How Cynthia Lennon’s doomed marriage to John Lennon inspired ‘Hey Jude’

WASHINGTON POST

The eighth-greatest song of all time, as Rolling Stone declared it, begins quietly, just with the voice of Paul McCartney and a piano. After the first verse, the song builds — guitars, back-up vocals, Ringo Starr’s drums, percussion. Then there’s the epic outro: A chorus chanting “Na, na, na/Hey Jude” something like 18 times accompanied by a 36-piece orchestra. The song is more than seven minutes long, but it doesn’t feel like it.

“Hey Jude,” even for the first-time listener, is unforgettable. This rock ‘n’ roll gem, its composer says, was inspired by the divorce of John and Cynthia Lennon, who died on Wednesday at 75.

“Jude,” it turns out, is Julian Lennon — John and Cynthia’s son, who was about five when his parents divorced in 1968. McCartney came up with idea when making a conciliatory drive out to see Cynthia, who was cast out of the Beatles’ inner circle after John met Yoko Ono, his future wife.

“I started with the idea ‘Hey Jules,’ which was Julian, don’t make it bad, take a sad song and make it better,” McCartney said, as Howard Sounes wrote in “Fab: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney” in 2011. “Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing. I knew it was not going to be easy for him. I always feel sorry for kids in divorces … I had the idea [for the song] by the time I got there. I changed it to ‘Jude’ because I thought that sounded a bit better.”

As McCartney explained, he intended to take out the song’s most mysterious line — “the movement you need is on your shoulder” — but John wouldn’t have it.

“I was playing the song to John, and I said … ‘I’ll be taking that out,’” McCartney said. “He said, ‘What for? … that’s the best line in it, man.’”

McCartney said he’s come to appreciate the lyric. It emerged as a sort of pep talk for Julian, meaning, “You have the wherewithal to be what you want to be,” McCartney said.

The Lennons got married when Cynthia got pregnant with Julian in 1962. John, who played a show on his wedding night, wasn’t all that enthused.

“I said yes, we’ll have to get married,” John later said. “I didn’t fight it.”

Then the marriage a Beatle didn’t want became the marriage the Beatles didn’t want. A teen idol with a wife and son wouldn’t go over well with the kids, and what Cynthia later deemed her “undercover existence” was kept hush-hush.

“I have read so many books and seen so many films, and it’s like we don’t really exist,” Cynthia Lennon told “Good Morning America” in 2005. “We are like walk-on parts in his life. We did spend 10 years together.”

Though John wrote “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” about a picture Julian drew, he wasn’t exactly a doting father.

“I’ve never really wanted to know the truth about how Dad was with me,” Julian Lennon said. “There was some very negative stuff talked about me … like when he said I’d come out of a whiskey bottle on a Saturday night. Stuff like that. You think, where’s the love in that? Paul and I used to hang about quite a bit … more than Dad and I did. We had a great friendship going, and there seems to be far more pictures of me and Paul playing together at that age than there are pictures of me and my dad.”

All The Photos Of Paul McCartney Performing At Bonnaroo You Could Ever Want WRITTEN BY JOSH KURP (UPROXX)

Bonnaroo 2013: Day 2: Music

"We're about to see a goddamned Beatle." You couldn't walk five feet without hearing at least one person utter that glowing refrain during night two of Bonnaroo around the What Stage (not that you could walk five feet; by nightfall, the 16-acre Manchester, Tennessee, farm was packed to the silo with 70,000 people). Paul McCartney was about to take the stage, and yes, he was a goddamned Beatle, as well as a goddamn Wing and goddamn one of the greatest rock 'n' roll songwriters of all-time. The man wrote "I've Just Seen a Face," for goddamn sake.

And then we saw him, Mecca, looking a bit looser than in his Beatle days, but still youthful, forever The Cute One. For two and a half hours, he played classic after classic, everything from pumped versions of "Eight Days of Week," "Helter Skelter," and "All My Loving" to pyrotechnic power ballad "Live and Let Die" to loving tributes to George and John with "Something" and "Here Today" to the delicate "Yesterday" and "Blackbird," where part of the stage he stood on rose 30 feet in the air, giving the people a half-mile away a sight line to him and his acoustic guitar.

THE BEATLES, ‘FROM ME TO YOU’ – LYRICS UNCOVERED by Bryan Wawzenek May 2, 2013 9:30 AM (CLASSIC ROCK)

In Feb. 1963, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were sitting in the back of a tour bus, seeing if they could rise to the occasion. With ‘Please Please Me’ riding high on the British charts, producer George Martin had issued the Beatles’ budding songwriters a challenge: bring a new composition of equal quality to their next studio session.

Lennon and McCartney had penned ‘Thank You Girl’ at this point, but weren’t opposed to seeing if they could come up with something stronger. On Feb. 28, inspiration struck on the way to Shewsbury.

“The night Paul and I wrote ‘From Me to You,’ we were on the Helen Shapiro tour, on the coach, travelling from York to Shrewsbury,” Lennon remembered in ‘Anthology.’ “We weren’t taking ourselves seriously – just fooling around on the guitar – when we began to get a good melody line, and we really started to work at it. Before that journey was over, we’d completed the lyric, everything. I think the first line was mine and we took it from there.

“What puzzled us was why we’d thought of a name like ‘From Me to You.’ It had me thinking when I picked up the ‘NME’ to see how we were doing in the charts. Then I realized – we’d got the inspiration from reading a copy on the coach. Paul and I had been talking about one of the letters in the From You to Us column.”

Although Lennon and McCartney thought they had something worthwhile, not everyone on the bus agreed. Singer Kenny Lynch (also on the Helen Shapiro tour) tried to assist the boys with their writing, but gave up on them after hearing them put in a falsetto “Whoo!” “You can’t do that! You’ll sound like f—ing fairies,” he shouted. Of course, those high-pitched “whoos” would become an early trademark that the Fab Four employed again when composing their next hit single, ‘She Loves You.’

Paul McCartney still tops the richest musician in Britain list (caribbean360.com)

LONDON, England, Friday April 19, 2013 – At the ripe old age of 70, former Beatles and Wings star Sir Paul McCartney is still the richest musician in Britain, booting “Cats” creator Andrew Lloyd-Webber into the doghouse; giving U2 a big “you, too” and conveying a clear message to Elton John to “Get Back, Honky Cat,” not to mention leaving Mick Jagger with no “Satisfaction”.

McCartney's £680 million (US$1.04 billion) fortune put him in the top spot on the Sunday Times Rich List 2013, which will be published in full on April 21, and ranks the UK and Ireland's richest musicians.

The ranking is nothing new for the vintage entertainer who has topped all the charts for the country's wealthiest musicians since the Rich List’s inception in 1989. At that time he was only worth a paltry £80 million.

Apart from his featured appearances at Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee and both the opening and closing ceremonies for the London Olympics, the former Beatle's "On the Run" tour grossed US$57 million last year.

Plumping-up his total was his millionairess third wife Nancy Shevell's stake in her father's New England Motor Freight empire.

Paul McCartney: The first woman to break Paul McCartney's heart: The Beatle reveals his dearest wish would be to see his mother again

By RAY CONNOLLY
PUBLISHED: 20:16 EST, 27 February 2013 | UPDATED: 02:42 EST, 28 February 2013

Paul McCartney penned Let It Be and Yesterday in tribute to his mother

We have all said things that we’ve immediately and eternally regretted.

For Paul McCartney it’s a thoughtless, inexplicable quip made when he was 14 and had just been told his mother had died.

‘What will we do without her money?’ the teenage Paul blurted, not knowing how to handle his shock and grief.

Then he went to bed and cried all night, clasping his hands in prayer, promising God he would be good if only his mother could come back.

So, it comes as little surprise to learn this week that McCartney, now 70, has told a Brazilian fan that if he had a time machine he would like to ‘go back and spend time with my mum’.

To lose a mother at any age inevitably leaves a well of regret. To lose her at 14 can be devastating, and it’s quite possible the death of Mary McCartney in 1956 from an embolism after an operation for breast cancer, affected Paul’s life for ever.

His brother Michael, who was then aged 12, would later say how, just after their mother’s death, Paul’s growing interest in the guitar turned into an obsession.

Eight months later, in the summer of 1957, Paul was to meet John Lennon, who was also soon to lose his mother in a road accident. Paul believes their shared sense of loss helped bond them, cementing their early friendship.

Decades ago, when I was at a Beatles recording session at London’s Abbey Road, Paul took me into an empty studio, sat at a piano and played me a song he was writing.

It sounded to me like a hymn and, though at that point, he didn’t have many lyrics, one phrase he repeatedly sang that night stayed in my head for more than a year until the record was released. It was: ‘Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom . . .’
