant the puppy but really, either one).

Tom Hardy To Star In Steven Knight's Shot-In-Real-Time Thriller 'Locke,' Produced By 'Anna Karenina' Director Joe Wright NEWS BY OLIVER LYTTELTON (THE PLAYLIST)

It feels like it's been quite a long time since we saw Tom Hardy on screen. But in fact, he's been working consistently, with five films in the last eighteen months, and the actor's such a chameleon that it's hard to draw a line between Ricky Tarr in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," especially as Hardy spent most of 2012 in Africa shooting the Mad Max movie "Fury Road."

But now that the ever-rising star is done with that, he's lining up all kinds of projects, co-starring with Noomi Rapace in both Michael Roskam's "Animal Rescue" and Daniel Espinosa's "Child 44," working with Doug Liman to climb "Everest" and leading video game adaptation "Splinter Cell." But before any of that, Hardy's going to knock out a quick thriller with an intriguing twist, with Screen Daily announcing that Hardy will top-line "Locke," which will shoot later this month in London.
