Sustainable fashion was in vogue at the 84th Academy Awards on Feb. 26 due to awareness raised by two campaigns dedicated to the cause: the Green Carpet Challenge (GCC) and the Red Carpet Green Dress contest.

For the Green Carpet Challenge, founder Livia Firth, Colin Firth’s eco-conscious and fashionable wife, has enlisted top stylists like Tom Ford, Gucci, Chanel, Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Valentino, Roger Vivier, Alberta Ferretti, and Ermenegildo Zegna to design clothing conforming to GCC standards for her own red carpet appearances since 2009.

And now her enthusiasm for the project has caught on.

By VICTORIA WELLMAN

First Lady Michelle Obama was recently lauded for recycling a favourite Tracy Reese dress at a dinner in Washington DC and creating her own cycle of style. But who would have thought the paragon of fashion etiquette, Anna Wintour, would follow her example?

Last night at the star-studded United Kingdom State Dinner, Ms Wintour treated a stunning Chanel frock to a second outing after debuting the black and white sheath at the Met Costume Institute Gala in 2009.

Firth's Wife To Dress Green For Awards Season

Oscar winner Colin Firth's eco-warrior wife has given the world's top designers a challenge for the awards season after asking them to create one-off gowns for her using only recycled materials and vintage couture.

Her husband's A Single Man director Tom Ford, and top designers from Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Paul Smith and Valentino have agreed to dress Livia Firth for the red carpet in eco-friendly gowns as part of the 2012 Green Carpet Challenge.

Firth tells Vogue magazine, "Over the last three years, the Green Carpet Challenge has become an all-consuming passion of mine. This part of the fashion landscape is so exciting because it's genuinely revolutionary and relentlessly positive."

The outfits Livia wears on the red carpets at awards shows will be posted online on Vogue's Green Carpet Challenge blog, beginning with her Golden Globes gown on Sunday (15Jan12).

Elizabeth McGovern has a passion for eco-fashion (Mother Nature Network)

Elizabeth McGovern has a passion for eco-fashion

Actress returns as Lady Cora in the second season of 'Downton Abbey.'

When she's not dressed to the nines in posh period costume as Lady Cora, Countess of Grantham, in "Downton Abbey," Elizabeth McGovern likes to wear eco-conscious clothing. Her good friend Livia Firth (wife of actor Colin) turned her on to fashion designers like the French company Kami, which uses only sustainable fabrics. "And they're absolutely stunning to look at," says McGovern, who drives a Prius, "but I try not to drive," taking public transportation instead.

The London-based American-born actress returns to PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" in "Downton Abbey," premiering Jan. 8, as the American wife of the lord of the titular manor — a role for which she earned both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. "She's a character that becomes more and more fascinating to me as the story goes on. I love her quiet strength. It's not an in-your-face, 'I'll do it my way' thing, but it's done her way. I think that's fascinating. I think she works the system to her advantage and works it well, but does it with dignity and grace and is quiet about it. I like all that about her," says McGovern.

The second series begins in 1916 with England at war and various secrets and entanglements continuing upstairs within the family and downstairs among the help, or both, as the romance between Lady Sybil and Branson the chauffeur heats up. There will be a flu epidemic, betrayal, weddings and several deaths before the season comes to a close in February with an episode set at Christmas. "You'll see a lot of the stories settle down and find resolution, but the story isn't over," says McGovern, looking forward to a third installment.

She enjoys doing the period drama, and all that comes with it. "It's wonderful to wear the costumes even though it is painful. I love the simplicity of it. I love the lack of excess stimuli that we all have to put up with now. When we're all at the castle shooting it, it actually feels so simple and pure and quiet. It's very peaceful." But playing the aristocratic Cora hasn't rubbed off on her. "I swear like a fishwife and I get on my hands and knees and scrub the floor," she confides.

McGovern, who performs around London as a singer-guitarist in her band, Sadie and the Hotheads, when she's not acting, loves England but says she still feels very American, "more as time goes by. But London suits me. It suits my temperament." She appreciates that she can enjoy her privacy there. "There's not quite the same cult of celebrity that there is here. Actors are more respected and less idolized," she compares. "There's a different attitude that I think is saner."

Moving easily between British and American productions, McGovern next plays an English in "Cheerful Weather for the Wedding," set in the 1930s, and American in "Angels Crest," "about a terrible accident that happens in a small town and the impact it has on the community."

Livia Firth for Yoox

Harpers Bazaar

“I’d love if we could get to the point where fashion was only ever produced in an ethical way,” Livia Firth told us in this month’s issue of Bazaar. She may be the wife of Oscar-winning, thespian god Colin Firth, but Livia Firth has been making a name for herself as an eco-style queen taking the red carpet by storm, and she will be selling one of her design creations exclusively at yoox.com next month.

In collaboration with Reclaimed-To-Wear, an organization that brings together designers, producers and distributors to create capsule collections developed from pre-consumer textile waste and surplus from mills and manufacturers, Livia has designed the perfect eco-party-dress available from late November – just in time for the festive season.

Inspired by Grace Kelly and a vintage 50s polka-dot dress owned by husband Colin’s mother, Livia has showcased the design on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival – a fitting tribute to her Green Carpet Challenge initiative – her personal quest to raise the profile of eco designers in the red carpet.
We may not be stepping out on the red carpet any time soon, but we can’t wait to cut a rug in this fun and flirty guilt-free creation.
