Henry Cavill Nominated For 'Critics Choice' Award

HENRY CAVILL ORG
Monday, 16 December 2013 18:12

It's official: Henry Cavill is among the nominees of Critics' Choice Movie Awards! He will compete for the award as the best actor in an action movie. His nomination is the only one for Man of Steel at the Critics' Choice Awards.

The highlight of Henry's acting career to date happened this year — it was the Man of Steel in which he played the title role of Superman. Immediately after the premiere audiences unanimously recognized Henry as Superman for our generation. Critics also were smitten by his screen incarnation of Superman, and, as a result, Henry Cavill is now nominated for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

In a nomination for best actor in an action movie, Henry Cavill will compete for the award with such stars as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man 3), Brad Pitt (World War Z), and Mark Wahlberg (Lone Survivor).

This is the first time Henry has received a nomination for Best Actor. We are very proud of him and wish him luck in winning.

Gerard Butler, in Trinidad, Officially Joins Jamaica Tallawahs

Gerard Butler, in Trinidad, Officially Joins Jamaica Tallawahs

CARIBBEAN JOURNAL
August 23, 2013 | 6:18 pm |

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler has officially joined his new Jamaica Tallawahs cricket team as they compete in the CPL semifinals in Trinidad this weekend.

Butler was revealed to have purchased an equity stake in the team earlier this week.

“Absolutely [it is a long term commitment],” he said. “I did not do this just to be in it for a couple of weeks.  I did it because I hope this new league is a long-term league and that it keeps going and keeps building so it is an investment you hope will build, but also it is an excuse to come out here [to the Caribbean], to a place I love.”

Butler also said there would be a “bit of a rivalry” with fellow actor Mark Wahlberg, who purchased an equity stake in the competing Barbados Tridents at the end of July.

“Absolutely,” he said. “At one point we were going to invest in the same team and then we thought it would be better to keep it separate – ‘You take Barbados and I will go with Jamaica.’

Cary Grant, the one and only By Laurie Bennett March 21, 2013 at 6:05am (MUCKETY)

The New York Times has proclaimed Justin Timberlake the new Cary Grant, which must make George Clooney the old Cary Grant.

The premise for the Times verdict is Timberlake’s suave new look, a tailored contrast to his earlier boy-band bagginess.

Grant, Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite actor, set a standard, sartorial and otherwise, for later generations of actors.

The comparison is made with so many handsome, witty leading men that it has become a cliche.

Hugh Grant (no relation) runs a close second to Clooney as the chosen successor. The Daily Mail pointed out: “Both were born in England, have similar Byronic sex appeal, look good in suits, and excel at playing well-heeled characters.”

Others who have been promoted as the next Archibald Alexander Leach include Bruce Willis (when he had hair), Pierce Brosnan (before he serenaded Meryl), Mark Wahlberg, Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashton Kutcher and Ewan McGregor. (The McGregor analogy makes no sense whatsoever. He obviously is the next Christopher Plummer.)

Vanity Fair noted this trend almost a decade ago, identifying Frankie Muniz, TV’s Malcolm in the middle, as the most inexplicable nominee. When told that a critic had described him as “the Cary Grant of kid stars,” Muniz replied, “That’s cool… but I don’t know who Cary Grant is.”

Is James McAvoy The New Crow? Rumour has it that he's in talks 26 February 2013 | Written by Owen Williams | (EMPIRE ON LINE)

Relativity's reboot of James O'Barr's The Crow has been thrashing around in development for ages now. Last we heard, a year or so ago, attached star Bradley Cooper and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo had both left the project. The Crow refuses to stay dead, however, and word this morning is that James McAvoy is in talks to wear the leathers and the corpse paint. F. Javier Gutierrez is the man currently in the director's chair.

We are slightly dubious about this news, since BD seem disinclined to talk about any sort of source for their scoop. But they point out that they previously correctly announced Mark Wahlberg's brief involvement, so maybe they have a secret insider source. McAvoy seems like an odd choice, but we wouldn't necessarily have pegged him for Professor Xavier either, and look how well that worked out.

Michael Fassbender gets around - Filming “Frank” in Ireland, “The Graham Norton Show” and the BAFTAS (AMY ANDREWS - IRISH CENTRAL)

It was a pretty busy weekend in London for Irish/German actor Michael Fassbender, who left his Irish film set (he’s making Frank there with Maggie Gyllenhaal) to appear on the popular TV chatfest The Graham Norton Show, and take in the BAFTA ceremony and after-parties.

Poor Michael got an awful ribbing from Norton, the Cork-born comic and host who has made quite a big name for himself in the U.K.  Mark Wahlberg was a fellow guest (and an inebriated looking one at that!), and both he and Norton zoned in on Fassbender’s private parts which were on full display in his breakout film Shame last year.

Fassbender took it all in his stride, and confided that his mother saw Shame with a bunch of her friends at a movie theater in Tralee (he was raised in Co. Kerry by his parents, who own a restaurant in Killarney).

Christian Bale And David O. Russell May Reunite On American Bullshit (CINEMA BLEND)

Author: Katey Rich

After his little boxing movie The Fighter blew up into an Oscar-winning phenomenon, David O. Russell spent a long time figuring out what his next movie would be before finally settling on The Silver Linings Playbook, with Bradley Cooper, Juennifer Lawrence and Julia Stiles among others in the starring roles.

With that film wrapped up and Mark Wahlberg's sequel to The Fighter finally moving on without Russell, the director is now planning another move, and may circle back to another one of his Fighter stars.

According to Deadline Russell is now attached to direct American Bullshit, set up at Sony and with Christian Bale potentially attached.

Kate Winslet; Leonardo DiCaprio talks about his life and choosing Titanic because of Kate Winslet (THE SUN)

"Titanic? I would love to say I predicted it would be one of the biggest hits in film history. I didn't — and wondered whether I should do it at all.

"I resisted it for a long time because I had been offered the film Boogie Nights (about the 1970s porn industry, a role finally taken by Mark Wahlberg).

The fact that Kate Winslet said "yes" was the final decider. "She was awesome. We were definitely shoulders for each other to lean on. We had to be partners on the film. All the complaining in the world was done between us two, so we did not have to vent it on anyone else.

"But I am so glad to be part of that movie. Years from now, people will still be watching that film. "I am part of something historical, in a lot of ways. It gave me so many opportunities, as an actor, to steer the course of my own destiny. "I was able to take both my mother and grandmother to the world premiere of Titanic in London — one of my proudest moments."

Taylor Swift joins 'Les Miserables': Will her star power motivate you to go to the movies? (EW.com)

Was yesterday a casting fairy tale for Taylor Swift? It was reported yesterday that the country-pop superstar is likely to play Éponine in the big-screen musical adaptation of Les Misérables.

So far, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Helena Bonham Carter are all signed on, and Amanda Seyfried is in talks to play Cosette. More than any of the other casting choices, though, Swift’s inclusion changes the dynamic of Les Mis and begs the question: Will the fan base of a bankable artist like her have any impact on ticket sales?

As a musician with only cameo-sized roles in feature films so far (if we’re calling Valentine’s Day a proper film), Swift doesn’t necessarily bring the proven acting chops to the table of, say, Crowe or Bonham Carter. What she does bring is a massive, highly committed fan base. But will it pay off?

So far, the jury’s still out for Justin Timberlake, whose big-screen appearances actually seems to have made his fans more vocal in support of his music career. Mandy Moore, who more often than not sings in her films, has seen middling success as an actress. Likewise, Jon Bon Jovi has thrown his hat in the acting ring a few times with only meh reception in light of his ultra-successful music career.

I don’t even need to tell you how things have turned out in the multiplex for Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, and Madonna.

On the flip side, other musicians who have proven much more bankable as actors — Will Smith, Mark Wahlberg, Queen Latifah, and Robert Pattinson (who claims to have been a struggling musician pre-Twilight and who actually benefited from his songs’ inclusion on the first film’s soundtrack) — prove that box office mojo isn’t entirely borne of acting prowess. Instead, these performers seem to capitalize on an X factor that extends beyond the cultural climate and legitimate talent of historical double and triple threats including Frank Sinatra, Cher, and Barbra Streisand, to name a few.

Swift’s acting skill is still up for debate, and the fact that she is playing a singing role should certainly help her chances. Still, the question remains: Will Swift’s appeal be strong enough to get her fans in seats for a production that features none of her original music and songs that are in an entirely different genre? Do fans believe in Taylor Swift the Actress, and are they willing to put their money where their mouths are?

What say you, music fans? Which camp will Swift fall into? Can she usher in a new generation of crossover talent, or is she doomed to totter in the footsteps of Xtina? Does the presence of a hot-ticket musician up your chances of shelling out to see a movie in the theater?

JOE's Top five movies of 2011 (Joe.ie)

Forget about the Oscars, what every filmgoer wants to know is what movie did JOE pick as its favourite for 2011. Thankfully, the wait is over.

5. The Guard

Without doubt the biggest success story in Irish cinema for many a year, The Guard and its titular character are likely to be the first two things to spring to mind when one now considers Brendan Gleeson's legacy. Oh, and it will certainly be essential viewing anyone looking to see Don Cheadle get insulted as Gaeilge by someone repairing a lamp.

With diametrically opposed stars in the seemingly apathetic Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Gleeson) and bewildered FBI agent Wendell Everett (Cheadle in masterful form), The Guard is simply one of the finest Irish movies and directorial debuts (John Michael McDonagh, brother of In Bruges director Martin) we've ever seen.

4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Let's face it, the idea of rebooting the Planet of the Apes franchise sounded like a horrible one a year ago, while we admit to mocking the seemingly poor CGI of the apes in question when saw the first trailer. The laughs were on us, however, when we sat down months later and watched the smartest Hollywood blockbuster of the year.

In retrospect, they should've just let the apes take the bridge
With a tight script and an astonishing performance from Andy Serkis (whose motion-captured portrayal of ape Caeser is gaining Oscar buzz), Rise of the Planet of the Apes works hard for the emotional intensity that punctuates its final act.

In a world where ADD-addled action directors can't go five minutes without an explosion, the film leaves the action aside until the last 20 minutes and instead focuses on a myriad of themes, from animal exploitation to what it means to be human. That's pretty ambitious for a $100m+ project.

3. Senna

As our reviewer wrote earlier this year at the release of this stunning feature: "Who’d have thought a documentary consisting purely of archive footage of the career of a racing driver could be so compelling?"

Pieced together from thousands of hours of raw footage, Senna is the incredible yet tragic story of the F1 legend and is quite simply must-see viewing for everyone, no matter your personal taste in racing.
Both enthralling and ultimately heartbreaking, this painstakingly recreated documentary provides the narrative, pace and memorable moments that any live-action version could hope for, which is probably the highest compliment we can pay to filmmaker Asif Kapadia.

2. The Fighter

Following its Oscar glory (Best Supporting Actor for Christian Bale, Best Supporting Actress for Melissa Leo) in early February, it's easy to forget that The Fighter hit Irish cinemas very early this year. Hyped as the best boxing movie since Raging Bull, critics and audiences were quickly won over by a tale of family ties, overcoming the odds and perhaps the most frightening gaggle of sisters in cinematic history.

We believe that Wahlberg downed a can of spinach or two before this scene

While Bale's goggle-eyed scenery-chewing is probably what many will immediately take from their initial viewing of The Fighter, repeated watches have opened us up to the understated work from Mark Wahlberg - possibly one of the most maddeningly inconsistent actors in Hollywood when you consider his chequered filmography.

It's Wahlberg's performance that helps anchor Bale's sometimes cartoonish approach and it's a shame that he was so resoundingly overlooked in the awards season.

1. Drive

Of all the movies that Ryan Gosling starred in this year (we'd estimate that it was at least 11), he may never top his role in Drive, where his near-silent protagonist evoked comparisons to the great Steve McQueen.

Making what is in a retrospect a fairly rubbish jacket look good, all to the best film score in years, Gosling's magnetic presence ensured that he would never again be derided by men as "that guy from The Notebook". An impossibly stylish modern take on the noir genre, Drive is easily our film of 2011 - even if not everyone agrees.
