Cannes: Lionsgate Nabs U.S. Rights to 'Genius' With Colin Firth

On the first official day of the Cannes film festival, Lionsgate has nabbed U.S. rights to hot project Genius, starring Colin Firth.

Directed by Michael Grandage, the film, also starring Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Guy Pearce, has been considered one of the hottest projects going into the festival.

The film, now in postroduction, is an adaptation of A. Scott Berg's biography about renowned book editor Max Perkins, who worked with Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Kingsman: The Secret Service actor Firth stars as Perkins, while Law plays Wolfe.

Benedict Cumberbatch Replacing Guy Pearce in Johnny Depp's Whitey Bulger Pic

Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to replace Guy Pearce in the Johnny Depp-starring Whitey Bulger crime drama from Warner Bros. and Cross Creek Pictures, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie, which is based on the book Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI, and a Devil's Deal, is now shooting in Boston with Scott Cooper directing.

Pearce was to have played Whitey's brother Billy Bulger but dropped out a few weeks ago for reasons unknown. The studios is trying to close a deal for Cumberbatch to step in, although he was approached a few weeks ago.

Rosamund Pike And Guy Pearce To Star In Aussie Drama Violet Town published: 2012-11-28 08:24:03 Author: Kristy Puchko (CINEMA BLEND)

The beautiful English ingénue Rosamund Pike first drew notice Stateside in 2005's Pride and Prejudice, where she played the loving Jane Bennet opposite the Oscar-nominated Keira Knightley. Though roles followed in the Anthony Hopkins/Ryan Gosling vehicle Fracture and the Oscar-nominated biopic An Education, Pike hasn't yet blown up. Coming up she'll appear in supporting parts in Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher and Simon Pegg's Hector and the Search for Happiness, but thankfully a leading role is in her future, thanks to a forthcoming drama out of Australia.

In their first joint venture Mushroom Pictures and Morrissey Molloy Entertainment are producing an adaptation of Steven Carroll’s novel The Art Of The Engine Driver penned by Matt Cameron. The film, rechristened Violet Town, centers on a married couple attending a New Years Eve Party in 1957 Melbourne. But what should be a night of joy and frivolity turns dramatic when secrets buried within their suburban lives are unearthed. Deadline reports Pike and Guy Pearce will play the spouses with skeletons in their closet. Bryan Brown, best known as Tom Cruise's buddy in Cocktail, is also attached, though his role is unknown. Mark Joffe, who directed the charming Janeane Garofalo rom-com The MatchMaker, will helm.

At a BoConcept dinner at Chateau Chang last night, I met Dany Wolf, who executive produced Lawless, the period drama about a bootlegging gang.

On command, Wolf graciously gave me some insight into the all-star shooting.


*Said Wolf:

"Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy showed up on the set looking bigger than we needed.

"The film is set in the Prohibition era and no one had buff bodies then.

"But they were built up, Tom because he was getting ready to play Bane in Dark Knight Rises.

"Still, it works in the movie.

"The funny thing is, at Cannes, they were both skinny again!"


*In another story about picking up extra poundage, Wolf told me that when Hardy was driving with Jessica Chastain one day, they came across a stray dog on the freeway and became deeply concerned.

They promptly took the dog into the car, got him checked out and licensed, and proceeded to share custody of him!

Yikes.

I don't like hearing stories about nice celebrities.

I prefer them a little bit...Lawless.

Guy Pearce: Hardy is a mountain (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

Guy Pearce has described Tom Hardy as an "emotional mountain".

The actor is starring alongside Tom in the new movie Lawless and was full of praise for the British hunk.

Guy admitted it was difficult not to feel intimidated by Tom.

"It's so brilliant that Tom Hardy is playing the role, because he is the most exciting actor I've seen in a long time... And he brings a weight, an integrity and a power to the screen that is incredibly compelling?," he told website Flicks and Bits. "The first scene that we had together was me feeling like I'm running rings around this man, not being intimidated by him. And that was very difficult, because he's like a mountain, a mount emotionally and physically. I think that will translate on screen."

Tom Hardy: Lawless Reviewed: Dark & Haunting With Flawless Lead Performances - By Rayne Wilson (SABOTAGE TIMES)

From the director of ‘The Road’, comes this prohibition-set drama following the lives of three brothers running a bootlegging business. Refusing to allocate a portion of their earnings to the corrupt authorities earns them the wrath of ‘special agent’ Charlie Rakes (played by an unrecognisable Guy Pearce) whose flagrant disregard for the law sees tensions rise between the law force and the locals.

There are a lot of different narrative strands at work here, but the plot tends to alternate between brooding elder brother Forest Bondurant (Tom Hardy) and runt of the litter youngest brother Jack (Shia LaBeouf) and they are arguable front runners in a cast of superb actors. As the enigmatic Forest, the unspoken head of the household, Hardy possesses an almost ageless quality, which makes him unbelievably interesting to watch. Forest is a character steeped in mystery and legend and Hillcoat cleverly plays on this through a combination of camera work and Hardy’s intuitive performance.

Hardy is shot in such a way as to emphasise his formidable size and youthful good looks yet he carries himself with a kind of weary fatigue and communicates through a series of unintelligible grunts, making it impossible to deduce his age and contributing to the mystical aura that surrounds him. Parts of his dialogue are lost in the garbled thickness of his southern drawl, but you almost get the sense that you don’t need to understand him, as his hulking physicality is such an imposing presence.

Despite the attention paid to Jack’s coming of age as he attempts to ape his brothers and become more involved in the family business, the viewer can’t help but pine for Hardy’s presence when he is off-screen. This is not to discount LaBeouf’s fine portrayal of youngest brother Frank; he turns in a very capable performance and this film is as much a coming of age story as it is an insight into the hardships of living through the Depression. However, Hardy is an acting beast and LaBeouf is smart to simply compliment his performance rather than try to counter it. You get a real sense of the brotherly camaraderie between them and Hillcoat does a superb job of communicating this without obvious exposition, instead opting to use simple yet effective visual imagery.

Another violent trailer for John Hillcoat's "Lawless (2012)" has landed online. Making its way out via Yahoo! Movies, the new trailer unveils more gunfight scenes involving Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and their on-screen nemesis Guy Pearce.

At one point, Tom and Shia are featured being soaked in blood and sporting bruised face. In addition to the new trailer, The Weinstein Company reveals an infographic guide to the handguns used by Tom, Shia and Guy in the movie. Released via MTV, the image describes Tom's gun as "Belly Gun", Shia's as "Webley Break Top Revolver", and Guy's as "Smith & Wesson Military & Police".

 Adapted from a historical novel of the same name by Matt Bondurant, "Lawless" revolves around three Bondurant brothers who run a small-scale moonshining family business. They later find their bootlegging business under threat in Prohibition-era Franklin County, Virginia. The story is based on a true story of Matt's grandfather and great uncles.

‘Prometheus’ premiere: Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace walk the blue carpet The stars came out to celebrate the world premiere Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi thriller (NEW YORK DAILY NEWS)

LONDON — The stars of “Prometheus” landed in London on a special blue carpet Thursday night for the world premiere of Sir Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi thriller.

Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce joined the director to meet fans at Leicester Square.

“Prometheus” takes its title from the spaceship in the story. The vessel goes on a mission to explore signs of alien life and the origins of mankind.

The film marks Scott’s return to the sci-fi genre after classics such as “Alien” and “Blade Runner.”

Twentieth Century Fox revealed the film has been given an “R” rating due to scenes of “sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.” The worry is that the big budget film would suffer as it has a potential appeal to younger audiences, who now can’t attend without being accompanied by an adult. When questioned about this, Scott outlined that artistic integrity was his central concern, not cutting corners.

“What you don’t want to do is to undermine the fundamental punch of the movie. If it means taking things out and therefore diminishing it then you shouldn’t do that,” he said.

Lawless – Following a beyond stellar first trailer, we’ve got these new looks at Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Shia LaBeouf, Mia Wasikowska, and Guy Pearce in director John Hillcoat’s bootlegging-centered period drama.  The film opens on August 31st.

Anna Karenina – A new image of Keira Knightley from director Joe Wright’s (Atonement) adaptation of the classic novel.  The film also stars Jude Law and Aaron Johnson and opens on November 9th.

Michael Fassbender: Ahead of Release Prometheus Smashes IMAX UK Pre-Sales Records (INQUISITOR)

We knew it was going to be big. But this big? 20th Century Fox and Ridley Scott’s marketing of Prometheus has, as we all know, been a tour de force so far. And it looks like it’s paid off.


The forthcoming epic space adventure has ratched up pre-sale figures of 18, 287 (and counting) at the BFI’s (British Film Institute) IMAX theater in London, in its first week of ticket going on sale.

In monetary terms this equates to £ 293, 312 ($ 474, 687) and smashes existing first week pre-sales records. BFI is also  reporting record-busting first day pre-sale figures of £ 137,000 ( $221, 717). Impressive.

Last weekend’s Prometheus UK TV spot during the first ad break of primetime drama Homeland and the TV spots shown since, can certainly be given credit for some of these figures. But it’s just as likely the film’s premise: a crew of scientists and explorers in search of answers to humanity’s origin - and Scott’s reputation – have also captured the imagination of UK audiences.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green, Idris Elba, Noomi Rapace and Guy Pearce, Prometheus is being hailed as a triumphant return by Sir Ridley Scott to the genre he so profoundly contributed to, with earlier classics like Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982.) The film opens in the UK on June 1 and the U.S on June 8.

New Image from Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS Featuring Michael Fassbender [Updated with Final Trailer Preview] (Collider)

In lieu of “Epic Trailers Week”, the first trailer for director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is set to debut tomorrow. The studio has already released two “trailer previews” which reveal a bit of footage from the film as well as some behind-the-scenes material. Today Fox has released a new image from the sci-fi pic, giving us a new look at star Michael Fassbender. The actor plays an android in the Alien-tied movie, but that’s just about all we know about his character at the moment. The image isn’t too revealing, as it just shows Fassbender on some planet looking perplexed and holding a flashlight. From the material we’ve seen thus far, all signs point to Prometheus being a horror film which I’m very happy with. We should know more once the trailer hits tomorrow.

Actress Kate Winslet is set to fete her Mildred Pierce co-star Guy Pearce with a special award for his career achievements at an event recognising notable Australians. Pearce will be one of three guests of honour, alongside basketball player Luc Longley and musical duo Air Supply, at the ninth annual G'Day USA Los Angeles Black Tie Gala on 14 January.

G'Day USA Organising Committee Chairman Wally Mariani says, "We are thrilled to have Kate Winslet present her Mildred Pierce co-star Guy Pearce with the Excellence in Film & Television Award at this year's G'Day USA Los Angeles Black Tie Gala, especially the night before the Golden Globes, when they are both nominees."
The prizegiving is part of the three-week G'Day USA Australia Week programme.
Previous honourees include Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts.

The King's Speech - Reel vs. Real: THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

In the original King's Speech script, Best didn't have a single line. Screenwriter David Seidler ended up giving her some dialogue.

She divorced twice before marrying former King Edward VIII, six months after he abdicated the throne. Essentially exiled from the royal family, she and her husband remained controversial celebrities for the rest of their lives as the Duchess and Duke of Windsor.

He has said growing up in Australia aided him in perfecting the role. "An English actor might have been a bit more fearful about being so raw with this character and possibly irritating that famous royal family that lives down the road. But I'd already been shipped out to Australia. They couldn't ship me any farther," said Pearce.

He reigned for less than 11 months before abdicating in 1936 in favor of marrying American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

He scored a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his role. "As an Australian, I'm as excited to be recognized and honored by the Academy as my character must have been when his London speech therapy business flourished when the future King of England happened to pop by one day," he tells THR.

Though he had no medical degree or professional training, Lionel Logue successfully cured the King of his stammer. Their friendship lead to his knighthood as member of the Royal Victorian Order.

"I wanted to do her justice," the British actress tells THR of playing the Queen (she earned a best actress Oscar nomination). "Not just make her the archetypical woman behind the man in the background ... [I wanted to give her] some authority."

She was the Queen consort of King George VI from 1936 until her husband's death in 1952, accompanying him husband on diplomatic tours to France and the United States in the run-up to World War II. She also supported him as he conquered his stammer and stood by his side as he delivered his rousing 1939 speech.

Though he is most likely to win the best actor Oscar, Firth tells THR, "I was full of doubt a lot of the time" while shooting. "Doubt because we couldn't really know all the history, doubt because I wasn't always sure I was getting to the bottom of things, and I really wanted to."

He took over the British throne following his older brother's abdication in 1936. Because of a crippling stutter, he was terribly shy. With the help of an unorthodox Australian speech therapist, he conquered the stammer and famously addressed millions of people around the world in a live radio broadcast on Sept. 3, 1939, after Britain declared war on Germany. A call to patriotism, it was one of the best speeches he had ever made.
