It’s no wonder Hollywood’s 1% was looking especially fat and happy at this year’s Golden Globes ceremony; the “Global Food Harmony” menu featured chocolate flown in from Switzerland and honey caramel from France. Terrapass even tabulated the carbon footprint left behind on just those two items along with hazelnuts from Italy almond paste from Spain to come up with 9,261 lbs of CO2 emissions to get them all to big event, raising the ire of Global Green U.S.A.
“Flying in ingredients from around the world is unsustainable and only adds to growing greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming,” a Global Green U.S.A. spokesperson lamented to the UK's Daily Mail.
On the other end of the spectrum, Livia Giuggioli Firth, wife of the actor Colin Firth, hosted the third annual Green Carpet Challenge event at the Soho House in West Hollywood. Livia Firth, who is the creative director of London eco-consulting group Eco Age Ltd., recruited A-list designers like Giorgio Armani and Stella McCartney to design a series of “green” dresses for her to wear to the season’s award shows. The dress she wore to the Golden Globes was an Armani creation fashioned from recycled water bottles.

Colin Firth: Livia Firth (Eco-fashionista) kicks off 2012 Green Carpet Challenge (Mother Nature Network)
Eco-fashionista wears first-ever sustainable Girogio Armani gown to the Golden Globe Awards.
Mon, Jan 16 2012 at 4:20 PM EST
For the third year running, Livia Firth is bringing sustainable fashion to Hollywood's red carpets through her Green Carpet Challenge. The successful eco-entrepreneur, fashionista, and wife of actor Colin Firth kicked things off last night at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards by donning a stunning black Giorgio Armani gown made from recycled plastic bottles.
“When I put the dress on it felt incredible,” she wrote on her blog for Vogue UK. “It transports me to Italy in the 1960s. Armani just knows how to do this so well! There is also a really fun geisha reference in this dress with the ornate lining – very in line with the current Armani look. But the real achievement for me is that last night the GCC proved that sophistication and sustainability can go together. That’s the victory that Armani has delivered for us.”
Firth has elevated this year's challenge to include more than ten top designers from around the world to contribute sustainable and ethical designs. Tom Ford, Gucci, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Yves, Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Valentino, Roger Vivier, Alberta Ferretti, and Ermenegildo Zegna are the names listed as participating throughout 2012.
“It is absolutely the right time to take the challenge up a gear, so we are working with our favorite world-class designers and actors as GCC ambassadors,” Firth writes. “Fashion is a brilliant communicator. The fashion we communicate through the GCC promotes social justice, environmental integrity and the very best in design.”
While the fashion industry has slowly been embracing sustainable practices over the last several years, the thrust of the movement has generally been from a new generation of designers like Stella McCartney. It's encouraging to see more established brands take the leap by teaming up with Firth for this year's greening of the runway.
“Livia’s passion for the mission of this project is infectious,” Gucci’s Frida Giannini said.”We all have a collective responsibility towards future generations to minimise our impact on the environment and through this initiative we can hopefully show that you don’t have to make any compromises in design and creativity when working with environmentally friendly materials.”
For her Globes' dress, Giorgio Armani used recycled plastic bottles sourced from Northern Italy to achieve the desired look and feel.
"Armani went for fibre from Newlife, a project developed by Filature Miroglio that takes place in Northern Italy," writes Green Carpet Challenge co-founder Lucy Siegle. "Rather than a vertical supply chain this has been developed horizontally through a system of certified partnerships, all in Italy. This means it's fully traceable - which gets a big thumbs up from the GCC. The end product - the yarn - is fully derived from recycled plastic bottles."
As referenced in the article, it requires about thirty, one-and-a-half litre bottles to make one kilo (roughly 2.2 lbs.) of Newlife yarn. According to the product site, the company hopes to produce 10,000 tons a year by 2015 – thus avoiding adding some 72,000 tons of plastic material to landfills, and saving 343 million gallons of water for the creation of virgin material.
Since Hollywood's awards season has only just started, look for more sustainable fashion to grace the red carpet throughout 2012. Even better, Firth hopes to bring on some A-list actresses to participate. Who would you like to see go green on the red carpet?

Livia Firth’s 2012 Green Carpet Challenge to Feature A-List Stars (Ecorazzi)
Livia Firth’s 2012 Green Carpet Challenge to Feature A-List Stars
For the third year in a row, Livia Firth’s Green Carpet Challenge will once again grace the red carpets during Hollywood’s awards season – but with an exciting new twist. The successful entrepreneur and eco-fashionista (best known to many as “the wife of actor Colin Firth“), started the challenge in 2010 in partnership with Vogue UK. The idea was to wear only outfits that were sustainable or eco on the red carpet; thereby exposing the world to designers focused on ethical creations.
“I knew how talented this new breed of designer could be,’ Firth recently told Red Online. “Many had got so close to dressing actresses for major awards and then been bumped at the last minute by a major brand. It gave us the chance to show that Fairtrade supply chains and eco fibres could have aesthetic merit, as well as ethics.”
While Firth has been reticent to reveal full details about this year’s challenge, there are some tidbits that have dropped referencing the “expansion” she’s been hinting. According to interviews in Red and the UK Guardian, 10 top designers will be matched with 10 A-list stars to create and wear sustainable, ethical gowns.
Stella McCartney, Gucci, Tom Ford, Paul Smith, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen and Alberta Ferretti are just some of the famous designers we currently know about. Anna Loucha, who created the fair trade jewelry for Livia’s Oscar night will also be involved.
According to Firth, one of the aims of the GCC has always been to invite more actresses to participate – as goal that was realized last year when “Downton Abbey” star Elizabeth McGovern wore a locally sourced up-cycled wool dress by Henrietta Ludgate to the Royal Television Society Awards.
Based on tweets, it appears that Firth will also once again be involving charities into the mix – with Oxfam a guaranteed participant. Last year, Christie’s auctioned off both the Oscars and Golden Globes gowns (with the cash going to the Natural Resources Defense Council), while Oxfam auctioned off the rest.
Curious to know more? Stay tuned. With the Golden Globes kicking off this Sunday, it’s only a matter of time before some of those A-List green gown participants are revealed.

Macy's Scores Oscar Winner's Son For Modeling Campaign (Style Caster)
Want more style? Don't Miss...
It seems that more and more these days actors are getting involved in the world of fashion. From Mila Kunis landing the Spring Dior campaigns to James Franco staring in Gucci -- now comes word from WWD that Macy's has landed British actor Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons -- you might remember him from Red Riding Hood) for their INC line.
The photos will be online as well as plastered around 631 stores that carry the collection. I have a feeling these sexy pics will have the ladies buying their guys a whole lot more INC. Irons' makes the outfit look effortless and the clothes look spectacular on him -- but with that bone structure it's no surprise, right? Considering good ole' Max isn't that well-known in the United States this will certainly put him on the (hearthrob) map.
Seeing as this is the first time Macy's has used an actor for advertisements (outside of their celebrity collections), they sure as hell did a good job -- kudos. I just hope that they'll employ some extra cleaning help seeing the amount of drool of many teenage girls and a few boys will most likely be leaving on the floor.

Dame Helen Mirren tops over 50s style icon poll
28 November 2011
The Oscar-winning actress' classic, elegant and understated look saw off competition from internationally recognised 60s model Twiggy, to claim the title.
Making up the top five were actress turned activist Joanna Lumley in third, followed by Lulu in fourth and Dame Judi Dench.
A spokeswoman for Viyella, the clothing brand who commissioned the poll, said: ''Dame Helen Mirren has as much style, grace and elegance off screen as she does on it and is a fitting icon for the women of her generation.
''All too often we are bombarded with images of youth and temporary trends, so it's great to see such a varied list filled with women of real class.''
Former Spice Girl turned successful fashion designer Victoria Beckham was the youngest woman to appear on the list. The mum-of-four took a surprise spot just outside the top five, showing she has pulling power with those who appreciate refined fashion irrespective of age.
Out of 1,000 women polled, nine out of 10 admitted that they have started to enjoy shopping as they have got older. The same percentage said they took pride in their appearance and more than half said they never worry about dressing inappropriately for their age.
Pint-size pop princess Kylie Minogue took an impressive 12th place, while glowing talent show judge Amanda Holden clearly has the talent to take 14th.
A surprise name on the list is fashion conscious Samantha Cameron, the Prime Minister's wife, who followed bump-at-the-front Amanda Holden in 15th.
A Viyella spokeswoman added: ''Victoria Beckham has proven once again that she carries universal appeal.
''As the youngest woman in the results, she shows that women in their fifties aren't afraid to embrace younger styles when they're done the right way.''
''These results show that age really isn't a barrier to style or confidence. In fact, it can be quite the opposite.
''It's inspiring to see that many women over fifty are more comfortable in their self, confident in their style and brave enough to explore new clothing options.''
The full top 20 style icons for ladies over 50 is as follows:

Downton on the High Street: How Lord Grantham's girls have brought Edwardian elegance back to the shops
(love these clothes!!!!!)
By Jan Moir
Last updated at 1:26 AM on 15th October 2011
What manner of madness is this? Downton Abbey fashions, reinvented by (whisper it, ladies) the High Street?
Oh shiver me lawks and put an extra pennyworth o’ bobbin on the liberty corset, or whatever it is the mistress of the wardrobe doth do with her ladyship’s flannelette unspeakables and afternoon tea gowns.
Downton Abbey fashions for all? You mean that even shopgirls and the second maid of the coalscuttle can now afford to wear the kind of elegant velvets and fur shrugs that were once enjoyed only by the proper ladies of the aristocracy?
Blouse, £49, viyella. Palazzo pants, £15, dorothyperkins.com. Feather hair clip, £18, accessorize.com. Gloves, £69, aspinaloflondon.com
Cream chiffon dress, £150, houseof fraser.co.uk. Nude shoes, £59.99, zara. com. Bronze clutch, £45, dune.co.uk. Embellished hairband, £7.99, and earrings, £3.99, newlook.com
Well I never. This is the kind of thing that would give Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, as played by Dame Maggie Smith, a fit of the oyster-eyed vapours. Yet this is exactly what is happening.
Today, millions of women don’t just love watching Downton Abbey, the blockbuster ITV costume drama created by Julian Fellowes. They want to shop the look, too.
This season, sales of Downton period-perfect accessories such as silk gloves, empire-line velvet dresses and demure strings of pearls have surged.
The popularity of the drama series and the beauty of the costumes worn by the female cast has manifested itself in a demand for the discreet charms of the Edwardian-style fashions of the day.
No, not the mob caps and frilled pinnies of the downstairs crew. No one wants to head out on a Saturday night looking like Mrs Patmore the cook — unless you happen to be Christopher Biggins or perhaps even a slumming-it Russell Grant.
Burgundy dress, £150, coast-stores.com. Pearl necklace, £12.50, topshop.com. Pearl bracelet, £4, accessorize.com. Faux fur shrug, £68, corneliajames.com
Embellished dress, £325, jigsaw.co.uk. Lace gloves, £35, corneliajames.com
We’re drawing a line, too, through Violet’s gigantic lambskin hats, the approximate size and shape of a dishwasher. If you wore one of those walking down the street, children would just assume you were SpongeBob Squarepants’s mum. Simply not on.
Instead, the real fashion attraction for fans is the outfits worn by the blushing young ladies of Downton Abbey.
Swathed in jet beading and privilege, Lady Mary, Lady Sybil and Lady Edith — not to mention their unfeasibly youthful mother, Cora, Countess of Grantham — breakfast each day in silks and dine in satins.
They have to change about six times a day — lunch, hunting, tea, town, vicar-visiting, trembling like a mouse with unrequited Matthew-lust, furiously brushing hair in mirror before going to bed.
Whatever the occasion, theirs is a timeless elegance, one that speaks of an age when overtly sexy was unacceptable and anything emotive was unspoken and unseen.
Pleated skirt, £115, coast-stores.com. Betty Jackson 2 lace blouse, £110, johnlewis.com. Clutch, £49, dune.co.uk. Shoes, £65, aldoshoes.com
Let’s put it this way. The word JUICY on the back of your tracky-bums would definitely be frowned upon. At Downton Abbey, it is the whisper of a lace ruffle or the tiniest glimpse of ankle that provides the erotic charge.
As you can see, the charms of this decorous style have been reinterpreted today by designers using the same graceful long lines and rich yet muted colours. Here, there is lots of deep burgundy, such as in the dress by Coast and the coat by Wallis, offset by the gleam of pearls or a neat little cloche hat.
There are also ankle-skimming pleats, the repression of deep cuffs, prim button-backed blouses and a hint of skin behind layers of pale chiffon. Hairbands are modest, handbags are tiny. Remember, the ladies of Downton Abbey had no independence and nothing important to carry around. Excluding the soft toy that Lady Mary gave to Matthew to keep him safe in the Somme, of course!
Burgundy velvet dress with embellished belt, £325, austique. co.uk. Earrings, £3.99, newlook.com. Shrug, £89.90, massimo dutti.com
Coat, £90, wallis.co.uk. Faux fur stole, £45, lkbennett. com. Cloche hat, £50, johnlewis.com. Tights, £6, debenhams.com. Boots, £69.99, zara.com
The Great War changed everything at Downton Abbey, although this has yet to dawn on the inhabitants. Violet, for example, is an arch snob, desperate to ensure that the Crawley family keep their grappling hooks sunk deep into the summit of the social order and remain kingpins of the ruling classes.
She cannot see the change that is coming. That one day, women of all classes will indeed wear palazzo pants. Or the fact that John Lewis and Betty Jackson — no, milady, they are not the Abbey’s newly appointed footman and mistress of the bedchamber — will one day be producing the kind of sumptuous clothes that were once the sole prerogative of the aristocracy.
Jessica Fellowes, the niece of Julian, has written an excellent book to accompany the series. In The World Of Downton Abbey, she reveals that a few of the ladies’ costumes are vintage, some are hired, but most are made to order by the show’s wardrobe department. The modern fabrics used have to be ‘dipped down’ — dyed — to capture the muted tones of the day.
Velvet dress, £245, toast.co.uk. Pearl necklaces, £8 each, and embellished clutch, £32, accessorize.com. T-Bar shoes, £80, dune.co.uk
She also reveals that under their costumes, all the actresses wear plain, nude-coloured cling-resistant slips from M&S. Indeed, they love them so much they have become addicted to wearing them off-screen, too.
It is this mix of the old and the new that is perhaps so potent. I particularly love the long pleated skirt and wafty blouse combo. Just the thing to wear when bossing around the curiously scrumptious Bates.
Fetch me some tea! Iron that newspaper. Starch the master’s collar after you’ve steamed the hearth. And then come here and sit on my lap.
You see? You don’t need much of a Downton costume to get into Downton character.
The Downton ladies have to change about six times a day - lunch, hunting, tea, town, vicar-visiting, trembling like a mouse with unrequited Matthew-lust, furiously brushing hair in mirror before going to bed

The "Big Year" actress models Chanel, Dior and Jason Wu in the November issue and talks about Hollywood, her myriad of roles and the importance of being independent.
She played an icy cool Bond girl opposite Pierce Brosnan in 2002's Die Another Day, a Jane Austen heroine in 2005's Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley and a party girl in 2009's coming-of-age drama An Education. However, in the November issue of Town & Country, actress Rosamund Pike predicts that this will be her most significant year yet: "I feel like this will be the year that changed my life," she says. "I feel like I'm getting to be good at what I do."
Her career is on the rise. The 32-year-old British star appears alongside Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson in Fox 2000's comedy The Big Year, which hits theaters Friday. She also just started filming Paramount's 2013 thriller One Shot with Tom Cruise in Pittsburgh.
The Town & Country cover, which was shot in Beckley Park in Oxfordshire, England, by Koto Bolofo, features the elegant blonde seated on a bench in the stately home's gardens wearing a delicate Jason Wu lace top with a Dior Haute Couture embroidered tulle skirt and classic English wellies. Inside, the actress models ultra-feminine high fashions by Chanel ($19,445 ivory lace and tulle gown) and Monique Lhuillier ($9,490 silvery beaded tulle frock). The real showstopper is a glamorous peach and burgundy strapless tulle ball gown by Carolina Herrera ($6,990).
In the article, the actress discusses Hollywood and the range of roles she has tackled. Pike also makes one thing clear -- the key to success is being able to stand firmly on your own. "If you ever need a man to rescue you," Pike says, "you make damn sure you never have to be rescued again. You can take care of yourself." The actress was engaged to her Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright, but it was called off last minute before the wedding in 2008.

Designer Stella McCartney unveiled her Spring/Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection today in Paris. Among the fans cheering her on were her dad, Paul McCartney, and his fiancee, Nancy Shevell.
"I loved the show. It's very beautiful," McCartney told Reuters backstage, where he was seen sneaking in a kiss with Shevell. She gave the breezy, playful collection a "double-thumbs up."
The former Beatle is due to wed for the third time and hinted his daughter may have something to do with the suit he'll be wearing. "Well, she makes 'em," he said with a grin, but didn't spill any more details.
Salma Hayek, Anna Wintour and Twiggy were also spotted in front row seats.
