JUDE LAW, EWAN MCGREGOR LINKED TO CUMBRIAN MAN'S SUB RESCUE FILM

TIMES AND STAR
September 1, 2013

Former Royal Navy submariner Roger Chapman was aboard Pisces III, a 6ft deep-sea submersible which was trapped on the Atlantic Shelf for three days from August 29, 1973.

Mr Chapman, who was 28 at the time, was working on a contract to bury transoceanic telephone cables.

He was trapped alongside father-of-four Roger Mallinson 1,575ft beneath the waves 150-miles off the coast of Ireland before an 84-hour international rescue operation brought them back above the surface, as concerns mounted that their oxygen supplies would run out.

Mr Chapman, 68, has been in talks with Giant Films regarding the translation of his story to the cinema screen and A-listers Ewan McGregor and Jude Law are among the stars interested in recreating the story for the movie version.

He said: “It’s not my call but if Ewan McGregor is interested and wanted to go for playing me it would be nice. I think that this company want to stick to the story.”

After being rescued the pair were greeted by hundreds of people and Mr Chapman said he was “euphoric” on release.

Episode VII Rumor Says Ewan McGregor Will Play Obi-Wan Again

Latest Star Wars: Episode VII Rumor Says Ewan McGregor Will Play Obi-Wan Again image

CINEMA BLEND

Author: Katey Rich | published: 2013-08-16 12:24:46

If you want to start your own Star Wars rumor, now is the time. With nothing officially confirmed about the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII beyond the director and writer, there's a limitless universe full of story options, and any rumor can be treated as fact because, hey, who knows what might happen. And fresh off some specious talk that Emperor Palpatine might appear in Episode VII comes a new rumor of a familiar face who might bring back The Force.

So what hard proof do we have? None. And it's been like that for every Star Wars rumor we've fielded since the project was announced last fall, from the Ryan Gosling casting news to talk of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill reprising their roles. It's all talk, as notoriously secretive director J.J. Abrams preps the project to shoot in England early next year and keeps the lid on his "mystery box" to the point that there were booing fans at Disney's D23 convention last weekend. Ewan McGregor's potential return isn't exactly the kind of news fans have been salivating for all these years… but hey, it would be a start. At this point if Abrams and company would even confirm a title it would be progress.

Ewan McGregor: It's a 'Star Wars' reunion as Ewan McGregor joins 'Jane Got a Gun' MOVIESMAY 7, 2013BY: TRAVIS HOPSON (EXAMINER)

Back when they were so young and innocent

It looks like producers on the troubled western Jane Got a Gun have finally had enough of the casting woes, and have decided to use the Force to fix everything once and for all. The problems they've had are well documented, but in particular it's been difficult casting the role of the main villain, John Bishop. Michael Fassbender, Jude Law, and until recently Bradley Cooper were attached at various stages, but now it's going to be a Star Wars reunion of sorts as Ewan McGregor has joined the cast.

McGregor rejoins his Star Wars prequel colleagues Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton (he played Uncle Owen in Attack of the Clones) in the film, which follows good girl Jane Hammond, who seeks to defend her home from the vicious Bishop Boys when her bad boy husband (Noah Emmerich) comes home full of bullets after turning on them. Her only means of survival is to look for help from Dan Frost (Edgerton), a gunslinger and ex-lover.

Ewan McGregor: Watch Ewan McGregor in His 1993 Film Debut ‘Family Style’ Features By Christopher Campbell on February 24, 2013 (FILM SCHOOL REJECTS)

Short Starts presents a weekly short film from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career.

Twenty years ago, a young Ewan McGregor began his acting career with a short film made for Channel 4 called Family Style. The 11-minute, black and white effort was also the directorial debut of Justin Chadwick, whose latest, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, was just acquired for distribution by The Weinstein Co. Back in 1993, McGregor still had long hair, a look you’ll find familiar if you’ve seen Shallow Grave, and was far from being a great actor. His crying scene in Family Style is pretty awful. But look at what two decades does for a guy, going from a breakthrough role in Trainspotting to portraying a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and working with Woody Allen, Baz Luhrman, Peter Greenaway, Todd Haynes, Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, Ron Howard, Steven Soderbergh and Roman Polanski, earning two Golden Globe nominations… And now co-starring in a big budget, live-action adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk (Jack the Giant Slayer). Well, he’s mostly had great run.

Scottish star Ewan Mcgregor is seriously considering a stint on the Broadway stage - and he'd love the project to be a musical.

Return of the Jedi! Ewan McGregor reprises Obi-Wan Kenobi look as he grows a new beard By MIKE LARKIN (MAIL ON LINE)

It would have been quite the double take for Star Wars fans.

For actor Ewan McGregor had gone back to his Obi-Wan Kenobi look when he walked through an airport in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

It is almost certain it was the Scottish hunk who was padding through busy LAX rather than this being an Attack of the Clones however.

Ewan McGregor Joins 'Snowtown' Director Justin Kurzel's John Le Carré Adaptation 'Our Kind Of Traitor' NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH JANUARY 17, 2013 9:40 PM (INDIEWIRE)

First announced last spring, "The Snowtown Murders" director Justin Kurzel's adaptation of John Le Carré's "Our Kind Of Traitor" has been moving slowly. There was a brief flick of life in November when it was reported that Mads Mikkelsen, Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain were rumored for roles. But now it seems the first actor has come aboard, and it's none of those names.

According to the usually plugged-in Baz Bamigboye, Ewan McGregor has joined the picture in an unspecified lead role. The film, penned by Hossein Amini ("Drive," "Snow White and the Huntsman"), follows an English couple who get mixed up with a Russian businessman who turns out to be an oligarch, and one of the world's biggest money launderers. They get caught up in his plans to defect and are soon positioned between the Russian Mafia and the British Secret Service, neither of whom they can trust. We presume McGregor is one half of the English couple.

The Impossible: Is Ewan McGregor Finally Getting The Praise He Deserves? (CONTACT MUSIC)

Ewan McGregor's stunning turn in Juan Antonio Bayona's The Impossible is being lauded by critics left, right and center, with some suggesting it may be the Scottish actor's finest turn since Trainspotting. Of course, the disaster-epic is a very different film from Danny Boyle's 1996 classic, and it's the first time McGregor has played a father or family man.

The movie tells the true story of a family's experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. It had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, where it received critical acclaim. Following its full release, Empire magazine dubbed it a "rousing, superbly acted, no-holds-barred melodrama is a mighty feat of physical film making." Peter Bradshaw mused, "This film is not especially complex, and not subtle, but there is judgment and intelligence in the simple idea of survival being the most agonizing thing, and making survivor guilt the psychological aftershock of a shattering and irreparable blow."

Ewan McGregor Talks About “The Impossible” And Family POSTED DEC. 26, 2012, 6:00 AM BEVERLY COHN / EDITOR-AT-LARGE (SANTA MONICA MIRROR)

It is no accident that the perennial youthful and stunningly handsome Ewan McGregor is an international acting treasure who has racked up a list of impressive credits earning him the Number 9 spot on Channel 4’s Greatest Movie Stars of All Time.

His breakout role was in “Trainspotting” in which he played a heroin addict and since then starred in such films as the prequel trilogy of “Star Wars” playing Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, the love-struck poet in “Moulin Rouge,” the son in both “Big Fish” and “Beginners,” as well starring roles in “Black Hawk Down,” “Cassandra’s Dream,” “Emma,” “Ghost Writer,” and “Angels & Demons.” Theatre trained, McGregor also received accolades for his stage performances in “Guys and Dolls,” and “Othello.”

His latest film, “The Impossible,” is the heart-wrenching story of a family’s struggle for survival in the wake of the horrifying tsunami that hit Thailand the morning after Christmas in 2004. One of the worst natural disasters in history, it tells the story of determination and bravery under unimaginable conditions. McGregor plays Henry, the father and co-stars with Naomi Watts as his wife, Maria, and three wonderful young actors who play their sons – Tom Holland (Lucas), Samuel Joslin (Thomas), and Oaklee Pendergast (Simon). The film is a monument to honoring the best that human beings can be in the face of unspeakable carnage.

McGregor recently sat down with a group of select journalists to discuss the film, along with personal revelations, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

What this family went through is beyond belief. Did you meet the father who you played as Henry?

Ewan: I met him when the family came out to Kolok (Thailand) where we were shooting, after about a month of filming. I did have telephone calls with him. They are a Spanish family, but we decided not to play them as a Spanish family, so I felt like I was concentrating playing the guy on the page. The character in the script is Henry and I used the things I learned from the real father about his experience, but also things I learned from other survivors. I met this amazing woman in London who was very gracious and told me her story. She lost her husband in the tsunami and she has three children and her story is very similar to my character’s in that she was with her two younger kids and her husband and eldest daughter were separated. She didn’t know where they were. So her experience and journey was very similar to his (Henry) in that she was looking for them. She would find somewhere safe to leave her kids and then she would search for her daughter and her husband.

Ewan McGregor made Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie cry (FANSHARE)

Jolie hosted a special screening of the film in London, boasting about the performances, especially from Ewan McGregor [who plays the father and husband].

When she spoke before the screening, she addressed her comments [via USA Today] directly to Ewan, who was seated in the audience, and said, "I have known you for years and you are one of my favorite actors and I've always loved to watch you, but I watched this and I didn't recognize you.  To say it is one of the best performances of the year, really doesn't give it credit, because it doesn't feel like a performance. It's from such an honest place and so deeply emotional."

OSCARS: Behind The Scenes On ‘The Impossible’ Ewan McGregor (DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD)

When the production team behind Summit’s The Impossible met with 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami survivor Maria Belon at a quiet coffee shop in Barcelona in the spring of 2008, they weren’t certain that she would agree to have her family’s harrowing story told in a feature film. Producer Belen Atienza knew they were in for an emotional afternoon—she was the one who first heard Belon’s story on the radio, a drama so profound that it left Atienza in tears after it concluded. But Atienza, director Juan Antonio Bayona, screenwriter Sergio Sanchez—who have a shorthand from working together on Bayona’s Spanish-language horror hit The Orphanage—gained Belon’s trust in a simple way: They listened.

“We were all really nervous,” Atienza recalls about the initial meeting. “She talked for three and a half hours. It was exhausting for her and for us. We didn’t open our mouths—we were just listening—and she was extremely thorough.”

The resulting film, an almost unbelievable tale of one family’s struggle to reunite amidst a country’s horror and loss, stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, whose performances started some Oscar buzz after the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September. The Impossible also has the benefit of being cofinanced and distributed by a studio familiar with nurturing films through awards season, Summit Entertainment, which was behind the Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker in 2008. The Impossible doesn’t open in the United States until December 21, but it has already earned the distinction of having the biggest opening weekend in Spain’s boxoffice history, with $13.3 million on 638 screens.
