Luke Evans: Luke’s train job (THE SUN)
HEART-THROB Luke Evans is to play the man who masterminded the Great Train Robbery in a new TV drama.
Luke, 33, best known for playing Aramis in the Three Musketeers movie, told TV Biz he will play the lead role of Bruce Reynolds in the two-part drama.
Bruce hatched the plan for the 1963 mail train heist, at the time Britain’s biggest ever robbery, with a haul worth £41million in today’s money.
Luke said: “I am really looking forward to the role – it is a bit against type for me maybe but he was quite a character.
“I think the drama will really show what happened. It concentrates on the robbery from both sides and you get an excellent idea of what happened. I think it will make great TV.”

The Aberbargoed actor, currently filming The Hobbit in New Zealand, took to Twitter to reveal that, as the Roast had already reported, he has indeed been picked for the role.
He will play the baddie in the sixth instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise, opposite returning members Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Dwayne Johnson.
He said: “I’m stoked and ready for some s*** hot action!”

Raven star Luke Evans says rise to fame is like 'winning the lottery' By Robin Turner, Wales Online May 18 2012
The former Bedwellty Comprehensive School pupil, who grew up in Aberbargoed in the Rhymney Valley, admitted his friends from home are still “in shock” about his string of top roles.
The 33-year-old was speaking in the Philippines where he is promoting his latest film The Raven, a stylish, gothic thriller centred on the life of US horror writer Edgar Allan Poe.
The 33-year-old actor has become a familiar face on the big screen in films including The Three Musketeers, Immortals, Clash of the Titans and Tamara Drewe.
And he is due to star in the forthcoming two-part fantasy film and prequel to Lord of The Rings The Hobbit as Bard the Bowman.
The Welshman has also followed in the footsteps of fashion icons George Clooney, David Beckham and Bruce Willis by signing up as ambassador for Italian lifestyle brand Police, fronting all campaigns for the brand, including watches and jewellery, throughout 2012.
Asked about his success, Evans said: “It was never really part of my plan to be in films, it was really sort of a dream.
“When it happened and the ball dropped and started rolling very fast, it took a few jobs before I took a breather and sort of put everything into perspective.
“It has been an incredible last few years of my life.
“My friends back at home are still in shock as to where I am and what I’m doing and that it actually is happening to me and not somebody else.

Total Film recently caught up with Luke Evans to chat about The Raven, and talk swiftly turned to The Hobbit.
Evans is possibly best known in these parts for roles in Tamara Drewe, Immortals and The Three Musketeers, but he’s about to go stellar with The Lord Of The Rings’ prequels and Fast And Furious 6.

Do you know the name Luke Evans? Maybe not, but if you've seen 'Clash of the TItans,' 'Robin Hood' or any good West End theater in the last several years you may have laid your lovely eyes on his handsome face. Either way, we don't want you to feel like you're missing out on knowing who the next big star is, so we've interviewed him for you. (And when we say "next big star," we mean it. He's starring opposite Jessica Biel as Vivaldi in the biopic on Vivaldi's life, called 'Vivaldi.' He's also starring in 'Immortals' as Zeus opposite Kellan Lutz's Poseidon and Freida Pinto's Phaedra, and as one of the Musketeers 'Three Musketeers.') You don't have to wait for those huge blockbusters to come out to see him though. Currently you can see Luke in 'Tamara Drewe' and see what all the fuss is about.
Oh and make sure you imagine his answers in a charming British accent...
Hey Luke, how are ya?
I’m good, how are you?
Good! Where are you right now?
We’re in the Four Seasons hotel in Los Angeles and it’s absolutely boiling outside and we’re stuck inside. I don’t much like being inside when it’s sunny outside.
So, I want us to get to know you, and I don’t want to give away a lot about the movie, so I’m going to ask you personal questions that actually do relate to the movie, but the readers won’t know exactly how until they go see it. Okay?
Yup!
Okay, here we go then! First question, do you have any personal experience with cows?
Oh, no, no I don’t. We used to go to cattle markets when I was a little kid, with my mum and dad. We used to go to local towns and markets and we used to go to a cattle market and that’s my only experience with the big bovines.
How do you feel about being called a 'sex object'?
Oh, I don’t know anything about being a sex object. I can’t have an opinion on that. Whatever happens, if somebody calls me that I shall take it as a compliment, I think it’s absolutely hilarious. If my mum were here she’d laugh her head off.
Ever been in a fist fight?
With Dominic? (Ed. note - Dominic Cooper, his 'Tamara Drewe' co-star, who I also interviewed, coming soon!) Oh, no I haven’t actually. No, I’ve never been. I come from a family who are pacifists, they’d walk away from a fight and so I think that’s a good quality. Yeah, I’m not a fighter. I mean I’d stand up for myself if I had to but most of the time you can calm a situation down before it gets to that point.
What sort of teenager were you?
I was quite rebellious. I was very rebellious. I used to take days off of school and bunk off school all the time. I used to write my own sick notes, used to write my own absent notes, oh god I was a nightmare, nightmare!
Who or what were you obsessed with as a teenager?
I remember I had my first CD player, and my mum and dad bought me my first CD and it was like a compilation CD and it had all of the people from the eighties, all the British people like Haywoode, Rick Astley, Belinda Carlisle, Kylie (Minogue) and Jason (Donovan) and Sybil and all of those Stock Aitken Waterman (music producers) kids that all created all of these singers. But I didn’t really have an idol or anything. Being an only child I never really had an idol, I was always just sort of happy totting along on my own. I was quite a cheerful little kid.
When you’re an only child you also don’t really have older siblings influencing you to think people are cool.
Yeah, exactly! And I never had that. I remember my best friend’s older sister was obsessed with Michael Jackson and it made him obsessed with Michael Jackson. And yeah, the older siblings often dictate who you end up being fascinated with. And then I remember another friend, a girlfriend of mine she was obsessed with Kurt Cobain. And I remember she used to dress in black and I never understood it because my dad listens to The Drifters and all the old stuff, so I have much more knowledge of the older stuff than I do the more modern music of my childhood.
What sort of domestic and outdoorsy skills do you have?
Oh, I have loads. I’m very, very good at manual stuff. I repair plenty. It’s funny because my dad is a bricklayer and my mum’s a gardener and so we’re quite manual people. And so I guess I’ve gained that quality. I don’t usually have to ask anyone for help with any manual things, I can usually pick it up even if I don’t know how to do it, I usually work it out myself, I’ve been very lucky with that.
Have you ever killed an animal for food?
No, I’ve never had to kill an animal for food, apart from choosing a lobster out of a restaurant tank. Even then, I didn’t have to kill it. Somebody else did. Um, and I’d never plucked a goose either. I actually went on YouTube and found somebody plucking a goose, “How to pluck a goose” on Youtube. And the night before I shot the scene where I pluck the goose and found copious clips of people plucking geese. (Ed. note: we found the videos he probably watched, but we shall spare you the linkage!)
Have you ever spied on anybody?
Have I ever spied on anybody? Ummmm, I don’t think I have, no. I guess while eavesdropping I kind of have. But that’s impossible because I’ve got a Welsh mother and that’s what we do. We like to gossip and eavesdrop, so I guess I’ve picked that up. (Laughs) I am quite nosy, but no, I’ve never spied on anyone.
Have you ever done anything grand for anyone like re-do their entire house?
I bought my mum and dad their house and I bought them their neighbor’s house. They had horrible neighbors. And so when their neighbors…well, oh my god they were horrible, yeah, they were horrible neighbors, basically. So when they put their house up for sale I bought it and now they have lovely neighbors because they’re in charge of who is in there. So, that’s the grandest thing I ever did.
That’s so nice!!! K, so, this question is totally unrelated to the film, but I saw that you have a lot of musical theater experience in London’s West End (the equivalent of Broadway in London), I have to ask…would you ever consider being on 'Glee' like other musical theater stars such as Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Cheyenne Jackson?
Um, yeah, I guess I would. It’s quite funny. I’ve seen a few episodes. It’s not really my cup of tea, but I know everyone is obsessed with it. I’m often the anti to everything that’s popular. It’s not that I don’t like it. If they offered me a guest part in it, absolutely, why not? It’d be fun.
Are you the type of person who, if everyone is bananas about a movie or book or something, your reaction is to not want to have anything to do with it?
I often am the devil’s advocate in those situations. I remember when 'Harry Potter' first came out and 'Lord of the Rings' I didn’t see it until it came onto DVD, and everybody went to see it and I didn’t. I didn’t feel the compulsion to go and see what everybody else was seeing. It’s funny, I’m a huge fan of 'Lord of the Rings,' I’ve watched it copious amounts since. But, yeah, I guess I am one of those people, a salmon that swims downstream when all the rest are swimming up.
I don’t know where you’ll be, but are you going to dress up for Halloween?
This is a very American thing dressing up. In th UK, we don’t really do all that, the kids do it, but adults don’t do it. I know it’s a huge event here, isn’t it, all over America. I think it’s brilliant and I wish we did do it, and I wish I had a costume to wear. What day is Halloween?
October 31st.
October 31st I shall be back in Bavaria shooting 'The Three Musketeers,' so I will be in costume actually, I’ll be in a Musketeer costume!

My dear people, our poll for THE BEST WELSH STAR is over, and thanks to his devoted fans Luke Evans won the title with stunning 27% votes, leaving Catherine Zeta Jones (19%), Anthony Hopkins (19%) and Christian Bale (19%) behind him.
Coming from Wales, super dashing, ultra charismatic and mega talented LUKE EVANS has been getting really tasty roles in big epics and huge blockbusters. For obvious reasons, directors love to give him Godly roles so you've seen him as Apollo in CLASH OF THE TITANS and this December you will see him as the King of all Gods, Zeus in this year's most awaited epic IMMORTALS. Currently you can also watch him in your cinemas as Aramis in THE THREE MUSKETEERS, a dynamic and magnetic classic role to which Luke gave a bit of his own spice, and his biggest future role is the role of the brave archer Bard, the leader of Men in Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT saga. His role is being compared to the one Viggo Mortensen had as Aragorn in LORD OF THE RINGS, so I guess we can expect this one to be Luke's big jump into Hollywood's A-league too. In 2012 he will also appear beside John
Cusack in THE RAVEN, the period film on Edgar Allan Poe shot in Serbia last winter and you could see in the trailer released last week, that Luke absolutely shines in the role of the 19th century Baltimore detective.
As someone said in the comments here recently about Luke - he has an ability to get into the characters he plays in a very profound way (kinda like Meryl Streep), but to, at the same time, retain his magnetic charisma which just radiates off the screen even when he is playing supporting roles (kinda like Cate Blanchett and Jude Law). His charisma and the powerful ability to depict emotions through his facial expressions, no matter whether those are dramatic or comedic emotions, is what made HOLLYWOOD SPY turn his attention onto Luke while watching his role in wonderfully charming TAMARA DREW movie last year (it is being released in USA this month).
It is interesting that this magnificent Welshman also has a velvety, stunning and amazingly captivating voice, which you can hear over at YouTube in some of the videos of his theater plays. Check out his duet with one of my favourite singers Siobhan Donaghy in mesmerizing WITHOUT YOU song, or the mindblowing ONE SONG GLORY just from Luke.

Why is everyone falling over themselves to cast him? He’s rugged, manly and sensitive, a fearsome combination. Frears was tearing his hair out as he sought a D. H. Lawrence man-of-the-earth type as Drewe’s country neighbor and childhood crush. “We couldn’t cast the part,” said Frears over lunch at the Carlton Beach. “He came in the room and it was what we were looking for. A hunk like you used to see in westerns, like Gordon McRae.” Why are such men in short supply? “Feminism,” joked Frears. “There aren’t many men like that.”
I’m not sure if Evans will ever be as gifted an actor as fellow Welshmen Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen, but it’s something to aspire to. At Cannes, I was not the only woman taken by his charms. Check the video below.

How Luke Evans swapped Welsh valleys for Hollywood Hills

The opening shot of Tamara Drewe, the forthcoming big screen adaptation of Posy Simmonds' graphic novel, is very pretty. In the background, the rolling Devon countryside; in the foreground, the rippling Luke Evans, shirtless and leaning on a shovel as he builds a hazel fence. It is a timeless sight, invoking the spirit of Thomas Hardy – Tamara Drewe is loosely modelled on Far From the Madding Crowd – and Luke Evans is perfect as Andy Cobb, the strong, silent, brooding rural type. Think Sean Bean in Lady Chatterley, or Alan Bates as Gabriel Oak: top farmer totty. He shares an on-screen kiss with Gemma Arterton and brings Posy Simmonds' illustration vividly to life. 'As soon as I saw him, I knew we had our chap,' the film's director Stephen Frears told me. 'He's so clearly a solid, decent, strong person and there aren't so many who can convey those qualities these days.'
When we meet for lunch near his Shoreditch flat, Evans has a strong handshake, searching, luminous eyes, and a wonderful Welsh voice, as sprung and resonant as Richard Burton's. He orders a Diet Coke and grilled fish, as part of his healthy routine – although Gwyneth Paltrow told him off for drinking Diet Coke when he sat next to her at a Louis Vuitton party. 'She said: "No honey, it should be water all the way,"' he recounts with a twinkle. Evans looks every inch the film star in the making – apart from a distressingly weedy goatee. But even this is part of the package. 'Luke is growing his facial hair for his next film, The Three Musketeers,' his publicist emailed me from Los Angeles the night before our photoshoot, adding sternly 'and he isn't allowed to cut it'. Luke is playing Aramis alongside Matthew Macfadyen as Athos, and the day after our interview he was due to fly to Germany for swordplay, ropework and doublet-and-hose action. 'Wearing a doublet will be like wearing a duvet, after all the armour I've had to carry lately.'
His last role was a breastplate-baring Zeus in Immortals, a big studio epic also starring John Hurt, Freida Pinto and Mickey Rourke. If it makes Evans a star when it comes out next year, it won't have happened easily. The film's premise is that each of its gods are permanently at the peak of their physical prime, so Luke was sent to Montreal for seven weeks of dedicated physical training.
'I literally felt like a zoo animal. Sleeping time, feeding time, training time. I had two trainers, one for Tabata, which is a cardiovascular system that keeps your heart-rate up and burns calories, and one for weights. I'd wake up, eat, train, have a shake, train, eat, sleep, train, have a shake, train and go home to bed. I worked very hard and I loved it. It changed everything. I'm two stone lighter now and have taken two inches off my waist. I always wanted to get into proper shape. Attaining it is the hard thing, maintaining it seems to be OK, because I know so much more about what to eat and drink.'
His cocktail of choice is vodka, lime and soda, which the Tamara Drewe producer (and mother of Lily Allen) Alison Owen overheard him ordering. 'She told me it was known as a "Skinny Bitch",' he laughs. 'I haven't had a kebab for a year and half now,' he adds with a touch of sadness. 'That's what I miss… You can take the boy out of the valleys, but you can't take the valleys out of the boy.'
He grew up in the small village of Aberbargoed, the only child of a builder and a housewife. They were a young couple – 19 and 23 when he was born – and both are devout Jehovah's Witnesses. 'That's what I did for the first 16 years of my life.' Spread the Word, door to door? 'That's it.' What impact did that have on him as a child? 'You're knocking on people's doors every week, in other villages down the valley, so you do develop a sense of confidence, to deal with the knock-backs and with people not wanting to speak to you.' It was a happy home – 'they're people with good morals and standards. No swearwords were allowed at home at all, ever,' – and Luke only gradually moved away from the faith as a teenager, leaving behind Creationism and the total ban on swearing. By 16 he had his own ideas. 'I wanted to live my life. I didn't want to upset anybody but I had a clear vision of how I wanted to live and it had nothing to do with religion.'
He still speaks to his parents every day. 'I'm very close to them, it's the way I've always been, ever since I left home. You've got a lot on your shoulders being an only child. You've got to make them proud.' He can't wait for his grandfather, 'a strong man with white mutton-chop whiskers and an amazing allotment', to see him playing a son of the soil in Tamara Drewe. But his parents have never attended his premieres. 'No, I don't think they ever will. Too glitzy.'
School, Bedwellty Comprehensive, was more difficult. 'I was bullied at school, I was very unhappy. Being a Jehovah's Witness, being an only child… in a small village you only have to be a little bit different and you're vilified.' The bullying wasn't physical, he says, just a continual alienation from his peers. On his first day out of school aged 16, he went to River Island and got a job shelving shoes. He saved £15 per week for acting and singing lessons, and a year later, won a scholarship to the London Studio Centre, a college specialising in musical theatre. 'Oh, it was wonderful being able to sing and act every day. I'd always thought it would just be a creative vent and I never thought I could do it for a living. So the way things are now is just amazing.'
After three years' training he won roles in musicals La Cava, Avenue Q, Miss Saigon and Rent. He created the leading role in Boy George's Taboo, and for a while he was close to Boy George. 'We kept in touch until he moved to New York. He's a very talented man and I have the utmost respect for his talent, but I think he's very detached from what we would think of as a normal life. I invited him to the first night of Piaf at the Donmar, but he didn't stay on to say hello afterwards and I haven't seen him since.' Piaf was the last musical Luke appeared in, as, after a stint on Crossroads, he gained a good film agent and his career took off.
'Now I'm 31 I feel really comfortable in my skin for the first time. I feel like a man. Everything seems to have come together. I look in the mirror and I don't mind what I see.' His brief appearance as Apollo in Clash of the Titans last year took him to the Golden Globes. 'It's a lot of fun being dressed by designers and surrounded by publicists. If the boys at school could see me now…' Working on Tamara Drewe the cast and crew had 'wonderful fun', as Stephen Frears attests. 'Luke even persuaded me to sing the 'Green Green Grass of Home' with him at karaoke one night, so he must have compelling powers.' Gemma Arterton's then boyfriend, now husband, Stefano Catelli visited the set. 'They are a lovely couple to be around: two people who love each other and just have that energy. He's in fashion, a very snazzy dresser. And she's a diamond. She'll be a friend for life. Their wedding was in a castle in Andalucia, but I was beefing it up in Montreal. I regret not being there but being an actress she understands. You can't say "no" when a huge engine of machinery and people are waiting for you. I've sacrificed an awful lot, in terms of friends and family, but it's worth it.'
Luke lives alone in Shoreditch with his beloved tropical fish. 'They're very hard to keep and temperamental but they've stopped dying on me.' He has a temperature-controlled tank of brightly coloured friends. 'There's Discus fish and a Keyhole Cichlid, which has a keyhole shape on the back of its body. The Discus are big and round and flat so when they face you they're huge and when they turn sideways they're very thin. They're incredible ultra-violet colours and they have real personalities. You can hand-feed them and when you come in the room they'll come to the glass and follow you round. I love to sit down on a beanbag at the end of the day and watch my fish. It's therapeutic, isn't it? They're alive and I'm keeping them alive. I like the responsibility.'
The only catch is the time he spends in LA. 'If I ever move there I won't be able to transport them. I could give them a map and put them in at Dover…' And with a bear hug and a kiss, he's off to find a more direct route to Hollywood for himself.
