Tom Hiddleston’s 5 best impressions, From the Cookie Monster to Alan Rickman

Tilda Swinton has become the latest celebrity to experience Tom Hiddleston’s knack for uncanny impressions.

Tilda stars in Jim Jarmusch-directed vampire flick Only Lovers Left Alive with Hiddleston, and revealed that her co-star spent a lot of their time together dazzling her with impressions.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: ‘We just sort of chewed it and had a great time. We were nocturnal quite a lot, and we played all sorts of silly stuff. He does quite a lot of impressions pretty constantly.’

While admitting she hadn’t heard Tom do an impersonation of her she added that ‘I have seen his Jim Jarmusch and its very good!’

Hiddleston has been getting Hiddlestoners hot under the collar with his scarily accurate mimicry, but which impression is the best? Here’s our (not definitive) ranking.

5) Chris Evans

Captain America Chris Evans has starred with Hiddleston in Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Thor: The Dark World (albeit briefly), and the pair have done quite a few press rounds, so its unsurprising that Tom has got Evans’ mannerisms on point.

Verdict: While cute, it’s not one of Tom’s better ones though, and nothing beats Evans’ actual speaking voice. Nothing.

4) Samuel L Jackson

It’s a big risk taking on someone as legendary as Samuel L Jackson, but not only does Tom have a go, he puts a Jackson spin on his much-loved Marvel villain Loki.

Verdict: The ‘I am burdened with glorious mother*****g purpose’ line is gold, but you can’t take on Samuel L Jackson and win.

We think of Hollywood movies  as having their beginnings in swanky restaurants in the warm climate of Southern California, but 'The Avengers' director Joss Whedon has revealed that the inspiration for a sequel came to him while drinking in a London pub.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansen, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston  and Mark Ruffalo, the original movie took over $1.4bn worldwide, so it was never likely that there wouldn't be a sequel. However the director of the original movie has revealed that he had serious doubts - until he went for a pint and fish and chips.

According to The Press Association Whedon said: "There's a business aspect to it and I would be disingenuous not to say that, but the question for me is, do I have another story to tell about these people?

"So we worked on the business side of it and I didn't think it was going to happen - I was like 'I'm never going to do this again.' But once they worked on the business aspect of it I thought that seems fair and cool, so the question was, Do I have another thing to say

Nearly half a year ago when promoting The Avengers, Tom Hiddleston told a cute anecdote about the first time he was in costume as Loki and got to see his castmates similarly suited up. His first scene with the group, you see, was actually at the very end of the movie. He told Access Hollywood that he got up to a little bit of Loki-style mischief:

The scene: It was last call at the Virgin Mobile takeover of the Storys building and, like the multitude of stars that graced its twin red carpets throughout the last week, the mobile company pulled out all the stops for its final hurrah: a post-screening, two-story fete for the Chris Evans, Winona Ryder gangster flick, The Iceman.

As has become custom, the room filled up with door watchers around midnight, followed shortly by the talent — which also included Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon (who plays a prohibition officer on the show, but made a b-line to the bar as soon as he arrived to enjoy a well-deserved red wine) and Ray Liotta – quietly making their way into the mix.

Also making appearances were two bad boys of cinema: the seemingly ubiquitous Stephen Dorff and, in his surprise TIFF 2012 debut, Gerard Butler.

Dorff seemed to float around the room, mugging and nearly causing the place to burn down when a photographer accidently kicked a burning candle onto a wood table to take a photo of Dorff and Shannon together.

Butler, meanwhile, was more than happy to accommodate a series of fetching advances from the female partygoers, who appeared to swoon en masse when news of his arrival swept across the two-story jam.

ALBUQUERQUE – Saving the world is serious business for a superhero. But when Robert Downey Jr. starts a battle scene on the set of The Avengers, he doesn't exactly have on an Iron Man face.

Just before cameras roll, the smiling actor whispers up a competition with his co-stars — Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). Whoever gives the most distracting off-camera look to Tom Hiddleston (enemy Loki) wins.

"For an entire take, they are all giving these seductive, come-on faces," Hiddleston says. "I had to fight to keep a straight face."

Laughter, it turns out, is a powerful weapon in the Avengers arsenal as the film hits theaters May 4. The greatest collection of comic-book superheroes ever assembled on-screen brings plenty of humor in the movie — and even more humor off-screen, thanks to Downey.

"We look at him as our quarterback," Evans says. "He's always smiling. And that's infectious."

Tom Hiddleston is perfect. What else is new? We thought a man with a double first from Cambridge and an astonishing start to his acting career would have something interesting and articulate to say about himself. We were right. (OH NO THEY DIDN'T)

Tom Hiddleston shakes his head and laughs. It’s been some journey from the darkness of a cinema in Malmo, Sweden, where four years ago, during a break from filming the first season of Wallander, he spent an evening watching Downey Jr signal his spectacular return to form in the first instalment of Iron Man.

 Now, in The Avengers, the superhero film to end them all, this charming Old Etonian and Cambridge graduate reprises his role as Loki, the baddie from Thor, and gets to do battle with a line-up of Marvel Comics’ most iconic characters: Iron Man (Downey Jr), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

But first, back to that evening in 2008. Hiddleston was in Sweden having landed a small part as the sidekick to Kenneth Branagh’s brow-beaten detective. Up to that point, he’d made a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances in TV dramas, starred in a small British film and won rave reviews for his stage work, collecting an Olivier Award in the process.

Tom Hiddleston: 'Avengers' trailer racking up the hits (THE FLORIDA TIMES UNION)

The trailer for Marvel's "The Avengers" is a crowded affair with familiar faces: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), along with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

We're just two months (May 4) from seeing what all the individual superhero movies have been building up to.The trailer, which has been exploding on the internet (Marvel says it set an iTunes record with 13.7 million views in the first 24 hours), looks pretty promising: Admit it, it's kind of a kick to see them all together. And the destruction rained down from the skies looks state-of-the-art.
