“The Secret Scripture” had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival. Now, the film adaptation of Sebastian Barry’s 2008 bestselling novel of the same name is ready for its big screen release this May. The film comes from beloved Irish director Jim Sheridan, who has six Oscar nominations to his name, for films like “My Left Foot” (1989), “In The Name Of The Father” (1993) and “In America” (2002). 

The film follows the story of Roseanne McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave), an elderly woman who has spent 50 years in a mental institution in Ireland. The film takes viewers into Roseanne’s past. As a young woman (played by Rooney Mara), Roseanne was involved in a love triangle between a fighter pilot (Jack Reynor) and a priest (Theo James) that had devastating consequences for all three of them.

Tom Hiddleston wants to work with Daniel Day-Lewis

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2013, where he picked up the Times Breakthrough Award, Tom said: ''I'd love to have a chance, even a chance, of trying to work with Daniel Day-Lewis because I admire him so much. I am so intrigued. He's always inspired me.

''Just the commitment he takes on every time he chooses to work and kind of what he chooses. You can always see this. He gives 110%.''

The 31-year-old actor - whose CV includes 'War Horse' and 'The Hollow Crown' - once had the chance to meet his idol and ruined the moment by ''gushing'' about how much he loved his work.

He reminisced: ''I met him once, a couple of years ago. It was long before I'd made a film and I was working in theatre and I happened to be somebody's plus one [to an event]. I stopped him on the stairs as I had to tell him he's one of the greatest things; being an actor.

''He said, in his beautiful English/Irish [accent], 'Thank you so much, it means a lot, thank you so much'. It was basically me gushing about how much I loved 'In the Name of the Father' and 'The Last of the Mohicans'.''

Emma Thompson Back As Gareth Peirce? Andre Soares | Apr 4, 2012 | (ALT FILM GUIDE)

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson may once again play human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, according to Screen Daily.

Nearly twenty years ago, Thompson played Peirce in Jim Sheridan's Academy Award-nominated In the Name of the Father (1993, right), in which she defended Daniel Day-Lewis and several others accused of being IRA terrorists. For her efforts — the accused are eventually released — Thompson earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nod.

Despite sharing several elements with Sheridan's movie, this new project is not called In the Name of the Father 2 (or In the Name of the Mother, for that matter). Described as a romantic thriller, The Secret Evidence tells the story of "a young British couple mistakenly caught up in the war on terror who turn to Thompson’s character to get one of them out of prison. However, in fighting for her boyfriend’s freedom, the film’s young female lead finds herself and her family subject to attack from the UK Government’s secret service."

St. Patrick’s Day. A day for Guinness, Corn Beef and an Irish movie (at least in my house). Here’s a collection of wonderful Irish films – and not films about Irish people in America – but the Irish in Ireland. The main themes that seem to run through them are drinking, music and the tragedy of an occupied, divided land. The first two themes are the fun ones – the latter the tragic tales. All are well worth a looksee.


The Guard 
Brendan Gleason commands the screen in the riotously funny film. He plays seemingly dense Irish policeman who works with CIA agent Don Cheadle to bust a drug smuggling ring.





Quiet Man (1952) 
The Duke tames a red-headed l and beats the heck out of Victor McLaglen. This John Ford epic shows an Ireland that exists only in the minds of Americans of Irish descent. And it’s wonderful.
