Benedict Cumberbatch Eyed To Replace Tom Hardy In 'Everest,' James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston & More In Mix To Co-Star

Two filmmakers are currently trying to get to the top of an "Everest" film first: Doug Liman and Baltasar Kormakur. But the question is which one will get there first as one has lost a lead, and the other some financing. So let's start the Liman flick, which had been slated to star Tom Hardy.

Well, according to Deadline, with a March 2014 start date eyed, scheduling didn't work out and now the hunt for a new leading man is on. Benedict Cumberbatch is apparently in the mix to take over Hardy's role as George Mallory, with Joel Kinnaman, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens, Matthew Goode and Jim Sturgess being tossed around to play George Finch, in the adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's "Paths Of Glory" that will tell the true tale of the first man to climb Mount Everest.



But it seems like a wishlist right now, rather than anything concrete. Why? For the simple reason that (as our readers pointed out) projects like "Batman Vs. Superman," "Crimson Peak" and "Frankenstein" are keeping a few of the names off of that list already. But it seems we might find out soon with Sony gunning to beat Universal and Working Title with their movie.

Brendan Gleeson and David Thewlis have been cast in Eliza Graves.

They will join Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Sir Ben Kingsley in the Brad Anderson-directed horror, reports Deadline.

The film will be loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

It will center around Sturgess as a Harvard Medical School graduate who begins a new job at a mental asylum.

He slowly begins to realize that the inmates have taken control of the institution.

The cast includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Ben Whishaw, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, James D'Arcy, Halle Berry and Keith David and the pic is set to hit theaters on October 26 following its Toronto premiere.

Today Warner Bros. has released 22 individual images from the film, giving you your first official look at the world we will be playing in and the number of eclectic and diverse images make me that much more excited to see it.

The pics feature a variety of cast members, some are obvious, some not so much. Many of the actors were asked to play multiple roles in the film such as Hugh Grant who says he has "six cameo parts in this strange, ambitious film" including a "cannibal, about 2000 years in the future". David Whishaw will play three different roles, saying he will play "Frobisher in the thirties; a female American in the seventies, in the Luisa Rey section; and a smallish role, where I'm basically an extra, in a modern-day nursing home, in the Timothy Cavendish section." Jim Sturgess will have six roles in the film, including that of Adam Ewing, a character whose part in the story bookends the novel from which it's based.

It's kind of hard to get any specific details about the upcoming adaptation of Cloud Atlas-- and even if you got them, it'd be hard to know what to make of them. David Mitchell's famously sprawling, genre-bending novel has been adapted by the trio of the Wachowski siblings Lana and Andy and Tom Tykwer, along with an all-star cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess and Hugh Grant. Each of the actors will play at least six different parts in the inter-weaving narratives, which range from the adventures of an American intellectual traveling in the South Pacific in the 19th century to a futuristic society in Hawaii, where the last remaining humans live like early natives after the rest of humanity self-destructs.

Hugh Grant Joining the Impressive Cast of Wachowskis' 'Cloud Atlas'

With a cast that already includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Keith David, David Gyas and Susan Sarandon, you'd think that the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer would be done rounding up talent for their adaptation of Cloud Atlas. However, Screen Daily has word that Hugh Grant is now signing on to join the big screen version of David Mitchell's complex novel of the same name. The project is certainly much more promising than his last big screen endeavor, the painfully generic romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans?
Likely Grant will be taking on multiple roles like the rest of the cast as the story follows six plot threads across time—a 19th century notary on a Pacific expedition, a bisexual musician in the 1930s, a female journalist in a thriller in 1970s California, an aging publisher in London in the present, a clone in a futuristic dystopia, and a Pacific survivor in a post-apocalyptic world. What makes this even crazier is all these worlds fold in on themselves. Grant is certainly a welcome addition to this already impressive cast, and I just can't wait to see what the Wachowskis and Tykwer doing with such complex source material.

JIM STURGESS - ANNE HATHAWAY 'ONE DAY'

Jim Sturgess thinks spending time away from his girlfriend makes their relationship stronger.
The actor plays Dexter in the movie adaptation of book One Day, with Anne Hathaway taking the part of his love interest Emma. The two get to know each other at university and the story follows them over the next 20 years.
It’s got Jim thinking about love and what it takes to make a relationship work. He’s been with musician Mickey O’Brien for seven years and their jobs mean they frequently spend long periods apart.
“It works in your favour a bit because you really miss that person, and you’re reconnecting when you’re together,” he said. “You cherish the times that you’re with each other.”
The pair work hard to fit into each other’s schedules. Mickey plays keyboard for La Roux, but whenever she has time off she’s more than happy to go to film sets to be with her beau.
“When she’s on tour, she might do two weeks solid then three weeks off, so she’ll come and find me wherever I am, or if I’m not making a film and she’s on tour, I can go and live out my rock ‘n’ roll dream,” he laughed.

The British actor fell in love with the American city when he made 2007 film 'Across the Universe' there, and would one day love to own a property in the US.
He said: "I spend a lot of time in Los Angeles and New York, so I consider those places home in a weird way. I love New York, I fell in love when I filmed 'Across the Universe'. I couldn't go home after we finished. I loved it so much that I stayed on for another year.

If I had enough money, I'd love to get a place in America.

Despite his love of America, Jim still spends most of his time in London, and doesn't ever see himself permanently giving up the British capital.
He added: "I've got good friends in all three cities, but I always come back to London, because that's where my family and friends are, and I have a place."
Jim - who stars alongside Anne Hathaway in 'One Day' - also said he enjoyed making part of the film in France, as it was like being on holiday.
He explained to Britain's OK! magazine: "We went to a place in Northern France and it felt like we were just on holiday - it didn't feel like work at all. We had such a nice time."

A few stories and rumors from the casting world always slip through our net. So we figured come the end of the week we start bringing you a little catch up of any of the news flying around the web we may have missed. In our first catch up we have some news and rumors involving British actors Colin Firth, Jim Sturgess, Christian Bale and Ben Whishaw, plus details of British director Paul Greengrass’ latest project.
It’s just a rumor, but an exciting one! Apparently Colin Firth has expressed a desire to star opposite (the already cast) Carey Mulligan in the upcoming adaptation of My Fair Lady. John Madden (Shakespeare In Love) will direct and Emma Thompson has written the remake of the 1964 musical.
If the rumor mill is correct then Firth will play Henry Higgins in a role made famous by Rex Harrison.
Christian Bale is currently busy filming the next Batman movie but already looks set to be ready to put pen to paper on a couple of new contracts.
If the rumors are true he will be starring in the Spike Lee directed remake of the Asian cult classic, Oldboy and the Clint Eastwood directed remake of A Star is Born alongside Beyonce.
Jim Sturgess is currently in theaters in One Day and last week he signed up for his next project. He will begin filming within the next couple of weeks on the Wachowski brothers’ new movie, Cloud Atlas.
Sturgess completes the all-star line up of Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent in this ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel that follows six separate characters through multiple time frames.
Currently wowing audiences on BBC America in The Hour, rumor has it that Ben Whishaw may have already landed a role in the untitled Bond 23 directed by Sam Mendes. If true it won’t be the first time he has starred with Daniel Craig having already appeared alongside the latest Bond in Layer Cake.
The next 007 movie is set for release in November 2012 and Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes are also being considered for two unnamed leads.
Finally British director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) has signed up for his next project. This story is hopefully true as it was announced by the author of the book the film is to be based on!
According to author Robert Harris, Greengrass is attached to direct an adaptation of his forthcoming book, The Fear Index, a thriller about an impending meltdown in the financial markets.
