Martin Freeman on 'SNL': 3 Sketches You Have to See

Best known to American audiences as the star of Peter Jackson's Hobbit franchise and as "hey, that one guy!" from Love Actually, British actor Martin Freeman definitely had something to prove on last night's Saturday Night Live – mainly, of course, that he's funny. Freeman's background in comedy might not come across while he's traipsing around Middle-earth, but there was no arguing with his comedic chops once he took the stage for a funny and exceedingly well-timed monologue. If Freeman had the first-time jitters, they weren't apparent here, and the newbie host effectively introduced himself and his style with ease and amusement.

That ease translated to a mostly well-run show that offered up a wide variety of jokes and sketches, sprinkled liberally with holiday cheer and a dash of wacky weirdness. Freeman easily fit in with the rest of the cast, and though he never got showy or over-the-top or exceedingly "host-y," his presence was a solid and consistent one. Freeman will definitely have to return for more shows and, if he continues to show the kind of skill and comfort he exhibited last night, we just might be on our way to a new classic SNL host. Save him a space in the Five-Timers Club, Timberlake.

Emily Blunt was, well, extremely blunt recently about her experience as a first-time mommy breastfeeding her cutie-pie daughter, Hazel. We're all so used to hearing only positive reactions from celebs who have chosen to nurse, and there may be a great reason for that -- breastfeeding obviously has a good many benefits. But let's be real. It can also be difficult. And strange. Especially if it's your first time feeling the sensation of your breasts filling up with milk and waking up in the morning to find that your boobs resemble inflated balloons.

The actress didn't hold back on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and shared exactly what she thinks about breastfeeding -- and how hubby John Krasinski is doing his part as a good partner to support her.

Emily told the tale of where she was and what was running through her mind the minute her milk came in. It was 3 a.m., she says, and she was sneaking into the bathroom when John woke up. She turned around and gave him the shock of a lifetime -- two "enormous" and "veiny" boobs that were like something out of a "horror movie."

It’s a girl for Emily Blunt and John Krasinski! The married actors welcomed their first child, a baby they named Hazel, today, according to a post John made on Twitter.

“Wanted to let the news out directly. Emily and I are so incredibly happy to welcome our daughter Hazel into the world today! Happy bday!” the new dad tweeted excitedly.

It’s the first child for both Emily, who is best known for her roles in Devil Wears Prada and the British TV series Gideon’s Daughter, and John, who starred on The Office. The couple has been married since 2010.

Martin Freeman has revealed that he receives more fanmail for Sherlock than The Hobbit.

The actor, who is currently shooting the final scenes for the last film in the Hobbit trilogy, said that he is better known for his BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch than Peter Jackson's movie franchise.

He told The Independent: "I get more 12-year-olds coming up to me than I used to. But, I promise, I still have a lot of conversations with people that have no idea who I am. Which is great for me as I usually just want to eat a bowl of pasta in peace.

"I'd have been quite happy being known as 'Tim from The Office' and now Bilbo Baggins and John Watson have come along. 

'Sherlock' is one of the biggest things I will do, ever - we could never have predicted that level of insanity around the series. I think that gets me more fan mail than Bilbo. Not that I think I am the biggest deal in the universe."

He added: "If someone had a pint with me, they'd find out pretty quickly I'm not so nice, I'm not Tim from The Office, although a lot of people still think I am. I have absolutely no problem telling someone to f**k off."

It's only been a few weeks since the US version of The Office aired its final episode.

But the sitcom's favourite couple Pam and Jim Halpert had a little reunion in New York on Tuesday night.

John Krasinski took his real life spouse Emily Blunt to see Jenna Fischer make a dramatic turn in Neil LaBute's new Off-Broadway play Reasons To Be Happy.

John and Emily appeared to be enjoying the cultured evening out as they leisurely strolled to the Lucille Lortel Theatre in the hip neighbourhood of Greenwich Village.

Despite being married since July 2010, the pair looked like newlyweds as they doted on each other while showing their support for Jenna, 39.

Reasons To Be Happy showcases a dramatic turn in the television sitcom actress' career as she tackles the often challenging material concocted by Tony Award nominated playwright LaBute.

According to MCC theatre, who is producing the satiric drama: 'Reasons to Be Happy is a funny, surprising, and poignant new play about the choices and sacrifices we are willing to make in the pursuit of that often elusive ideal: happiness.'

The Off-Broadway production began previews in mid May and will officially open on June 11.

Martin Freeman may be making the transition toward film like his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, but he doesn't want to leave the series behind either. Freeman, who is currently filming season three of the series with Cumberbatch, told Empire that he would like to keep going beyond a fourth season.

"I believe in doing things for as long as people love them, and all I can say is that I really love the show," he said. "I feel very loyal to it and I like doing it… for as long as they want to do it and as long as we all want to do it....I don't know if I'll be doing it at the age of 90 but for the foreseeable I'm a huge fan of the show."

A new image from The World's End has been released.

The long-awaited third film in Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy - following 2004's Shaun of the Dead and 2006's Hot Fuzz - centres on five friends who reunite to recreate a pub crawl from their teenage years.


Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Eddie Marsan appear in the image as the five, who unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

Pegg's character Gary is described as a 40-year-old man clinging desperately to his teenage years, while Frost's Andy is a successful lawyer.

Freeman, Considine and Marsan play the other three friends - an estate agent, a rocker-turned-architect and a car dealer respectively.

Martin Freeman: Sherlock night shoots hard (INDEPENDENT WOMAN)

Martin Freeman has admitted he is not looking forward to filming the new series of Sherlock in blizzard conditions.

The Hobbit star - who was crowned Best Actor at the Jameson Empire Awards - has just begun filming the new series of the hit TV show with Benedict Cumberbatch, and faces long night shoots during the icy weather.

Martin said: "We're going to be in Bristol tomorrow doing exteriors, and I think it will be freezing.

"I don't know whether it's actually snowing in Bristol at the moment, but either way it will be very, very cold and it will be hard - because we're doing nights as well."

The former star of The Office confessed he felt a bit embarrassed at the awards ceremony after realising his green suit and red shirt matched his gong perfectly.

Surfers, bodybuilders, rollerbladers and bikini-clad babes are the usual people filling up Venice Beach and it's boardwalk, but Martin Freeman and his family brought a traditionally British picture to the sandy shores of LA.

Looking like they were sat on a Cornish beach more than under the Californian sun, the 41-year old Hobbit actor, his wife Amanda Abbington, 39, and two kids were certainly wearing more clothes than the usual sunbather.

In the Modish style of '80s England, Martin and his son wore gingham, tartan and buttoned up shirts while Amanda opted for a straw trilby hat and light-coloured jersey and linen.

The actor - who played Tim in the BAFTA award-winning mockumentary (The Office) - will instead be joining a wealth of celebs all ready to be interviewed by Graham Norton as he attempts to set a Guinness World Record for 'Most Questions Asked on a TV Chat Show'.

Called Comic Relief's Big Chat with Graham Norton, the Irish presenter will be enjoying a (hopefully) record-breaking chinwag with actors James Nesbitt, Warwick Davis and Russell Tovey, supermodel Elle Macpherson, presenters Paddy McGuinness, Alex Jones, Steve Jones, Kirstie Allsopp, and eccentric chef Heston Blumenthal.

Martin Freeman starred in one of the lengthiest movies of 2012, but Friday night he was honored for his work in films with much shorter runtimes and much smaller budgets than the 169-minute-long Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. At the third annual ShortsHD Shorts Awards, Freeman picked up the Visionary Actor Award.

The English actor has continued to make short films, even after performing in high-profile projects like BBC’s Sherlock and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

“I love doing [short films] for the same reason that everyone in this room really likes them – because very often it’s the time that you get to really express an idea or ideas without someone breathing down your neck or without someone arguing about how big your trailer is,” Freeman told the audience gathered at the Paley Center for Media last night. “No one’s getting rich or famous out of it, but people are actually trying to express something – and it doesn’t take 18 months like The Hobbit does.”

Martin Freeman says Sherlock is one of the best shows he has worked on.

The Hobbit actor stars in the BBC drama as Dr John Watson, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as detective Sherlock Holmes.

"Sherlock is one of the best written things I'll ever do. If I live to 100, I won't do many things that are better written than Sherlock," he said.

"Same with The Office, which was a perfect half-hour of comedy for my taste. As a fan, I'd like it."

Martin admits he looks for both physical and intellectual challenges in roles.

"Dr John's quite physical because he's a soldier, so he's a man of action, he's handy with a gun and has been shot on the battlefield.

"When something is well written and you get to run around and fire guns and chase people but also have fantastic dialogue, that's when it's most pleasurable."

Sherlock will be back on BBC1 for a third three-part series in 2013.

It is something that, 13 years ago, she thought might never happen.

Born in Roehampton, South-West London, Emily is the daughter of highly successful barrister Oliver Blunt and Joanna, a teacher and former actress.

Emily lived her early life in the shadow of her older sister Felicity and, as a youngster, developed a stutter. She overcame it in her teens, but still had trouble finding her way.

Hers was an intellectual and high-achieving family and at 16 she was desperate to follow her sister, who is 18 months older, to the sixth form at Westminster School.

But it wasn’t to be. ‘She’s very close to me,’ says Emily, ‘and I wanted to be like her. But I wasn’t offered a place and I remember thinking, “My life is over.” I recall reeling around the kitchen and thinking, “I’m a failure, I didn’t get into that school.” It was so awful and upsetting.’

Disappointed at her failure to emulate Felicity’s academic prowess, Emily began to lose her way.

Record Breaking Downton Abbey Scores Almost 8 million Viewers in the US (CONTACT MUSIC)

British sensibilities often don't really translate in the USA, the humour doesn't cut the mustard when coming out of an American mouth, which is why Skins, The Inbetweeners and The Office (okay, it's good, but without Gervais or Sheen... close, but no cigar) haven't been quite as far reaching as their UK counterparts. However, Downton Abbey has captured the American imagination's version of England; posh toffs, big houses and lots of tea. Because of this, it's extraordinarily successful.

The show airs on PBS and as Reuters reports: "[T]he ratings for season 3 [of Downton Abbey] quadrupled the average viewings for PBS primetime shows, which usually is 2 million viewers, and nearly doubled the premiere of the second season, which kicked off with 4.2 million viewers in January 2012." The most recent episode to air on the public network saw the wedding between Matthew and Lady Mary Crawley... finally! The romance had been burgeoning for the first two seasons, fans loved that they finally tied the knot.
