Michael Fassbender sightings in Bay Area as Steve Jobs shoot carries on, seeks extras

SF GATE
By Kimberly Chun on February 18, 2015 8:52 AM

OK, who cares if Michael Fassbender looks nothing like Steve Jobs? Hotness feelers are out and tingling in anticipation of stumbling into the star in black turtleneck guise as shooting of “Steve Jobs,” the Aaron Sorkin-penned, Danny Boyle-directed biopic based on the 2011 Walter Isaacson biography, continues around the Bay Area. Yes, this is cinematic reboot at the center of the hacked Sony email upchuck/uproar that embarrassingly saw Sorkin allegedly griping to Sony/Columbia Pictures chairman Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin, “I don’t know who Michael Fassbender is and the rest of the world isn’t going to care.”

Sorkin later came around, writing that Fassbender is “a great actor whose time has come.” Understandable since the actor has proven himself fully capable of heating up the shadows and turning on the nuance when it comes the most troubled or villainous characters, from “Shame”‘s sex addict to the “X-Men” franchise’s Magneto to “12 Years a Slave”‘s rapey plantation owner.

So Fassbender fans have been getting dreamy about running into the hunk as he hunkers down to chomp broccoli amid the crunchy, high-’70s hippie coziness of La Med in Berkeley, holes up in the garage of Jobs’ childhood home in Los Altos, strolls the bland office parks of Silicon Valley, or maybe even introduces a benighted NeXT product or two at Davies Symphony Hall. This week yielded a blurry yeti-like sighting at a SF cafe — though that grainy backside could belong to any ole “toothy-smiled Irish/German sex god” (as the F— Yeah, Michael Fassbender! Tumblr puts it).

Seth Rogen films scenes with Michael Fassbender on new biopic based on the Apple founder's life

DAILY MAIL

On-screen alter-egos: Michael Fassbender (as Steve Jobs) and Seth Rogen (as Steve Wozniak) filmed scenes for the new biopic based on the Apple founder's life in California on Friday

Michael Fassbender has just begun filming his role as Steve Jobs in a new biopic about the Apple founder's life.

And he was joined on the set of the film in Cupertino, California on Friday by his co-star Seth Rogen.
The actor - who normally takes on comedy roles - is taking on the role of Jobs' Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the Danny Boyle-directed movie.

Fassbender started filming scenes for the long-awaited biopic earlier in the week, resembling the technology icon as he was back in 1984, the period in which the film is set.

And he was joined for filming by Rogen, who looked to be completely embodying Jobs' famous colleague Wozniak, sporting a full beard and typical 1980s garb.

He appeared to have completely put behind him the recent furore surrounding the infamous Sony hacking and his movie with James Franco The Interview, which depicts an assassination attempt against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Meanwhile, 37-year-old Fassbender looked just like Steve Jobs in a sharp oversized suit and bow tie, his usually-bearded face cleanly shaved for the role with his hair grown out and slicked back.

In the midst of filming, the actors were seen talking to director Boyle in the idyllic, leafy location, set near the site where Apple Inc. has its famous headquarters.

There was no sign on Friday of the film's newest recruit, Kate Winslet, who was recently revealed to be taking on the role of former Macintosh marketing chief Joanna Hoffman.

The movie has had a tumultuous birth, going through a long list of directors and actors before settling on the current line-up, with most of the behind the scenes turmoil spilling out into the public domain during last year's infamous hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The rights for the book on which the film is based, Walter Isaacson's biography Steve Jobs, was initially purchased by Sony, with David Fincher tipped to direct, and Christian Bale set to play the eponymous lead.

New Steve Jobs movie starring Michael Fassbender, Seth Rogen, Kate Winslet, shooting in Berkeley

BERKELEYSIDE
Berkeley, CA independent news site
January 22, 2015 1:10 pm by Tracey Taylor

A new movie about Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender (as Jobs), Seth Rogen (as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak), Kate Winslet and Katherine Waterston, is coming to Berkeley on Friday for some location shooting.

Filming will take place in and around La Méditerranée restaurant at 2936 College Ave., and will be concentrated during nighttime hours — Friday, Jan. 23, from 6 p.m. through Saturday, Jan. 24, at 6 a.m. — to mitigate the impact on the neighborhood, according to an email put out by District 8 Councilwoman Lori Droste.

The new movie, not to be confused with the 2013 movie Jobs, featuring Ashton Kutcher, is dripping with A-list credentials. As well as the starry actor line-up, the film is being directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionnaire), according to IMDB, with a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network, The Newsroom), based on the biography of Jobs written by bestselling author Walter Isaacson.

The new movie about Steve Jobs is based on the biography of the Apple co-founder by Walter Isaacson. Photo: Creative Commons

The film, which centers on the launch of three key Apple products in the 1980s and 1990s, is said to have been inspired by a 2013 article in The Atlantic headlined “The Definitive Story of Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Phone Phreaking.”

The movie is shooting in locations around the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Cupertino, and at the site of Jobs’ Los Altos childhood home in whose garage it is said Apple had its genesis.

Producers have been casting extras for the movie and were looking in particular for “men between the ages of 18 to 40s with long hair and facial hair to match the 1980s to 1990s time periods.” Women should have “natural hair colors, and no chunky highlights or modern hair styles,” the call-out, published on Project Casting, said.

For the Berkeley shoot, the film requires “café patrons and pedestrians … all ethnicities, some with cars manufactured in ‘83 or earlier.” The listing also noted that only union actors would be able to take part, due to the small number of extras needed.

There will also be smoking “as a sign of the times.” According to the listing, “Smoking will be permitted indoors/outdoors as a sign of the times on this day; must be willing to work around smoke. If willing to smoke, please note in submission, tobacco-free alternatives will be provided.”

Benedict Cumberbatch: Breaking the code to stardom

EXPRESS
By: Robert Paisley
Published: Sun, November 16, 2014

The rise and rise of Benedict Cumberbatch has taken him from Harrow School via a Tibetan monastery to Baker Street and Hollywood. Now the next stop may be the Oscars thanks to his role in new movie The Imitation Game.

"It's been a lovely sort of slow build and this is just a great time," says the newly-engaged star, who says what surprises him most about his ascent is his sex symbol status.

"I am not a typical beauty," says Benedict, 38. "Mine is a weird face; a cross between that of an otter and something people find vaguely attractive. I've got a long face and a long neck which, for an actor, is useful in period roles. So my approach has been to wear high collars in period dramas and to turn my collar up in 21st-century dramas, like Sherlock."

His acting abilities are far more extensive and first bloomed 25 years ago when he played Titania, Queen of the Fairies, at his all-boys boarding school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Benedict was a leading light of Harrow's Rattigan Society, the drama club named after old Harrovian and playwright Terence Rattigan, but before continuing his acting studies at Manchester University he spent a gap year in Darjeeling, India, teaching English in a Tibetan-run monastery.

"It was such a different environment from what I had left and I learnt far more than I taught during that year," he says.

Benedict emerged with a Zen-like calm that has served him well in showbusiness, and having actors as parents has helped him cope with career fluctuations.

"I had two parents who had lived with all the perils. I knew what the negatives were so when they hit I was prepared for them and just grafted on," says Benedict of Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. They also played his parents in Sherlock.

Benedict made his mark playing classic roles in small theatres before graduating to leading parts at the prestigious Royal Court, Almeida and National Theatre.

He returns to the London stage for 12 weeks next summer, in what he describes as "a little play called Hamlet at the Barbican". Tickets for his return to Shakespeare sold even faster than concerts by One Direction and Beyonce.

His television career began with guest spots in Heartbeat and Spooks and then leading roles as Stephen Hawking, Guy Burgess and Vincent Van Gogh before his mercurial magic as Sherlock in 2010, but Benedict almost turned down the role.

"It was such an iconic character, the most filmed one in all of fiction, so I knew it would be a very exposing role with a lot of focus on it and I wondered if I really wanted to take that step into the limelight.

"It was such good material, though, that I took it and I'm glad I did as it is great fun to play the number one consulting detective and high functioning sociopath.

"I was amazed at how vocal and immediate the response was from the TV audience. All that tweeting and blogging was a new experience for me and overwhelming."

With Sherlock an instant hit, suddenly Benedict was in demand for movies. After smaller roles in British films Starter For Ten and Atonement he suddenly had Steven Spielberg casting him in War Horse, joined the all star cast of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and then Danny Boyle recruited him for the National Theatre's Frankenstein.

"It might seem like that whole momentum came from one particular role but Steven Spielberg had not actually seen me in Sherlock at that time, neither had Danny Boyle nor Tinker Tailor director Tomas Alfredson. What these people do with their spare time I don't know!" Playing Peter Guillam in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was a special thrill for Benedict because he had long wanted to be a spy, on screen or in reality.

JAMES MCAVOY: Movie Review: In Danny Boyle's Trance, McAvoy, Dawson and Twisted Memories Posted: 04/04/2013 6:28 pm CARYN JAMES (HUFF POST)

Playing a sophisticated London auctioneer, James McAvoy gazes into the camera with cool, nerveless clarity as his voiceover gives us the inside tricks of protecting and stealing a painting. This opening sequence of Danny Boyle's Trance is no more than exposition with a dash of red herring, and shouldn't work at all. Yet it does because McAvoy's voice is so captivating, already layered with deception and delusion, and because Boyle's visual creativity sweeps us along.

We zoom into the auction room; we're in a van with a gang of mercenaries hired by the auction house in case of trouble; a black and white flashback shows us the good old days when it was easy to steal a Rembrandt. Keep in mind how well McAvoy and Boyle save this opening; that will be extremely relevant to the ending of Trance, a film that looks like a heist movie wrapped in a memory puzzle, but is itself a kind of red herring.

For a good long time, it is also fun to watch, with Simon (McAvoy) in the middle of the action when robbers rush in to steal a Goya painting that has just sold for over 27 million pounds. As he has been trained to do, Simon grabs the painting to carry it to a safe place, but is thwacked on the head by the mastermind behind the crime, Franck (Vincent Cassel), and loses his memory of what he did with the Goya. Maybe a hypnotherapist, Elizabeth (Rosario Dawson), can help?

Very quickly, we're led to wonder who was really involved in the theft, then who's double or triple-crossing whom. This is Boyle from an excellent vintage: his first feature, the delicious dark comedy Shallow Grave (1994) plays the same game of whom do you trust? Is there any honor or truth among thieves? In Trance, we also wonder about the weird coincidences and lapses in Simon's recovered memories. At first, the looping, Rococo plot unfolds with such ease that we barely have time to realize there's a French robber and an American hypnotist in London, as if they were the U.N. of thugs and therapists.

Flitting back and forth between present-day scenes and memories, Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (their many films together include Slumdog Millionaire) create a sleek, almost photorealist London, with flashbacks and memories so sharp and bright it's deliberately hard to know what's real and what's not.

Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller: Danny Boyle shares details on "Trainspotting 2" (CBS)

Oscar-winner Danny Boyle has been highly regarded for his directing work with films like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours," but he may owe it all to his 1996 breakout hit, "Trainspotting." The drug-fueled dark comedy starred Ewan McGregor as a young Scottish hooligan who gets addicted to heroin with his friends. It became a sleeper hit and helped launch Boyle, as well as McGregor, to stardom. "Trainspotting" was loosely based off of a novel by Irvine Welsh, who penned a follow-up book called "Porno" in 2002. At the New York premiere Tuesday night of his latest psychological thriller, "Trance," Boyle spoke with CBSNews.com about his plans to make a "Trainspotting" sequel and revealed to us that it won't be a strict adaptation of Welsh's "Porno."

Danny Boyle admits he treated Ewan McGregor 'badly' Casting of 'The Beach' caused a rift between the previously close collaborators By Ben Arnold (YAHOO MOVIES)

Danny Boyle has said that he treated Ewan McGregor badly over the casting of his film 'The Beach'.

The director, who had cast McGregor in his films 'Shallow Grave', 'Trainspotting' and 'A Life Less Ordinary' snubbed McGregor in favour of Leonardo DiCaprio for the adaptation of Alex Garland's gap-year essential.

“We didn't treat him very well, I've got to be honest about it, we didn't behave at our best,” he told Jonathan Ross.

“You learn and we've apologized  We made this film called The Beach, and we gave Ewan the impression we were going to cast him in it and we didn't cast him in it, we cast another actor, a wonderful actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who was a lovely guy, they're both wonderful.

“You think you're moving up, it's the illusion that you think you're moving up, therefore you're going to need a bigger star to sell the movie. You learn to stick with your roots.”

Boyle also added to the excitement around the possibility of a sequel to 'Trainspotting', based on Irvine Welsh's book 'Porno'.

As it happened, I ended up caring deeply for him, both as the brave, indomitable Tracie, and as the heartbreakingly lonely Simon, in the first of Jimmy McGovern's four-part drama examining the British justice system.

Simon was a man we could all relate to - undervalued at work in his classroom, consoled by literature at home, this was a tragic, timeless everyman, except this being Jimmy McGovern and 2012, his only solace was transforming himself into Tracie and hitting in the town in a frock.

Sean Bean in Simon mode, betrayed by his secretly married lover

Although Tracie's breasts were a little cartoonly pneumatic, Bean has revealed in recent interviews that he also realised in them great statements of power, and this became clear as he fought off derisive comments and stares from all around. He may have been lonely and fearful, but he was no victim.

Benedict Cumberbatch on fame, science and his new Radio 3 play, Copenhagen (RADIO TIMES)

EXCLUSIVE: we talk to the Sherlock star as he tackles Michael Frayn's modern classic with Simon Russell Beale and Greta Scacchi

Jack Seale
2:50 PM, 11 January 2013

Benedict Cumberbatch is at a point in his career where he needn't say yes to any project if he doesn't fancy it. The star of the biggest drama on British TV, Sherlock, he's proved himself on stage in Danny Boyle's innovative, award-sweeping reinvention of Frankenstein, and will become a proper Hollywood star this summer thanks to a major role in feverishly anticipated nerdgasm Star Trek into Darkness – a casting that director JJ Abrams says was "a formality" after one viewing of a Sherlock DVD.

At this rate, by 2014 Cumberbatch will simultaneously be playing Batman, Superman and James Bond – but even if that happens, on present form you can bet he'll still be a regular presence on good old BBC radio.

Christmas Day on Radio 4, just before the Queen's speech: there he was as the young Rumpole of the Bailey. Then on Wednesday, the Radio 4 sitcom Cabin Pressure came back for series 4 with Roger Allam, Stephanie Cole and, yes, Benedict Cumberbatch all returning as the staff of a tiny airline.

Now he's on the wireless yet again, playing German nuclear scientist Werner Heisenberg in a new version of Michael Frayn's modern classic play Copenhagen (Sunday 8.30pm Radio 3). The three-hander has a cast from the velvet-lined box inside the top drawer: Simon Russell Beale is Heisenberg's Danish former mentor Niels Bohr, while Greta Scacchi takes the ultimately crucial role of Bohr's wife Margrethe. Exalted company, but Cumberbatch is the big name.

The play premiered in 1998 and is a famously knotty beast, concerned with the details of atomic physics and the insoluble question of whether, when Heisenberg visited Bohr in 1941, he was trying to glean info that might help the Nazis get the bomb, or warning Bohr that Hitler wanted it. The three protagonists discuss this meeting after their deaths.

"I never saw a production of it," says Cumberbatch when RT visits during a break in recording at Broadcasting House in London. "So I'm probably going to piss a lot of people off who want to hear it the way they last heard it. There's no way I can impersonate that.

"These are such extraordinary people with so much on their shoulders. So much of what they did affected so many people. It's a ripe topic for drama and he's just a master, Crazy Phrasey Frayn. He's brilliant."

The Impossible: Is Ewan McGregor Finally Getting The Praise He Deserves? (CONTACT MUSIC)

Ewan McGregor's stunning turn in Juan Antonio Bayona's The Impossible is being lauded by critics left, right and center, with some suggesting it may be the Scottish actor's finest turn since Trainspotting. Of course, the disaster-epic is a very different film from Danny Boyle's 1996 classic, and it's the first time McGregor has played a father or family man.

The movie tells the true story of a family's experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. It had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, where it received critical acclaim. Following its full release, Empire magazine dubbed it a "rousing, superbly acted, no-holds-barred melodrama is a mighty feat of physical film making." Peter Bradshaw mused, "This film is not especially complex, and not subtle, but there is judgment and intelligence in the simple idea of survival being the most agonizing thing, and making survivor guilt the psychological aftershock of a shattering and irreparable blow."

Danny Boyle’s Trance – First Images With James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel – UPDATED With More Posted on December 27, 2012 by Brendon Connelly (BLEEDING COOL)

Danny Boyle‘s next is a do-over of Joe Ahearne‘s 2001 TV movie Trance, a noirish twister about an art theft gone wrong.

In the film version, James McAvoy plays the inside man at the gallery who gets a good bash on the head and forgets who he is – and where he’s hidden the painting. A hypnotherapist is called in to try and unlock these memories and the story is quickly revealed to be a blend of the real, the remembered and the imagined.

There’s a piece on the film in the current issue of Empire magazine – the iPad version of which is going for just 69p right now, so check it out for yourself.

Ewan McGregor denies ruling out return as Renton (SCOTSMAN.COM)

EWAN McGregor has denied turning down the chance to
reprise his role as Renton in Porno, the new film based on an Irvine Welsh book. The Scottish actor’s starring role in Trainspotting is one of his most iconic parts. It had been widely reported that McGregor turned down the chance to star in a movie version of Porno – which is set nine years after Trainspotting.

However, writing on Twitter, the actor insisted he had not been approached. After a fan asked why he had turned down the role, the 41-year-old said: “I’ve never been offered Porno. Never seen a script. “Never had a call from anyone to make that film.” His comments prompted fans to tweet novelist Welsh, urging him to get McGregor on board. One follower, Shane Campbell, wrote: “It would be a blockbuster! Make it happen!”

Bloody Pics Of James McAvoy A Reminder That Danny Boyle's 'Trance' Is On The Way For 2013 NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH SEPTEMBER 25, 2012 2:36 PM (INDIEWIRE)

You may have forgotten, given the brouhaha of Danny Boyle's celebrated London Olympics opening ceremony thingy, that he actually has a new movie on the way. "Trance" started filming last September, with the plan to start editing once the director's duties with the mega sporting event were over. Well, that time has arrived and today brings with it some new/old snaps from the movie. Yes, they landed last fall, but here they are as a reminder of what's in store.

Starring a promising cast including James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel, the film tells the story of an assistant at an auction house (McAvoy) who masterminds a heist and teams up with a gang of thieves led by Cassel, only to suffer a blow to the head and wake up with amnesia. As the only person who knew the location of the stolen painting, the assistant is then subjected to analysis from a hypnotist as the gang begin to suspect duplicity. Dawson will play a character who has a relationship with both men. According to Boyle's Facebook page, the movie is "coming in 2013" and we'd guess some kind of festival bow will be in the works.
