Capsule reviews of new releases

Capsule reviews of new releases.

By: The Associated Press, Superior Telegram

In this film image released by Warner Bros. Pictures, Katherine Heigl, left, and Jon Bon Jovi are shown in a scene from "New Year's Eve." (AP Photo/Warner Bros. Pictures, Andrew Schwartz

"New Year's Eve" — This is the second in a remarkably shallow series of holiday-themed, celebrity-stuffed confections, following "Valentine's Day." Garry Marshall again directs a script by Katherine Fugate that weaves together a dozen or so plotlines that crisscross a holiday prone to sentimentalizing. If there is some kind of world record for schmaltz, this may have set it. Included here are first kisses, midnight rendezvous, dying fathers, newborn babies, husbands at war and trapped strangers. It's narcotic mawkishness, with notes played on heartstrings like a 12-string guitar. Though it's pure, rosy fantasy on screen, this is cynical, paint-by-the-numbers entertainment, sold with a gaggle of stars spread across its movie poster like a telethon lineup. Among them: Hilary Swank as a producer of the Times Square ball drop, Jon Bon Jovi as a rock star, Katherine Heigl as a catering chef, Abigail Breslin as Sarah Jessica Parker's rebelling teenage daughter, Zac Efron as an ultra-confident courier, Jessica Biel as Seth Meyers' pregnant wife and Halle Berry as the nurse of a dying Robert De Niro. Maybe the really good stuff will come once they get to "Columbus Day," or maybe, just maybe, "Ash Wednesday." PG-13 for language, including some sexual references. 117 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" — Gary Oldman is in a tough spot here. As the ironically named George Smiley, he's an inherently reticent, veteran operative, given to revealing nothing personally or professionally. And yet, as the central figure in this adaptation of John le Carre's best-selling 1974 Cold War novel, he must serve as our conduit, our guide through a shadowy and increasingly dangerous world where no one is to be trusted and nothing is as it initially seems. Because he's Gary Oldman and he's such a chameleon, he finds a slyness beneath the stoic veneer, a frightening intelligence that makes him a surprisingly formidable force. Oldman leads an excellent cast, a veritable who's-who of top British actors working today, all of whom keep us guessing as to who the traitor might be among them. Tomas Alfredson, perhaps best known for directing the superb Swedish vampire thriller "Let the Right One In," has crafted a precisely detailed, well-acted mystery. But he's created a chilly mood that may be a bit too cold, a tension that may almost be too restrained. Smiley, who's been forced into retirement by Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, is rehired to uncover a mole among its ranks. Toby Jones, Colin Firth, Ciaran Hinds and David Dencik are the suspects. R for violence, some sexuality/nudity and language. 127 minutes. Three stars out of four.

"Young Adult" — Gorgeous but damaged, conceited yet self-loathing, Charlize Theron dares you to like her, and the movie itself dares you to stick with an anti-heroine who makes no apologies for her deplorable behavior. It's an exciting thing to see, this willful rejection of tidy character arcs and happy endings, and it actually makes you wish "Young Adult" had been even further fleshed out and gone on a little longer. This is not something we say about a movie very often. In re-teaming with "Juno" director Jason Reitman, screenwriter Diablo Cody dials down the snark that marked the Oscar-winning script that made her a superstar in her own right. She's actually created the anti-Juno in a lot of ways while managing to retain much of the directness, the sharply drawn characters and the casual poignancy that are her signatures. Theron's teen-lit writer Mavis Gary is as verbal as Juno MacGuff was, but rather than finding the perfect, clever quip at all times, she usually manages to say the rudest, most inappropriate thing. This trait is on vivid, horrific display when she returns to her Minnesota small town to pry her high-school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson) away from his wife (Elizabeth Reaser) and newborn daughter. Patton Oswalt is excellent as Mavis' nerdy former classmate and the film's voice of reason. R for language and some sexual content. 94 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell Bring Their All-Star Wedding Party to NYC

E on-line

Nancy Shevell, Paul McCartney James Devaney/WireImage

They did. Now they party.

Just two weeks after Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell made it official and swapped vows in London, the couple did their best to put the par-tay back in their wedding party, throwing a second celebration in New York Friday night for all their Yank friends who couldn't make it across the pond for their original ceremony.

And it would appear that most of those friends were of the bold-named variety. Starting with his most famous former frenemy...

MORE: What made the Beatles reunite this month?
Yoko Ono! What's past is past, as they proved when they walked the red carpet together earlier this month. John Lennon's widow was among those pals who came out to the Bowery Hotel to help celebrate the nuptials of the loved-up former Beatle and his new (previously) NYC-based missus.
She was joined by quite an eclectic guest list that was a far cry from the intimate gathering just a few weeks back: her son Sean Lennon, fellow rockers Joe Walsh and Keith Richards, the latter of whom was joined by wife Patti Hansen, Ralph Lauren and wife Ricky, David Lauren and Lauren Lauren Bush, Aida Turturro, Jon Bon Jovi, head Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Steve Buscemi and James Taylor.

Also along for the celebration, naturally, was Shevell's second cousin Barbara Walters, who was also present for couple's wedding in London (and who will no doubt take advantage of her RSVP by informing her loyal View watchers of all the goings-on this morning).
The revelers reportedly gathered in one of the hotel's private rooms, where they dined on strictly vegetarian cuisine, of course, and, by most accounts, an unceasing flow of champagne.
McCartney and Shevell themselves, at 69 and 51 years young, respectively, left the party at 1:30 a.m., where they were greeted by a crowd of well-wishers. Congrats

Quick quips: Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Slash, Lulu, SuperHeavy, Johnny Gill, Peter Gabriel

added: 20 Oct 2011 // by: VVN Music

Jon Bon Jovi wants more people to volunteer in some of the poorer areas of Red Bank, NJ, so he has opened a new "pay-what-you-can" restaurant. The JBJ Soul Kitchen will give people the choice of earning food by volunteering in the community or by making a suggested donation.
Bon Jovi told New York magazine that this isn't your standard soup kitchen. "Picture the coolest brasserie in your hometown, that's what this is. It's the hottest-looking restaurant in this town. We have to get rid of a few stigmas attached to the word volunteering and making a difference."

A handwritten letter from 1960 written by Paul McCartney to an unknown drummer to offer an audition for the Beatles is going up for auction at Christie's on November 15. The estimate for the item is $14,000.

The letter, dated August 12, 1960, was inside a book picked up at a sale in Liverpool. The letter reads:

We would like to offer you an audition for the position of drummer in the group. You will, however, need to be free soon for a trip to Hamburg (expenses paid £18 per week (approx) for 2 months). If interested ring Jacaranda club and ask for a member of The Beatles.

Meanwhile, one of John Lennon's teeth is also going on the block, this one on November 5, and is expected to bring in even more than the letter, $16,000. Lennon had given the tooth to his housekeeper, Dot Jarrett, as a souvenir.

Slash has finished the initial recording session for his next album which is scheduled for an April 2012 release. According to the guitarist, "This one's definitely a very focused. very hard. Some of it's very heavy. It's got sort of a more unified sound to it, especially with one vocal all throughout."

Lulu was given Scala's Women of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award on Monday at ceremonies in London. The singer said in accepting the award "When I attended the Women of the Year Lunch last year, I was so moved by the amazing women I met and the inspiring work they do in their communities, nationwide and indeed worldwide.

"To be invited back as a winner is beyond my wildest expectations and I'm humbled and thrilled. When women roll up their sleeves, there is no end to what we can achieve."

The supergroup SuperHeavy with Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, Damien Marley and A.R. Rahman has found generally good success in Europe, topping the charts in a couple of country, but it has found far fewer fans in the U.S. To date, the album has only sold 33,000 copies and seems destined to be a footnote in history which is unfortunate because it really is an excellent album.

Two veteran artists will debut in Billboard's top 50 this week. Based on Hits Daily Double's projections, Johnny Gill's Still Winning will move around 16,000 copies, good for the high twenties while Peter Gabriel's New Blood sold around 10,200 and will come in somewhere in the 30's.
