The family feud that haunts Atonement star James McAvoy

 MAIL ON LINE
December 18, 2013

You could hardly blame actor James McAvoy for being a little bleary-eyed as the black limo deposited him outside the Beverly Hills mansion.

It was now past 2am, but Atonement's leading man and his actress wife Anne-Marie Duff were determined not to miss Prince's post-Oscars soiree.

Despite his tiredness, McAvoy was elated. He had earlier presented an award in front of Hollywood's finest at the 80th Academy Awards ceremony.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in the poverty-stricken area of Drumchapel in Glasgow, the actor's father, James McAvoy Snr, was hard at work atop a roof.

Tired from his morning's labours, roofer McAvoy Snr was further drained by a late night of his own.

He had tried - but failed because of the eight-hour time delay with Los Angeles - to stay up to watch his son's big Oscar moment.

But the small television screen in his cramped Glasgow flat is perhaps as close as McAvoy Snr will ever get to his son.

Poignantly, he hasn't spoken to James for 21 years.

The 29-year-old actor is notorious for being fiercely private, rarely talking about his family circumstances or relationship with Anne-Marie.

Perhaps it's little wonder he is less than forthcoming about his background.

For the Mail has discovered that behind the diminutive actor's seemingly effortless rise to fame lies a heartbreaking story of a broken family, a violent half-brother and a hard childhood on one of Glasgow's most notorious council estates.

Today, his lonely father can only marvel from afar at his son's success.

"It has been hard on me not being in his life, but I'm just glad that he seems happy," says James Snr, ruefully.
"I hope one day he'll get in touch. I was amazed he'd done so well."

Hearing McAvoy's clipped upper-crust English vowels as Robbie Turner in Atonement, many fans will be unaware the actor hails from such humble Scottish beginnings.

McAvoy spent his turbulent early life in a terrace council house on the graffiti-decorated 1950s Drumchapel housing estate, where he was raised by his maternal grandparents James and Mary Johnstone.

Butcher James and wife Mary, whom McAvoy still regularly visits, were his role models when they took him in aged seven, following his mother Elizabeth's split from his father.

Psychiatric nurse Elizabeth, or Liz as the family prefer, suffered from "poor health" so felt her son James, and daughter Joy, then five, would be better off at her parents' home a few streets away.

Roofer Mr McAvoy, 50, explains: "We were a very happy family and for a long time there were no problems.

"James was a real daddy's boy - we would go swimming and play football together. We didn't have a lot of money, but we got by."

But childhood sweethearts James and Liz "grew apart" and, by their late 30s, had divorced.

"Our son took it hard," says McAvoy Snr.

"He just wasn't the carefree little boy he'd been before."

At first, father and son continued their relationship, with James Snr taking his son swimming or to watch Celtic football team.

But when a year later James Snr moved in with a new lover, Mary McKinnon, the eight-year-old McAvoy refused to have anything to do with his father.

"I think James still had hopes of me and his mum sorting things out," claims McAvoy Snr.

"He started refusing to see me because he didn't like Mary. In the end I took a step back rather than upset him."

The young McAvoy demonstrated his steely nature when a few years later he was larking around in the playground of the St Thomas Aquinas secondary school in Drumchapel and spotted his father working on the school roof.

"James just looked away without saying a word," recalls his father sadly.

It does, however, seem odd that he was so determined to wipe out of his life the man he once idolised just because of the appearance of a new lover.

Surely there must be more to the split than the reticent James Snr would have us believe.

McAvoy Jnr has himself hinted there is another side to the story.

"I can't really be bothered with it," he told one interviewer of his father's attempts to get back in touch.

"I know what happened and I know what didn't happen."

The 83-year-old James Bond star beat younger actors such as Daniel Craig and Benedict Cumberbatch to clinch the top spot.

The results, published for the first time by the Q Scores Company of New York, ranks Edinburgh-born Sir Sean the top-rated British film star and among the top 10 Hollywood actors ever.

Film studios usually pay huge fees to obtain Q Score charts, based on US opinion polls held every six months. But the firm has decided to make public their latest “Brit Q” rankings, revealing that Sir Sean, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Liam Neeson are

Britain’s most popular film actors with US audiences.

Henry Schafer, executive vice president at the Q Scores Company, said: “Awareness of Sean Connery and his appeal was strong across the country and with all age groups.

“Though not working so much in recent years he has already transcended the normal run of actors in the way people felt about him.”

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Rentrak, a film consultancy, said: “Young men still want to be Sean Connery’s James Bond.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler proudly takes his lap dog Lolita for a walk after split from girlfriend

Lucky dog: Gerard Butler took his cute pet pug for a walk in Malibu on Friday

A pug isn't the most manly of pets, but that doesn't stop Gerard Butler from walking his squash-nosed pooch with pride.

The Olympus Has Fallen star was spotted with his dog, Lolita, in Malibu on Friday as the happy pair headed out for coffee.

Dressed in a striped shirt and army green trousers, the dashing 43-year-old Scot smiled brightly and looked more than pleased with his furry date.

As for the cream and black diva trotting alongside her master, she seemed to be delighted to spend some quality time alone with the Law Abiding Citizen star.

Gerard, who is originally from the Scottish town of Paisley, recently revealed how little Lolita came into his life.

'I know it’s not politically correct to buy a dog from a pet store, but there was this one dog asleep with one eye open and its tongue hanging out,' he told Shortlist.com.  'I pulled her out and she started biting the sh*t out [of] me. I was going to leave but I couldn’t stop myself.

She may be small in stature, but Lolita no doubt fills a huge place in Gerard's heart - especially since his recent split from on-again, off-again girlfriend Madalina Ghenea.

The 6ft 2in actor began dating the 25-year-old actress and model in September 2012 but the couple have reportedly split up.

Romanian beauty Madalina, who previously went out with Leonardo DiCaprio, met Gerard when she was hired to help him promote a new razor for the Dubai-based Super Max brand.

She has most recently been linked to AS Roma footballer Marco Borriello, according to ESPNFC.com.

James McAvoy 'amazing' in Filth (PRESS ASSOCIATION)

James McAvoy is "absolutely amazing" in Filth, author Irvine Welsh has revealed.

The Scottish star plays drug-addicted and misogynistic detective sergeant Bruce Robertson in Jon S Baird's big-screen adaptation of Irvine's best-seller, alongside Jamie Bell, Alan Cumming and Imogen Poots.

"He is absolutely amazing. It's just one of the greatest acting performances I have ever seen," Irvine said.
"I think he's better than Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. He is absolutely electric and is right into the character. It's a fantastic emotional performance."

Irvine - who is promoting the release of Ecstasy on DVD and Blu-ray on August 20 - said film fans will be surprised by James' transformation.

"This is a totally different thing from anything he has ever done before. I've never seen him in that kind of role.

When you meet him in real-life, he's such a nice guy but he plays this monster, which he humanises too," the writer explained.

Gerard Butler: Cannes charity auction reject By Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY (LIVE FROM CANNES)

Sometimes even Hollywood stars get a little rejection.

Scottish stud Gerard Butler got some after he was reluctantly brought onstage at the star-studded "Carnival in Cannes Gala for Haitian Relief" on Friday night.

Director Paul Haggis thought his presence would help sweeten the pot for the big prize -- a Golden Globe weekend pass.

Haggis figured that offering tea with Butler to a potential bidder would help push the package -- which offered tickets to the best parties during Golden Globes weekend -- into a much higher range.

But the final bidder ended up buying the package and insisting, very loudly, that he didn't want Butler as part of it.

Final purchase price was more than $125,000. Total Butler added value: $0. Ouch!

Butler told USA TODAY on Saturday that it was all in good fun.

"I know the guy that bought it, he didn't need to buy tea with me," he laughed.

But he admitted that Haggis has made a fool of him before by dragging him onstage for auctions.

"No one has the ability to make a fool of me like Paul Haggis. He makes me come up and stand on stage. He makes me feel like an idiot," said Butler. "I think most of my most humiliating experiences in my whole career have been caused by Paul Haggis. He pimps me out."

The Top Five Hottest Actors From Scotland - Hunks From The Highlands (Celebrity Cafe)

When you think Scotland do you think of the Highlands or Tartan designs? Certainly Scotland is known for many things, such as golf, but it is also the country that gave Hollywood some very handsome leading man. Scottish men are both incredibly masculine and also very sexy in a very Celtic way. Here are the top five hottest Scotts in Hollywood:

Sir Sean Connery
The first actor to bring James Bond to life is the one and only 007 in the minds of many. Connery first showed us his devilish sexiness as the master spy in Dr. No. Today, despite his advocacy for a free Scotland, he is a Knight of the British Empire. Connery was also enlisted in the Royal Navy as a teenager, a popular bodybuilder in Scotland, and one of the first of the modern hunks. Nobody does it better than Sean Connery, either as James Bond, or as a man's man.

Gerard Butler
We first became crazy over Butler in the movie 300. His Scottish voice, tall frame, and burly physique, made him the heir to Connery's title as Hottest Scott. Butler almost became a lawyer until fate intervened and he went to London to try his hand at acting. Butler has since become a popular romantic leading man as well as dramatic actor. When women see Butler they can help but talk about how manly he is. His response is that all men in Scotland look like him. If you walk into a pub in Glasgow or Edinburgh, all the men have that manly appearance that Butler is known for.

James McAvoy
McAvoy was so sweet as Thomas Lefroy in Becoming Jane that many moviegoers were smitten on first sight. He was also the tragic love in Atonement and got to play a doctor in The Last King of Scotland, where his natural Scottish voice got to speak. It was all too much when he became the young Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class. McAvoy is a combination of sweet, sexy, and the boy next door with international appeal. What is most adorable about him is, like Hugh Jackman, McAvoy constantly talks about how much he adores his wife Anne-Marie Duff for being the woman of his dreams.

Ewan McGregor
We first saw him in Trainspotting as a heroin addict in Scotland. Later we found him in a romance with Cameron Diaz in A Life Less Ordinary. McGregor is enchanting on the big screen. He has both a manly appeal, sense of mischief, and classic movie star good looks.

Craig Ferguson
The late-night talk show host has a noticeable Scottish accent and wicked sense of humor. He is now an American citizen, but the land of Scotia can still call him a native son. One of these days we will really have to see him in a kilt.

Gerard Butler rises from the celluloid ashes as real-life Rambo Sam Childers

News Shopper

WITH more flops under his belt than the Easter bunny, Gerard Butler isn’t quite celluloid poison yet, but his last few films left many critics rubbing their stomachs and requiring a dose of milk of magnesia before bed.

The Scottish beefcake hasn’t had a solid box office hit since 300 and that was five years ago now.
A string of limp rom-coms followed the comic strip blockbuster but Butler is at his best when ripped, unshaven and yelling cocky one-liners at bad guys, before blowing them to kingdom come in an explosive fireball of retribution.

Review of Machine Gun Preacher ****

Fortunately, his latest outing sees him resume his role as an action hero and it’s possibly his best performance yet.

He plays Sam Childers, an ex-con and junkie who after finding “Jaay-sus”, turns his life around and travels to deepest, darkest Africa to do his bit for the Lord, leaving his long-suffering wife Lynn (Michelle Monaghan) and young daughter behind.

After an excursion into war-torn south Sudan, Sam is outraged to find the region’s vulnerable populace terrorised by a renegade militia group which forces children to become soldiers and commit unspeakable atrocities.

Review of Machine Gun Preacher ****

Shocked and moved he ignores the warnings of local government officials and builds an orphanage smack bang in the middle of the danger zone.

But providing a shelter and refuge isn’t enough for the gung ho biker and he leads armed forces into the lion’s den to retrieve kidnapped children.

Machine Gun Preacher does exactly what it says on the tin, but thankfully with The Kite Runner and Monster’s Ball director Marc Forster at the directing helm, the action is reined back in favour of exploring the more human aspects of this real-life Rambo story.

Review of Machine Gun Preacher ****

It’s an inspirational and often emotionally stirring true story about redemption, with Butler fitting the role of rebel-with-a-cause Childers like a glove, giving an impassioned and believable performance.
However, writer Jason Keller misses a trick by failing to explore the obvious paradoxes surrounding violence in the name of religion and the role of aid and charity work in impoverished countries.
Nevertheless, it’s a gripping, entertaining and eye-opening film which sets out to prove anyone with big enough balls can make a difference if they really want to and just about gets away with it.
Machine Gun Preacher (15) is out today
