Michael Fassbender’s “Macbeth” movie dubbed a triumph at Cannes

Michael Fassbender joined the stars at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his latest, Macbeth, which he admits he didn’t even see prior to Saturday.

“I’m going to be seeing it with everyone else at the premiere … I can tell you that Marion [Cotillard] as Lady Macbeth is incredible. I know that from being across from her during the scenes. She’s mesmerizing,” Fass told Entertainment Weekly.

The critics absolutely agreed. The film got some stellar reviews, including this rave from the U.K.’s Telegraph: “After seeing Fassbender and Cotillard in these roles, the thought of ever seeing anyone else play them fades into irrelevance.”

There couldn't be a more salivating prospect than Michael Fassbender as Shakespeare's aspirant Macbeth and Marion Cotillard as his manipulative Lady.

And a first look at the posters for the 2015 movie version of the cursed Scottish play - directed by Justin Kurzel - does nothing to quell the appetite

'It’s the first time I’ve played a character with no light, total darkness,' Marion Cotillard told Variety recently of playing Lady Macbeth.

'And when she loses control … I’m affected by the character I live with when I’m shooting, so I lost control of everything, like her, and it was really hard to handle.'

She also told The Independent: 'The depth of humanity in her – but it’s all driven away by fear and despair. How you do things to have a better life – but when they are against humanity, you will fail.'

And she has faith in her co-star: 'I saw a lot of movies [Fassbender] was in, and I have the feeling he’s reached another level here.

'When you start a scene and you don’t really know where you’re going to go, that’s a roller-coaster. Many times I was surprised by what he does in this movie, and this is priceless.'

For any students out there who will face the task of reading Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in the future, cheating by watch the movie version just got a whole lot more interesting. Not that we condone not reading one of literature's greatest works, but if you do decide to take a shortcut, Justin Kurzel's cinematic take may be the one to track down.

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard lead the way in this highly anticipated film, and the actress is already finding human tragedy and flaws in Lady Macbeth. “The depth of humanity in her – but it’s all driven away by fear and  despair. How you do things to have a better  life – but when they are against humanity, you will fail,” she told The Independent earlier this year.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we're not sure that's how Donatella Versace will see this one.

The designer is said to have inspired the look sported by Kristin Scott Thomas in her role as "merciless and terrifying mafia godmother" Crystal Thompson in Only God Forgives .

The character has been described by the film's director Nicolas Winding Refn (the man behind the Gosling-fest that is Drive ) as "a cross between Lady Macbeth and Donatella Versace". Having seen Scott Thomas in character, we think it's safe to say Donatella inspired Crystal's look as opposed to murderous tendencies.

But when questioned about her use of Donatella as a point of reference, Scott Thomas has tried to backtrack.

"This is a huge mistake. Donatella Versace, I've heard she's the sweetest, nicest, kindest person in the entire world," the actress told The Cut , before taking out a shovel and beginning to dig.

"But what she's done is created this aesthetic that many, many, many women emulate. And you know, it was a pretty powerful thing to do, and her idea of glamour and beauty doesn't always work, and it certainly doesn't work on Crystal."

Macbeth: Anne-Marie Duff to make her Broadway debut (NEW YORK THEATRE GUIDE)

Lincoln Center Theater has announced that the Bafta and Olivier Award nominated British actress Anne-Marie Duff will make her New York stage debut as 'Lady Macbeth,' starring opposite Ethan Hawke, in its upcoming production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Jack O’Brien.

The production will open at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on 21 Nov 2013, following previews from 24 Oct 2013, and playing through to 12 Jan 2014.

Additional casting for Macbeth will be announced at a later date.

When three witches tell Macbeth that he is destined to occupy the throne of Scotland, he and his wife choose to become the instruments of their fate and to kill the first man standing in their path, the virtuous King Duncan. But to maintain his position, Macbeth must keep on killing – first Banquo, his old comrade-in-arms; then, as the atmosphere of guilt and paranoia thickens, anyone who seems to threaten his tyrant’s crown.

Kenneth Branagh's Macbeth at MIF gets two extra performances (MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS) By Deanna Delamotta

The special preview shows will be available exclusively to Greater Manchester residents and will go on sale at 1pm tomorrow

It was the hottest ticket in town – selling out in minutes to the disappointment of thousands of theatre fans.

But now Greater Manchester people who missed out on the chance to see Macbeth starring Sir Kenneth Branagh have been given a second chance to see the landmark show.

The hotly-anticipated highlight of this year’s Manchester International Festival signals a return to Shakespeare after more than a decade for thespian and film director Sir Kenneth – and it will be the first time he has played the Scottish king.

Add to this the fact that the performances will take place in an as yet unnamed deconsecrated central Manchester church and the buzz surrounding this production on the global arts stage is reaching fever pitch.

Festival organisers have now decided to throw open the church doors to Greater Manchester residents with two extra performances of the play, which also stars former ER actress Alex Kingston as Lady Macbeth.
