Colin Firth a no show so far at Toronto International Film Festival JIM SLOTEK, QMI AGENCY

Colin Firth and Emily Blunt in Arthur Newman

Robert Redford's not doing a press conference at TIFF (and darned little else) for his directing/starring turn in The Company You Keep, and star Shia LaBeouf is a no-show.

There's no presser for Bill Murray's much-talked-about turn as FDR in Hyde Park on the Hudson (loveable flake Murray will supposedly be here for the red carpet, but he's more likely to crash your golf tournament or birthday party than do an interview).

And what about Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King's Speech)? So far, no appearance and no promotion at TIFF for his latest film Arthur Newman.

Co-star Emily Blunt -- who IS talking a lot about her part in the Bruce Willis/Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie Looper -- admits she's disappointed not to be doing press for Arthur Newman.

"I guess it's because it's not very big -- it only cost about $7 million -- and we found out rather late that the film would be in Toronto," she says about its non-promotion.

"But people will see it and it's very strange and beautiful. My sweet friend Colin and I play kind of social outcasts who try and escape their miserable pasts and identities. And they find solace in each other in the most unconventional love story.

Robert Redford and Brendan Gleeson team up in tense new thriller (INDEPENDENT)

HOLLYWOOD-legend Robert Redford and Brendan Gleeson have teamed up in a new thriller, which is soon to open in the US.

In All the President's Men, Robert Redford famously played a reporter hunting clues that led to President Richard Nixon's downfall. In The Company You Keep, the Oscar winner is the one who is hunted by a journalist, this time played by Shia LaBeouf.

Unlike the 1976 account of the Watergate scandal, The Company You Keep is a fictional thriller based on a 2003 novel by Neil Gordon, and follows a former leftwing American militant whose past comes back to haunt him.

Redford plays Jim Grant, a respectable lawyer and widower with a young daughter whose life is thrown into turmoil when his secret identity, as a member of The Weather Underground decades earlier, is revealed by a tenacious reporter.

Lawless Dish About Shia, Tom Hardy, and Jessica Chastain By Michael Musto Fri., Aug. 31 2012 at 10:20 AM 3 Comments Categories: Film (THE VILLAGE VOICE)

At a BoConcept dinner at Chateau Chang last night, I met Dany Wolf, who executive produced Lawless, the period drama about a bootlegging gang.

On command, Wolf graciously gave me some insight into the all-star shooting.

*Said Wolf:

"Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy showed up on the set looking bigger than we needed.

"The film is set in the Prohibition era and no one had buff bodies then.

"But they were built up, Tom because he was getting ready to play Bane in Dark Knight Rises.

"Still, it works in the movie.

"The funny thing is, at Cannes, they were both skinny again!"

*In another story about picking up extra poundage, Wolf told me that when Hardy was driving with Jessica Chastain one day, they came across a stray dog on the freeway and became deeply concerned.

They promptly took the dog into the car, got him checked out and licensed, and proceeded to share custody of him!

Yikes.

I don't like hearing stories about nice celebrities.

I prefer them a little bit...Lawless.

Brendan Gleeson: 'The Company You Keep' Trailer: Robert Redford, (VIDEO) The Huffington Post | By Christopher Rosen

"The Company You Keep" doesn't have an official U.S. release date just yet, but with an amazing cast and crew and a pair of high-profile festival bows in Venice and Toronto, expect one to get announced shortly. That's something you should be excited about, because the first trailer for "The Company You Keep" looks like a cross between "Enemy of the State" and "The Fugitive."

Directed by Robert Redford, and starring (deep breath) Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Brit Marling, Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Sam Elliot and Redford himself, "The Company You Keep" tells the story of a young journalist (LaBeouf) who discovers the identity of a former Weather Underground activist (Redford) wanted for the murder of a security guard 30 years earlier. More good news: Lem Dobbs ("The Limey," "Haywire") wrote the script, which is an adaptation of Neil Gordon's novel.

Tom Hardy: Lawless Reviewed: Dark & Haunting With Flawless Lead Performances - By Rayne Wilson (SABOTAGE TIMES)

From the director of ‘The Road’, comes this prohibition-set drama following the lives of three brothers running a bootlegging business. Refusing to allocate a portion of their earnings to the corrupt authorities earns them the wrath of ‘special agent’ Charlie Rakes (played by an unrecognisable Guy Pearce) whose flagrant disregard for the law sees tensions rise between the law force and the locals.

There are a lot of different narrative strands at work here, but the plot tends to alternate between brooding elder brother Forest Bondurant (Tom Hardy) and runt of the litter youngest brother Jack (Shia LaBeouf) and they are arguable front runners in a cast of superb actors. As the enigmatic Forest, the unspoken head of the household, Hardy possesses an almost ageless quality, which makes him unbelievably interesting to watch. Forest is a character steeped in mystery and legend and Hillcoat cleverly plays on this through a combination of camera work and Hardy’s intuitive performance.

Hardy is shot in such a way as to emphasise his formidable size and youthful good looks yet he carries himself with a kind of weary fatigue and communicates through a series of unintelligible grunts, making it impossible to deduce his age and contributing to the mystical aura that surrounds him. Parts of his dialogue are lost in the garbled thickness of his southern drawl, but you almost get the sense that you don’t need to understand him, as his hulking physicality is such an imposing presence.

Despite the attention paid to Jack’s coming of age as he attempts to ape his brothers and become more involved in the family business, the viewer can’t help but pine for Hardy’s presence when he is off-screen. This is not to discount LaBeouf’s fine portrayal of youngest brother Frank; he turns in a very capable performance and this film is as much a coming of age story as it is an insight into the hardships of living through the Depression. However, Hardy is an acting beast and LaBeouf is smart to simply compliment his performance rather than try to counter it. You get a real sense of the brotherly camaraderie between them and Hillcoat does a superb job of communicating this without obvious exposition, instead opting to use simple yet effective visual imagery.

Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf Get Bloody in New 'Lawless' Trailer Add CommentJuly 07, 2012 04:31:32 GMT (ACES)

Another violent trailer for John Hillcoat's "Lawless (2012)" has landed online. Making its way out via Yahoo! Movies, the new trailer unveils more gunfight scenes involving Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and their on-screen nemesis Guy Pearce.

At one point, Tom and Shia are featured being soaked in blood and sporting bruised face. In addition to the new trailer, The Weinstein Company reveals an infographic guide to the handguns used by Tom, Shia and Guy in the movie. Released via MTV, the image describes Tom's gun as "Belly Gun", Shia's as "Webley Break Top Revolver", and Guy's as "Smith & Wesson Military & Police".

Adapted from a historical novel of the same name by Matt Bondurant, "Lawless" revolves around three Bondurant brothers who run a small-scale moonshining family business. They later find their bootlegging business under threat in Prohibition-era Franklin County, Virginia. The story is based on a true story of Matt's grandfather and great uncles.

Tom Hardy in Cannes: I Love Marlon Brando, But I Worship Gary Oldman Published: May 19, 2012 @ 5:34 am (THE WRAP)

For those who’ve been waiting for Tom Hardy to become a movie star, this may be his year.

The British actor stars as a moonshine bootlegger in the Prohibition-era drama “Lawless,” which screened at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, and plays the villain Bane in the much-anticipated Batman epic, “Dark Knight Rises,” this summer.

At  the news conference following the screening on Saturday, Hardy – seated beside costar Jessica Chastain and director John Hillcoat – was asked about being compared to Marlon Brando.

“I haven’t even seen ‘The Godfather,’ I haven’t seen ‘On the Waterfront,’ I haven’t seen ‘Streetcar Named Desire,’” said the often monosyllabic Hardy, who has grown a beard.

The film tells the true story of the three Bondurant brothers, scraping out an existence in the backwoods of Appalachia during Prohibition. Shia LaBeouf plays the younger brother Jack, and Australian actor Jason Clarke plays middle brother Howard.

Chastain plays a woman who appears from Chicago and takes care of their saloon in a violent and unpredictable milieu.

Hardy said he was flattered, but only knew Brando from photos, and any similarity in acting style “is not conscious, but it’s very high praise.”

Tom Hardy & Shia LaBeouf in First Trailer for Crime Drama 'Lawless' by Ethan Anderton April 24, 2012 Source: Yahoo (FIRST SHOWING)

We just got our first official photo of Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke as bootlegging brothers in the period crime drama Lawless from director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition), and lo and behold a trailer has just shown up as well. Brazen and fearless, three young rebel brothers helped build the American Dream in this exuberant tale of what was to become crime’s first major gold rush. I could do without the quick black and white freeze frames, but all of the performances look great including supporting turns from Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce and Mia Wasikowska. Watch!
