Golden Globes: Cumberbatch, Redmayne, Pike and Jones among Britons recognised

Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are among a host of British stars in contention for the 2015 Golden Globe awards.

Cumberbatch, Redmayne and fellow Briton David Oyelowo make up three of the nominees for best actor in a drama.

Felicity Jones, Redmayne's co-star in Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, is up for best actress in a drama, as is Gone Girl's Rosamund Pike.

The 72nd Golden Globes will be held in Beverly Hills on 11 January.

Cumberbatch's citation comes for his role as World War II code breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, for which Keira Knightley gets a best supporting actress nod.

Bookmakers William Hill make Redmayne their 10/11 favourite to win the best actor in a drama award, with Cumberbatch just behind at 6/4.

Both actors were nominated for Screen Actors Guild awards on Wednesday, as were Jones, Pike and Knightley.

Cumberbatch and Redmayne are expected to receive Oscar nominations next month, as is Michael Keaton for his work in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's darkly comic Birdman.

Because the Golden Globes divides its nominations between dramas and musicals and comedies, Keaton is shortlisted in a different category.

Redmayne said he was "beyond thrilled" and would "have a few mulled wines to celebrate", while Jones, who plays Hawking's first wife Jane in The Theory of Everything, said it was "a tremendous moment to get the news".

Knightley and Pike are among other nominees to have expressed pleasure and thanks at having been recognised.

Eddie Redmayne chats to Stephen Hawking as he gets ready to play the physicist in Theory Of Everything

It was only a matter of time before an actor brought the life of Stephen Hawking played out on the big screen, and now in Theory Of Everything, Eddie Redmayne has that job.

But if playing one of the most brilliant physicists in the world wasn't pressure enough, Eddie, 31, had Stephen watching him film scenes in Cambridge, where Hawking, 71, studied and still resides as the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the university.

But by the looks of things, Eddie's acting skills prevailed as the two were seen laughing together in between takes.

The film, directed by James Marsh, will focus on the point in Stephen's life when he met first wife Jane Wilde. She was a childhood friend of the scientist's younger sister Phillipa, and they embarked on a relationship shortly before he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, at the age of 21.

Felicity Jones of Chalet Girl and Like Crazy fame will play Jane, who married Stephen and had three children with between, even though at the time of his diagnosis, doctors only gave him two years to live.

In her book Music to Move the Stars: A Life With Stephen, Jane talks about the warning she received against her getting romantically involved with Hawking.

'I replied that I would prefer not to know the details of the prognosis,' she writes, 'because I loved Stephen so much that nothing could deter me from wanting to marry him.

EXCLUSIVE: Felicity Jones is set to star opposite Eddie Redmayne in Theory Of Everything for Working Title. I’m hearing that Universal Pictures has signed on for the project in which Redmayne plays physicist Stephen Hawking. The film is to be directed by James Marsh, who won the  Best Documentary Oscar for Man On Wire. Jones will play his wife, Jane. When they meet at Cambridge, he is able-bodied and she is an art student. They fall in love and even though he is given a death sentence with an ALS diagnosis that means two years to live, she makes the choice to marry him. The film focuses on the highs and lows of their life as he becomes more famous than most able-bodied men. At the same time, his confinement to a chair with a crippling disability has a profound impact on her. Anthony McCarten wrote the script. Lisa Bruce is producing with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

Thoroughly Modern Lizzie: Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern goes for futuristic look at Cheerful Weather For A Wedding premiere (MAIL ON LINE)

We're used to seeing her in period clothing as the Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey.

But on Wednesday night, the American actress decided to go for a very different look in a futuristic ensemble.

The singer/actress, 51, opted for an unusual leather-look zip-up silver paneled dress as she attended the gala screening of her new movie Cheerful Weather For A Wedding.


The TV star joined her co-stars Felicity Jones and Zoe Tapper at the screening for the period romance, which is released on DVD on Monday.

Rising star Felicity, 29, looked pretty in a pastel dress, while co-star Zoe wore a black dress.

The film stars McGovern as the mother of bride-to-be (Felicity), who is in turmoil when her ex-boyfriend turns up on her wedding day.

For years Chris Pine sat alone as the only cast member attached to the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot. While the actor has been attached to the project since October 2009, it has undergone so many delays that it has never been able to pick up any other stars. That is finally starting to change, however. Last month it was revealed that not only will Kenneth Branagh be directing the movie, but he will be playing the central villain as well, and now there are reports that the search for the film's female lead has been narrowed down to three actresses.

Deadline says that Keira Knightley, Felicity Jones and Evangeline Lilly are all being considered to play a lead in the upcoming action film. Of the group, Knightley is considered the frontrunner, though the other two are very much in the mix.

Elizabeth McGovern looks a world away from uptight Downton in youthful photoshoot at TriBeCa Film Festival By EMILY SHERIDAN (MAIL ON LINE)

In the upcoming third series of Downton Abbey, Cora, Countess of Grantham will be a 62-year-old. But in real-life, actress Elizabeth McGovern is a lot more youthful 50 years old. After wrapping filming on the third series of the ITV period drama, McGovern has been promoting her latest film at the TriBeCa Film Festival in New York.

McGovern is currently promoting Cheerful Weather For A Wedding, in which she plays the mother of a bride-to-be (Felicity Jones), who is in turmoil when her ex-boyfriend turns up on her wedding day. She attended the film's world premiere on Friday night and moved on to the after-party at ROC restaurant.

McGovern filmed the third series of Downton Abbey in Hampshire in February and March. Joining the cast was Shirley Maclaine, who plays Cora's American mother Martha Levinson. Writing on Twitter last month, McGovern said: 'It's been so much fun with Shirley in the castle!

The Orange Rising Star is not a traditional BAFTA award, but rather an audience prize that's handed out on BAFTA night. It's designed to engage the public in the ceremony, particularly the younger movie fans targeted by cellphone giant Orange, the title sponsor of the awards.

The longlist of eight contenders is drawn up by a jury of industry experts, but the five nominees and the winner are decided by public vote. However smart the longlist selections, the candidate with the year's biggest box office has an inherent advantage.

By that yardstick, this year's longlist is unusually hard to read.

It includes several actors who have appeared in blockbusters, several with multiple credits, several whose big films will be released just as the voting is taking place and one wild card in the form of Adam Deacon, a cult hero among the teen cellphone addicts who decide this award.

As always some of your favorite British stars are heavily in-demand. We have all the latest rumors that are circling, and can tell you who has signed on for what movie with our latest casting catch up.
In this busy week we feature Idris Elba, Sam Riley, Danny Mays, Helen Mirren, Clive Owen, Felicity Jones, Jared Harris, Rufus Sewell, Sacha Baron Cohen and David Oyelowo. See what they are all up to below.
If the rumors are true, in-demand actor and Luther star Idris Elba could be a living legend with his next role. According to flickering myth and their reliable sources Elba is about to sign up to play the former South African President Nelson Mandela in an official biopic about his life that will start filming sometime next year. If true Elba will be following in the footsteps of greats like Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Sydney Poitier (Mandela and De Klerk), Terrence Howard (Winnie) who have all taken on the role before him.
Clive Owen looks set to continue with the action roles, after recently starring in Killer Elite the British actor has now signed up to star in Recall directed by Harold Becker (Mercury Rising). According to Empire it will see Owen taking the role as NSA agent who has lost his memory and is attempting to figure out what happened during a failed plan to rescue some prisoners. As his memory of the events slowly begins to return, he discovers there’s no one he can trust. You can next see Owen in Intruders out in the US April 2012.
Zen star Rufus Sewell has joined Bradley Cooper in Paradise Lost, an action-heavy take on the epic poem centered on the war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer. Directed by Alex Proyas (Knowing) Sewell will play Samael, Lucifer’s agent who tells him to begin the rebellion in heaven. As well as Cooper, Sewell will star alongside Benjamin Walker, Casey Affleck and Djimon Hounsou in the movie due out late next year.
Hot off the press is the latest rumor about Helen Mirren. THR is reporting that the ageless British actress will be joining fellow Brit Anthony Hopkins in Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, a project based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie. Filming is expected to start sometime next year.
Felicty Jones has not been short of work this year, (Chalet Girl, Like Crazy, Hysteria) and now she is taking even more on. According to the Daily Mail, the upcoming British actress has been chosen by Ralph Fiennes to portray Charles Dickens’s mistress, Nelly Ternan, in a film about their secret affair. The Dickens movie is called The Invisible Woman and is based on Claire Tomalin’s detailed examination of the relationship between the author and Nelly, which lasted 13 years until the day of his death.
Two bits of casting news in one here! As Neil Jordan’s vampire fantasy thriller Byzantium, that has just started filming in Ireland, has added both Sam Riley (Brighton Rock) and Daniel Mays (Dcotor Who) to its cast. Cinema Blend reports that Riley will play Darvell, a man allegedly caught in the middle of a deadly pact formed between a mother-daughter vampire pair, Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan.
Another movie that keeps adding Brits to its cast is Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, a biopic about the former US president that will feature Daniel Day-Lewis. In recent weeks the film has added former Spooks star David Oyelowo as a cavalryman and Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) will play Ulysses S. Grant, a Union general in the Civil War who later became the 18th President of the United States. Lincoln will be in theaters in 2012.
According to reports Sacha Baron Cohen is in talks and very close to land a role in King’s Speech director Tom Hooper’s latest film “Les Miserables”. The actor best known for his comedy roles in Borat and Bruno looks set to tackle the role of the main villain in the big screen adaptation of the famous play. Baron Cohen is expected to star as Monsieur Thenardier, who is described as the father of Eponine and Azelma. Along with his wife, he spoils and pampers them as children, before they leave them on the streets.
