Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle: Trainspotting cast members sign up for sequel

EDINBURGH NEWS
February 3, 2014

TWO of the original cast members from the iconic film Trainspotting have agreed to appear in the follow up due to be released in 2016.

Robert Carlyle, who played Begbie, and Jonny Lee Miller, Sick Boy, have signed on to star in the next instalment, which will begin shooting next year.

Trainspotting, which was nominated for an Oscar after its release in 1996, soon became one of the most famous films based in Scotland.

And now fans of the black comedy will be seeing two of their favourite characters back on the screens in time for the 20th anniversary of the original film.

Novelist Irvine Welsh said that although the business side of things was almost complete, they have yet to write a completed script, which will be loosely based around his 2002 novel Porno.

Ewan McGregor Wears Kilt to Receive Order of British Empire, Would Be "Up for" Role in Porno (E!) by Rebecca Macatee

 Ewan McGregor, Eve Mavrakis

Ewan McGregor was honored Friday at Buckingham Palace with an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his contributions to film and charity.

A place on Queen Elizabeth II's honors list is very highbrow, so the 42-year-old Star Wars hunk telling reporters he'd be up for a role in Porno seemed a bit odd. But that doesn't mean quite what you think…

McGregor starred in 1996's Trainspotting, the Danny Boyle-helmed film based on Irvine Welsh's novel of the same name. Boyle has recently spoken about making a sequel to the famed flick, based on Irvine's book Porno, and McGregor is interested, to say the least.

"I have not been approached officially, but I would be up for it and there has been talk about it happening in 2016, 20 years after we did Trainspotting," he told reporters, per the Herald Scotland. "The sequel is called Porno, so I have to be careful about saying I am doing Porno in 2016."

Clearly, though, McGregor values the films—and traditions—of his past. The Scottish actor wore a red-and-green-tartan kilt, paired with knee socks and a tie and jacket.

"I didn't have to think about it, that was always what I was going to wear," he said. "If you don't wear your kilt here, I don't know where you are going to wear it."

Ew- an! McGregor returns to red hair as he arrives back in London... but still has prominent moustache and soul patch By FAY STRANG (DAILY MAIL)

Still going strong: Ewan McGregor still had his facial hair when he arrived back in London on Saturday

He left fans scratching their chins when he stepped out last month with jet black hair and some rather impressive facial hair.

And while the look may not have grown on many it seems Ewan McGregor is pretty happy with one aspect of his new appearance – his moustache and soul patch.

The 42-year-old was spotted arriving in the UK on Saturday still sporting his new additions but with a twist as the dark dye was gone and his natural red was back in its rightful place.

The look came after he expressed interest in reprising his role for a Trainspotting sequel based on the novel Porno.

Though it seemed fitting for the sequel about friends trying to make money via the pornography business, the look was for a film he just completed filming in Mexico - Jane Got A Gun.

Ahead of returning to the UK the actor took to Twitter to discuss shooting. He wrote: 'Last night shooting on #janegotagun Thanks New Mexico for the landscape, sunsets
Also going home with a new O'Farrell's hat ;)

Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller: Danny Boyle shares details on "Trainspotting 2" (CBS)

Oscar-winner Danny Boyle has been highly regarded for his directing work with films like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours," but he may owe it all to his 1996 breakout hit, "Trainspotting." The drug-fueled dark comedy starred Ewan McGregor as a young Scottish hooligan who gets addicted to heroin with his friends. It became a sleeper hit and helped launch Boyle, as well as McGregor, to stardom. "Trainspotting" was loosely based off of a novel by Irvine Welsh, who penned a follow-up book called "Porno" in 2002. At the New York premiere Tuesday night of his latest psychological thriller, "Trance," Boyle spoke with CBSNews.com about his plans to make a "Trainspotting" sequel and revealed to us that it won't be a strict adaptation of Welsh's "Porno."

Danny Boyle admits he treated Ewan McGregor 'badly' Casting of 'The Beach' caused a rift between the previously close collaborators By Ben Arnold (YAHOO MOVIES)

Danny Boyle has said that he treated Ewan McGregor badly over the casting of his film 'The Beach'.

The director, who had cast McGregor in his films 'Shallow Grave', 'Trainspotting' and 'A Life Less Ordinary' snubbed McGregor in favour of Leonardo DiCaprio for the adaptation of Alex Garland's gap-year essential.

“We didn't treat him very well, I've got to be honest about it, we didn't behave at our best,” he told Jonathan Ross.

“You learn and we've apologized  We made this film called The Beach, and we gave Ewan the impression we were going to cast him in it and we didn't cast him in it, we cast another actor, a wonderful actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who was a lovely guy, they're both wonderful.

“You think you're moving up, it's the illusion that you think you're moving up, therefore you're going to need a bigger star to sell the movie. You learn to stick with your roots.”

Boyle also added to the excitement around the possibility of a sequel to 'Trainspotting', based on Irvine Welsh's book 'Porno'.

Ewan McGregor denies ruling out return as Renton (SCOTSMAN.COM)

EWAN McGregor has denied turning down the chance to
reprise his role as Renton in Porno, the new film based on an Irvine Welsh book. The Scottish actor’s starring role in Trainspotting is one of his most iconic parts. It had been widely reported that McGregor turned down the chance to star in a movie version of Porno – which is set nine years after Trainspotting.

However, writing on Twitter, the actor insisted he had not been approached. After a fan asked why he had turned down the role, the 41-year-old said: “I’ve never been offered Porno. Never seen a script. “Never had a call from anyone to make that film.” His comments prompted fans to tweet novelist Welsh, urging him to get McGregor on board. One follower, Shane Campbell, wrote: “It would be a blockbuster! Make it happen!”
