Michael Fassbender sightings in Bay Area as Steve Jobs shoot carries on, seeks extras

OK, who cares if Michael Fassbender looks nothing like Steve Jobs? Hotness feelers are out and tingling in anticipation of stumbling into the star in black turtleneck guise as shooting of “Steve Jobs,” the Aaron Sorkin-penned, Danny Boyle-directed biopic based on the 2011 Walter Isaacson biography, continues around the Bay Area. Yes, this is cinematic reboot at the center of the hacked Sony email upchuck/uproar that embarrassingly saw Sorkin allegedly griping to Sony/Columbia Pictures chairman Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin, “I don’t know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn’t going to care.”

 Sorkin later came around, writing that Fassbender is “a great actor whose time has come.” Understandable since the actor has proven himself fully capable of heating up the shadows and turning on the nuance when it comes the most troubled or villainous characters, from “Shame”‘s sex addict to the “X-Men” franchise’s Magneto to “12 Years a Slave”‘s rapey plantation owner.



So Fassbender fans have been getting dreamy about running into the hunk as he hunkers down to chomp broccoli amid the crunchy, high-’70s hippie coziness of La Med in Berkeley, holes up in the garage of Jobs’ childhood home in Los Altos, strolls the bland office parks of Silicon Valley, or maybe even introduces a benighted NeXT product or two at Davies Symphony Hall. This week yielded a blurry yeti-like sighting at a SF cafe — though that grainy backside could belong to any ole “toothy-smiled Irish/German sex god” (as the F— Yeah, Michael Fassbender! Tumblr puts it).

New Steve Jobs movie starring Michael Fassbender, Seth Rogen, Kate Winslet, shooting in Berkeley

A new movie about Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender (as Jobs), Seth Rogen (as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak), Kate Winslet and Katherine Waterston, is coming to Berkeley on Friday for some location shooting.

Filming will take place in and around La Méditerranée restaurant at 2936 College Ave., and will be concentrated during nighttime hours — Friday, Jan. 23, from 6 p.m. through Saturday, Jan. 24, at 6 a.m. — to mitigate the impact on the neighborhood, according to an email put out by District 8 Councilwoman Lori Droste.

The new movie, not to be confused with the 2013 movie Jobs, featuring Ashton Kutcher, is dripping with A-list credentials. As well as the starry actor line-up, the film is being directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionnaire), according to IMDB, with a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network, The Newsroom), based on the biography of Jobs written by bestselling author Walter Isaacson.

The film, which centers on the launch of three key Apple products in the 1980s and 1990s, is said to have been inspired by a 2013 article in The Atlantic headlined “The Definitive Story of Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Phone Phreaking.”

The movie is shooting in locations around the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Cupertino, and at the site of Jobs’ Los Altos childhood home in whose garage it is said Apple had its genesis.

Producers have been casting extras for the movie and were looking in particular for “men between the ages of 18 to 40s with long hair and facial hair to match the 1980s to 1990s time periods.” Women should have “natural hair colors, and no chunky highlights or modern hair styles,” the call-out, published on Project Casting, said.

For the Berkeley shoot, the film requires “café patrons and pedestrians … all ethnicities, some with cars manufactured in ‘83 or earlier.” The listing also noted that only union actors would be able to take part, due to the small number of extras needed.

There will also be smoking “as a sign of the times.” According to the listing, “Smoking will be permitted indoors/outdoors as a sign of the times on this day; must be willing to work around smoke. If willing to smoke, please note in submission, tobacco-free alternatives will be provided.”

Emails about Michael Fassbender leaked in Sony hack just a day after another described Angelina Jolie as a 'brat'

Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin claimed that he had no idea who Michael Fassbender was according to the latest tranche of embarrassing emails leaked as part of the Sony cyber-hacking scandal.

The emails reveal, however, that others at Sony were aware of the actor - or at least the size of his manhood - with producer Michael De Luca allegedly claiming in one email that the star, 'makes you feel bad to have normal sized male genitalia.'

The actor gained notoriety after playing Brandon Sullivan in 2011’s sexual exploration movie Shame and appearing in a full-frontal nude scene that revealed an impressive appendage.

The latest leaks concern Sony’s failed attempts to make a movie about the life of Apple co-funder Steve Jobs, which Sorkin was adapting from Walter Isaacson’s biography.

The emails reveal Sorkin’s attempt to lobby for Tom Cruise to take the lead role and reveal his initial disdain when informed that Fassbender, Oscar-nominated for 12 Years A Slave, was favored for the role.

‘I don't know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn't going to care,’ was his sniffy reply to Columbia Pictures Chairman Amy Pascal and movie producer Scott Rudin.

It was Rudin who called Angelina Jolie a 'minimally talented spoiled brat' in another email, while the latest leak of documents by the group calling themselves ‘the Guardians of Peace,’ are from Pascal’s email box.

Her exchanges with Rudin and Sorkin reveal that an extensive list of Hollywood big hitters had been considered for the Jobs role.




However Sorkin eventually came round to the idea of Fassbender and wrote, 'F*** it. He's a great actor whose time has come.'

'That’s where I ended up,' Pascal replied.

'Yeah, if the movie’s good, he’ll be on the cover of everything and get nominated for everything,' Sorkin conceded.

Sony producer Michael De Luca chimed in with one email adding that the star, 'makes you feel bad to have normal sized male genitalia'.

It’s a tough Jobs but somebody’s got to do it.

With Christian Bale parting ways on the project, Sony has moved quickly to find the man to portray the late Apple founder Steve Jobs in a biopic.

Michael Fassbender is in early talks to play Jobs in the the Sony film that Danny Boyle is directing, sources confirm. Based on Walter Isaacson's biography Steve Jobs, the real-life drama is directed by Danny Boyle and written by Aaron Sorkin. Seth Rogen is in talks to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Sorkin has publicly said the movie will be divided into three long scenes, each taking place backstage before one of Apple's famous product launches.

Christian Bale the frontrunner to play Steve Jobs in Aaron Sorkin's biopic

It's been in gestation for some time, but now it looks like the long-awaited Aaron Sorkin-scripted, Danny Boyle-directed biopic of Steve Jobs has found its man.

Batman, to be precise. (groan)

Christian Bale is close to signing a deal to play the founder of Apple, beating out competition including Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

According to reports, Bale is currently in negotiations for another film which have stalled, allowing Bale to consider the role.

Gone Girl's David Fincher was initially attached to direct the as-yet untitled Jobs biopic, but dropped out due to issues over creative control and his fee.

Meanwhile, Aaron Sorkin's HBO series The Newsroom enters its third and final season after the show was unceremoniously dropped from the station after a dismal first season and a slightly-improved second season.

Initial thoughts? Bale is a solid actor and he's known for total immersion in whatever role he takes on. He's never going to half-arse it so we can be sure that he'll be giving it socks.

The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels has giving a stinging assessment of America's attitude to important current affairs.

The 57-year-old actor plays the anchorman in the new HBO Aaron Sorkin drama series.

He told CBS News today: 'I think there are many [messages on the show.] However, one of them, specific to that, is that I don’t think we’re informed anymore as a country.'


'I think we have the attention span of a gnat. You know, with cell phones and Twitter.... we don’t know as much as we need to know.'

The controversial show, dubbed a 'lefty gas-cloud' by Fox News, has been a lightning rod for conservative critics since it debuted June 24.

He continued: 'Especially in a presidential election, when there’s a lot more marketing of political candidates going on than actual stances on issues, it seems.

'I think the American electorate should work a little harder at getting informed. That includes hearing, truly listening, to what the other side is saying. Whether you’re left or right....start paying attention.'


The series, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes events at the fictional Atlantis Cable News channel, also stars Sam Waterston and British actors Emily Mortimer and Dev Patel.
