Ralph Fiennes returns to 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' just in time for awards season

Eight months after it hit theaters, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is back in business, and here's hoping Hollywood is paying attention.

Ralph Fiennes joined co-stars Tony Revolori and Jeff Goldblum for a final SAG nominating committee Q&A Monday night in Los Angeles that this pundit was lucky enough to moderate. Most in the packed theater had already seen "Budapest" but wanted a chance to hear the film's stars discuss their journey into Wes Anderson's latest creation in person.

Fiennes, who plays the indomitable M. Gustav, discussed how little he cared to look at Anderson's detailed animatic of the picture and how a friend of the director's gave him slight inspiration for the role (will the real M. Gustav please stand up?). Revolori, who plays Zero the faithful Lobby Boy, recalled how nervous he was meeting Fiennes for the first time during a fitting and how the Oscar nominee reassured him with a hug. And Goldblum, who plays the unfortunate lawyer Kovacs, could not stop praising Anderson's vision and the "humanity" he brought to such a precise creative endeavor. We also learned that Fiennes tried to convince Anderson to pick a few current colognes as the infamous L'Air de Panache, but the Francophile would have none of it (what it really smells like is still a mystery). Fiennes also revealed Mendel's pastry concoctions were actually too sweet for him to eat and the audience was somewhat shocked to discover that Revolori is severely allergic to chocolate and never took a bite of any of the film's numerous deserts.

Q&As live and die on the talent and this trio made sure the audience realized just how specific their performances were (i.e., it wasn't Anderson dictating), while still providing some wonderfully entertaining anecdotes. They also heaped praise on their co-stars, who helped fill out one of the most memorable acting ensembles in recent memory with Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Edward Norton, Tom Wilkinson and F. Murray Abraham earning individual praise. It was a fun and fast conversation with a lot of love from the SAG members on hand.

The quick trip to Los Angeles for Fiennes featured a whirlwind of "Budapest" awards-themed photo shoots and interviews (look for a special one-on-one with Christoph Waltz soon), an hour-long career retrospective for BAFTA members and a solo American Cinematheque Q&A hosted at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. The legendary actor may have an outside shot at earning a Best Actor nomination (he's in good company this year if he doesn't), but he is still keeping the doors open for "Budapest's" awards prospects overall. Will it be enough? Let's review, shall we?

At this date, the film is still one of the best reviewed films of the year with an 88 on Metacritic (for comparison: "Boyhood" has a rare 100, "Birdman" an 89 and "Foxcatcher" currently has an 87), as well as a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes (for comparison: "Boyhood" has 99%, "Whiplash" is at 97%, "Birdman" is at 94%, and "Nightcrawler" is at 94%). The film is also, considering its audience, a global smash, earning almost $60 million domestic and $172.2 million globally. Those are career-best numbers for Anderson and you can debate whether or not it's his best reviewed film to date (it might be splitting hairs at this point). Needless to say, "Budapest" is a huge success that is trying to break the recent Oscar curse that finds the Academy ignoring early releases in the qualifying calendar.

In theory, with so many potential contenders falling by the wayside (and you know who you are), "Budapest's" slot should already be solidified. That being said, benchmarks like a SAG ensemble nomination, a Golden Globes nomination for Best Comedy or Musical (a given), landing on AFI's top 10 list, earning a spot in the National Board of Review's top 10 and, most importantly, a slew of top 10 critics list mentions are key. Searchlight will campaign "Budapest" as best they can, but they also need the awards media to stop somehow pretending it's not in the game because it came out before Cannes (Sundance titles seem to get a pass because they are usually released in June).

Tilda Swinton has become the latest celebrity to experience Tom Hiddleston’s knack for uncanny impressions.

Tilda stars in Jim Jarmusch-directed vampire flick Only Lovers Left Alive with Hiddleston, and revealed that her co-star spent a lot of their time together dazzling her with impressions.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: ‘We just sort of chewed it and had a great time. We were nocturnal quite a lot, and we played all sorts of silly stuff. He does quite a lot of impressions pretty constantly.’

While admitting she hadn’t heard Tom do an impersonation of her she added that ‘I have seen his Jim Jarmusch and its very good!’

Hiddleston has been getting Hiddlestoners hot under the collar with his scarily accurate mimicry, but which impression is the best? Here’s our (not definitive) ranking.

5) Chris Evans

Captain America Chris Evans has starred with Hiddleston in Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Thor: The Dark World (albeit briefly), and the pair have done quite a few press rounds, so its unsurprising that Tom has got Evans’ mannerisms on point.

Verdict: While cute, it’s not one of Tom’s better ones though, and nothing beats Evans’ actual speaking voice. Nothing.

4) Samuel L Jackson

It’s a big risk taking on someone as legendary as Samuel L Jackson, but not only does Tom have a go, he puts a Jackson spin on his much-loved Marvel villain Loki.

Verdict: The ‘I am burdened with glorious mother*****g purpose’ line is gold, but you can’t take on Samuel L Jackson and win.

Tom Hiddleston playing a vampire? It’s as if the ‘Only Lovers Left Alive‘ trailer knows the ‘Thor‘ foe’s fan base all too well. Loki Hiddleston stars as a rock star/vampire/goth type whose wife Tilda Swinton lives across the ocean, though the two reunite for some blood popsicles.

The ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ trailer plays moody, which is not surprising as it was directed by Jim Jarmusch. Here he’s credited as the director of ‘Dead Man’ and ‘Ghost Dog,’ but he’s best known as one of the greatest and most important independent filmmakers of all time. Here he may have sunk his teeth into his most commercial project yet (just because of the stars of the movie), though the film is definitely a Jarmusch film through and through.

Tom Hiddleston: Only Lovers Left Alive Makes Vampires Cool Again

There is a simple way to prepare oneself for Only Lovers Left Alive — just imagine a Jim Jarmusch movie about vampires starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston. Because that's exactly what it is: 123 minutes of spinning, languid shots and the titular cool perfected by Jarmusch. All his trademarks are there, from the dark sunglasses to the homage to rock-and-roll to that incredible outsider perspective. However, the outsiders this time, are immortal. In fact, if one is familiar with the director's oeuvre, this film is a delight to relish in — if, of course, you're into darkness.

Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play the lovers, who are aptly named Adam and Eve. They are exact opposites, even in their choice of hometowns — Adam favors burned-down Detroit and its musical underpinnings while Eve likes the exotic privacy found in Tangier). Together, they comprise some sort of pale, vampiric yin and yang, both yearning for each other from afar but keenly aware of their differences. The story would not work if we didn't believe in their enduring long-distance love, but the moment that Eve and Adam connect, we see the joy they find in one another, the type of love that only becomes richer as the centuries fall away.

The film starts with a romantically depressed Adam, verging on a pathos reminiscent of Dark Shadows' Barnabas Collins. He lays about, collecting and fetishizing old instruments (supplied by an eager and naive Anton Yelchin), writing music, anonymously releasing it, and then scorning the attention it receives. When a far more content Eve — with her hair tied back and her iPhone in hand — senses this, she jumps a plane and heads for his needy arms.

Hiddleston is a fine, dedicated actor who plays Adam with a wry weariness that makes his sad-sack nature likable. Yet, there is a problem with any sort of film involving Swinton: The eye drinks her in. And, such is the case with Only Lovers. Whenever she is onscreen, she commands all attention, channeling her wide-eyed otherworldliness to convince us she is centuries-old. Unlike her man, she revels in her existence, having conversations with, yes, mushrooms and continuing her life- (or death-) long friendship with John Hurt's Marlowe, who apparently was the real genius behind Shakespeare. Where Adam languishes and sulks, Eve poses, draping her legs over things, tying her stringy and ethereal hair up, lithe and light next to her beloved.

On-screen lovers Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston strip down for a steamy embrace in a newly-released trailer for their upcoming film Only Lovers Left Alive.

The statuesque 52-year-old actress shows off her incredible physique in the scene, as she lays next to her buff younger beau in a moment of pure postcoital bliss.

The two-minute teaser, which is subtitled, depicts Tom as suicidal recluse Adam, a vampire who has lived many lives and now resides in the dilapidated landscape of Detroit, where he exists as an underground musician.

The movie was nominated for a Palme d'Or when it premiered earlier this year at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

It is yet to get a confirmed US release date.

A series of provocative new photos from the highly anticipated vampire-themed film ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE has emerged, showcasing uber popular stage and screen star Tom Hiddleston in a particularly moody and gothic milieu.

 Hiddleston stars alongside noted Academy Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton in the Jim Jarmusch-helmed film, which has recently been screened at a number of film festivals - including the Toronto International Film Festival this month - prior to its planned nationwide debut later this year. Benedict Cumberbatch named Britannia Awards' British Artist of the Year

The 2013 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards are giving Benedict Cumberbatch a very special honor. This year, he's going to be named the British Artist of the Year at the annual awards ceremony.

Cumberbatch will be joining some prestigious company. Other recipients of the award include Kate Winslet, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Sheen and Tilda Swinton. The awards ceremony will take place on Nov. 5, and be broadcast on BBC America on Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.

"Benedict Cumberbatch has had a remarkable year, and as one of the UK's leading talents he truly exemplifies the continued respect that British talents have garnered around the globe," Chairman of BAFTA Los Angeles Gary Dartnall says in a statement. Naturally optimistic Tom Hiddleston unlocks 'melancholy side' to play vampire in Only Lovers Left Alive

Tom Hiddleston had to play down his "irritating optimism" to get into his latest role of a "melancholy" vampire.

The Thor star plays Adam, alongside Tilda Swinton's Eve, in Only Lovers Left Alive, and playing the reclusive musician was a "big stretch" for him, he said.

Speaking about his character at an event at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank looking ahead to the Toronto and Venice film festivals, he said: "He is romantic, and melancholy, and poetic, and sensitive, deeply creative, and nostalgic for a pre-digital age where creativity was more of an endeavour...and he's a vampire."

Hiddleston described working with Swinton as "amazing", adding: "She's an extraordinary, extraordinary artist. It really felt like a dance in a strange way because Adam and Eve became alive as much as we invested in them."

A tale about the relationship between the two vampires, the London-born actor said Swinton's character in the film complemented Adam.

"In a way her breadth can hold Adam's complexity, and it's really a love story between these two fine and delicate creatures of the night," he said.

Hiddleston said he could see similarities between himself and Adam, but added that he is a much more optimistic and happy person.

"There's a lot of me in Adam for sure, but Adam is also darker than I am," he said.

Adding: "John Hurt is in the film and Adam is described by his character as a 'suicidally romantic scoundrel'.

"I have probably an irritating optimism sometimes in myself and I had to turn the volume on that down."

Taking on the role did not intimidate him and he said he enjoyed challenging himself.

TILDA SWINTON INJECTS her own brand of otherworldly-cool into Jim Jarmusch’s latest movie Only Lovers Left Alive, an unusual comedy that puts a spin on the age-old vampire genre. The film, the last English-language entry competing for the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, sees Swinton play Eve, a grungy but erudite vampire — who’s married to a forlorn vampire musician, Adam, played by Tom Hiddleston. Several-hundred-year-old Adam — of Biblical fame — has been living quite happily ever since being expelled from the Garden of Eden.



That is, until the 21st century came along with its excesses and greed and pushed him into a full-flung existential crisis. He cracks, and orders a wooden bullet to kill himself.

The film quirkily spruces up vampire lore. Adam and Eve are not about blood-sucking and murder — but refined lovers of literature, science, music and learning in general.

It’s not like they can just dump the bodies in the Thames with the tuberculosis sufferers like in old times, she says. Now, in the 21st century, they get their blood from the blood-transfusion section of a hospital. Alongside this, John Hurt plays a vampire Christopher Marlowe, who’s still bitter that Shakespeare became more famous.

Swinton said the film provided a unique opportunity to reinvent the vampire genre.

“There’s a feeling of beautiful luxury about approaching this kind of portrait, because you can come with a Martian’s-eye view... We were able to create our own lexicon,” she said. For instance, in the film the vampires elegantly cover their mouths and have a strange ritual with gloves that goes unexplained.

At heart, the film is the love story between Adam and Eve, who try to rekindle their love despite living in different places, he in Detroit and she in Tangiers. It is as touching as it is odd.

Only Lovers Left Alive, the languorous new comedy from Jim Jarmusch, centres on two vampires in reflective mood. They are Adam and Eve – perhaps the Adam and Eve – and they are played by Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston to draculine perfection. Swinton and Hiddleston, you imagine, would require very few adjustments to convince as two members of the beautiful undead. Perhaps the make-up team sprayed on a little fake tan and left it at that.

Jarmusch's picture was the second-last to screen in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and the weary audience were right in step with its drowsy, meditative tone. When the film begins, the two lovers are on opposite sides of the globe. Adam is in a crumbling mansion on the outskirts of Detroit, a city that itself looks thoroughly bled dry; Eve resides by a souk in Tangiers.

Each has a reliable supply of fresh blood at hand: Adam from a bribable haematologist at the local hospital, and Eve from Kit Marlowe – yes, that Kit Marlowe – who, in the Jarmusch world, is also a vampire, is played by John Hurt, and wrote the complete works of Shakespeare.

Early on, Eve flies to Detroit and the couple are happily reunited. They drive around the city at night visiting points of interest to vampires – “Look, there’s Jack White’s house,” says Adam – and sup top grade Type O Negative plasma from dainty glass goblets. Afterwards they slump backwards in a spaced-out state, utterly bloody-minded.

That's how I lovingly think of Only Lovers Left Alive, a romantic drama written and directed by art house auteur Jim Jarmusch that stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as vampire lovers. It seems utterly outlandish, and yet oddly perfect. In the film, Hiddleston plays a vampire/rock musician called Adam. Swinton is his Eve, literally—her name is Eve. And together these two live in undead bliss…until Eve's spunky little sister Ava (played by Stoker's Mia Wasikowska) turns up.

Only Lovers Left Alive is poised to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25th. And in anticipation of its debut, io9 has uncovered a pair of clips that give us our first look at these lovers in action. Up top is a clip that shows Adam and Eve reuniting. Even without True Blood-styled speedy vamp sex, it's pretty damn hot, yet totally SFW. Watching this, it's easy to see why Hiddleston was considered for The Crow reboot.

Only Lovers Left Alive,” a vampire film by Jim Jarmusch, has been added to the lineup in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, its organizers said.

Mr. Jarmusch, who won the festival’s Grand Prix in 2005 for his comedy drama “Broken Flowers,” wrote and directed “Only Lovers Left Alive,” which stars Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers”) and Tilda Swinton (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”) as paramours who drift apart and reunite over the centuries. The cast also includes Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt and Anton Yelchin.

The all-star Competition lineup for next month's Cannes Film Festival just got a little starrier. And sexier. "Only Lovers Left Alive," a vampire romance from veteran independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, was one of the more surprising omissions when the Official Selection was unveiled last week: Jarmusch has a long history with Cannes, after all, and the film was widely assumed to be ready in time. What was the problem?

Nothing, as it turns out. Cannes usually adds one or two films to the lineup in the weeks following the initial announcement, and so "Only Lovers Left Alive" is this year's fashionably late arrival to the Competition, brining the number of Palme d'Or contenders to a nice round 20. And we mean fashionable: with a cast led by Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, this arthouse addition to the post-"Twilight" vampire craze looks to be one of the festival's hottest red-carpet attractions
