Sean Bean joins Matt Damon in the cast of Ridley Scott's film of The Martian...

DEN OF GEEK
Simon Brew 10/21/2014 at 10:04AM

The human movie spoiler returns. Sean Bean, next to be seen on the big screen in The Wachowskis' delayed Jupiter Ascending, has landed a role in Ridley Scott's upcoming adaptation of Andy Weir's book, The Martian.

Bean joins a cast that includes Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, and Jessica Chastain. And he'll be taking on the role of NASA's flight director in the movie. Having read the book over the past week, unless there's a significant detour taking with the screenplay, this role is going to offer something radically different for Bean: survival chances.

Christian Bale the frontrunner to play Steve Jobs in Aaron Sorkin's biopic

E Entertainment

Christian Bale

It's been in gestation for some time, but now it looks like the long-awaited Aaron Sorkin-scripted, Danny Boyle-directed biopic of Steve Jobs has found its man.

Batman, to be precise. (groan)

Christian Bale is close to signing a deal to play the founder of Apple, beating out competition including Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

According to reports, Bale is currently in negotiations for another film which have stalled, allowing Bale to consider the role.

Gone Girl's David Fincher was initially attached to direct the as-yet untitled Jobs biopic, but dropped out due to issues over creative control and his fee.

Meanwhile, Aaron Sorkin's HBO series The Newsroom enters its third and final season after the show was unceremoniously dropped from the station after a dismal first season and a slightly-improved second season.

Initial thoughts? Bale is a solid actor and he's known for total immersion in whatever role he takes on. He's never going to half-arse it so we can be sure that he'll be giving it socks.

Hugh Bonneville: Matt Damon is Front and Center in First 'Monuments Men' Poster

The Monuments Men poster

ROPE OF SILICON
BY: BRAD BREVET PUBLISHED: SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH 2013 AT 10:30 AM

The film is based on the true story of an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements.

Matt Damon Responds to Cumberbatch Bro-Date Request

By Kase Wickman
Jul 30, 2013 1:29 PM

Remember Benedict Cumberbatch's totally adorable man crush on Matt Damon? The time that he told Vulture, "Do you have Matt's number? Can you pass along a message, and tell him that Benedict is a big fan and would like to hang? That would be brilliant."

Well, Ben — can we call you Ben? — wish granted.

NextMovie sat down with Damon this morning while he was promoting the sci-fi blockbuster "Elysium" and broached the subject of the possible budding bro-dom between the two. We brought up young Benedict's dream, to have a "hot night where we're all getting drunk and dancing and having a good time!"

Damon said he hasn't yet met Cumberbatch, alongside whom he is nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, but that he'd love to grab a beer with him sometime.

Hugh Bonneville takes wife Lulu Evans on set as he films The Monuments Men... and introduces her to silver fox George Clooney By EMILY SHERIDAN and LOUISE SAUNDERS (MAIL ON LINE)

Leading lady: Hugh Bonneville was joined on the set of The Monuments Men by wife Lulu Evans on Monday afternoon

She was playing the dutiful wife by going to visit her husband, Hugh Bonneville, on the set of his latest movie The Monuments Men.

And Lulu Evans was no doubt thrilled to find herself in the company of none other than Hollywood A-lister George Clooney as the group got to work on location at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

Hugh, 49, was kitted out in full army regalia as his leading lady arrived on set on Monday afternoon.

The pair seemed to be enjoying themselves as they enjoyed an arm-in-arm stroll around the picturesque countryside location while soaking up the warm afternoon sun.

But it wasn't long before something caught Lulu's eye, and the couple immediately made their way over to join silver fox Clooney in the director's chair.

The Hollywood hunk appeared to be getting on like a house on fire with Bonneville's wife, with the group chatting away together amiably as they relaxed in the sunshine.

‘Downton Abbey’ season 4: Hugh Bonneville back after filming with George Clooney (CARTER)

While the entire cast of “Downton Abbey” is understandably bound to secrecy until season 4 premieres on ITV this fall, we are at least hearing some interesting news now that has to do with the world of scheduling. When you have a show with so big a cast, this can be a nightmare, especially when there are people looking to take on as many different projects as possible.

However, what we are hearing now is that the show is certainly as accommodating as possible, and even arranged the schedule of star Hugh Bonneville so he could spend a week filming in a different part of Europe. The actor has a part in the film “The Monuments Men” written and directed by George Clooney, which has been filming in Germany ever since the end of the Academy Awards. In a new post on Twitter, Bonneville’s on-screen wife Elizabeth McGovern confirmed that the actor had just returned to start up “Downton Abbey” work following his time away:

Gary Oldman, Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren, MOVIE, THE MOVIE (CINEMA BLEND)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=w3NwB9PLxss#!

  Author: Katey Rich

There are a whole lot of silly Oscar night traditions to choose from, from the opening song-and-dance to the Best Song performances to the "shocked" speeches from people everyone knew would be winning. But I'd like to add a pretty recent tradition to the list: Jimmy Kimmel's "Movie the Movie." The ABC late night host will have the prime post-Oscar slot again this year, and will be back with the parody that set the Internet on fire after last year's Oscars. Except, in the grand tradition of movies, it's not just a new parody: it's a sequel. Welcome to Movie The Movie: 2V.

Michael Fassbender and Jake Gyllenhaal in the running to play Lance Armstrong (entertainment.ie)

Last Saturday we reported the news that there would be a Lance Armstrong biopic coming our way, with Lost creator JJ Abrams at the helm. We then asked you which actor you thought would best portray the cyclist's fall from grace. With tongues already wagging in Hollywood, there's since been a bunch of names thrown into the mix and we couldn't agree more with the following two suggestions; Bradley Cooper and Michael Fassbender. Both have the chops to pull it off, both have the looks and athletic physique too. It's the folk at Ladbrokes who bring us this news, announcing a 3/1 odds for each actor.

When asked by the BBC about the possibility of bringing Armstrong's story to the big screen, Cooper (whose currently enjoying the lead up to the Oscars on the back of his performance in Silver Linings Playbook) expressed his interest by saying: "I think he's fascinating. What a fascinating character. I remember Matt Damon was going to do his autobiography at one point years ago. I remember thinking, that would be a great character, I'd love to play that character. I would love to do something, I think he's pretty fascinating."

The idea began life in America, where performers such as Matt Damon and Bob Dylan supported the scheme. Author and editor Anthony Arnove has now brought the idea to the UK, where a cast including Ian McKellen and Rupert Everett will perform at the Tabernacle in Notting Hill, west London, on 16th September.

Canongate will publish an accompanying book, The People Speak, on 13th September priced at £17.99, compiled by Firth, Arnove and historian David Horspool, collecting a range of speeches, songs and letters from British history by writers including Emmeline Pankhurst and Oscar Wilde

Emily Blunt: I tailed Anthony Hopkins (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

Emily Blunt followed Sir Anthony Hopkins around "like a bad smell".

The British actress has established herself as one of Hollywood's brightest talents, but she still feels star struck around famous faces. Emily had the opportunity to work with Anthony on 2010 movie The Wolfman and she made no secret of her admiration for the Oscar winner.

"I followed him around like a bad smell... I loved him so much," she told Total Film. "Everything is just simmering underneath and you can't take your eyes off him. That ease he has is something I've really tried to adopt."

Colin Firth, David Beckham: How some of the hot Hollywood romances began (WHERE TO BE SCENE)

Ever wondered how the loved-up A-list managed to hook-up in the first place? We reveal all…
By Gemma White, Editor, Scene magazine Published: 00:00 March 15, 2012

Colin Firth and Livia Giuggioli

"It was love at first sight," says Colin of setting eyes on his wife-of-15-years on a film set in Italy back in 1996, calling her "this Italian beauty and smartest woman on the planet." And marrying her the following year in Umbria, the Oscar winner admits it wasn't easy winning over his in-laws, revealing of his job and the fact he came with a son from a previous relationship, "I'd shown up as this very, very dodgy commodity, attached to their darling daughter… I had a mountain to climb to win everyone over."

David and Victoria Beckham

David admits to having had Posh on his radar for a while when she was at the height of her Spice Girls fame. After watching a cat-suited Victoria in the group's Say You'll Be There video, David spilled, "I saw Victoria and I told myself, ‘I'm going to marry that girl.'" Adding, "I think it was both love and lust. Well, it was probably lust." And Victoria reveals of their first meeting, "It was after a soccer match, and all of the players were in the players' lounge. David was sitting in the corner with his family. From the moment I met him, I knew that he wasn't a bloke-y bloke."

Minnie Driver: 'I was young and I fell for Matt Damon' (TELEGRAPH)

By Jessica Salter
12:25PM GMT 01 Mar 2012

We were taking a break from filming a really pivotal scene in Good Will Hunting, and Matt Damon and Gus Van Sant, the director, were having an intense chat about the script – they changed a lot of it as we went along and they often broke off to have serious discussions.

I think I'm laughing at Ben Affleck, who was just out of frame Рhe is a very funny guy. This scene was important; it is the moment where Skylar, my character, keeps asking Will Hunting, Matt's character, how he can do her organic chemistry paper in five seconds flat, when it takes her four weeks to figure it out. Matt had been at Harvard, and the idea for Good Will Hunting came out of a writing assignment РWill Hunting is a genius who is forced to see a therapist, played by Robin Williams, and study advanced mathematics with a renowned professor, played by Stellan Skarsg̴rd, in order to avoid going to jail.

He and Ben developed the script purely so they could have a shot at being actors. At this point they were completely unknown, but I had left drama school at 21 and made Circle of Friends (1995), Big Night and Sleepers (both 1996) and Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), which was just out and quite a big hit, so I was on a bit of a roll.

6 Celebs Who Are Actually Actors And Writers

About 3 hours ago by Marina Szaven
ben-affleck-and-matt-damon
Although the standard line is “what I really want to do is direct,” some celebrities take their fame and talent to the page. There are many celebrity autobiographies or painful attempts at poetry that have been produced, but there are only a few individuals who manage to match their extroverted acting ability with the more introverted talent of telling a story with a pen. These five celebrities are rare examples of actors who not only write, but actually write well.
steve_martin
Steve Martin. First there was the absurdist stand-up comedy which made Steve Martin a superstar. Routines like “King Tut” and his "Saturday Night Live" skits demonstrated his ability to craft a funny and strange bit. His early writing on the “The Smothers Brothers” or the film scripts for his own star vehicles like “The Jerk” and “L.A. Story” seemed like an extension of his act. Then Martin took a surprisingly literary turn with the play, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” that gave audiences a sense of his artistic breadth. He has continued to write well-received written works like the novella “Shopgirl,” and has published short works in the crème-de-la crème for writers, “New Yorker” magazine. As if those accomplishments were not enough, he plays a mean banjo, juggles, and has been noted for his impressive art collection. From wearing an arrow through his head to the heights of the literary world, Steve Martin may have moved beyond multi-talented to overly talented.
carrie fisher
Carrie Fisher. This daughter of Hollywood royalty (actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher) first made a name for herself as the iconic Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" franchise. She continued to play a variety of both lead and supporting roles in films, but after recovering from drug addiction she put her talent on the page with a semi-autobiographical novel “Postcards from the Edge.” Fisher has continued to write novels, as well as a successful memoir “Wishful Drinking,” while also earning impressive money as a Hollywood script doctor on films such as “Hook” and “The Wedding Singer.” With a unique and compelling life story, she has managed to pursue both sides of her career simultaneously, while exploring her struggles with drugs, bi-polar disorder and early stardom.
Emma_Thompson
Emma Thompson. This British powerhouse has not only received recognition for both her acting and writing abilities, she has the rare distinction of also winning Oscars in both categories. Already considered an accomplished stage actress in Britain, she became Hollywood royalty with her Best Actress statuette for "Howards End." After working on an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” for almost a decade, she finally brought it to the screen with director Ang Lee and won the Oscar for screenwriting as well as a Best Actress nomination. She continues to take on iconic arts, such as Sybill Trelawney, the professor of divination, at Hogwarts in the "Harry Potter" series. She has also written and starred in the “Nanny McPhee” films, while doing an impressive amount of humanitarian work.
james franco
James Franco. The ubiquitous Mr. Franco has been everywhere at once: hosting the Oscars, attending graduate school, displaying art exhibits, and performing in Oscar-nominated roles (“127 Hours”) and soap operas ("General Hospital”). Surprisingly, Franco’s first love was English literature, which he majored in at UCLA and only took an acting class to deal with his shyness. After reaching movie stardom, he returned to college and started pursuing a PhD. but also found time to publish “Palo Alto: Stories by Franco.” The book of connected short stories may have received uneven reviews but their high brow inspiration was clear.
ethan-hawke
Ethan Hawke. From teen stardom in “Dead Poets Society,” Hawke has maintained an interesting if somewhat uneven acting career. He balances dark roles, like the Oscar-nominated rookie cop in “Training Day” with cult hits like “Reality Bites” and “Before Sunrise.” At the same time, he has written very un-Hollywood novels such as “The Hottest State” and “Ash Wednesday.” He also received an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay “Before Sunset.” Hawke has balanced his film career and literary endeavors with a dedication to New York theater. While his output may not be to everyone’s taste, he does win points for his renaissance spirit.

The New Yorker: The Best Films of 2011

The Best Films of 2011

perm_2011-year-in-review_p154.jpg
“Hugo”—In Martin Scorsese’s wondrous 3-D masterpiece, you feel like you’re inside a giant box with the entire history of the cinema playing on the walls. The movie is intricate, touching, a reverent summing up of the past of movies, and a triumphant, heart-swelling surge into the future.

“The Tree of Life”—Yes, I know, Terrence Malick’s movie is unbearably high-minded and humorless. But still! There are sequences that rival the greatest things ever done in movies, especially the long family episodes with Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and the little boys, in which the camera floats around the characters, and all of eternity is summoned in the minutest motions of love and rage. Brad Pitt gives an amazing performance; he’s a shoo-in for the Oscar.
tree-of-life-family.jpg
“Margin Call”—Or, as Werner Herzog might put it, Der Sheisse fliegen in der Whirligig, i.e., the bottom falls out of the mortgage-backed derivatives market. J. C. Chandor’s first feature film is sparely but eloquently written and perfectly played by a large cast whose attitudes towards one another, in the roles of financial executives, mutate through a long day from wary collegiality to outright hatred or desperate loyalty. The movie has a keen, bitter sense of the sudden breakdown of preposterous illusions. Great performances by Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, and even Demi Moore.

“Certified Copy”—In Abbas Kiarostami’s puzzling fable, a British art historian (William Shimmel) and a French gallery owner (Juliette Binoche) meet, seemingly for the first time, in Arezzo, and take off for a day of sight-seeing in the village of Lucignano. For their own amusement, they play at being married. Or are they really married? In the end, we realize that both stories are true; that both have been woven together in a double-sided fiction abut the varieties of intimacy. Beautifully shot in Lucignano, with a hand-held camera that smoothly recedes as the two, walking together, quarrel and flirt in the handsome stone village.

“A Separation”—This somber but spirited look at the concentrics spreading out from the break-up of an attractive and intelligent couple—its effect on elders, servants, children—holds you from first to last. An Iranian film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi.

“Contagion”—A businesslike, unexaggerated vision of catastrophe. Steven Soderbergh’s depiction of a new toxic virus spreading, well, virally, is frightening in its sober-minded attention to specifics. Some people wanted more filmmaking excitement, but the plainness and sureness of the movie are its greatest virtues.

“The Descendants”—Nothing could be more suggestive of the screwed-up nature of Hollywood’s current business arrangements than the seven-year wait for a new movie from Alexander Payne (“Sideways”). In this lovely film, the director takes his time, pausing for observation, reflection, puzzlement, but there are two clear, intersecting story-lines: The cluelessness of a father (George Clooney) who has to take care, for the first time in his life, of his two daughters; and the debate within a large family over what to do with a large hunk of virgin property on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The movie asks: Who shall inherit Hawaii?

“J. Edgar”—Clint Eastwood does his best to inject some soul into the creaky biopic form in this epic portrait of the F.B.I. director as a mother-dominated man whose furious sexual self-suppression erupts into a broadly authoritarian drive. By casting Leonardo DiCaprio as the young Hoover, the movie traces how an attractive young man thickens with power and age. Armie Hammer is suavely appealing as Hoover’s lifetime inamorata Clyde Tolson.

“Source Code”—Duncan Jones’s crackerjack time-travel thriller injects Jake Gyllenhaal into a speeding train booby-trapped with bombs. The entire thing is wild fantasy, of course, but the separate eight-minute segments of Gyllenhaal looking for the bombs are shot in real time, and the suspense is terrific.

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”—The best use of digital in a big commercial movie this year. The apes, injected with DNA intended to prevent Alzheimer’s, become super intelligent, and develop humanish traits like empathy. But then their inner apeness comes out, and they climb and jump all over San Francisco. Enormous fun. Directed by Rupert Wyatt.
