In Child 44, Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman have left behind Gotham City in favor of Stalinist Russia.

Summit Entertainment has released the first two stills from the film, showing off Hardy, Oldman, and Noomi Rapace in the dramatic thriller.

The film has an intriguing story and a solid pedigree.  It's based on the novel, the first in a trilogy, by Tom Rob Smith, with Clockers novelist and The Wire writer Richard Price handling the screenplay adaptation.

Child 44 follows Hardy as Leo Stepanovich Demidov, a war hero, rising star in State Security Force, and true believer in the state despite its hypocrisy and brutality in the final days of Stalin's rule.  In 1953, though, Leo begins tracking a serial killer who targets children, and his investigation puts him at odds with his superiors, whose official position is to simply deny that the killer exists.  Leo edges ever-closer to becoming an enemy of the state himself, his increasing determination to find the killer leading him to reclaim his humanity from an oppressive machine.

Noomi Rapace of Prometheus and the Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo plays Raisa, Leo's wife and ally in his search for the killer.  These two stills, courtesy of Rope of Silicon, provide our first official looks at Rapace, Hardy, and Oldman in some sharp Soviet duds.

Tom Hardy To Star In Steven Knight's Shot-In-Real-Time Thriller 'Locke,' Produced By 'Anna Karenina' Director Joe Wright NEWS BY OLIVER LYTTELTON (THE PLAYLIST)

It feels like it's been quite a long time since we saw Tom Hardy on screen. But in fact, he's been working consistently, with five films in the last eighteen months, and the actor's such a chameleon that it's hard to draw a line between Ricky Tarr in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," especially as Hardy spent most of 2012 in Africa shooting the Mad Max movie "Fury Road."

But now that the ever-rising star is done with that, he's lining up all kinds of projects, co-starring with Noomi Rapace in both Michael Roskam's "Animal Rescue" and Daniel Espinosa's "Child 44," working with Doug Liman to climb "Everest" and leading video game adaptation "Splinter Cell." But before any of that, Hardy's going to knock out a quick thriller with an intriguing twist, with Screen Daily announcing that Hardy will top-line "Locke," which will shoot later this month in London.
