James McAvoy: Movie review: Filth (5 stars)
DAILY RECORD
By Garry McConnachie
September 23, 2013
ADAPTING an Irvine Welsh novel for the big screen can be fraught with danger. Especially following the outstanding Trainspotting.
Some have tried - and failed - to make the transition work. Most recently Rob Heydon's Ecstasy was met with critical and public derision.
However, Scots director Jon S Baird could be set to step out from the shadow of Danny Boyle's 1996 effort with Filth - one of the most ballsy and in-your-face black comedies to hit the big screen in quite a while.
Those who have read the book will know all about the debauched exploits of Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy). For those who haven't, he's an Edinburgh police officer. To say he's an extreme character would be doing him a disservice. Happy to snort coke on the job, sleep with a colleague's wife and manipulate anyone who gets in his way, Bruce doesn't seem to have any boundaries.
With a detective inspector promotion in the offing, Bruce is tasked with leading a case involving the murder of a Japanese student in the capital. However, his extra-curricular activities begin to get in the way. Add to this is his attempts to be reconciled with his wife and daughter and this is no teddy bears' picnic.
It's worth starting with the obvious. Filth is explicit, OTT and, quite often, surreal. This isn't a film for the easily offended or the weak of heart. Much of what happens on screen is jaw-dropping in its absurdity. But all of it works a treat down to a bizarre cameo that's worth admission money on its own. Bruce is such a big character that everything he does is amplified. Dishevelled and constantly drunk, he's not the shy retiring type.

Colin Firth to play Paddington Bear, Hugh Bonneville will play Mr. Brown
MAIL ON LINE
By BAZ BAMIGBOYE
Colin Firth will play Paddington Bear in a movie from the man behind the Harry Potter films.
And Nicole Kidman has signed on to play the villain in the film.
Firth, who won an Oscar for The King’s Speech, will give voice to the bear from darkest Peru.
‘Paddington will be computer generated, and I will speak his lines with, I suspect, a slight Peruvian flavour,’ the actor told me.
‘Every other character in the film will be real, live, human beings,’ he said.
‘But the idea is that Paddington will have something of me in his DNA because I’m going to do some sessions wearing one of those helmets with cameras to capture my face muscles, and all that data will somehow be incorporated into Paddington.
Because Paddington is digitally created I’m spared having to over-indulge in marmalade sandwiches,’ Firth joked, referring to Paddington’s habit of keeping a stash of sarnies under his hat for emergencies.
The bear was created by Michael Bond and first appeared in the book A Bear Called Paddington in 1958.
He was sent to England by his Aunt Lucy, when she went to live in a home for retired bears in Lima, and was discovered by Mr Henry Brown and his wife Mary at Paddington Station. He was wearing a note round his neck stating: ‘Please look after this bear, thank you.’
Paddington was taken in by the Browns and their two children and lived in a Victorian semi at 32 Windsor Gardens off the Portobello Road.
Heyman confirmed to me that Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey’s Earl of Grantham, and Sally Hawkins, soon to be seen in Woody Allen’s superb movie Blue Jasmine, will play the Browns.
Julie Walters has been cast as Mrs Bird, their housekeeper, and Jim Broadbent may also take a role.

We won't be seeing James McAvoy on the big screen in 2012, but by this time next year, he'll have been the centerpiece of quite a few promising films. His slate includes: the thriller "Welcome To The Punch"; the duo of films "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His" and "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers" alongside Jessica Chastain; and Danny Boyle's art world tale "Trance." And if that's not enough, he'll be getting dirty with "Filth." And we now have our first peek at that movie.

'Anna Karenina' (2012) Movie Review BY: BRAD BREVET (ROPE OF SILICON)
I love Joe Wright's work. Outside of The Soloist he's delivered three amazing films in Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Hanna, but I'm sorry, Anna Karenina is an example of directorial masturbation at its most damaging. This film comes across as a self-indulgent "art" picture lacking heart, soul and any semblance of emotion. It, and it's characters, are empty vessels I'd prefer I never spend time with ever again.
Oh, there's Keira Knightley, looking radiant as she dresses in her evening's best. That's Jude Law and is his hair thinning on top? There's Aaron Johnson and boy does he look dapper, but what's with the mustache? And look, Matthew Macfadyen is cornering the market on becoming the next Jim Broadbent.
I should add a note right here, Macfadyen is one of Anna Karenina's only highlights and the Broadbent comparison is meant as a positive. Macfadyen is a joy to watch on the big screen just as much as is the star of Topsy-Turvy.
All our stars are dressed to the nines and the set decoration is lovely, but that's where we reach our first major roadblock, and where Wright appears to want us to focus most of our attention. You see, Anna Karenina was predominantly shot all in one location, the front of the house, upstairs, down and backstage of a dilapidated theatre. Backdrops will glide into the rafters, the stage lights will provide a luscious amber glow and doors will fall from the ceiling only to be opened seconds later. It's wonderfully unique, but it is also wasted, tedious and perplexing at the same time.

Hugh Grant as Killer Rapist in Cloud Atlas: Six Other Actor Transformations ArticleComments 0 By Nicholas Edmondson: Subscribe to Nicholas's RSS feed July 27, 2012 4:15 PM GMT (INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES)
Hugh Grant's fans would typically expect to see him sipping a cappuccino in a middle-class bistro as part of a gentle romantic comedy.
But the owner of England's most famous foppish fringe is sure to raise a few eyebrows with his performance in the adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas.
In the film, which takes in a number of interconnected stories from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future, Grant play several cameo roles, including that of a cannibal.
Grant had grown frustrated with his typecasting as the go-to British romantic comedy star following great success in Richard Curtis' Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Notting HIll.
He told Empire: "I do a lot of killing and raping. I wear an awful lot of prostheic makeup. You probably wouldn't know I was in the film. But it was a laugh. I slightly called my own bluff."

Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent: First Look: 22 Pictures from the Wachowskis' 'Cloud Atlas' BY: BRAD BREVET PUBLISHED: WEDNESDAY, JULY 25TH 2012 AT 7:17 PM (ROPE OF SILICON)
Based on the novel by David Mitchell, the film explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. The cast includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Ben Whishaw, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, James D'Arcy, Halle Berry and Keith David and the pic is set to hit theaters on October 26 following its Toronto premiere.
Today Warner Bros. has released 22 individual images from the film, giving you your first official look at the world we will be playing in and the number of eclectic and diverse images make me that much more excited to see it.
The pics feature a variety of cast members, some are obvious, some not so much. Many of the actors were asked to play multiple roles in the film such as Hugh Grant who says he has "six cameo parts in this strange, ambitious film" including a "cannibal, about 2000 years in the future". David Whishaw will play three different roles, saying he will play "Frobisher in the thirties; a female American in the seventies, in the Luisa Rey section; and a smallish role, where I'm basically an extra, in a modern-day nursing home, in the Timothy Cavendish section." Jim Sturgess will have six roles in the film, including that of Adam Ewing, a character whose part in the story bookends the novel from which it's based.

THE BRIT LIST: TOP TEN BRITISH CHARACTER ACTORS IN MOVIES TODAY By Leah Rozen | Posted on Friday, July 20th, 2012 (BBC AMERICA)
It’s well known among actors that while leading roles may afford the most screen time and biggest pay checks, supporting roles offer the greater acting challenges and often juiciest lines and scenes.
As Britain’s Eddie Marsan, one of the most talented character actors working today, once said, “I have friends who are leading men, and they’re only ever allowed to play leading men of a certain type. But as a character actor, there’s a wider variety of projects available.”
While a few lucky character actors eventually become leading men – think Bob Hoskins, Alan Rickman, Rhys Ifans and Bill Nighy – most, thanks to physiognomy, build or age, are left to shine in secondary roles.
British thespians have always excelled as character actors. Back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Donald Crisp, C. Aubrey Smith, Roland Young and plenty more regularly brightened studio releases.
The tradition continues today. Just run through the cast list for any of the eight Harry Potter films and you’ll find a veritable Who’s Who of British talent trotted out as characters who either instruct Harry and his adolescent pals or threaten them.
In salute of these supporting stalwarts, here’s a list (in alphabetical order) of the ten busiest British male character actors working in movies today:

After winning the attention of American audiences playing maid Anna Bates in Downton Abbey, Joanne Froggatt is planning to make her mark on Hollywood too.
“I’m heading to Los Angeles in a couple of months,” the 31 year-old actress, pictured, tells me. “I just filmed Filth with James McAvoy and Jim Broadbent so I’d love to do more films as that was such fun. It’s great as because of Downton Abbey people there know who I am more than they would otherwise.”

Ciaran Hinds On For New Suspense thriller He's joining Eric Bana & Rebecca Hall 12 April 2012 | Written by James White | Source: Focus Features (EMPIRE)
Back in February, the first word broke about Boy A director John Crowley’s new, untitled suspense thriller, when it snagged the services of Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall in the lead roles. It still doesn’t have a final name, but the movie does at least now boast a supporting cast, with Ciaran Hinds, Riz Ahmed, Kenneth Cranham, Jim Broadbent, Anne-Marie Duff and Julia Stiles all on board.
The script is by Eastern Promises writer Steve Knight (which gives us high hopes for its quality), and the plot finds Hall and Bana as legal eagles who also happen to be former lovers. They’ve largely steered clear of each other, but when they're paired as part of the defence team on a high-profile terrorism case, loyalties are tested and nerves are set on edge as their lives are put at risk. We’re going to guess that barrister's wigs are disturbed, but that’s entirely speculation at this point.

Filth is the latest novel of Irvine Welsh to be adapted for the big screen and with see the actor take on the role of a drug addicted policeman.
And while it may be a very dark role for McAvoy he admits that he has had a great time working on the movie, which is directed by Jon S. Baird. Speaking to The Press Association the actor said: "It's dark as all hell and funny as all hell and fingers crossed it should be good.

James McAvoy: Filth Shoot Begins (Female First)
23 January 2012
Steel Mill Pictures and Logie Pictures are delighted to announce principal photography on feature film Filth, written and directed by Jon S. Baird.
Shooting in Scotland, primarily Glasgow, as well as on location in Sweden, Belgium and Hamburg. Filth is based on the best-selling novel by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting).
The movie brings together a high quality cast as James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent and Eddie Marsan are all set to star.
Scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal.
As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control.
His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity. The question is: can he keep his grip on reality long enough to disentangle himself from the filth?
Writer/Director Jon S. Baird commented, "Filth is filled with irreverent comedy and some extremely surreal moments, but ends with a sharp twist of poignancy.
The character of Bruce Robertson has to show such a wide range that it could only take an actor as talented as James McAvoy to pull it off with the necessary charm and humanity."
